Solange Knowles recently sat down with Essence magazine and discussed everything from her recent divorce to her love of writing music. The 21 year old mother to Daniel Julez (3 years old) seems to be in a really good place in her life right now. Here are some snippets:
ON DIVORCE & BABY JULEZ
ESSENCE.com: As you know there’s a lot of mystery surrounding your relationship with your husband, Daniel Smith, so let’s just go ahead and get that out of the way. Are you still married?
Solange Knowles: Well, I am no longer married, but I think it’s very important not to dish details. We are friends and we coparent our son. When he gets older I don’t want him to read anything about me saying anything about his father or vice versa. When there’s a child involved I think the less information given is best.
ESSENCE.com: Speaking of which, let’s talk about little Daniel Julez. How old is he now? Is he talking?
S.K.: Oh gosh, yes, he’s more than talking and has a smart mouth already. He’ll be 3 this month.
ESSENCE.com: Considering the talent that runs in your family, do you think he’s headed for the industry?
S.K.: Unfortunately, it seems like something he’s interested in. He really likes the limelight.
ON BEYONCE & THE INTERNET
ESSENCE.com: So you don’t aspire to your sister’s level of superstardom?
S.K.: No, I don’t want to get that far. (Laughs) I feel really bad for my sister. I’m always like “Oh, let’s go to the mall” or “Let’s go here” and she can’t. I enjoy having that.
ESSENCE.com: But do you ever feel as if you have to compete with her?
S.K.: No, I think that as artists we’re totally different, and when this record comes out it will express that. But I admire my sister so much. She’s one of my role models in that she is successful and classy. She’s very diplomatic and lives her life true to self.
ESSENCE.com: She’s been known to say she doesn’t go on the Internet because of all the craziness. Do you avoid the Web and reading what’s in the blogosphere?
S.K.: People actually e-mail me the links all the time, and I’m like “Okay, thanks I really wanted to see that.”

Though she’s young, she really seems mature esp. having gone through divorce so soon, but she has the right perspective on coparenting – and raising her son – which is always the priority.
I expect she will be a better business woman than anartist – and she’ll probably succeed at both. She definitely has the pedigree.

My opinion is unpopular but ohh wellll….Solange is probably the only person with a real musical identity in the Knowles camp, and sorry Kelly but I actually respect Solange more. I think many people refuse to give her the benefit of the doubt because she’s B’s sister. The marriage was a fiasco, okay get over it, she was on 17, I blame the parents for bad influence/decision. As for the pregnancy, accidents happen, BOTH Daniel and her are to blame, but the girl kept the child and decided to raise him, parenthood at age 17 is not “cute” but at least she learned from it and took responsibility. Her child is happy and healthy, time to MOVE ON now. The girl is obviously intelligent, well spoken, mature and knows who she is and what she wants, at only 21? I respect that.
We can say and think she will never be as big as Beyonce, but the same was said about Janet at the beginning of her career when she was being compared to Michael, so who knows? Janet is a better businesswoman than Michael, in a far better financial situation, although she faced a divorce at 18 years old she is happy in her personal life now, and she can come back more easily. She is NOT messed up like her big bruh. Solange? She wrote for Beyonce, Michelle and Kelly. Also, she’s been in movies, they use her voice for kids toys, she did the Wal-Mart commercial theme song, so basically she’s PAID. Solange is not in the limelight but she’s smart and has a good sense of business. That’s why I respect her more.
I can’t wait to hear the album, I’m curious to hear the music. She’s finding her niche. I love her new sound, that electronica thing mixed with R&B is dope. Who is she working with? Marsha Ambriosus of Floetry, Bilal, Cee-Lo, Q-Tip, now if that’s not evidence that the girl has a minimum of TALENT I don’t know what is, I mean look at the names, we ain’t talking about Gangsta Boo and T-Pain, these are some serious people she’s working with. Even her debut was cool for a 14/15 year old girl, believe it or not it was a decent debut, but now she’s 21…on another level. I like Solange, and I wish her success.

Essence need to be interviewing Kelly to help her with her album. Essence is getting so tabloidish. I feel sorry for Kelly…they should have asked her about why her daddy don’t promote Kelly as much as he does Beyonce.

I live in Houston, and I have been hearing rumors for a long time about Solange’s husband Daniel…or shall I say “ex” husband now.
I been knew that they were divorced. They tried to keep it a secret for a while, but they know that secret couldn’t last long.
Well anyway, the rumor here in Houston is that Solange divorced Daniel because she found out about his “hidden” sexuality…if you know what I mean. Now y’all can take that and run with it. That rumor has been going around for too long. I honestly think it’s true. There is too much evidence to pin on him.

I love Solange and I’m glad she finally decide to tell her fans something even though I already knew she was divorced, and the reason being was that Daniel was a major hoe he was messing wit just about ever black girl in the Valley (Los Angles Area) and the baby was only like 3 of 4 months old. This idiot would have Solo and his other hoes at his football games (he played at a JC in LA not at the University of TX like the Knowles wanted you to believe) all at once, he had no respect and no consideration for her as his wife or the mother of his son. I’m proud of her, and kind of admire her strength for moving on, and I can’t wait to go get her new album her and Letoya are both dropping early next year I’m so excited I can’t wait!

#5 – If you didn’t know, Brad and Angie have 2-4 BODYGUARDS (depending how many kids are with them – lol) that are with them constantly (not to mention the nannies). You don’t see them in the pics because photogs want Angie and Brad.

I actually saw Solo in a Denny’s on the Vegas Strip (VMA weekend). It’s was about 3:30 a.m. and she was just there laughing and chilling. She is really pretty in person by the way. I understand that those people have BODY GAURDS, I have also seen pictures and live video of people walking around without them. Like I said before if someone like them or JANET JACKSON can walk around and have a day out on the town…. then so can she, PERIOD. As far as her carreer…I think she might have a little something working for her. She is trying to find her own way and she is still young so she can try different things. And the fact that she is writing for her sister, kelly and others as young as she is says a whole lot about her. So I am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. To me she seems strong willed and intelligent (can’t say as much for her sister who to me seems a lil not so smart and easily trained).
The # 1 way to fuck up a child or parent-child relationship is to lie to a child.Tell them anytime afterwards, and it still doens’t take the lie back. Good Luck on that one!!!

Solange will never be like her sister Bey because she is not as marketable. Meaning she lacks Bey’s more mixed/Creole look. Solange got knocked up for attention. The lightskinned sister with the “good” hair and the green eyes gets all the love while the darkerskinned one sits in the background while everyone oohs and aahs over the other one.
