MARY J. BLIGE COVERS THE ADVOCATE
Friday, November 16, 2007

Mary J. Blige is the cover model for the popular gay and lesbian newsmagazine The Advocate next month. Inside, she dishes on her new album, “Growing Pains”, homophobia in hip hop, and her work fighting HIV/AIDS:
On having gay fans:
“The majority of them are [gay], and I have to really make sure that they know I’m paying attention to the fact that they support me, and I support them.”
On the reason she became involved in the fight to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS:
“It was the elephant in the room that nobody’s looking at. It made me be like, Oh, this is right at our front door. This can touch us. So why wouldn’t I want to get involved with something that can help save all our lives, save everybody’s lives?”
On homophobia in the hip-hop community:
“The real hip-hop, the real people don’t even care about that. They’ll love you and accept you no matter what because they know who they are. There are a lot of people trying to figure out who they are and what they’re gonna be. There’s a lot of confusion in that. Confusion causes a lack of identity. I’ve heard a couple of guys say foul things, and those guys are not around me anymore because when they say things like that, I’m looking at them like, What makes you so scared? You don’t know who you are?”
Thanx Michelle!

“What makes you so scared? You don’t know who you are?”
I know that’s right, Mary! Enough said.
“Everybody’s journey is individual. If you fall in love with a boy, you fall in love with a boy. The fact that many Americans consider it a disease says more about them than it does homosexuality.” -James Baldwin
One of the reasons HIV/AIDS is striking our comminuty with such full force is our view toward homosexuality.
The oppression of gays in our community is leading soooo many guys to lead double lives and act irresponsibly. There are many men who, if given the choice, would live openly and never date girls. Our community has a twisted view of manhood. We are more focused on how you pants are sagging and how hood you act than being educated and responsible.
If you don’t wear a white tee and fitted hats, you are looked at as white or less than a man. Therefore, you have to put up a front.
On TOP OF THAT, we don’t talk to our females. We must remember that the number one demographic dying from HIV/AIDS is black women, not gay men.
We need to openly talk to our sisters and daughters about protecting themselves and also not making a man feel like he has to lie.
Mary’s stance has NOTHING to do with her loving the gay lifestyle. However, she does recognize the danger is ostracizing gays and ignore the problem that the ignorance of the subject has caused. The stigmas attached to HIV/AIDS activism in our community are preventing it from being effective.
Many people on here posted the issue of sin and homosexuality. I will never try to force anyone to think being gay is right or wrong. Each struggle is individual as Mr. Baldwin pointed out above. HOWEVER, how can the black church whose leadership consists of sooooo many gay men point fingers?
Why would you alienate these young (and old) people instead of embracing them?
Your minister of music.
Your choir director.
Your deacon.
Even your preacher…
They could all be gay men/women and you bash them.
Jesus said that he came not to CONDEMN the world but that the world may be saved.
Instead of attacking the gay population, try reason. Try love. Because MOST gay people don’t need your opinion anyway.
The bottom line is homosexuality is out of control in our community and yes, it IS a form of oppression that is not equivalent to the civil rights struggle but akin to it.
The only way to stop the devastation of HIV/AIDS is through education, NOT through hate….
I’m spent…

I’m glad you said that HORIZON BLAKE, less we forget that the Bible was not written by God himself lol. The Bible may be God’s word (inspired by Him), but was written by men whose intent was to promote their religious and spiritual beliefs. With that said, everything you believe to be true about homosexuality (or anything else for that matter) based on the Bible may be tainted by the biased author. In that respect…opinions is EXACTLY what it is made of.

