It’s been a few weeks since a Jena 6 update post, and let’s just say nothing but drama has been surrounding the case.
I’m sure everyone saw that youtube video that hit the net a few weeks back. The video allegedly shows one of the Jena 6 defendants rolling around in the donation money that supporters sent in. Since those photos still have yet to be verified, I will give these kids the benefit of doubt. Let’s just say I was highly pissed off when I heard about it though.
Now, on to some other drama with the case. The reputable organization “The Color of Change” who has been in the forefront of the whole Jena 6 rally was recently attacked by popular radio show host Michael Baisden. Baisden, who coincidentally has been a big supporter of the case as well, claimed that they were misusing donation money and that it wasn’t being used for the actual defense fund. The Color of Change denies the allegations and even provides proof that they are handling the donations correctly.
Here is what the Color of Change wrote:
Marcus Jones – the father of Mychal Bell, one of the Jena 6 – was a guest on Michael Baisden’s syndicated radio show on Monday, November 5th. Marcus Jones and Michael Baisden used the occasion to attack and slander ColorOfChange.org and our executive director. Baisden continued to do so on November 6th. Both Baisden and Jones made several false and misleading statements which have raised the concern of many of our members.
This just makes me sick, the other kids haven’t even went on trial yet and the whole support group has been divided three times over. We got to do better people! This is getting ridiculous.

WOW….thats all i can say! A damn shame…
im so disgusted. im glad this shit came to the light.
COINTELPRO (Counter Intelligence Program) was a program of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation aimed at investigating and disrupting dissident political organizations within the United States.
black people we must do betta, we don’t need no help from white folks to look bad we do it out damn self
Come on, brauh?! What is yall doing? Its bad enough yall looking bad, but yall go and do some stuff like this? That’s crazy!
*tmr*
WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!! This is a simple case of “Divide and Conquer”!!!!!
Divide the people, kill the trust and kill the voice!!!!! If there is no proof of
mishandled funds and they can prove where the money went, let it go and
remember the bigger picture!!!
It’s a sad situation. I would, however, like to commend CL for continuing to follow this story. In this celeb/entertainment focused society, it’s extremely easy for important stories to get lost in cracks.
As far as these developments go, the lack of unity has always been the one thing to hold us back. We can complain about white folks all day, but it don’t mean shit if we can’t stick together long enough to accomplish anything. If there were/are issues, the press is not place for that. Without solidarity, these boys have no hope.
It is sad to say but black people will never get a break when it comes to handling large sums of cash…why do black ppl always have to be accused of embezzaling the doe…?
I believe that the money is being handled right (prayerfully) and if not SMH at the fact that people use something so important to our black community to get their own selfish wants.
SEE THIS IS Y PPL TALK ABOUT US….U TRY TO DO SOMETHING GOOD. AND SOMEONE ALWAYS OUT OF THE BUNCH TURNS IT INTO SOMETHING NEGATIVE AND GIVES WHITES A REASON TO TALK ABOUT BLACKS….. SO I HOPE NONE OF THIS IS TRUE IF IS THEN I’M HIGHLY PISSED MYSELF……
Why would Micheal Baisden use his radio show to oust the COC organization? I think he should have addressed that privately. I know Micheal Baisden has done a lot of good through his radio show but I can’t help but wonder some things are just for ratings.
First of all, we don’t know for sure that was donation money. The money doesn’t go directly to these boys. You actually think somebody was crazy enough to hand them a large amount of cash? Come on now. We don’t even know if the money belonged to him anyway. You know how people always frontin’ for pictures. Everybody quick to jump to conclusions, and don’t even know the facts. Dang.
We black people have had a problem with corruption for a long time. We make ourselves look bad without anyone else’s help.
::sigh::
Have mercy!!!!
I hope it is not true. the young men involved should really be concentrating on their future and not the bling…..
#11 and everyone else, while i agree with you, those dudes should be focused on the charges and lying low. When you are giving people the opportunity to believe that you are up to no good you DESERVE the backlash. Stupid is as stupid does. #12, Exactly.
mwell i don’t know did what with what but this is why i think the reperations movement is a waste of time. a, we’re not getting them and b. if we do the money will be mispent and not benefit us black folks. this country sux. it’s amazing what 400 odd years of enslavement can do to an uprooted people and what even longer years of colonialzation has done to Africa
Colorofchange is a rip off. My mother and I both ordered some Jena 6 t-shirts back in Sept. when we all were supposed to wear black in support, and guess what, we still haven’t gotten those good ol’ “Support the Jena 6″ shirts and here it is November. Go figure.
