NEWS + VIDEO: Hip-hop stars add voices to ‘Jena 6’ protest / MOS DEF & BUN B AT THE RALLY

jenanews.png Shout out to James B. for sending this great article to us about Hip-Hop stars and the Jena 6 movement. Mos Def, Bun B, Lyfe Jennings, T.I., and even that little youngin Soulja Boy spoke on it. I attached a snippet for you to check out, but make sure you visit MSNBC to read it in its entirety.

When the latest call for a protest over Jena Six came, it wasn’t led by Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson, but rapper-actor Mos Def.

Mos Def sent out a viral video urging students to walk out of classrooms nationwide this week in protest of the prosecution of six black teens — initially charged with attempted murder — in the beating of a white classmate in Jena, La.

And Mos Def is not the only member of the hip-hop community speaking out in this racially charged case. When Mos Def — known as a politically and socially conscious rapper — traveled to Jena for a march on the town last month, as he spoke to the media, legendary Down South rapper Bun B was at his side. Hip-hop soul singer Lyfe Jennings was also in attendance, and rappers like Ice Cube and T.I. have lent financial support for protests. [ READ MORE ]

After the cut is a September 20th video of Mos Def & Bun B at the Black Thursday rally. Oh yeah and keep sending your photos in. I’m going to make another update to the Jena 6 post soon.

  1. I’m really glad that artist and other celebrities help support the Jena 6. Sometimes when people like Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson back important issues like this, some people take away from what’s really going on. Thank to all for supporting the Jena 6!!!

  2. Quiche-A

    LAWD I LOVE Mos Def!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. abovethespotlight.blogspot.com

I am so happy people spoke out about this because it would have been a real tragedy if everyone turned their heads on this one. I am so proud of Mos Def he is a real leader

  4. abovethespotlight.blogspot.com

    Mos Def for President!!

  5. Fine N Mellow

Yeah Mos Def … Tell Them Like it is.

  6. Damn…..Mos Def, you’re f**king ass raps intelligently and you talk like a sh!thouse.
What da f**k up with that……Bum B, expresses himself more intelligently than you.!!!
    Keep rapping……let other motherf**kers do the speaking….SOB.!!

  7. Forest

I feel Mos’ anger, but I LOVE the way Bun articulated the situation. People sleep on Bun’s intelligence, forgetting that the brother is college educated. I’m glad hip hop is finally starting to say something again.

  8. OG_Sweetz

There are ALOT of small towns like that in the south. I’m just glad that, in this day and age of technology, word was spread quickly, so action could take place. If it hadn’t been for the internet, and you’re not from that part of the country or don’t have relatives there, people wouldn’t even know what’s going on…you wouldn’t have heard about this on CNN or MSNBC or any other “big” network…and that’s real..

  9. i jst ♥ how evryone iz tryna straighten thiz mess out. especially..all of tha celebz. it jst realy shows a different side to them ((political wise)).

  10. akamissj

Mos Def is so right! And while I don’t curse I understand why he was cursing so much because he’s angry & frustrated and I don’t blame him. Where are these so called “celebrities” priorities? Whatever happened to using your name to stand up for what’s right and fight against what’s wrong? Forget using your name to sale clothes and have perfume lines! Life is so much bigger than that! Don’t people realize that turning our heads to situations like the Jena 6 is making us as Black people take huge steps backwards?!? Don’t let Martin Luther King’s struggle be in vain! Black Celebrities and Black people in general need to step up!

  11. nadia

This is good. What about MEGAN WILLIAMS….Any info on her???

  12. how i see it

I so feel you AKAMISSJ. I so feel you right now. Amen to your post!

  13. J-Juslivinlife

    I agree 100%

  14. Ali

    video doesnt work for me

  15. ThinkAboutIt

Bun B makes many excellent points –

I think Mos Def is just frustrated and it came out in his language and the way he was trying express himself.

The bottom line is, you have to keep the pressure on.

  16. kmniles

Now the Mayor is upset that John Cougar Mellancap has made a song called “Jena” about racism. White people are really gonna revolt now, lol.

  17. So' Fresh

    Thats right!
    I dig it Mos Def
    I love him
    he’s sooo down man
i wish there were more entertainers like him and Bun B and Lyfe. Everyone cares about the BET Hip Hop Awards…

  18. Have Not Thought Of a User Name

It’s about time rappers spoke out (excluding Mos Def and Bun B cause they have been their from the start).

  19. hood_shit

    STUNT NOW bitches!

Bun B impressed the shit out of me yo…. love dat dude!~

  20. Ayanna

Mos Def is soooo FUCKING SEXY!!!!!!

  21. Bigma

MOS DEF- i Love him!! he is totally RIGHT… i was trippin when Michael Bells dad said he didnt have the money to bail him out and get a good defense/lawyer for his son or the JENA 6 !! I was like were the HELL is everybody with Money JAY Z, RUSSELL SIMMONS, OPRAH, TYRA BANKS, 50 CENTS {Black star power} should have stepped up and been ACCOUNTED 4 the only one’s i saw besides mos, bun b, lyfe was TYLER PERRY!! …… and half of these dudes in the game no what it is like to be Targeted and Black in america like JAY Z, SNOOP DOG, 50 CENTS, DIDDY!! were dey at’ …..

  22. Bigma

MICHAEL VICK- same thing here this boy is loosing millions over DOG FIGHTING somethin we do in the HOOD everyday! form ATL to LA to NEW YORK!! if you are BLACK you no about it if you live in the HOOD or grew up in the HOOD but no one is coming to his defense either! ALL these BIG TIME RAPPER’s HAVE PIT BULLS and fight them too but no one is standing up for MIKE VICK!! …..

  23. briana ツ

i’m glad mos def called out all those big celebrities for not supporting the jena 6 publicly. it really is ridiculous. even oprah didn’t do a show on it! i was shocked at that actually. she’ll do a show on anything and everything…just like tyra.

  24. nicholelibra

Oh gosh, don’t even bring Michael Vick’s name into this. So what if dog fighting is common in the community, still doesn’t change the fact that everyone knows it’s wrong. There’s no excuse for abusing and murdering dogs. Spoken like someone who doesn’t understand the value that a dog can have in one’s life. Unlike humans, dogs are loyal and love unconditionally.

Back to the subject. I hear what Mos is saying. Even though it’s not in it’s most eloquent form, due flat out frustration, the message is still clear.

  25. shannon75

This makes me proud and Mos Def spoke from the heart so that’s why he’s so passionate about this.

This is what I’ve been saying all along-no black students=less government $$$ for the schools.

  26. i know datz right mos def..tell it like it is..”TELL MTV DAT” mos always keeps it real.. all i know is racism neva left but it is just beginnning to show its face again..

  27. I really feel Mos Def’s Anger yo!!!! He impressed me….you can tell he’s truly pasionate about this! I Love It lol! And Bun B impressed the shit outta me! And like everyone else is sayin every mutha fuckin black singer, rappers and political figure should be donating money and showing up to them rallys! Theres no excuse…..shit even the white singers and them should be showin up!!!! Thats why i feel Mos Defs anger.

  28. yomama

i cant believe this post has only 32 comments now 33 how sad

  29. Trish

But isn’t he married to a white woman?

  30. umi

You tell ‘em what they need to hear! And n****s can’t even front on what he’s sayin ’cause a lot of ‘em are quick to act on somethin for their own good but can’t even take one day to show support when black people are being treated with injustice!!! And that’s just straight wack!
