Event host and producer Tracey Edmonds, Book Author Rachel Vassel, Event host and Casting Director Robi Reed and Event host and actress Malinda Williams attend the ‘Daughters of Men‘ Book Launch in California on Tuesday night. (More photos after the cut).

dmen.jpg

In Daughters of Men, author Rachel Vassel has compiled dozens of stunning photographs and compelling personal essays about African-American women and their fathers. Whether it’s a father who mentors his daughter’s artistic eye by taking her to cultural events or one who unwaveringly supports a risky career move, the fathers in this book each had his own unique and successful style of parenting.

The first book to showcase the importance of the black father’s impact on the accomplishments of his daughter, Daughters of Men provides an intimate look at black fatherhood and the many ways fathers have a lasting impact on their daughters’ lives. The book features: Beyonce, Malinda Williams, Sanaa Lathan, Megan Good and more.

This is great idea for book, showcasing positive Black men who do the right thing even if they are longer with the mother of their child. How Ms. Edmonds got involved is a little weird seeing as how her soon to be husband did the exact opposite to Scary Spice. She needs to read the book to Eddie.

I hope a large number of young, black fathers cop it too - not just the sisters. It’s important that they get the perspective through the daughterss eyes and use it as yet another tool for building a healthy family!

Great Look!

I love to see black men taking care of their kids, I especially cherish that father/daughter bond, being that I never had it. I’ll check the book out at the book store, but I won’t buy it. LOL, just keeping it real.

Serena is looking awesome lately! This is a great book idea. It is so sad how I watch tv and movies and they have blubs about Black fathers not being there. I am shocked but realistically, are they wrong…hmmmm……. It’s sad when I see a black father walking their child to I smile so big…it’s heartwarming to know there are some men that do take care of their children….

Number 23! You are so right!

You know as soon as I got on this website I love so much, I saw that they had a post about Mekhi Phiffer( how ever you spell that) His fiance just gave birth to their son this morning. Who is also named Mekhi. So I was surprised to see Melinda in one of the Concreteloop’s post today. How Ironic.

I will definately buy this book. I love to hear positive things about black men, because we do have a tendency to beat up on them way too often.

Personally, I am glad to see that many people posted here have great fathers, mine was “absent” perhaps I will buy him a copy too, so that he can see what he missed! :)

This is a very nice gesture by the sister. To hear people tell it, you would think that the black father is somewhere hiding with Osama Bin Laden, bigfoot, and Elvis in a cave somewhere. It gets so pervasive that even black people that were raised with a black father chime in. Sanaa Lathan’s owes her entire career to her father and the doors he opened for her, especially seeing as it’s even harder for black women in mainstream movies than it is for black men. She still took part in a film like “Something New” and then went on Oprah to endorse that nonsense about the black man needing to “catch up” with the black woman (Job 8:8, Prov 17:6).

It still pisses me off that the cast of Soul Food, wanted out to focus on other projects, and other than Rockmond none of them have had steady work. I know Nicole was busy having kids, but what’s everyone elses excuse. I mean you give up a guaranteed job for a movie every now and then.

yesss! i just met the author and it is going to be a great book because she actually wrote about this subject because she didn’t have a father to be such a role model in her own life… how many of us can relate to that now?… so inspirational!

Thursday, November 1, 2007 /

This is good, just the other day I was saying all this gossip and backbiting and negativity laced with hate undre the guise of entertainemt should cease. I then said it would be nice if they had some of kind of bookclub of showcased books then maybe these fools would read and stop having somuch to say about people whod don’t even know they eixt and some people I believe sit at this computer all day and night and wait for concreteloop to post so they can give thire opinions, if they got paid they would be mutimillionares, its the same people at the same time everyday making comments, just plain sick, all up in this so ccall celebrity ish!!!! Some sick peole.

This was a wonderful event. Lisa and her team did a great job of showcasing this incredible project. Many of the women and their fathers featured in the project were there. They were all very warm and kind folks.

I am hopeful that the author, some of the ladies and their fathers will introduce this much needed conversation to the city of Detroit.

Good that black father’s are been acknowledged and appreciated by their daughters. A father’s input in their daughter’s life is so important. Some men just don’t understand what being a father is about so we need more events that highlight the one’s who do. Will be buying a copy.
