JENA 6 UPDATE: MYCHAL BELL ORDERED BACK TO JUVE / MOTHER INTERVIEWED IN ESSENCE
Friday, October 12, 2007

JENA, La. A teenager at the center of a civil rights controversy is back in jail after a judge revoked his probation and sentenced him on charges that were pending before the attack that put him in the national spotlight, his attorney said Thursday.
Mychal Bell, who along with five other black teenagers had been accused of beating a white classmate, went to juvenile court Thursday expecting another routine hearing, said Carol Powell Lexing, one of Bell’s attorneys.
Instead, after a six-hour hearing, state District Judge J.P. Mauffrey Jr. sentenced him to 18 months on two counts of simple battery and two counts of criminal destruction of property, Lexing said.
He had been on probation for those charges during the Dec. 4 attack on classmate Justin Barker. [SOURCE]
Melissa Bell (Mychal’s Mother) interviewed by essence
Make sure you check out the exclusive interview Essence Magazine had with Mychal’s mother Melissa Bell recently concerning her son and his case.
Essence.com: For months you had been fighting for your sons freedom without success. What was your reaction when you learned that he would finally be released?
Melissa Bell: I didnt want to get too excited until I saw that he was out. When we actually signed the papers to let him out thats when I really got excited. Were not fully celebrating because we still have a long way to go, but we were happy to go in there, put some clothes on him and walk him out.
Essence.com: How is Mychal doing?
M.B.: Hes doing well. They have him under house arrest and he cant go any farther than home, but all his friends have been visiting him. His first night home he watched TV all night with his friends and slept in the living room. Hes nervous, of course, because he has his juvenile court date on October 11, but hes trying to enjoy his friends and not think about it. Thats what I told him, Dont think about it right now; let the lawyers do the thinking.
ssence.com: How has this experience changed you?
M.B.: It opened my eyes to see that you cant trust everybody because everybodys not your friend. Things can happen to you in the blink of an eye. Your life can change in one day. It made me think about life more and getting my kids together and getting them right with God. Were with God, but getting them straighter with God. And I realize that your kids can be taken from you with a stroke of a pen. [READ MORE]

well, I see they are going to try to get him one way or another. At least he is at a juvenile facility and will get out in little under two years. I still think its a little unfair though. He shouldn’t have to serve over a year for those petty crimes. destruction of property, come on…that is a fine at best

WTF.He should not be serving 18 months in Juvenile Detention. Hell a F’ing Child molster and rapist spend less time in jail. He has already served about.. what 8 months in in an adult jail already. They should have subtracted that from the 18 months or just not have sentenced him at all. WOW this truly is a white priveleged society.

A 6 on 1 fight is unfair and they all need a punishment that fits the crime. What’s happening to Bell is so unjust it’s hard to believe. Where is the Governor,House and Senate? Are they all sitting on there butt wait for Al Sharpton to do something? Why are we electing these officials if they don’t represent US when we need them.

@ 12….you hit the nail on the head. You play, you pay and the sooner our youth realizes that the better off they will be. We have to learn to think before we act and don’t forget the color of our skin. THEY may be able to get away with one thing, and we just can’t. Get slicker or just stop doing dirt. Your choice. Number 12 hit the nail on the head: Had he not committed a previous crime, there would be no probation clause to get him on. I get sick of all this poor black brother business, when that “poor black brother” always ends up having a long past that includes multiple crimes. Why are we always supporting people who don’t support us? Again, WHY DOES THIS COMMUNITY SUPPORT PEOPLE WHO DON’T SUPPORT US? When you’re committing crime, you aren’t supporting this community. Bottomline.
PS: This mother is talking about how he spent the night watching TV - doesn’t he need to be somewhere reading a book and thinking hard about his life and where it’s going?

