Mary J. Blige is the cover model for the popular gay and lesbian newsmagazine The Advocate next month. Inside, she dishes on her new album, “Growing Pains”, homophobia in hip hop, and her work fighting HIV/AIDS:
On having gay fans:
“The majority of them are [gay], and I have to really make sure that they know I’m paying attention to the fact that they support me, and I support them.”
On the reason she became involved in the fight to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS:
“It was the elephant in the room that nobody’s looking at. It made me be like, Oh, this is right at our front door. This can touch us. So why wouldn’t I want to get involved with something that can help save all our lives, save everybody’s lives?”
On homophobia in the hip-hop community:
“The real hip-hop, the real people don’t even care about that. They’ll love you and accept you no matter what because they know who they are. There are a lot of people trying to figure out who they are and what they’re gonna be. There’s a lot of confusion in that. Confusion causes a lack of identity. I’ve heard a couple of guys say foul things, and those guys are not around me anymore because when they say things like that, I’m looking at them like, What makes you so scared? You don’t know who you are?”

I agree with you wholeheartedly; Christians’ reluctancy to question the discrimination, oppression, and destruction that Christianity has wrought upon the world is the very reason I question lately whether I want to even be a “traditional” Christian. Look at colonization in Africa, the Crusades, the Salem Witch Trials, Manifest Destiny…more people have been killed or at the very least displaced in the name of religion more than for any other reason – we’re talking the deadliest social force of all time. First of all, I want to applaud Mary for reaching out to the gay community who strongl y support her and relish her artistry..she is definitely one of a kind. I for one have been a faithful fan since buying You Remind Me. Truth be told, there are a lot of artists out there to where their heterosexual fanbase left them, but their gay fanbase remains steadfast and true and that is real talk. If u dont know ask artists like Patti Labelle and they will tell you.
As a black gay male, it baffles me that people think homosexualiy is something that is a choice. I no more choose to be gay than I choose to be black. The reason that argument NEVER holds water is bc if its indeed a choice then EVERYBODY at some point in their life was at the crosswords and had to make a choice, and last time I checked, all the heterosexual people I know didnt made a choice to be either straight or gay, they just ARE.
What a lot of people dont know is that the reason Mary is reaching out a hand to the gay community and is investing her energy into fighting AIDS is bc Kenny Greene (for people who is into music he was the lead singer of Intro) wrote basically all of the classics that we all know and love from Mary from You Remind Me, Reminsce, and Love No Limit. Unfortunately, Kenny Greene died of AIDS and was gay and he was one her best friends and mentors and she heads the Kenny Greene Foundation. So she is not kissing anyone’s ass in the gay community. A special person in her life who was instrumental in her success and a good friend died AIDS and brought the disease close to home for her.She wants to help. . Nowadays, almost everybody knows someone who has either died or living the disease.
It also kills me that some people think bc they are heterosexual they have a VIP pass to heaven. Newsflash- You dont. No sin is greater than the other. So if you sitting here fornicating before marriage, coveting, or doing what ever what under the guise of heterosexuality you are not excused. First, I have to be the biggest Mary fan in the world. Being a fan of Mary, I don’t agree with the comment that Mary is a pawn. Mary’s music was/is a reflection of her life. Her music has done more positive than negative for her black women fans. Everytime I’m going through something, Mary’s entire catalog is in heavy rotation and it does something uplifting for my soul. If she made it through all she’s been through, I can get through whatever I’m facing. That’s artistry at its best. Mary doesn’t have to “cater” to the gay community. It gives us comfort to know after death we’ll go to heaven if we live right. It controls us. The truth is no one knows how we got here or what will happen when we leave. No one is around from the beginning and no one has come back from the dead to give an accurate account. Why is it that every sinful act in the Bible is still found today? Premarital sex, killing, homosexuality,adultery,lying, muslims and other religions (false gods)etc….And why aren’t miracles present today? When is the last time you’ve seen a sea part? I”m sure that would have come in handy with tsunami’s and the flooding in N.O.(MS. and AL. too) due to Katrina! When is the last time you saw a stick turn into a snake? When was the last time you saw a single man knock a building down with his bare hands? We don’t know if those events took place. Throughout history, events of that nature never happened again. But we all can say we’ve seen the bad..why? ITS HUMAN NATURE. People have evolved but we haven’t changed when it comes to our innateness.
Now let’s be blunt: Homosexuality is about what feels good to an individual sexually. So is heterosexuality. One way offers reproduction, the other does not. But to accept one and not the other is beyond me. A Christian will be the first to say homosexuality is an abomination…God make Adam and Eve….you know the rest. But seriously, I know I’m not the only person who has seen two male dogs having sex. They weren’t humping to make a puppy. They were humping because it felt good. So are the dogs going to hell? One “sin” isn’t greater than other. Its not a cop out to do what you want to do. Its fair. You can’t judge a homosexual and point out their so called faults without pointing out your own. If you really took into account your imperfections, you’d be more tolerable of things you do not understand nor choose to understand. One of the reasons HIV/AIDS is striking our comminuty with such full force is our view toward homosexuality.
The oppression of gays in our community is leading soooo many guys to lead double lives and act irresponsibly. There are many men who, if given the choice, would live openly and never date girls. Our community has a twisted view of manhood. We are more focused on how you pants are sagging and how hood you act than being educated and responsible.
If you don’t wear a white tee and fitted hats, you are looked at as white or less than a man. Therefore, you have to put up a front.
On TOP OF THAT, we don’t talk to our females. We must remember that the number one demographic dying from HIV/AIDS is black women, not gay men.
We need to openly talk to our sisters and daughters about protecting themselves and also not making a man feel like he has to lie.
Mary’s stance has NOTHING to do with her loving the gay lifestyle. However, she does recognize the danger is ostracizing gays and ignore the problem that the ignorance of the subject has caused. The stigmas attached to HIV/AIDS activism in our community are preventing it from being effective.
Many people on here posted the issue of sin and homosexuality. I will never try to force anyone to think being gay is right or wrong. Each struggle is individual as Mr. Baldwin pointed out above. HOWEVER, how can the black church whose leadership consists of sooooo many gay men point fingers?
Why would you alienate these young (and old) people instead of embracing them?

