Alicia Keys - Like You’ll Never See Me Again
It took a long time for “No One” to grow on me, but I appreciate and love it now. But this song is beautiful to me, I really have a strong affinity for it. It’s probably the heavy Prince influence. “Like You’ll Never See Me Again,” to me, is different from anything that Alicia Keys has done. I feel like with As I Am, Alicia Keys is musically touching uncharted territory for her. It seems as though she’s experimenting with sounds that were untouched on Songs In A Minor and Diary. I can tell, even in live performances of some of the new material, that Alicia is trying some new things, which I’m happy about. As I Am hits stores November 13th, and “Like You’ll Never See Me Again” is rumored to to be the second single.
Be on the look out for more information on Alicia’s third studio album, As I Am. Also, make sure you pick up your copy of the new album on November 13th.

I wonder what Prince is thinking with all these people biting his sound. Is he flattered or annoyed? I just wonder.
I was hoping that those first two singles by Alicia were simply the bottom of the barrel and that they made mistakes with those selections, but this is no better. Her voice sounds so hurt. What happened? I could totally have kicked this joint during mellow times but her voice seriously wrecks it. Takes away any feeling of relaxation because it sounds so grating.
I don’t think the music is all that great (it’s rather simplistic and sounds a little cluttered), but a smoother, mellower voice could have turned the track around. Janet can’t sing, but she can whisper the hell out of a song — maybe she shoulda done this one, LOL!

Eh..it’s ok.. There’s a different version of No One that plays on the Top 40 station, that sounds like a more finished and “lighter” Alicia.. I like that one, but not the one where she sounds hoarse…

Trying something different???
“No One” sounds like something she would’ve scrapped from her first album.
Strike 4 Brian!!!!!
This song is hot though, its WAAYYY better than “No One”
Its produced by Timbaland so that’s why it has that heavy Prince influence.

WHAT???? Alicia’s makes good music (on her last two albums) but her music is not reinventing R&B!
Kelis, Beyonce, Janelle Monae and Amerie are reinventing r&b, doing different things. Not Alicia who uses the same piano melody on each song NO NO!

I like it and I am sooooo excited about this album. I appreciate how ALICIA tries to grow as an ARTIST and not play it safe. That is what being a TRUE ARTIST is all about. She doesn’t just play it safe, stuck to what worked for her when she first got into the game. I have seen ALICIA play the piano, then change it up to a GUITAR… then just rock it SOLO. All of this while writting her own SONGS. I don’t care what anyone say’s, this girl is the TRUTH. She is not afraid of change. Sometimes people won’t like it… sometimes they’ll LOVE it…. but atleast she tries new things. I’ve seen people say that her voice is straining or that she is looking too SEXY these day’s (whatever that may mean, LOL) but all I see is ALICIA growing as an ARTIST. She’s EVOLVING that’s all. And it will pay off for her HIGHLY in the end.

I like it alot better than “No One”. I feel like No one was something she really didn’t put time and effort into, but just tried to have something out there for the sake of having an introductory single. Even though alot fo A.Key fans won’t admit to it, i will…but the vocals on that song are horrible, and I was really let down with her comeback with that. This song however, should have been the first single, and I definitley hear prince in the background. I appreciate it more because she put some effort into it…Im tired of artist just throwing fans slop just because they know we’ll buy it cuz its them. Im ready to get what I pay for..maybe one day guys.

I only give people props for doing “different” things if they do it WELL. Not everything different is good. This is a bad…very bad…Prince impersonation and doesn’t have even a fraction of Prince’s musicianship. If Timbaland did indeed produce this then this must have been a Timberlake reject — his production on that album is head and shoulders above this song.

I understand what you mean but her NEW music is not different or reinventing the genre at all.
Artists like Kelis, Janelle Monae and Amerie (with her new CD) are trying different things by being daring in the genre not doing the same thing (Example: “Kiss Kiss” by Chris Brown sounds like the same shit we’ve heard before, yet people still LOVE it and go out and by it cause it sounds the same) but people will say that their music is bad or their album is bad because it doesn’t sound like the same ol, same ol type r&b…..its called CONTEMPORARY R&B we need to learn more about its uprising in modern times.
And FYI her voice on “No One” is just fine to me, shes singing from the heart…I just am not feeling the song’s subject matter, too bland.

