There are certain artists that we all know and love that we can’t wait to get our hands on some new music from. ’06 was a big year for comebacks, with albums from Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Ciara, and more, and we got loads of new music from unexpected artists on ’07, but I think it’s safe to say that ’08 is definitely going to be another year for some of music’s giants to stake their claim and return to their thrones…
JANET JACKSON
♫ Janet Jackson – Feedback
Janet Jackson is back with her 10th studio album, and fans are looking for her to make a huge comeback in ’08 with Discipline. I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t stoked about hearing some new material from Janet, especially with the roster of producers and writers that she has working on the new project. “Feedback” was a great way to announce her return on to the scene, and it’s only a matter of time before we see a video and hear some new material from the album. So get yourself prepared for Miss Jackson’s return!
NAS
Even though no “official” material has leaked, Nas is to release his controversial Nigger LP in none other than the black history month of February. This should be interesting. They’ve done a pretty good job of keeping the material under wraps, considering that the album was supposed to be out this year. Nas has made many plugs about the album on the red carpet, but it’s just crazy that no one in the industry has made any comments about the new material from Nigger. Hopefully, it will shock and suprise, just like the title did.
BRANDY
♫ Brandy feat. Riff Raff – What Have You Done For Me
People are on the look out for a new Brandy album, and I must admit – I am too. I was so in love with the Afrodisiac project, and I think that Brandy is ready to put out some quality. I like that for the past few albums, Brandy has been primarily sticking to a close nit group of producers to create cohesive album that makes absolute since together. Her new project should be very interesting. I wanna see what she’s going to come up with this go ’round.
LETOYA LUCKETT
♫ LeToya Luckett feat. Killa Kyleon, Slim Thug & Bun B. – Swagger
LeToya Luckett surprised everyone with her debut, LeToya. At first, she released a couple of singles and it seemed to be a struggle, and Toya’s folks weren’t striking when the iron was hot. But then, she released the Teddy Bishop-pinned “Torn,” and everyone went wild. This time around, LeToya has been in the studio, working on her sophomore effort, which is set to be released early next year. She’s worked with a team of great producers, including Bryan-Michael Cox, The Dream & Tricky Stewart, The Underdogs, and there are talks of LeToya hitting the studio with Timbaland. Should be interesting from our H-Town chick.
ERYKAH BADU
♫ Erykah Badu – Honey
Erykah Badu, to me, as remained consistent throughout the years. From Baduizm, to Mama’s Gun, to Worldwide Underground, there hasn’t been an Erykah album that I haven’t been able to listen to from top to bottom. “Honey” is the first track from Erykah’s new album, Nu AmErykah, which is set for release February 24th. The double-disc album will include 18 tracks, including “Honey,” produced by 9th Wonder and the follow-up ’70’s soul-inspired single, “Soldier 7.”
TWEET
♫ Tweet – Anymore
My favorite Southern Hummingbird Tweet is dropping a new album in February entitled Love, Tweet. I was super excited about the snippets that leaked from the album, it seems like a mellow, cohesive album, that you can just pop in and play all the way through. I have honestly thought for a while that Tweet was one of the most underrated performers – she is amazing. From her musical compositions on 2003′s Southern Hummingbird, to the eclectic material on It’s Me Again, Tweet hasn’t steered me wrong, and I’m looking for what to what she’ll be doing this time around.
USHER
♫ Usher feat. Ludacris – Dat Girl Right There
There’s been talks that Tameka’s got Usher on the short leash, but I’ll tell you something, this man is coming out with an album in ’08. New marriage, new baby – why not? New album! I actually liked the song “Dat Girl Right There” more than anything else that had leaked from this album, which, according to he and R. Kelly’s “Same Girl” video, was due out in November of this year. But here we are, on the cusp of ’08 with no album, and no real, concrete single. Hopefully, Usher can get from out the shadow of Tameka and get back to his thing.
ASHANTI
Ashanti – Hey Baby (After the Club)
Ashanti is another singer that is coming back in ’08. Her single “Hey Baby (After the Club)” didn’t really cause that much buzz, which prompted someone at the record company to push back her album date to ’08. Her new album, Declaration which is set to be released sometime in February is said to be a mid-tempo record and stay true to Ashanti’s style. She’s still signed to The Inc., and she’s one of their most successful artists. So let’s hope that after the whole Irv Gotti incident, the record will get pushed correctly.
JOHN LEGEND
No new material has leaked from the talented John Legend, but he is working on conceptualizing his new album now. You may remember in the music news round-up, we posted information that John has sought out The Neptunes and friend and collaborator Kanye West for the new album, so it make for some pretty interesting music. His last album, Once Again just recently released a single and video, so I’m pretty sure he’s wrapping up promo on that. Be sure to be on the look out for Mr. Legend in ’08.
MARIAH CAREY
Nothing new leaked yet from Mariah, but apparently, she’s “in love” with the material. We’ve tried to keep you updated on what’s been going on with the project of everyone’s favorite diva, but it’s pretty much been kept under wraps. All that’s really been told to us is that she’s in the studio with Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox again – and they were largely responsible for the huge success that was The Emancipation of Mimi. I’m trying to believe the hype. I’m just hoping that she will release an album that was just as solid as her last comeback.
WHITNEY HOUSTON?
There are talks of a Whitney comeback, but I’m not sure if I buy it yet. I saw the videos, I read the reviews – and people are excited. But something to be just seems unstable about Whitney. Sure, she was a powerhouse – but can she bounce back? I just see a whole Britney Spears thing happening. People think she’s gonna get it together after they hear one song, she starts performing on shows, and people just not respond. But she is a legend, and Whitney will always be one of the greats. So I’m looking forward to hearing from her, if she really is releasing a new album…

