I do not agree that “mother’s know best” ALL the time. There are some things you, as a grown man, need to be able to do and learn for yourself. You need to be able to make your own decisions whether they are in accordance to what your mother agrees with and doesn’t. Personally, I feel even if my mother does not like the person I am dating or so on, that it should not dictate MY feelings for them because I’m the one in the relationship. And obviously, there are intimate details about them and dynamics that she is not going to be able to understand. In theory, just like you have other arguments with other people, you agree to disagree. You accept your child’s decision and support them nonetheless, not constantly talk bad about their significant other and cause them unnecessary stress.

My paternal grandmother did all she could to stop the wedding…

Eventually my maternal grandmother realised my father for the sweet loving humble dutiful man he is, who always does right by his family, and they now get on great. I dont know if my paternal grandmother ever got round to liking my mother, but she did find a grudging respect for her. The problem there was they were too alike, very strong outspoken women.. I think my grandmother’s problem was she knew she wouldn’t be able to control my father’s life anymore..