^^ ROFLMAO…..*DEAD*…… Kelis…… Amerie…. BEYONCE!!!…. reinventing R&B? I have heard it all. I hope you’re not grown saying all that. I like KELIS and her style and some of her songs, but I wouldn’t go that far. Amerie, that doesn’t even deserve a comment.. she’s pretty though, LOL! And Beyonce is cool, but i’m sorry she does the same stuff over and over. I always know what to expect, a bunch of hair flinging, hard dancing and a glitter dress. When she first came out solo, I thought “Beyonce better work!!”, I liked the sound and she performs her butt off for people!! But now, it’s old and as a supposed “artist” I wish she would grow. Pretty soon people are going to get tired of her music, because while her beats are catchy…. her lyrics aren’t about nothing. I hope her next album is better then this last one, because the last one really had to grow on me. If trying to reinvent TINA TURNER or DIANA ROSS is what you call “reinventing R&B” then that is unfortounate. LOL!! I’m not sure if Alicia is “reinventing R&B” but I do appreciate her GROWTH as an ARTIST.

Uhh, and who asked for your comment. No one was addressing you…
All of Kelis’ albums are critically acclaimed
I’m not a fan of Amerie but her album “Because I Love It” is good and is also a critically acclaimed album…and when I was talking about the naysayers who think that it’s bad because it doesn’t sound like you’re favorite boring, same r&b, I was addressing dummies like yourself. And yes she can sing (not as good as many of the females) but the girl knows how to harmonize with her songs, a talent that artists like Ciara and Cassie lack.
As far as Beyonce is concerned…let me retract my statement with that and move on…….

The same way you felt the need commented towards someone else on this topic saying Alicia isn’t reinventing R&B. If you feel that Amerie and Kelis are “reinventing R&B” then please continue right ahead and stop being angry with people for not beleiving so. I find it funny that you named KELIS and AMERIE (who are more POP artist)…. but left out artist like MARY J. or Jill Scott. You know…. TRUE R&B artist. At least you would have had an argument with them. And now you kick Beyonce out the convo, she’s not “reinventing R&B” anymore to you now? LOL! As far as you calling me a “dummy” for laughing at your comment…. i’ll leave it a lone, because i’m above it… I don’t do Internet B*TCH FIGHTS over trivial things such as this. Your comment was entertaining none the less…. but do yourself a favor and go look up R&B in the dictionary, before you go preaching about what is R&B and what’s not. God Bless and Kick Rocks

Once again, Lellow did it on this one.
Some artists just sing this kind of song with no feeling, but Alicia.. she ALWAYS knows how to get into the MEANING of what she’s trying to say.
I’ve already said I’m getting the album ONCE I heard she was making another album… even if I have to ride my bike to WalMart to go get it, I don’t care lol
And you guys, if you didn’t hear, on this album she says she’s going for a more raspery tone & definitely something you haven’t heard from her before. I mean like they say about Beyonce, you can almost guess that every song she makes has somehow the same “meaning” towards them.
Beyonce is kinda staying neutral for me, but Alicia is indeed “evolving”

I thought I wouldn’t like this song at first, but when I really got into the song and listened to the lyrics I really started to feel it. I think it has an old school feeling and I do get a sense of some prince influenced into this song. Can’t quite put my finger on which song it reminds me of though. I really hope her album is as good as her others. Alicia please save this R&B for the females, because slowly but surely the men are doing okay in there area of R&B.

it’s alright, nothin groundbreaking about it. plus biting off prince’s sound , is NOT “reinventing R&B”. Alicia keys sounds very strained and rough on her new songs, because she keeps trying to sing out of her limited range(she’s an alto). she’s a not a vocal powerhouse