Poor Kid
The LAST thing he needed to be involved in was a 6 on 1 beat down of another individual.
When your on probation, you can be caught doing anything criminal.

it’s unfortunate, but
Young people get in trouble all the time.
Riding around in stolen cars, smoking weed, shoplifting, etc etc…
It almost like a rite of passage for our young black men to be involved in some time of criminal activity.
So many of our young black youth are hustling, boosting, selling bootleg/swag merchandise.
It would be a good thing to train our youth that a life of crime can get you jammend up when you lest expect it.
Mychal Bell probation has just got revoked.
His freedom was just violated, and he now has to serve 18 months for doing something immature.
It’s difficult, I know, But we have to train our young black youth that they will be judged by the choices that they make

While I supported everything regarding the Jena 6 situation, I understand why he is now locked up. The guy had been in trouble numerous times before the noose situation, and charges were filed on this matter before that as well. Looks to me like he was a bad ass way before we knew about him. If he did what they claim he did, he needs to take responsibility and do the time. Plain and simple. We need to stop making excuses about how the white man is bringing us down and making an example out of us…we are bringing ourselves down. Take responsibility for your own actions.

This is crazy. What was the point of even letting him out of jail. ‘Oh I get it so all those ignorant black people wearing the free jena 6 black t-shirts could shut up thinking that they have a victory on their hands’ That’s how these ppl think. And Are they going to include the 10 months that he’s already spent in an ADULT prison facility along with his charge therefore making it only spending 8 months in a juvenile facility?
What happened to the men driving around with nooses on their trucks? That’s a hate crime and it is also inciting a riot….
Angel can you please post updates on the case of the woman in VA that was beaten and raped for a week by her white friends?
Does anyone have any updates on the Genarlow Wilson case?
What about willie Mayo?

I heard that this is the same judge from the last case presiding over this case. That judge knew letting him out then was ok, and african americans calm down from the injustice, knowing when this teenager go before the juvenile court system because of his age, he was going to put him right back in. I know it was a prior incident that caused him to go on probation and violate, but the real reason behind it is because of Jena.

nobody is saying that we should give him a chance and let him go free for what he did, We are just saying that the penalty DOES NOT fit the crime. Why wasn’t the white boys that jumped one of his friends in a party a couple of nights before taken into custody and made a mockery of like he has been? Yes you are right we need to take responsibility for our actions but don’t you think he has paid enough? The boy has spent almost a YEAR in an adult prison for responding to being harrased and taunted constantly. And excuse me for believing this but maybe just maybe the reason Mychal Bell is even IN prison in the first place is because A not THE White boy and a WHITE community harrassed and taunted him and his 5 friends for JUST BEING BLACK.
Let’s not forget the other 5 that have to be tried about this as well please pray for them as well.

I agree with #12 and #27. Even though the incident with the noose was messed up and everyone involved should be held accountable and punished accordingly, it does not make him look good knowing that he had a criminal past. if you do the crime you have to do the time. these young people now a days have no discipline.I am 33 and I know that when I got into trouble or did something wrong, I was more afraid of the consequnces from my parents rather than the consequences from the police. parents don’t want their kids to be treated like they were, so they let them get away with more. While there is rampant racism and injustice in this country, people still have to be held accountable for their own actions!

18 months is to long for that bull crap. They are building a criminial putting him in jail for 18 mths and they no it. I have no problem w/the fact that he broke his probation and has to be punished. But if Foxy Brown can get 10 chances, why can’t this kid catch 1 last break? Owing to the circumstances, I think he would qualify.
Racial attacks can push anyone over the edge.
Now. What are they going to do with the other kids?

I thought it was common knowledge that when you’re on probation for a previous crime and you get arrested AGAIN for whatever reason that you will have to do that time stipulated in your judgement. Don’t get me wrong I believe they singled out this brother and tried to make him an example. However, that doesn’t excuse the fact that he hasn’t been an angel. He knew that if he got arrested for anything he would go to jail. He should have walked away from the situation instead of joining in. I know that’s easier said than but he now has to suffer the reprocussions of actions.

