Solange Knowles recently sat down with Essence magazine and discussed everything from her recent divorce to her love of writing music. The 21 year old mother to Daniel Julez (3 years old) seems to be in a really good place in her life right now. Here are some snippets:
ON DIVORCE & BABY JULEZ
ESSENCE.com: As you know there’s a lot of mystery surrounding your relationship with your husband, Daniel Smith, so let’s just go ahead and get that out of the way. Are you still married?
Solange Knowles: Well, I am no longer married, but I think it’s very important not to dish details. We are friends and we coparent our son. When he gets older I don’t want him to read anything about me saying anything about his father or vice versa. When there’s a child involved I think the less information given is best.
ESSENCE.com: Speaking of which, let’s talk about little Daniel Julez. How old is he now? Is he talking?
S.K.: Oh gosh, yes, he’s more than talking and has a smart mouth already. He’ll be 3 this month.
ESSENCE.com: Considering the talent that runs in your family, do you think he’s headed for the industry?
S.K.: Unfortunately, it seems like something he’s interested in. He really likes the limelight.
ON BEYONCE & THE INTERNET
ESSENCE.com: So you don’t aspire to your sister’s level of superstardom?
S.K.: No, I don’t want to get that far. (Laughs) I feel really bad for my sister. I’m always like “Oh, let’s go to the mall” or “Let’s go here” and she can’t. I enjoy having that.
ESSENCE.com: But do you ever feel as if you have to compete with her?
S.K.: No, I think that as artists we’re totally different, and when this record comes out it will express that. But I admire my sister so much. She’s one of my role models in that she is successful and classy. She’s very diplomatic and lives her life true to self.
ESSENCE.com: She’s been known to say she doesn’t go on the Internet because of all the craziness. Do you avoid the Web and reading what’s in the blogosphere?
S.K.: People actually e-mail me the links all the time, and I’m like “Okay, thanks I really wanted to see that.”

I actually have Solange’s first album and it’s very soulful and unique… I think the problem is that her management (her daddy, Mr. Matthew Knowles) and the rest of her team, is trying to market her in the same stream/genre as her sister (duh.. Beyonce Knowles)!!! When Solange is a bit more mellow and deep, more in the same genre as say a Heather Headley. However I wish her all the best… and if her first single catches my attention I just might go cop the entire album!
I agree with #5, we wouldn’t even know who Beyonce is, if she took off all of the extras, she would just look like a regular round the way girl, with a shape.

I actually like Solo. She has what seems to be a very real, round-the-way girl personality. She seems like she would be easy to talk to, and not snobby.
Her singing is ok, but she is a great writer. She actually helps B write alot of her songs.
I knew the marriage wouldn’t last. I don’t even think it was a real marriage. The only pics I saw of them together were those wedding pics. Mama Tina was most def not happy in them.

And what’s so hard to understand about Solange not wanting to go as far as her sister?…First of all, she seems to appreciate the fact that she can retain some sense of normality (i.e. doing regular things like going to the mall). #2 She really doesn’t need to go that far. Well…I tell ya what….she should give her sister tips on how to do an interview. I think she did a good job on this one. And as many have stated already, Solo and her ex-hubby were more than likely PRESSURED to marry because of the child. You know this is one family who is dead set on APPEARANCES!

The interview sounds genuine and non robotic. I like that. Upfront and honest. No preplanned answers and even if they were she seemed to take the questions head on. Good luck with the solo career. Despite what people say about her, she seems to have a really sweet spirit , she has talent that goes unrecognized ( I didn’t say she could sing), and plus she seems to have some type of personality (unlike you know who).
And on top of that she is not getting her child taken away from her like some people in the media…lol….she is handling her shit.

Hate to compare but….at least Solange actually writes her songs instead of taking credit for adding a few words. (Remember the “Irreplaceable”/Ne-Yo situation and the fact that “Resentment” was nearly exactly the same as Jazmine Sullivan’s demo version?)
I’ve liked and respected Solange since I heard the tracks she wrote for Kelly’s debut, the arrangements and phrasing were excellent. (the “you see with me you’re never liable to pain” bit on “Simply Deep”) She has real musical talent and not just a voice. I can’t wait for her album because I heard Bilal and Q-Tip are meant to be on it, so I hope it has more of a neo-soul direction instead of the pop direction Matthew made her take last time round…
Oh, forgot to add and she actually has a brain cell to her name when she’s in an interview.

I agree! I think that Solange is wise beyond her years, and her flaws make her human. A lot of young women can relate to her. She sounds like she has a good head on her shoulders, and having heard about some of the people she’s working on this next album with—-Cee Lo, Bilal, Marsha (of Floetry)—-she definitely has my interest peaked. I really like the 2 songs that were posted on CL earlier this year.
I think trying to compare Solange and Beyonce is like comparing apples and peanuts. They aren’t the same, people! The only thing about them that’s alike is the fact that they share the same parentage. I think that Bee was groomed to be exactly what she is, an international superstar. Solo has always been the rebel. She didn’t let her mom style, and she went about her own way on her first album. There’s a lot of refreshing, respectable qualities about the youngest Knowles sister, and I can’t wait to see what she has to offer the world.
I’m not feeling the pictures. Nor do I get this around the way image. At all. She is well spoken though. But I’m sorry, I’m not buying her image. It seems like an attempt to distance herself from Beyonce’. We all knew that marriage wasn’t real to begin with. It was all about the Knowles maintaining their wholesome image.

Celebrities are always complaining about the media scrutiny and the lack of privacy, but trust they thrive on that crap. when your name is in the media whether it is in a good or bad light, that means the focus is on you. people get in the industry to get attention. the more people talk then the more in demand they are. I wish they would stop complaining because that is what you signed up for. true some of the stuff can be mean and hurtful, but I would be crying all the way to the bank!

I agree @ #30…The image she has is, in my opinion, to distance herself from Beyonce….Like Ashley Simpson and Jessica….That’s what i thought after reading the interview….Ashley had black hair the whole rock/punk style…The rebel…I think she had the image to purposefully set her apart from her sister and it worked. Th type of music she put out, i think that was more her taste vs pop (i could be wrong) but her actual look was definetly (in my opinion) a strategic approach. I think she actually ended up selling more units that her sister… Now that she is established, she dresses and looks more like her sister. Just my thought…

I find what Solange DIDN’T say way more interesting than what she did say in this interview. For instance, she never denied a relationship with Lil Wayne, just that she didn’t leave her husband for him (which I believe, that relationship was over soon after the marriage, I’m sure).
Solo is cool I like the fact that she building her own road and not ridin Bee coat tail.

I read an article a few years back after Solange’s “not-so-great” album came out(JUST MY OPINION) where she was saying she would like to be like her sister…I also read an article where Beyonce stated she prefers to be more relaxed and in jeans and a T-Shirt and no heels when she is not on tour or doing a gig. I have yet to see her not looking like she just stepped off a video shoot, but as much as the PAPS follow her I would look like a million $ getting out of bed too. I must agree that Solange appears to be mature in her thinking/statements with the exception of stating “I don’t want to go that far.” perhaps she meant she doesn’t want to have to put on a disguise to get ice cream with her son she wants to…Who wouldn’t wnat to make millions hand over fist!!