This song is beautiful. I swear some of y’all don’t even listen to the lyrics of songs anymore. This is real R&B people. Why does it seem like, for a slow song to be considered good, it has to have simple and “dumb-downed” lyrics for people to feel it? Like someone else has said, Alicia Keys is “evolving” and I’m glad there is a singer out there who is doing something different and really going deep into her soul to put out something beautiful and thought-provoking. Good job Alicia, cuz I am impressed… Oh and one more thing the production on this track is amazing…

after reading this post, some of you need to learn the difference between people giving constructive critisim and hating. you people wear that word ‘hating’ out. I don’t even want to hear it in my everyday life, because I read it on this site so much. I don’t think I see anyone on here hating on Alicia, kelis or beyonce, a lot of people are just giving constructive critisim on all of the artist because as usual they were brought up. Not everything people say is hating, please learn the diffence. I’m sorry I have to say that because people throwing that word around for no reason gets annoying to look at after a while. people dont realize it takes one to know one. anyways, this song is nice its real smooth. alicia is something like a pimp. lol! It hurts to say this because in a mist of all these fake ass artists, Alicia Keys was there to keep me balanced and sane. Yall dont know, Im a big fan of Alicia but this is disappointing. Now, its like ” If aint broke, why you trying to fix it”. Like I said, Im sorry but she got to come harder or better yet, start the way she first started when she first came out.

I’m feeling it, i don’t really check for Alicia like that but this song got me in the first 10 seconds. No she doesn’t have the greatest voice but she can sing and i respect her is her artistry, she is one of the few female R&B singers i see growth from on EVERY album, plus she is humble and works hard.

I totally love this song! Timbaland did NOT produce this song Alicia and her partner Krucial did. Any way this song is amazzzzing! I have been hearing it on the radio the past two days and it totally outshines the other 10 songs that are on heavy rotation. I mean what do you people want? If you can’t appreciate this I don’t think Alicia would be fazed. You can’t really ask more of an artist than growth, good lyrics, good production. I mean damn homegirl got all the above going on. Speaking of the Prince influence if Alicia sung this song like say If I Ain’t Got You or even A Woman’s Worth, would it really fit this stellar track? Come on everything fits. The way she sings it I can FEEL the MESSAGE she is giving us. Imagine that a MESSAGE in a song! Alicia lost a loved one in the past year so I’m sure she was thinking about that, so this lyric is really real to her. As I Am is going to be a ground breaking CD like Songs in A Minor. I think people are too comfortable and ok with singers regurgitating the same material over a different beat. I mean really what is the difference between Let It Go and Should’ve Let You Go and really what is the difference between Check up On It and Get Me Bodied? (I’m not trying to compare anybody cause I appreciate those songs and singers for what they are) I’m just grateful that we can have a handful of artists who are not afraid to try new things and actually pull it off. Cause if you don’t like No One you are in the minority the song is #1 R&B and like # 4 Hot 100. I am loving it and can’t wait to hear what else Miss. Keys has in store for the world come 11/13!

Oooh.. I like this song alot!!! I definitly hear the prince influence (they don’t call him an icon for nothing) and I think that’s what’s drawing me to it. I like that Alicia is trying new things, but her vocals are just not my cup of tea. If I had one request it would be that someone with a more soft/melodic voice did a remake of this - I could see Mariah killing this song. However, this is a definite upgrade from No One. I don’t care how much radio shooves that song down my throat, it is still an off key “where is the love” remix.

all i can hope is that a lot of the people leaving messages in here are under the age of 25. i guess people forgot about all the great vocalists from the 70s and 80 that would tear alicia apart! patti, stephanie mills, angela winbush, whitney. this music is garbage and there is no reinvention. anyone who respects and loves prince that shes paying homage to him. thats it. its nothing new. alicia sounds like she’s a chain smoker….just like mary (who probably can thank her voice for all those drugs she did in the 90s)
all i can say is, there was far better music, but not anymore. the radio is damn near dead to me

LOL @ Monica, she DOES sound like a chain smoker. I like this song, but I don’t love it. Alicia has such a strong voice that when she tries the whisper thing, it’s not 100% On some parts of the song, it sounds like she’s struggling to hit the right notes. Ciara would sound good on this track because she has that whisper singing shit on smash, lol.