Like I said before, the Jena 6 situation was uncalled for. While I was ranting about how wrong they were being treated, I read where Bell had been in trouble before. So should what happened BEFORE the Jena 6 situation be wiped away all because of what happened afterwards? Hell no! If that was the case, his ass could get in trouble again and claim that he’s being targeted because he’s black and because of what happened with the beating. Yes he was just a kid, but his ass wasn’t acting like a kid when he decided to commit the crime of simple battery and criminal destruction of property.

18 months? Dag that is a little extreme. Maybe five or six then I would have no compliant but 18 months is almost two years which is uncalled for when you have people like in Virginia who raped and beat the Black lady had rap sheets long as ever for ADULT CRIMES but were still not in jail for that long. And judges are sentencing girls who burnt down their mother house on probation and a boy (white boy) even though race does not matter who killed a mother and her three year old son in a hit and run I believe on probation. The boy was already in an ADULT JAIL for ten months no telling what happened to him in there so this right here is an example of overkill. Yeah the boy deserves to be punished but putting him in jail for almost two years is way overboard and trust me believe what you want to but there is some racist context in this sentencing.

They are making him an example. Sure he did something wrong and should have gotten punished for that incident and that alone. The two are mixed together. I’m not saying give this kid cookies and milk when he’s done something wrong. However, a rapist/molester gets less time than this kid. The issue with our youth is we as parents are not doing enough. The issue with our prisioners is they’re not being rehabilitated.

For those of you saying that this kid is being treated unfair and that the punishment DOES NOT fit the crime, you need to do a little research on this kid/knuckle-head.
He’s doing 18 months for violating his probation (his 5th separate violation). Meaning he had been put on probation 4 separate times for 4 separate crimes and violated each one and never spent a day in jail for the violations. Now he has a 5th violation (for the two counts of simple battery and two counts of criminal destruction of property) and you say 18 months is too long? Give me a f’ing break.
I bet if it was a skinhead who had been put on probation 4 separate times for 4 separate hate crimes and violated each one and never spent a day in jail for the violations you’d be wondering why he was out in the first place.
This kid is not Nelson Mandela and his ass should not be freed!! Damn people!!! WAKE UP!!!

It’s so obvious they planned this, and they wanted to make it very theatrical to make a point…they could have been made the decision to keep him in jail based on the probation violation weeks ago, and they could have simply transported him to juvenile at that point..they are playing a cat and mouse game with him, and trying to make a point to the world…i’m not saying he should get off for the previous charges, of course not, but the manner in which they revoked his bond is wrong…they should have simply transported him to juvenile a few weeks ago, so he could have started serving the time on that already…they knew damn well they were going to revoke his bond…
I sincerely hopes he learns a lesson from all of this.

i agree with #23 and #27. if the kid was trying to do something with his life and just an innocent kid being targeted by white supremacists, then i’d be on his side. however, it looks like he was already going down the wrong path before he got caught up in this jena 6 mess.
i’m one of the few black people in here that don’t feel sorry for him. also, even though that white boy may have been a racist and provoked a beat down, he was clearly outnumbered and there was no way those kids could claim they were defending themselves.
again, i’m not sure how much i can feel sorry for them. i think the only way black men can get by in this country is to try to stay out of trouble. yes, there are innocent black people targeted all the time, but when u bring it on yourself, no one should feel sorry for you.
i feel like black people are defending this kid like they have defended michael vick, r. kelly, o.j. simpson and micheal jackson. its riduculous. sometimes YES, black do fuck up. and we don’t always need to defend them when they do.
it only makes US look bad. defending people who do undefendable things will only dilute the character and moral capital we have as descendents of slaves struggling for our freedom.

