MUSIC NEWS: JIVE DROPS KELIS? / NEW N*E*R*D ALBUM? / CLIPSE SIGNS WITH COLUMBIA

Monday, October 29, 2007 |

kelisdropped.jpg

Reports have been made that Kelis has been dropped from Jive, the label that houses such artists as Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and R. Kelly. Formally signed to Pharrell William’s Star Trak Music, with distribution through Virgin Records, rumors are that Kelis has been dropped due to disappointing numbers on her 2006 release, Kelis Was Here, despite plenty of guest spots, including a collaboration with her husband, Nas.

This doesn’t come as a surprise though. Kelis has been complaining about Jive for a while in recent interviews. Even though Star Trak’s distribution was through Virgin, it was later moved to Arista and, through the SonyBMG merger, she ended up with Jive.

“It was a case of being in the ever-shrinking world of the record industry and finding herself on a label she wasn’t signed to and without a champion,” says Kelis’ manager, Jeff Rabhan. “She’s a different kind of artist — very image and style-driven. It’s either something you get or you don’t.”

We’ll see though. Kelis hasn’t been able to do good numbers for quite some time. 2003’s “Milkshake” was a huge single, but the album Tasty only managed to be certified gold. Meanwhile, Kelis has been working on an indie dance record with Cee-Lo, which should be interesting (they collaborated on her last single, “Lil’ Star”), as well as a pop record with Guy Chambers that will be shopped around soon.

VIDEO: SEAN PAUL - WATCH DEM ROLL

Monday, October 29, 2007 |

Check out Sean Paul’s new video for the lead single for his upcoming album, “Watch Dem Roll.” I’m not too much feeling the song, I think he could have come harder for the first single, and the video is pretty typical. Nothing too new or groundbreaking, but I’m sure it’ll do well.

FASHION PICKS: CHANEL DOLLS

Monday, October 29, 2007 |

chaneldoll.jpg

chanelpieces.jpg The ladies are loving Chanel - I mean, what lady doesn’t or couldn’t for that matter? Since it’s days in the early 1900s under founder Coco Chanel, the line defines class and chic. Now under the leadership of designer Karl Lagerfeld, The House Of Chanel has added a fresh and young appeal that generates not only the celebrity, the modern woman. I must admit I visit my resident Chanel store at least once a month and should probably handcuff my hands so, I won’t go near my wallet…

When we think of Chanel in black entertainment - we might think of Foxy Brown and Lil Kim first because they obviously loved the brand enough to mention it in a number of songs. Beyonce was recently spotted in New York decked out in nothing but Chanel accessories. Alexis Phiffer, Kerry Washington…the list goes on and on. Black entertainment and fashion loves the brand and always will.

Check out the Fall/Winter and upcoming Spring Chanel collections at style.com. If you’re also lucky enough to live near a Chanel boutique, take a visit and see some of the above pieces - but beware, you will be very tempted.