I feel like the only person in the world that really and truly understands what she is trying to do! The song is good, it is a weed smoker song in my opinion. The problem with music now is that people will not let there drive for making money and getting 2 dollars for a shitty album rest! Mariah Carey in my opinion has lost her touch, but I can recognize that she is older and your voice will not always be the same! In Alicia’s case she wants to shock and change directions in her career not please the fuck out of us fan, but make music that means more to her than we could ever understand! You have to let the music love your soul! No matter what song it is!

I must be the minority here b/c I love No One. Maybe b/c it hits close to home. Alicia Keys is definitly an innovator when it comes to r&b ans soul music. She has that Jill Scott, India Arie, Lauren Hill type vibe but yet she has that X-factor that appeals to mainstream. The girl is definitly talented and one of the best out here so far. She consistent (unlike some of ur fav powerhouse singers who’d rather make an album and then chill for like 5 years) and her not only are her lyrics her own but there mature and have meaning (unlike the claimed singer/songwriters who’s lyrics sound like nursery ryhmes) and she’s beautiful with a great voice (unlike a certain media hog). There’s a reason why she’s been blogged about almost everyday. She’s hot!!

A lot of people bring up back in the day’s powerhouse vocalists, as if being a vocalist means being a powerhouse. Nina Simone was one of the greatests vocalists of “back in the day” and is one of the best of all times. India Arie is a vocalist, Amel Larrieux is a vocalist, Angie Stone is a vocalist, Sade is a vocalist, Erykah Badu too, Lauryn Hill too, and NONE OF THEM top Whitney as far as power is concerned. Prince may be of “back in the day”, but he’s NOWHERE NEAR Wanya of Boyz II Men for example as far as voice control is concerned. Some people with powerful voices can’t sing for shit, some people with light voices are vocalists, vocalists have control of their voices and therefore use them as an instrument. A pianist plays the piano, a vocalist “plays the voice”. Alicia is very much a vocalist. People are complaining that she’s whispering, if she sang the same way all the time people would still complain and say she takes no risks, it’s like we’re so used to computerized-zero-emotion-having music these days that if it doesn’t sound “Auto-Tune perfect” [*] it’s not good. The more emotional you get singing a song, the more unusual you’ll sound. The loud raspiness in “No One” gave the song a reggae vibe and truly expressed how deep her love was. The whispering in this song makes her sound addicted to a love that makes her high, like she’s borderline crying. This is what putting emotions is all about. Everyone isn’t supposed to like it though, I just broke down what “vocalist” meant, and what Alicia is trying to do.
[*] Auto-Tune is a software used for studio singers (”singers” who can’t sing) to make them sound perfect and on key.

I, actually, think that this new song is heading Alicia in the right direction. The song is very sensual, heartfelt, sincere, and sweet, so I think that it should do well.
As for “No One”, I’m still not a fan of the song. To me, the vocals and the production do not compliment one another well enough; still the song is doing very well, so, in that respect, good for her.
Nonetheless, I don’t think that Alicia has anything to worry about. She has a load of fans and she’s off to a good start. And at this point, there could be no way for her to not sell big with this album; because not only are people starting to buy albums more, in general, these days, but every album that Alicia has released has debuted at # 1—and her single is currently #1 on the R&B charts.
So, while some find her music to be unimpressive, there are a whole lot of other people who seriously backs this girl up.

Alicia Keys has a unique style that stands out from most R&B singers just like Brandy it’s hot and fresh and not duplicating what someone else has already done which makes it so special. I am loving this song. I don’t care for “NO ONE”….
Alicia Keys can be a great singer, but she will need a vocal coarch to teach her how to make great use of her voice…. Vocally, she is very lacking. She is always all over the place. She would be a great rock singer, but for R&B, she needs a vocal coach.