This is obivous and plain and simple why they doing this. The one and only reason they are doing this is because number one they are mad because Jena 6 had so much recognition and everyone was on Jena 6 side now this what makes me mad as hell okay why they had him to pay a bail just to get out for a month or two they knew along what they was going to do. They knew all along they was going to have him in Juvenile and they made him pay that expensive bond knowing all along they was going to let him stay out for a month that shit is crazy. And now he got to go to Juvenile for 2 years almost you can say that’s jail right there that’s not right why are they keep picking on him and why they want leave him alone. They are really trying to bully him besides they knew a long they was going to get him for that I mean white crackers got so much to give account for trust and believe me on Judgement day you are going to see more white people in hell than anybody else. Those crackers have a lot to give account for they are dirty and evil. That’s why I it hurt me because there are so many african american children getting into trouble they are soon going to wake up and see that the system is not your friend if he was a white boy he would have got therapy. They just seen how Jena 6 was getting a lot of attention from celebrities and everyone was standing up for him and white people want us to be against each other that’s all and for them to see how we stand up for each other in a time of need they was going to try to get one of them regardless out of the 6 and it don’t make no sense what so ever but the those crackers going to get theirs pay back is a bitch and you better believe it’s all coming up soon just give it time. And to his family I feel so bad I will keep praying for them because I can only imagine what they are going through right now. It’s sad very sad that our color can change us in the system with a pen it’s not fair and it’s not right but I believe in GOD and my GOD sit up high and look down low and he sees everything what goes on and you better believe they can only do wrong for so long it’s all coming back up again a lot of white people will be in that hell line jus watch and see.

To 48,23,27 what in the hell are you talking about don’t be so stupid I can tell you guys are uncle toms who want to be white but you don’t have a pot to piss in and a window to throw it out you can’t tell me he should be in Juvenile. They knew all along what he done why they just didn’t handle the situation then. Instead of making him pay that expensive bail. I mean it’s sad those crackers knew all along mark my word they knew what they was going to do in the first beginning they had that planned the whole time. And another thing they saw how all the brothers and sisters was standing up for their color and they saw how we support each other. That’s what made the crackers mad and that’s why they wanted to see someone go down 1out of the 6 I mean they tried to get him back. I don’t care what nobody says they planned to do that they knew all along what they was going to do to him. And how can they be so harsh and give almost 2 years that’s over the top if he was a white person he would get like a month or two in therepy tell me they wouldn’t give a a white person a month in therapy I know because I my cousin use to hang with white people and he told me that his friend broked into a woman house and he didn’t stay in jail but for one day and they told him maybe him and his family should do some time in family counseling because apparently he is having problems that need to be solved they claimed the boy had a problem with his family and he only stayed in jail for one day and his family and him had to do like 12 months in family couseling so you still telling me white people don’t get better punishments. Who ever standing up for some of these stupid ignorant black people on this board you are just as ignorant as they are so to the numbers I called out stop being so ignorant and get a life because I don’t care what nobody say that’s the one and only reason and I do mean one and only reason why they did what they did and gave him that time in Juvenile.

@ #12 and #17 - you guys seriously believe this kid deserves a total of 28 months - 10 of those served in an adult facility - for what amounted to little more than a school yard fight? Come on! Yes, he had prior run-ins with the law, so what he was on probation, but locking this kid away until he’s 18 is not going to rehabilitate him.
Yes, everyone needs to pay for their crimes, but the punishment should fit the crime. But the hanging of the noose warranted no punishment? The beating of a black kid (one of the Jena 6, Robert Bailey) by a group of white kids warranted no punishment? A white mans pulls a gun, a black person wrestles it away - and the black person gets charged for robbery??? All of the incidents are related to Bell’s case - they were not handled equally or fairly.
I usually don’t attack other people’s opinions, but you two couldn’t be more wrong, I’m sorry.
Please continue to support the Jena 6 - as you can see, this battle is far from over. The Color of Change Organization has a letter writing campaign to get the actions of the DA investigated - it’s 5 minutes of your time and a stamp - http://www.colorofchange....a/walters/?id=1950-364249

I feel sorry for the young brother..
He’s going to spend 18 months in Juve, after already doing 10 months in Adult Jail.
That brother is going to be really angry & confused when he comes out.
Does anyone know if his Father is in his life ?
Does he have a male role model, that he can look up to for guidance, DISCIPLINE and Knowledge ?