I understand that the young men didn’t make the video, someone took the images of them off of myspace and made a youtube video. But they have a lot more to be concerned about that making a myspace page.
It is a shame that those young men don’t understand better — But the Jena 6 controversy is not about the young men specifically, it is about the miscarriage of justice in the events. The time that was being considered was excessive for the crime committed. And yes, they committed a crime and should have been punished according to the crime, not according to their ethnicity.
Somebody needs to get those young men and explain what an extreme disservice they have done.
As is always the case –
Distraction causes division. Now instead of everyone working together to deal with the injustice that was done, they are fighting one another.
They have been successfully distracted from the real issue at hand.
Michael Baisden is a very opinionated man and I’ m not sure if every opinion that he has should be broadcast over the air. I commend him for being the first person that I heard report on the Jena 6, but in the process, he has dogged people whom he feels should be more involved. He speaks of how MLK and other people who preceeded us were advocates for our community and compares his stance on justice to theirs, but I don’t remember hearing about them calling prominent leaders, actors, etc out and dogging them for not being involved. It makes me wonder is he only involved for publicity sake. Everyone may not be passionate about every issue that plague our community and that is okay. Only those who are sincerely interested and willing to help and sacrifice should be involved with this Jena 6 issue anyhow. Just because a person is rich or a celebrity or in the public eye does not make them obligated to get involved. There is a saying that if you expect something you will be disappointed, no expectations, no disappointments. Michael Baisden needs to stop expecting people to care and rally with those who do.
I don’t know why some are quick to attack Michael and support COC. It sounds like folks are being very naive. If they’re misuing funds their asses should be put on blast. Michael Baisden is the main reason for the march. I’m a faithful listener and he is always using his show as a vehicle to “spread the word” from politics to health to music…and the list goes on. I see nothing wrong with that. He was the only one focusing on the Jena 6 case before other djs started following suit. So no, I don’t believe he is doing anything for ratings. It’s the format of his show on a daily basis.
I was listening live when Michael Bell’s father was on the radio. and HE himself said Color of Change was not giving the families anything. The stuff on their website isn’t proof, anyone can doctor up some documents. If I heard it straight from the horse’s mouth which is Michael Bell’s father, they’re the one’s in need of most of the money, why wouldnt I believe him? COC is a fraud in my eyes.
Yes, here we are… two different parties who were originally aimed at bringing justice about have been turned against each other.. over what? MONEY!!! GO FIGURE! People, let’s get it together.. And since that was a radio show now people are misinformed and/or are jumping to conclusions because people believe EVERYTHING they hear AND SEE (the youtube video)..
I just don’t know what to SAY!
All around SAD
CRABS IN A BARREL..Everyone wants to be the leader
typical black behavior….
Even though they could have done it in private, I can see why Michael Baisden and Marcus Jones attacked the COC. All the money that was donated towards this case yet somehow, nobody thought to bail Mychal Bell out? I don’t know. Something just isn’t adding up.
idiots…
whatever the real scenario is, this is effin ridiculous.
why must we do this to ourselves black people? WHY?!!
Wait for the facts but this better not be true
I HOPE THIS ISNT TRUE, I CANT TAKE MUCH MORE OF THIS
THE DEVIS IS ONLY AS STRONG AS YOU ALOW HIS ASS TO BE!
I just want to say dont belive the hype. i know some of the people who have been on this case from the very beggining. they were the ones intstrumental in making sure the news of the case got out. Color of Change is included in that group of people. first of all Baisden`s show is sponsored by the CIA (check his ad list) so i dont pay him no mind. how u gon be radical when u funded by the government? Big perm Sharpton needs to go somewhere for real. he`s been misappriating funds for years so i cant get with it. those people have worked hard and those funds have been distributed very appriopriately and always on the up and up. it is so sad that the work that they have been doing has to be negated by this slander. we need to be careful of who we get our news from. the day of the Rally i read the CNN article and the information was wrong. wake up people u r being lied to. and until we realize that, we will never get off the plantation
also as jmms529 said the money doesnt go directly to the families… it is for the defense fund. they were never suppossed to be getting large sums of money handed to them. that would be missappropriating the funds at that point. please please please dont believe the hype lets stick together and concentrate on the job at hand this is all about dividing and conquring. the families all mad an agreement to stick together i the beggining and that is what go them this far. lets not let them fall apart!!!
