I’m curious: what, again, is most people’s basis for “disagreeing” with homosexuality (especially those people who claim not to treat “them” any differently)? Also strange is the assumption that people in the entertainment community “all of a sudden” are scrambling to appease the gay community at any cost. When you still have the abundance of ignorance displayed in such instances as Busta Rhymes’ reaction to a gay fan in Miami, and the way the “accusation” of homosexuality is still regarded as a high insult in the rap community, I just don’t see how the entire industry has figured out some new trick of the trade.

Instead, it makes more sense–and is far less disheartening–to posit that there are many Black celebs who now realize that 1) HIV/AIDS is NOT a “gay” disease, as people were supposed to stop believing some years back (and, in fact, if you are going to define it by the demographics that report the most new cases, it is a “Black woman’s” disease); 2) not only were many of the people who shaped our beautiful culture gay themselves, but many of our community’s pillars and people who affect social change today are as well; and 3) with a significant percentage of our community *IDENTIFYING* themselves as homosexual, it’s time we get over our institutionalized homophobia, since a) it’s fueled by Western ideals, and b) as we say over and over again, we cannot achieve mobility until we attain solidarity.

Ultimately it comes down to this…being gay, bisexual or lesbian is NOT a choice. Nobody can tell me otherwise because I am gay. Ask yourself, what logical person would honestly wish or choose a lifestyle that has so many negative views attached to it? I can say this because i am a gay man but I also have Jamaican parents. Needless to say, it can be a difficult situation for my family to accept and it’s something we struggle with daily.

Yes, the bible has its opinion on the gay lifestyle, but it also speaks about: 1) Love for God and 2) tolerance and love for all of God’s children. I agree with you wholeheartedly; Christians’ reluctancy to question the discrimination, oppression, and destruction that Christianity has wrought upon the world is the very reason I question lately whether I want to even be a “traditional” Christian. It’s funny to see this convo being discussed on this site. Some people ask; why do gay people choose to live that way..? Why be gay when God dissaproves of it..? Why don’t you just keep it real and just say that you are gay instead of being ashamed of it and be on the DL? Why should we as a people accept gay people..?

When are we as a Black people going to wake up and realize that divided we will fall… Gays,Straights,Democrats,Republicans,Old,Young..etc.We have come so far as a race to still be stagnated in 2007. Sad but true.

The day that you can tell us readers why you chose to be Black is the day that gay people will tell you why they choose to be gay. Lets communicate and understand one another so that we won’t continue to be divided as a people. Gay people are not asking to be accepted but respected. If you are black, I don’t doubt that you understand that logic.

Being a black male, it is already hard enough for us in the world to be treated with equality,dignity and respect,so adding GAY to the equation only makes it more difficult to acheive goals and be a positive force in our society.Accepting who we are is not our issue but everyone else’s,resulting in the DL Brutha. You cannot be upset with a brutha if he chooses not to advertise his sexual preference for the world to know. His sexual preference is just a part of what makes him who he is..not just who he is..Get it..? It seems that black people get empowered by tearing down our own people who are different or have different lifestyles.

Ask yourself this question,” Why do I even have an emotion or strong opinion about something that does not directly affect me if I am confident in who I am as a person?” Whether gay or str8,that isn’t important to me if I am not interested in involving myself with you in a personal realm.

Lastly, why would gay people choose to be gay knowing that they would not be accepted by the vast majority and with making that choice,there would be the possibilty of not being accepted by family and friends,let along society? First, I have to be the biggest Mary fan in the world. Being a fan of Mary, I don’t agree with the comment that Mary is a pawn. Mary’s music was/is a reflection of her life. Her music has done more positive than negative for her black women fans. Everytime I’m going through something, Mary’s entire catalog is in heavy rotation and it does something uplifting for my soul. If she made it through all she’s been through, I can get through whatever I’m facing. That’s artistry at its best. Mary doesn’t have to “cater” to the gay community. She will sell regardless because of people like me. I’ve always felt Mary is one of the realest entertainers of our time and I commend her for acknowledging and thanking her gay fans. Most of these artists are ignorant as hell to bash homosexuals. You don’t have to agree with it, but to blatantly disrespect someone over something that has nothing to do with them is dumb…escpecially considering gays are part of the reason they eat. Gay money is no different from straight. Its all green! Again, being the biggest MJB fan, I have read or bought just about every magazine she’s appeared in. This isn’t the first gay magazine she’s been in. She’s done just as many gay mags and she’s done Vibe!Homosexuality is just one of many hot topics right now therefore an article like this thats nothing new for Mary is getting alot of attention at the present time.