@55 - did your son ask why the white people who jumped on Robert Bailey aren’t being punished?
The Jena case isn’t about right and wrong or crime and punishment. It’s about race - white and black. It’s not about punishing those who are wrong, but everyone being treated equally. The black people in the Jena 6 case aren’t being treated equally.

SMH This is a mess. I’m sorry but I have no faith in this country’s legal system. There is a serious double standard and I dont think we shouldn;t make waves when something aint right. That boy is in HIGH SCHOOL! He’s a BABY! He needs to be home with his momma and studying in school not in a jail cell till his 18th birthday. Okay, so he had a past record. 18 months though? Did somebody die? Was someone maimed? shot? stabbed? alright then, It’s BS. All this is doing is taking the focus off whats important. A NOOSE was hung from a tree on school property? Were they waiting until someone was found hanging from it? Lets be for real. We have people coming out the woodworks with their racist bullshyt (a noose on the door of a Black columbia professor, another noose found on the locker of a rookie cop in brooklyn).
This country is regressing and no one is even paying attention. When Jim Crow comes back for that azz I bet we’ll pay attention then. SMFH.

2 counts of simple battery and 2 counts of criminal destruction of property……..those aren’t really SERIOUS crimes. Yes, they are still crimes . Yes, he should be punished and yes, the kid is an IDIOT for violating his probation, but he is still just a KID.
He’s young and dumb and made some really stupid choices. What is another 18 months in jail going to solve? He already spent almost a year in PRISON!
What he needs are some anger management classes, counseling, support from his parents and a new neighborhood outside of Jena Louisiana !

I’m so tired of black people supporting “black criminals” just because they are black. OJ, Michael Vick, Mychel Bell. I’m not saying he was treated fairly, he shouldn’t have been tried as an adult and with such a harsh conviction. This kid deserves to be punished for hitting the white kid upside the back of the head and kicking him the way he did. And deserves to be punished for his probation violations from his 4 prior run-ins with the law.
So the big question is, what is appropriate punishment, whether white or black, what is appropriate punishment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@ # 70 - It’s not even about black people defending him simply because he is black. What we are defending is our right to not be judged by the color of our skin. Cuz guess what, if it happens to Mychal Bell, it can happen to anybody. Blacks often receive more harsh penalties for crimes of “less or equal value” to those crimes committed by non-whites.
10 months of time served in an adult prison facility is more than “just punishment” for Mychal Bell’s probation violation, don’t you think. Especially in light of the the fact that one of the white guys who did pretty much the same thing to Robert Bailey that Mychal Bell and the others did to Justin Barker only got probation and no jail time.
You don’t get damn near two years in jail for violating probation for what adds up to at the most a few misdemeanors. I’ve known of people to violate probation on a felondy drug conviction by selling more drugs, and get no time, just an extension on their probation.
I’ll give to all y’all - Mychal Bell might be a bad ass, and that needs to be dealt with - in my opinion it has been dealt with - if 10 months in an adult correction facility dealing with only God knows what didn’t scare him straight, he’s a lost cause, and he’ll end up dead or in jail anyway. But give him a chance to eff up again - the Louisiana Jim Crow justice system is trying to make a statement on the back of Mychal Bell. How can anyone, black or white, think that’s okay?

M.B.: I feel very good about it. It’s encouraging to know that so many people are standing behind you and still believe in helping each other. Now, being that O.J. was found not Guilty of the Nicole Brown Murder, that was done in court in a fair and lawful way, whether you or I agree.
Mychel Bell is being unfairly prosecuted by racist in the jena Judicial system, because of what happened to the white boy in the fight. It was a school fight. It should have been dealt with by school officials. I’ve seen worse fights when i was in school and they were consequences dealt out by school officials for juveniles, not by racist ass law makers. Jena is a racist town with racist people and Mychel is not being given fair punishments for his crimes PERIOD!!!!