1. This is sad all around.
2. If the families really think the money is being misused by the COC, hire a forensic accountant to do an independent audit. That will settle everything.
3. I’m suspicious about Marcus Jones. If the lawyers all say they have been paid and the fund was set up SPECIFICALLY to pay legal fees…what’s the problem? He he upset b/c he really believes COC is a fraud or is he really upset b/c COC did what they said they would do with the money and didn’t send any checks his way for his own personal use? I’m just asking.
4. I would think if the money wasn’t going where it was supposed to, the LAWYERS would be the FIRST ones crying about not getting paid. But as far as I know, the lawyers haven’t said a word.
Since they are a not-for-profit, the public has a right to see the books. All the families or Michael Baisden had to do was request to see the books. It’s like someone said though Baisden is VERY opinionated and somethings are just for ratings.
I have seen the Youtube video and I couldn’t tell who it was, just because the boys had Free Jena 6 shirts on don’t me they are the 6 boys involved (everybody got them shirts).
If COC can produce their books/papers and other documents proving where the money went I don’t see why people are accusing them of stealing.
People need to know that James Rucker of Color of Change has been providing evidence to the Baisden people behind the scenes for several months now. Plans were well under way for a September 20th event weeks before Baisden and company got involved. The original planners tried to cooperate with the high-profile folks, but we were pushed off the page completely. That’s okay; low-profile organizations like Friends of Justice lack the capacity that a Baisden or a Sharpton bring to the table–we understand that. We were willing for these guys to do their thing, and we were even willing for them to take all the credit for Jena. But this latest smear campaign crosses a line. I have been involved in Jena since January, and have now made eighteen trips to Jena. I can report that none of the families are profiting personally from the money that has been donated. Robert Bailey (the My Space guy), made a foolish move, and he knows it. But the money in the video was specially donated for survival expenses and was spent for that purpose (unfortunately, after Robert made the MySpace video). I was with the family throughout the entire process and can attest that nothing unethical was done by anyone.
Hopefully, we can put this whole thing behind us. Mr. Baisden should allow Mr. Rucker to come on his show and explain the situation. Then Baisden should personally apologize and we should all move on for the sake of the Jena 6.
WTF! I had a strong feeling that something like this would happen, especially after I saw the BET awards! I just hope that chump pays for a course in Publuc Speaking before he faces the media to say “its not me”! Matter of fact all the damn Jena 6 should use some of that damn money to obtain a better VOCABULARY!
I get emails from colorofchange.com and I was sent one in reference to this attack on them by Baisden. I think the problem lies with the one family thinking they were supposed to receive the money directly. This was never the case. The money was set up for the LEGAL DEFENSE FUND for all 6. They have copies of the cashed checks made out to the legal defense teams on their website. The money was never suppose to be sent to Marcus Jones,Mychal Bell’s father. If you go to their website they have alot of documentation to back up their claims. This website was founded by black people trying to make a change during Katrina and has since taken on numerous causes that would have otherwise been swept under the rug in this country. Well why would Mr. Baisden get on radio and say all these things if they aren’t true??Baisden wants to be the sole source of fundraising for the Jena 6 from this point forward- I think that it is pretty obvious whats going on here. Greed isn’t considered one of the seven deadky sins for nothing people.
I see the COC organization have made their way to this site.
i hope this isn’t true myspace and/or misrepresentation of funds. this just proves why so many of US fail to support one another. very sad.
Michael Baisden just admitted that he had false information and apologized. So, it’s over now.
Being a loudmouth does not equate embodying leadership, and shock value has never held the same impact as substance when taking up arms and following one’s passions. I’ve felt for a long time that too many of our leaders become blinded by their own influence, and begin releasing statements for the same reasons empty artists release albums–to stay “relevant.”
I don’t dispute anyone’s desire to be vocal–we need that–but it needs to come with strategy. I commend Baisden, Sharpton, Dyson and all the rest for their initiative, but until we as a people change what we allow to impress and wow us, we’re condoning and maybe even encouraging this kind of infighting.
I’m SO happy to see how pretty much everyone here is fed up with this kind of irresponsibility from the people who claim to have taken up the mantle of leadership. Through your consciouness, yall defy the people who claim that our generation is lost, and that’s why I love the Loop!