@60. True, sin is sin but the problem is that all sin, you can turn away from through Christ. You can decide to stop having sex before marriage the same night and not do it again, you can choose to stop stealing, lying, gossiping etc. and seek help to stop those sins that have become an addiction. The problem is that gays are saying they did not choose to be gay and are saying they were made gay and can not just turn it off and do not want to because this is the way they were made. They don’t consider being gay as a sin. This is the dangerous part of the gay view and this sets them apart. They don’t see that their attractions and sexual behavior as a choice and is in essence calling God a lie because God says that sin is a choice and his word includes homosexuality in the sin pool. Why would God make you gay and then call it sin?? This is ludacris and herosy. The audacity to take God’s mercy for granted and as an excuse to continue practicing that lifestyle that he told you not to. Gays don’t want own up to their sins but the rest of us have to. What makes them better than other sinners to where they get a free pass?? But, all sin he has redeemed us from once we first recognize our sin nature, repent, turn away from the sin and follow him and recieve his gift of salvation and redemption! You can’t do this if you are in denial.

Mary looks great on the cover and I love “Just Fine”. I understand why she supports the gay community because they’re her biggest supporters. I went to a MJB concert and there was so many gay men there I was in disbelief (I didn’t know there was so many openly gay blk men) same thing @Mariah Carey concert I went to last year gay men everywhere. The gay community are loyal to their favorite celebs that’s why ppl like Madonna, Cleine Dion, Mariah, Rihanna, Kanye, Beyonce, and many others cater to them…they buy albums and they run the entertainment business. God created us all with his/her soul within yen & yan, good &evil, light & dark, gay/straight and everything in between.

Hi everone. I’m Thomas and I am black and I am 13 years old.
My mom tells me the only wrong that man can do is intentionally hurting each other.
Why does your god hate gay people?
Is it because people still think they are intentionally spreading diseases?
Why can’t people question things that could have been made up?
Why are there so many holy books stating what is wrong and what is right?
Will I go to hell for asking myself these questions now?
Will I go to hell for thinking for myself?
Will I go to hell for seeing the good in people everyday?
Will I go to hell for being gay?
Can anyone help me answer these questions. Thank you!

Everyone knows what your god says, but what does your rational inner self say?
Mine says not to condemn, hate, bring down anyone else. And this coming from a black man. Isn’t that something?

Hold up. Since when is every gay man a downlow man being all sneaky and spreading diseases? Since when should homosexuality be held accountable for that? Why some of us black people so damn ignorant? My dear cousin told me he’s gay not too long ago. He ain’t no murderder. He ain’t no liar. He don’t have aids and HELL NO would he ever spread that shit consciously and intentionally. He ain’t done NOTHING to hurt anybody. What he prefers sexually ain’t NONE of my business. Or someone else’s besides him and the one he loves. All I know is that we’ve been through a lot of shit together and I love him regardless.

Mary looks great on the cover of the Advocate.. a lot of talk of her being on the the cover of this GAY Magazine .. I think it is opening up a GOOD can of worms to what people are thinking about homosexuality… Mary has embraced the gay community they are just regular folk who you decide to love or lay down in the bed with is your choice… I think we really should not make such a big deal about it Mary isn’t .. oh and by the way the album is dropping 12/18 rated E for everyone gay, bi, straight, alien, dog or cat.. got it.. get it here (smile)