Black folks are just as bad as “Latinos” marching in the streets about “immigrants rights” (law-breaking illegal aliens engaged in mass identity theft to get jobs; destroying the economy; costing tax payers billions of dollars in social welfare benefits while sending a lot of their check of the USA).
This is not about civil rights. The Jena 6 hurt someone. They assaulted someone at a ratio of six to one, including kicks to the head and face.
For a moment, suspend the obsession and focus on race. If it were your son or brother or friend lying on the ground being attacked by six other boys/men and kicked and beat until he passed out; hospitalized with fractured/broken bones in the face. Do you think you’d be so upset if the punishment didn’t fit the crime? If the boys involved were punished “too harshly.” Hell no! \
Face it, you bet on the wrong horse. You marched and protested and screamed racism on behalf of a habitual criminal who was too stupid or too evil to keep out of trouble while his black ass was on probation.
Screw the Jena 6. I am sick of black people tolerating violence: whether defending criminals like the Jena 6 or not raising hell about the fact that blacks are 10% of the population and 50% of the homicide victims in the USA (at th hands of other black people 95% of the time).
Call me a sell-out. Call me a self-hating negro.
Spend your time, money and tears on advocating for victims of violent cirme (who are disproportionately black) and not supporting them.

Yeah man, I agree. It sucks when people that are villians, criminals, rapists, murderers, and pedophiles in history are exalted as heroes. It’s disgusting isn’t it? You asked a great question too. “What is the appropriate punishment!!!!!!!!!”. Lol, I like all the exclamation points. I also like when you caucasian people get incensed as if you’ve ever; in your history as the vilest, most disgusting sub-race of people on the planet earth have ever been concerned with justice. The man Mychal Bell is a microcosm of the problems that face black America here in this damn wilderness. Due to the fact that he has not been taught who he is, he cannot know who his enemy is. When one doesn’t know who their enemy is, it does nothing but leave you open to be attacked and oppressed because you’ll just do whatever, whenever. That’s the conundrum that the black man is in. They don’t know which way is up and it’s sad because they look to the white man as their only source of light and all you people have done in your history is provide darkness. In the midst of all that confusion, the first thing that black people in general, and black men in particular do is lash out at each other because the black image has been so trodden down and villified. White people know the perdicament that black people are in and use their law enforecement, judicial, and penal systems to basically wait for blacks to go in the wrong direction like one of those bears that waits for the salmon that he knows are swimming upstream.
No race justifies their evil like the white race so spare me with the O.J. nonsense. Tell me about Robert Durst, Phil Spector, and Robert Blake. The only reason why so many more of these simple blacks think that a 50 year old man stabbed up two people and had no marks on him is because of the constant hammering away by the media in the last 12 years. You whites justify slavery by saying that blacks sold each other into slavery. You’ve justified the slaughter of over 70 million Native Americans with “Manifest Destiny”. You’ve justified the destruction of the cultures and peoples of Africa, China, Indian, Hawaii, and Japan through imperialism. You’ve justified the destruction of the aborigines of Australia by making it a penal colony for the worst of the worst white people. Even to this day you justify the destruction of Islam through this ridiculous “weapons of mass destruction” and “War on Terror” propaganda which shows that you caucasians are incapable of change and addicted to blood. You white people rule through confusion. This is how it’s obvious to the observant man or woman of the Lord that you people must be the physical counterpart of the devil. When we read the scriptures the Lord reveals that the 4th beast (kingdom or empire) is “diverse” from all the previous beasts, meaning more destructive and violent (Dan 7:7, Dan 7:23-27).
I don’t want to that nonsense of “it wasn’t me that was a slavemaster” either because you didn’t say some blacks support criminals, you just said blacks. Even if you didn’t, your cracker-ass is still going into slavery for the crimes of your ancestors as per the Word of the Lord (Psa 109:14, Isaiah 14:21, Rev 13:9,10).