For all the religious fanatics…just a couple of questions for you:
Do you personally know anyone who is gay? And if you do, have you actually sat down and had a discussion with that person about their sexuality? Open your mind to understand these people before comdemning them to the same hell you are going to for judging them…according to the word you use to defend your feelings on the topic.

Let’s be real for a minute. The Bible is a book written by men who were inspired by God. Every verse, chapter, and story were told by men who received a message from God or who supposedly walked with Christ.(…if Jesus Christ really walked this earth)
If a prominent religious figure who we all believed walked with God and lead a devoted Christian lifestyle woke up one morning and said God came to them in a vision and commanded he/she gather all Christians to dig a hole underground because God revealed He was destroying the earth with fire, how many of us would go in that hole? Not many! We’d look at that person like they were crazy! The Bible is the only book that gives us insight on how we all came to be. It gives us comfort to know after death we’ll go to heaven if we live right. It controls us. The truth is no one knows how we got here or what will happen when we leave. No one is around from the beginning and no one has come back from the dead to give an accurate account. Why is it that every sinful act in the Bible is still found today? Premarital sex, killing, homosexuality,adultery,lying, muslims and other religions (false gods)etc….And why aren’t miracles present today? When is the last time you’ve seen a sea part? I”m sure that would have come in handy with tsunami’s and the flooding in N.O.(MS. and AL. too) due to Katrina! When is the last time you saw a stick turn into a snake? When was the last time you saw a single man knock a building down with his bare hands? We don’t know if those events took place. Throughout history, events of that nature never happened again. But we all can say we’ve seen the bad..why? ITS HUMAN NATURE. People have evolved but we haven’t changed when it comes to our innateness.

Now let’s be blunt: Homosexuality is about what feels good to an individual sexually. So is heterosexuality. One way offers reproduction, the other does not. But to accept one and not the other is beyond me. A Christian will be the first to say homosexuality is an abomination…God make Adam and Eve….you know the rest. But seriously, I know I’m not the only person who has seen two male dogs having sex. They weren’t humping to make a puppy. They were humping because it felt good. So are the dogs going to hell? Do you not want a dog ?Or would you give away your dog if you saw your male dog engaging in such acts? LMAO…its nature people…its nature!

One “sin” isn’t greater than other. Its not a cop out to do what you want to do. Its fair. You can’t judge a homosexual and point out their so called faults without pointing out your own. If you really took into account your imperfections, you’d be more tolerable of things you do not understand nor choose to understand. It amazes me homosexuals get such a bad rap for something that doesn’t concern heterosexuals. You can’t catch being gay. What a gay person does sexually does not directly effect you. You don’t send a liar to hell. You don’t send a thief to hell. You don’t send an adulterer to hell. You don’t send a killer to hell. You don’t send a muslim to hell. You do not send someone who disobeys their parents to hell. You don’t send fornicators to hell. Why is that? Because one of those sins happens to be you!

Whether your higher being is God, Budha, Allah, or a tree in your yard, if that higher being makes you a better person good for you. Until your house( your spirit) is clean, stop worrying about whats going on outside if it doesn’t interfere with your house and well being.

Im sorry, I’m a fan of Mary and like gays and all but I will not support them in their ’cause’. I’m just suprised because Mary is a Born Again Christian. Sin is sin including, lying, fornication, homosexuality, lust, etc. You will always have DL’s because some men that have sex with other men don’t consider themselves gay, they just think of it as a different sex partner. I’m so sick of the ‘poor gay victim’ using society’s disapproval of their lifestyle as an excuse to use women and kids to cover up. At that point, not only are they gay they have become manipulating liars and users because they are the ‘victim’. DL’s play the ‘gay victim of society card’. I have more respect for the flaming gay than a DL coward. I have gay friends but still don’t agree with their lifestyle just like I don’t like men that cheat on their wives or people that lie,etc. The Bible clearly states that liars, adulterers, the effeminate, fearful, murderers, etc. will have their part in the lake of fire! This is not hate speech because this is talking about more than gay people, its talking about people that practice sin ( no matter which sin you choose) or have a lifestyle of sin instead of turning away from it. It is the truth and we will all see and being offended won’t matter. Love ya Mary, but disappointed.

LOL I am not here to bash. Mary looks good on the cover of The Advocate. The reality is She is not homophobic and she is a christian. Being gay is not a choice. It is not wrong either. Jesus talked about every sin. He did not talk about homosexuality. GOD LOVES HIS GAY CHILDREN JUST LIKE HE LOVES HIS STR8 ONE. I THANK GOD FOR MAKING ME GAY. I also thank him that I am srtong enough to not let people bring me down with their words. What is so funny is that when u are homophobic U are hurting your fellow man.