The black community is not flourishing and it’s a reflection of it’s disdain for order. Many of you “enlightened” sisters will be the first ones to rant, bitch, and complain about the black man when your HIV test comes back positive. In all reality, many sisters are advocates of homosexuality because it represents an aspect of the liberated, empowered black woman and the continued destruction of the role of the black male. While your busy clamoring for open-mindedness, the black community continues to devolve into a cesspool because you can’t stand the thought of a male, heterosexual negro as an authority figure. The way that one can tell that this is true is because the same people that claim that the Bible was written by man will quote the Constitution chapter and verse, lol. I also find it hilarious that the same blacks that ask idiotic, rhetorical questions like “what do YOU think?”, or “why does your god hate?” will be the same house negroes in court with their head bowed to their white judge master awaiting their sentencing with no damn questions asked, lmao.
The majority of these young brothers and sisters that claim to be homosexual or lesbian are just confused because this is a generation of black youth that have no strong black parentage and they will thusly succumb to any and every demon out here (Prov 30:11). It’s amazing how much homosexuality has grown in the black community since the “civil rights movement” (Prov 12:26). The white man’s belief system has rubbed off on blacks in many negative ways. See all these things that have befallen the black community follow a sequential order from blacks despising order (Hosea 4:6). From the incarceration of the black man all the way to the inability of the black woman to maintain a productive relationship (Deut 28:15-68). I don’t understand where acceptance of homosexuality fits in with the improvement of the black community or the family structure and I doubt if the “advocates” of homosexuality could provide any reasoning other than “opening your mind” which is the same thing Satan told Eve (Gen 3:5). The black men that do accept it usually do so, so that they will not offend the black man’s two gods, the white man and the black woman. What’s truly sad is that most of these black people that can conjure up 3 and 4 paragraphs of nonsense questioning Christ’s existence can only manage a “That’s so sad” when a racial incident occurs, proving that everyone is above reproach and a dissertation except for the heterosexual black male.
@43
What “blackplotation crap”, lmao. What is that? Is that what you call a black man speaking his mind, lol? I notice that any and everyone can speak strong except for a black man. You know what sis, at the end of the day, we don’t have to agree. Music is used to sway the minds of the people so if you don’t believe that there is a correlation between the massive crossover promotion of an artist like Mary J. Blige and a certain “strong” (destructive) mindset that they want black women to embrace, then I don’t know what to tell you.
@66
It’s no concern to me whether your affliction is a choice or not. There are pedophiles and rapists that are allegedly compelled by an uncontrollable urge to do what they do, sometimes from birth (Psalms 58:3, Prov 16:4, Rom 9:21-23, etc.). The fact of the matter is that any codified law is concrete and used to subjectify the people. The only room for interpretation is the room purposefully designed by the lawmakers. Rape and pedophilia are against the laws of this land, while homosexuality is not so it’s left up to the cultural mores of mainstream society to establish of their own accord what is taboo and what isn’t taboo. Where man’s “opinion” comes in, is where Satan comes in (Prov 12:15, Prov 16:25, Prov 18:2, Isaiah 5:21, Malachi 3:13-15). Just because the white man allows homosexuals to gallivant around this society does not mean that their actions are not reprehensible. If homosexuality is genetic then “science” has to explain the aspect of getting “turned out”. When you think about it, that’s an indirect way of people acknowledging that the people who draft and pass the laws are gods (Rom 1:25).
@67
Where are your historical facts? Please provide them (I Thes 5:21). I love people that swear up and down that they can provide some edification on the Lord’s Word from “historians” that worship Satan and “historical treatises” with an agenda. No disrespect to many so-called “educated” brothers and sisters but if you knew to what extent our people have been lied to, up to this very day, there would be no doubt who the devil is. The fact of the matter is that you people have no answers whatsoever, this is why you stick to innuendo instead of laying it all on the table. Misery loves company.
@72
Your comment is indicative of the massive confusion of the people who try to mix this world with the scriptures. How can you question Christ’s existence and then go on to act as if you believe in the Bible (I John 2:18-23, I John 4:1-3). I mean honestly, it’s either one or the other (Rev 3:15,16).
@81
Well said. The homosexual has become above reproach in this society, especially amongst certain elements. This is why our people cannot improve, because they refuse to acknowledge their shortcomings.
@87
Stop trying to deflect off of the topic with nonsense and bullshit. If you can’t argue a topic or you’re just desperate to be a shield for homosexuality, then just say so.
It’s just funny to me how this topic went into the pro-homosexual condemnation of the scriptures. It’s obvious to see that the Lord is making that division and it’s beautiful (Luke 12:51). There are no people more fascistic than these new age pseudo-intellectuals that get irate when someone disagrees with the bullshit that they regurgitate from the white man. They just can’t believe that there are still people with values, lol.