Wrong!
White people are punished more on average for violent crime. That’s right. Most of their victims are other white people and the justice system will deliver some extra retribution for hurting a white person.
On the other hand, you rape a black woman or kill a black man and you get chump change in comparison.
Most of the people on death row in this country are there for killing white people. The real injustice is that if the Jena 6 had stomped a black man’s ass the way they whipped up on that white boy we wouldn’t be having this conversation. They might of gotten away with it totally or gotten probation.
So, shut $&@*$ up about white people getting away with stuff. Black folks get a 75% discount at the courthouse for hurting other black folks.

Black people need to realize him being black doesn’t absolve him of responsibility.
Most of us don’t know what kind of trouble this boy’s been in and one of the biggest problems in our community is not teaching our kids how to be responsible.
If this man had committed a robbery prior to being wronged by police, us black folk would completely forget the robbery and instead focus on the way he was treated.

There was the 19-year-old white man, convicted last July of criminally negligent homicide for killing a 54-year-old black woman and her 3-year-old grandson with his truck, who was sentenced, by Judge Chuck Superville in Paris Texas, to probation and required to send an annual Christmas card to the victims’ family.
Judge Chuck Superville sentenced a 14-year-old white girl, convicted of arson for burning down her family’s house, to probation.
Judge Chuck Superville sentenced Shaquanda Cotton to 7 years in prison for pushing a 58 year old hall monitor so that she could take her medicine.
Genarlow Wilson sits in prison despite being a good son, a good athlete and high school student with a 3.2 GPA. He never had any criminal trouble. On the day he was to sit for the SAT, at seventeen years old, his life changed forever. He was arrested. In Douglas County he was accused of inappropriate sexual acts at a News Year’s Eve party. I have read almost all of these post and I agree with some that support him and some that don’t, Yes this boy has had priors, but come on now, he has served almost a year in Prison, this boy isn’t even 18 , no one is saying that this boy shouldn’t have been punished, yes it was wrong, they shouldn’t have jumped that boy and yes it was wrong that he knew he was on probation and still did wrong, but come on now, he is about to spend a total of 28months on some bull, I live in Sacramento,Ca and have seen people get off on things that were way worse then what this boy has done, we hear about Brittney Spears and Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton everyday about the crimes they committed but we rarely hear about the time they spend in jail, and the time they do spend in their, their watching tv and having there hair and nails done, wtf is that about, this world is coming to and end, and as for black people, the system is made for us weather ur a man or an woman, so stay out of trouble, him knowing he was on probation and still joined in on the fight wasn’t a very good decision it wasn’t a good decision at all, but in the spur of the moment, I’m sure almost 8/10 people would have done the same thing, race is an issue that has been in this country for years and to have all that go on in jena and to have to live there, I probably would have committed the same crime, knowing that I would have to face the consequences, and serving almost a yr in Prison, just sounds insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where in the hell do you people get off saying some crap like this. Yes, he was in trouble once before, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that he’s being punished because of a crime he committed before in childhood. He’s a young black man, who’se going through it all and you folks could honestly get on here and talk down on him. I agree with number 2, 14 & 28. He was put on probation when he was younger for some other crime, and yes it was a slap on the wrist. But throughout the time he served in prison, that should be a damn deduction from the 18 months. Most of you are getting on here ranting and raving about how he should be behind bars because he should’ve known better. Half of you that’s on here writing attended the damn march in Jena, La. and now, you want to get on here and turn your backs because you reading some damn tabloids in the papers. You all should be ashamed of yourselves, because you were crying and cheering for his damn release, and now here you are on here talking down on him. I sit and read all of negative comments you people are posting and to be honest with you, you shouldn’t post anything if you’re going to be cruel. I understand that he’s been convicted before, but I don’t believe he should sit in jail once again, because if the judge knew of this crime, they shouldn’t've let him go in the first place. That’s violating a freaking amendment. But, it’s life and we have to go by the WHITE MAN’S LAW. This is absurd and justice needs to be done. My prayers go out to Mychal Bell and Family.
