I don’t know what you’ve heard, but when the west was on top, people in NY bumped it. I personally love west coast “gansta” rap from the early 90′s. Everybody out here was listening to ‘the chronic’ and ‘doggystyle’. But the difference was that the quality of music, and lyrics was far more superior than the repetitive, and simple music comming out of the south right now. It served as influence and competition that made NY artists do better. We had acts like Nas, Big and Wutang all coming out at a time that the West was dominating. You can go and name a couple of acts from NY that are wack. But like 85% of southern acts are garbage and sound the same (D4L, TPain, Franchise boyz, soulja boy, hot boys, lil bootsie, lil flip, mike jones…damn I can keep going on and on.)
and when was the midwest on top? One artist(Nelly) making hit records is not a whole region on top. His music sounds the same most of the south anyway.