I heard she’s wrorked with Linda Perry who has produced hit records for Pink on Missunderstood, and Beautiful by christina aguilera, so I think this will be a new era for her music, although I think there will be some people who wont appeciate her change in musical direction!

I find it funny that #175 is talking about Alicia’s music, yet whenever people say anything about Beyonce she is on here stanning everyone to death. You Beyonce stans kill me. If Alicia supposidly sounds the same on every song then so does your girl Beyonce. If anyone needs to reinvent themselves its her. smh

Whats with all this talk of reinvention talk, What reinvention? This whole year has been nothing but songs that sound 80’s! Everyone has done it but Beyonce and Christina Aguilera. Everyone, Ne-Yo, Ashanti, Maroon 5, Timbaland, Justin, Nelly Furtado, Diddy, Keyshia Cole, Britney, Mary J., T-Pain, Chris Brown, Kanye West and now Alicia Keys. Its not “re-invention” Its riding the wave of whats hot right now. How is Alicia Keys reinventing herself, she still looks the same and sounds the same, and NO I’m not hating, I love Alicia Keys, but I’m just bringing it to ppl’s attention, that she too is just riding the wave of what is the catchy hot sound with this song.

I dont necessarily care about whatever she is trying to do (ie reinvent, rip off, stay the same ect…) i just know that i love this song, and “No One”, so whatever she IS doing, she should continue to keep doing it.

Rip off? LOL…Sampling is hardly ripping off…Sampling is so common these days it’s not even funny…Ever wonder why your mom, dad or even grandparents get down with some of these “NEW” Rap/R&B songs?…Majority of the songs you listen to on the radio today have sampled something your parents and even grandparents use to rock to when they were growing up…There is nothing wrong with putting a new twist on something old.
Alicia did this song justice. Hate it or love it.

I think the song epitomizes GREAT music, meaningful lyrics, and incredible production. It is so amusing to me how so many people love to mention Beyonce, Ciara or any other hot artist out right now when new music arrives. It is quite disturbing that we are always comparing. Honestly, I love music, and there are multiple artist out who have amazing voices (Monica, Jill Scott, Keyhia Cole, Mary, X-tina Aguilera etc…) However, there is a difference between creating music and singing songs. Alicia keys is incomparable because she sings, writes, arranges, produces, plays classical piano, guitar, and she also creates songs for OTHER artist, check out “Impossible” on X-Tina’s stripped album, or “Warrior song” on Nas’s God’s Son album. That is why after 2 studio albums she has 9 Grammys already. She can be mentioned in the same breath as Stevie, Marvin, Donny Hathaway, Aretha, Roberta, Lauryn Hill, ETC. Not to mention she is classy and very articulate. Think about it. As a young black woman I relate to her, and I am proud that she represents freedom, and non haterism, so stop hating. Please. She will be a musical legend, guaranteed… And with her voice, she is singing in falsetto, it is an airy sound. Not my favorite, but I can tell she is singing from her heart and not letting any criticism get in the way. So I applaud her…And she is one of the best writers out right now, along with Jill Scott.

Is is just me, or has anyone else actually listened to Alicia Keys vocal abilities - It is so weak! She sounds like a hoarsed boy! RIDICULOUS! No wonder Jive Records begged Angie Stone to mentor her! If Whitney Houston would have stepped to the mic sounding like her - she never would have gotten a record deal! Apparently, they just handing the record deals out these days like water - It’s pathetic! And the performance on the AMA’s - she brought all of those people out as a distraction, and even tried to dance to avoid singing- Seriously, they need to stop playin’ that junk on the radio and tv, when she CAN’T SING!!!!!! Moving on…I won’t be WASTING MY MONEY TO HEAR HER STRAINING AND FIGHTING TO HOLD A NOTE!!!

Prince is one of my all time favorite artists. Alicia is one of my new favorite artists. The fact that there are Prince influences in her songs is a beautiful thing. I feel good for Prince too because at this stage of his career many artists are paying homage to his legendary musical genius. It is the ultimate compliment for any musician. Alicia keys is extremely talented and I hope she continues to draw inspiration from other music legends.