I BEEN SAYING THIS FOR A LONG TIME …YES THEY WERE ON MYSPACE AND THATS THEM. WTF IS WRONG WITH SOME BLACK PEOPLE. NO ITS NOT THEM, AND THE WHITE MAN THIS AND THAT. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOURSELF AND KNOW THAT BLACK PEOPLE ARE JUST AS THE PROBLEM THEN WHITE PEOPLE. YOU CAN LOOK AT THE WAY THIS BOYS CARRIED THEMSELVES ON THE BET AWARDS . THERE CASE IS STILL GOING ON AND THEY AT SOME DAMN AWARD, TRYING TO SHOW OFF. THIS IS SOMETHING TYPICAL FOR A BLACK PERSON, WHO NEVER HAD ANYTHING. THEY LIVING IN TRAILER HOMES AND WHAT NOT AND NOW THEY WEARING SHYTE THAT THEY CANT AFFORD. PEOPLE DONT WANT TO ADMIT IT, BUT ITS A FACT. I AM NO SUPPORTER OF THE JENA 6 OR WHOEVER WAS APART OF IT. YOU GOT THIS TWO FOOLS RUNNING AROUND SPENDING SUPPORTERS MONEY HAVING A GOOD ALL TIME. BUT PEOPLE STILL WILL STAND FOR THEM….WTF IS THIS WORLD COMING TOO. THAT IS ALL
I hope the photos in question were fake. On the other hand, I was dissappointed by their appearance on the BET Awards. I think they should use their time in the spotlight more wisely, by making people aware instead of trying to be celebrities. I feel that them showing up in that format, dressed as wanna-be rapper thugs was a slap in the face of the movement on their behalf. They should have been more presentable, instead of trying to show out. They could have used that format to speak out against racism and unfair legal systems. They should remember why they are famous and not be proud of the part they played in the situation. I, too, marched in Jena and hope it was not in vain.

Michael Baisden just admitted that he had false information and apologized. So, it’s over now.
_______________
That’s certainly a good thing… but why not take the time to do some due diligience and get all of the facts straight BEFORE you make the accusations on a nationwide syndicated radio show?
@41.Peacekeeper: That’s good to hear. Hopefully, that’s a lesson learned. We all jump to conclusions sometimes.
I really hope none of these allegations are true and the money is going were it needs to be…..SMH…..
Stupidity is a sin
This is a comedy of errors and black people deserve every bit of it. They put their spirit into the laws of this society and this marching nonsense (Jer 3:23, Lam 4:17). Then you have these greedy bastards posing as black leaders that are shaking hands with the damn white man behind closed doors and meeting in his masonic lodges (Ezek 34:1-6, Zech 11:4,5). Even the T-shirt that the sister is wearing in the picture shows that the white man has given the black masons jurisdiction over this nonsense. Look at the “A” in Jena on the sister’s T-shirt. All of this was a setup from the start. Every “black empowerment” organization in existence is foul as hell and can be exposed if the white man wanted to expose them because they’re based in money and this society (Jer 5:25-31). Brothers and sisters are going to have to realize that none of these 3-piece suit wearing, bourgeois, fraternistic negroes really give a damn about the black community (Matt 9:35,36). They are fighting for the right to be head house negro and to have all the “power” that accompanies that. Baisden, Sharpton, and these different hirelings actually disdain the mainstream black community in the same vain as the Pharisees hated their own people and worshiped the white man as god (John 19:15). This is why Christ castigated the Pharisees; not because of what they said, but because they didn’t do what they said nor did they believe in it (Matt 23:1-6). They want to have the biggest share of the bone leftover after the white man finishes his steak.
This situation only gathered so much steam in the first place because some dirt could be cast on it. Notice that the Megan Williams story has evaporated into thin air because that story could not be controverted by the media. The only thing that they had was that the girl may have been mentally disturbed which shows the bitter hatred that the white man has for our people that her mental competency would be an issue in a case like that (Ezek 35:5). Then, the fact of the matter is that those young men, and the majority of black people in general do not have trained minds, so they do not know or understand how to conduct themselves to be blameless (Prov 1:22, Hos 4:6). That’s the only way to expose this society and it’s facades. As long as black people continue to be simple, it provides fodder for the white man and these house negroes to cast doubt on every racial situation. Basically, my point is that I don’t care how much money black people think they have or what type of prestige you hope to attain, they’ll never gain validity to their existence by appealing to whites. Never. I like these type of things though because what the Lord is doing is breaking black people down and all their vain agendas and plans until they’re forced to come back to him in the spirit of Truth (Psa 145:18, Isaiah 65:16, Hosea 5:15).