The Bible may be God’s word (inspired by Him), but was written by men whose intent was to promote their religious and spiritual beliefs. You can decide to stop having sex before marriage the same night and not do it again, you can choose to stop stealing, lying, gossiping etc. and seek help to stop those sins that have become an addiction. The black community is not flourishing and it’s a reflection of it’s disdain for order. Many of you “enlightened” sisters will be the first ones to rant, bitch, and complain about the black man when your HIV test comes back positive. The majority of these young brothers and sisters that claim to be homosexual or lesbian are just confused because this is a generation of black youth that have no strong black parentage and they will thusly succumb to any and every demon out here (Prov 30:11). It’s amazing how much homosexuality has grown in the black community since the “civil rights movement” (Prov 12:26). The white man’s belief system has rubbed off on blacks in many negative ways. See all these things that have befallen the black community follow a sequential order from blacks despising order (Hosea 4:6). From the incarceration of the black man all the way to the inability of the black woman to maintain a productive relationship (Deut 28:15-68). I don’t understand where acceptance of homosexuality fits in with the improvement of the black community or the family structure and I doubt if the “advocates” of homosexuality could provide any reasoning other than “opening your mind” which is the same thing Satan told Eve (Gen 3:5). The black men that do accept it usually do so, so that they will not offend the black man’s two gods, the white man and the black woman. What’s truly sad is that most of these black people that can conjure up 3 and 4 paragraphs of nonsense questioning Christ’s existence can only manage a “That’s so sad” when a racial incident occurs, proving that everyone is above reproach and a dissertation except for the heterosexual black male.

It’s no concern to me whether your affliction is a choice or not. There are pedophiles and rapists that are allegedly compelled by an uncontrollable urge to do what they do, sometimes from birth (Psalms 58:3, Prov 16:4, Rom 9:21-23, etc.). The fact of the matter is that any codified law is concrete and used to subjectify the people. The only room for interpretation is the room purposefully designed by the lawmakers. Rape and pedophilia are against the laws of this land, while homosexuality is not so it’s left up to the cultural mores of mainstream society to establish of their own accord what is taboo and what isn’t taboo. Where man’s “opinion” comes in, is where Satan comes in (Prov 12:15, Prov 16:25, Prov 18:2, Isaiah 5:21, Malachi 3:13-15). Just because the white man allows homosexuals to gallivant around this society does not mean that their actions are not reprehensible. If homosexuality is genetic then “science” has to explain the aspect of getting “turned out”. When you think about it, that’s an indirect way of people acknowledging that the people who draft and pass the laws are gods (Rom 1:25).