Good list! I personally can’t wait for Brandy to drop some new hotness, especially now that it’s been confirmed that she will not be charged for the car incident last year! She always brings the heat, but I’m expecting even bigger things this time around because of everything she’s been through this year. B-Rocka forever!
I’m really pushing for Janet this time too. I don’t want her to flop for a third time. That just ain’t right!

I will definitely NOT be surprised if Beyonce drops another album this year. She has a chokehold on the industry, but with so many females coming for her title in 2008, her team knows they can’t let that grip loose! One day she is gonna HAVE to take a break, but I doubt it’ll be any day soon.
Go back to the drawing board Nas. Shocking album titles (i.e Hip Hop is Dead) arent going to help you sell albums. The music needs to make people wanna invest in you again since you have fallen off.

Anyway, back to more cynical talk (lol) I just wasn’t with everyone on the “Mariah in ’05″ bandwagon. I thought the album was illiterate, superficial garbage…especially in comparison to her other albums. Butterfly is my favorite from her and the songs are in another league…the stuff on “The Emancipation of Mi Mi” can’t even compare…it wasn’t Mariah to me in ’05, at all.. I still think she has the best voice in the world.
LOVE Tweet, I cannot express how much I do but I REFUSE to accept these obvious pop-driven records…they aren’t her…I don’t like them…The one with TI was on the radio a couple of weeks ago…I never expected her to actually release that garbage. I hate this song too and it’s stuff like this…SMH…it’s why I have never heard her last CD…it drove me crazy that Missy was in “Turn the Lights Off” and the remix with 50 Cent literally made me cringe, so I cut off my nose to spite my face and didn’t buy it. She’s soooooo much better than this. Brian, will you dig and see if you can uncover the unreleased “Smoking Cigarettes” video? I know she shot it, I’ve seen the stills…
As for predicitions: Erykah and John will be successful, Mariah will have moderate success, Usher will debut strong but fall away quickly…Whitney, Letoya, Ashanti, Janet, Brandy, Nas, and Tweet (sadly) won’t even get off the ground.

hasn’t Janet been trying to comeback since 2003? I am sorry, but when you have weak vocal skills, you need to fall back. this is not a Mariah Carey who has the talent to back up her comeback. Janet cannot sing that is why she is constantly showing offer her body to distract people. Mariah may show off her body also, but at least she has the vocal ability to shut up her critics. Janet should stick to acting and leave the singing to the real talents. she was able to get away with it when she was younger because people were impressed by her image and videos, but now she looks like she is trying to hard!

Very nice list made up of some great artists…granted I didn’t listen to all of the songs… (Nas and John Legend because I don’t really listen to their music)…but I wasn’t as impressed by the other other artists as much as I hoped I’d be. Letoya song isn’t that bad…I could give it a second listen…and I really enjoy Brandy’s music but this song was just okay for me…didn’t care much for Tweet’s song although I think she has an amazing voice…and as for the others…they were all okay for me as well…but overall I’m willing to give them all a second listen…

Wow some you guys are harsh on my girl B-Rock!…well I think she is going to have a good comeback because Brandy IMO doesn’t fall short on the albums..yes she might not have a gigantic voice..but her bravado and melodic voice is smooth over the music..I have to agree that certain Timbaland beats drowned her voice out.but I think that was one Tim’s best projects since Aaliyah died..he was just doing alot of hip-hop than R&B..but I can’t wait until this album drops sounds like Spicy Creole is going to have some competition!