I hate to say it but I personally feel that Michael Baisden can sometimes be a mess starter. He’s unprofessional and immature. He has good topics on his show but for me he always seem to mess up what could be a really good show, and I end up turning my radio off before the show is over, especially when he ridicules people for praying. I dont put too much stock into what he says bc he just wants attention for himself.
now this is ridiculous.
I first heard about Jena 6 on Color of Change and then I later heard about it on Michael Baisden. I listen to Michael Baisden on occasion but I have to say I hate the way he trys to call out other people who are not advocates for the Jena 6. Just because your not on the front lines of the Jena 6 case it doesn’t mean your not doing things to advocate and protect the black community. I’m sorry, but there are plenty of black people catching hell all over this country and their stories are not making national news. I think a lot of people who are not typically activists jumped on the Jena 6 bandwagon, and it was their first time ever being activist. And instead of just humbly stepping up to the plate, they have the nerve to try to call other people out on THEIR service to the community. It’s ridiculous. The problem w/ the Jena 6 is too many people are trying to get attention and get recognition for being activist. I’m curious id people would be this supportive ofthe Jena 6 if it was 6 little black girls. I can see some of these same advocates calling them “grown” and “out of control”. Girls are expected to be so much more responsible. I’m sorry, but where does personal and parental responsibility come into play with all of this?
II hope some other black leader(s) step in and mediate this disagreement. The issue at hand is too important to be allowed to fall apart over minor disagreements.
Drama, Drama, Drama, and more Drama when the truth comes out.
This is just disgusting! I can’t believe that photo of that young man rolling around in that money… so sickening! It makes me not even want to support the cause.
Many may not realize that ColorOfChange is not the only fundraiser involved. Apparently the families established their own fund sometime back that was the source of the Benjamin’s in the MySpace pictures. The $10,000 donated by David Bowie went to the NAACP fund. A good many “funds” set up on blogs were frauds, and that money has disappeaared.
This lack of coordinating the effort has been a minor nuisance for quite awhile, but since the Craig Franklin article in CSM, the nuisance factor has been growing. Even Howard Witt is backing off his support:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-jena_bdnov11,1,5899685.story
“Parents of the “Jena 6″ teens have refused to publicly account for how they are spending a large portion of the cash, estimated at up to $250,000, that resides in a bank account they control.”
This is just the beginning of the public relations nightmare. The spin is unraveling. DA Reed Walters is a Democrat. He agreed to four straight probations for Bell’s previous felonies — that’s hardly evidence of a biased prosecution. The details of Bell’s beating of his girlfriend will be published nationally if the MSM wins their suit to unseal his records. The eyewitnesses to the convenience store robbery tell a very different story to the one told by Color Of Change.
To top it all off, we have a burned school and a suspect among the Jena 6 with two property destruction convictions. Walters isn’t looking for a head stomper; Walters wants to convict an arsonist.
You thought the turnaround for Duke was a headsnapper? You ain’t seen nothing yet.
(but this all could change if some leader would stop living in this fantasy world concocted around Jena by Alan Bean and ColorOfChange, recognize how the rest of nation is really perceiving Jena, and start a campaign to correct the screw-ups and to prepare hard-news press releases to counter the negative coverage to come)
Micheal Baisden goes on a lot of witch hunts! I heard him recently blasting Crefo Dollar for appearing in Ludacris’s Welcome to Atlanta video which was from 2004-2005 OLD NEWS! I’m not a big fan of Crefo but he was only standing in front of a church for 1 second in the video to represent religion/church in Atlanta. Micheal is reaching. He will be taken down eventually. When you are constantly judging people and putting people on blast, you set yourself up to be put on blast.
on the tom joyner show a month ago, the father of one of defendents told them that even the donation that the $10,000 David Bowie sent down there has disappeared.
On point Judah!
WOW, just WOW @ DSF! What a MESS!
This is why I get so upset about “the white man” talk. We’ve got so much in-house clean to do, we don’t need to even think about without. This is just shameful.
