Dréa - Buttafly
Meet Dréa. This singer, songwriter, self-taught pianist, guitarist and drummer out of Buffalo (New York) is bound to make some moves in the music industry.
Influenced by Lauryn Hill and Prince as well as the “music politicians” (as she likes to call them) of the 60s and 70s, she has dubbed her music a ‘marriage of political consciousness paired with the raw undertones of intimate reality’.
“Back in the day, you had Bob Marley, Nina Simone and Marvin Gaye speaking for the mute. Their musical contribution to this world is invaluable. I’m going for that same method of staying true to you and saying what needs to be said like only I can say it!”
-Dréa
Although she has a production deal out of LA; she has yet to secure a major album deal. If you like what you hear, make sure you check out her other great songs via myspace and tell her CL sent ya.

This is a fucking hit. I love it. Her voice is raw. I think this is how Alicia Keys wanted to sound on “No One” but fell short.

Alicia keys ain’t fell short to nothing baby! She did exactly what she wanted to do and succeeded at that! Don’t forget “No one” was and still is #1 on many charts”!

Sounds good….unfortunately she’s not cute, therefore, she can forget it (SORRY, REAL TALK)….And i suspect this is why she hasn’t secured a major deal yet. If she sounded like this and looked like Cassie, she would have been signed already. And let’s face it, although our society gives us mixed messages by saying “inner beauty” and “and it’s not what you look like that counts”…um, bullshit…our society is 99% look oriented, and you if you don’t fit the bill, you will foot the bill your damn self.

@ Morena. Yeah it was a hit, but I was talking about Alicia’s voice in the song. She was going for raw, but it was just off key singing.I actually liked her song though. I guess you missed my point.
@ Jscene. I think this Drea chick has a cute look and style.

I respect her as a black woman trying to do something positive and constructive with her life. But as far as the song, it’s really boring. Turned it off after 1:45. Maybe it’s good to the people that are into her “scene” but I feel like a true artist music will appeal to anyone if it’s good. So go figure. I like Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Lela James, Indian Arie, and even Alicia Keys touches a lot into this feel of music. I’m just not feeling her (Drea’). Her vocals are anything worth… well… idk
Good luck to her anyway.

what is a 'true artist"
Monday, December 17, 2007 /
Here come the critics with their generalizing statments? A True Artist? What exactly is that?
I think this song is nice. I do listen to Bob & Peter so I guess that why I feel it. Good pick though. I was sick of those lame acts getting shine.

i like it its good PERFECT to put on after a long day and you want to relax.
its true that looks are important in the business but they aren’t the be all end all, if we decide NOT to accept you have to look like model to be successful and start ACCEPTING people who look different and sound different as they are the most interesting people. then we can get back to the times where music was about music not about wearing the smallest pieve of strategically laced fabric while doing crotch dances. amen.

Agree with Jscene
I don’t thik the girl is ugly but dhe doesn’t have the typical hollywood glamour that would help her succeed in this business but I hope the girl would do well in this indusrty even though it is a struggle.
@ 14
I agree too people have their own subjective opinions on what a true artist and it gets annoying because not everyone is going to agree that neo-soul acts are “true” artist

Drea your voice is beautiful…You ARE pretty and your style is unique but….I don’t live in Buffalo anymore my husband is a professional athlete and we moved from there. Thank God… Word of advice get the hellout of that broke down Buffalo. Please move to LA so you can get some recognition. Yes, it is a sacrifice, but Buffalo has nothing to offer any African American striving to do something positive. The city is depressing and virtually broke.Broke only attracts broke people. You need to surround yourself with artist that know someone …a network of people that have money and is in the business. For example cities like LA, NYC, and Atlanta they have a network of people that can get you a good start. Get you some professional pictures taken with a decent wardrobe no tee shirts, no kinky twist hairdo, or jeans. Step up your appearance with your voice. Your voice is crisp and polished. So a listener would imagine the same a crisp polished looking sister. I promise you if you do these things you WILL go far. I miss Boccee’s Pizza and Scotties Steak and the Elmwood strip. God Bless I’ll be looking out for ya!

I said it, I stick by it, it’s my story and i’m sticking to it….sorry, didn’t mean to sting anyone
Cassie isn’t here today, gone tomorrow, Cassie has a cd coming out, and why, cause she’s pleasing to the eyes, which means, she’ll move cds……she appeals to the masses and shallow people just like to look at something cute…and that’s why even though some feel she’s “talent challenged” she has labels still willing to throw money at her absence of a clearly defined articulated “talent”…it is what it is…i didn’t make the rules, please don’t shoot the messenger. Just goes to show you how far people are willing to go for some in the industry because of their appearance. The girl looks great in videos and on camera.
I would always encourage a person to stick to their guns, and do what feels right to them….however, i’m also a realist, and i was just offering a reason why i felt drea has so much talent, yet haven’t signed a major deal as of yet…..They chase the Cassie’s of our time, and the Drea’s have to chase the labels…..
And someone said “make the industry come to you.” Umm, you gone be eating pork and beans out a can outside a tent with a stick and rock fire going if you follow this notion…..i have never ever seen the industry bend toward the artist, ever…the artist either has to bend with industry and grow with “it” or it’s a wrap…..

Ms Aka go check out Dreas myspace she has Very nice Pic, and last time i checked Drea was living in N.J. better yet Go to You tube and check her out on ABC World News!!! im sure they dont record there segments in Buffalo.
JSCENE just because you have a record coming out doesnt mean your doing good, In Cassies case it means Puffy is mad that her last album FLOPPED and he wants to make his money back, You know the money he spent on making that sexy Image that Bling bling look, that hootie girl glamor life that didnt last very long for her….JSCENE you must understand that no one is selling records except for a few people, so that means If you want to make money you have to Tour and if you want to tour youhave to have a Hell of a live show…i repeat A LIVE SHOW like a band back ground singer and a lead singer who can blow…..lela James sold about 50,000 records but she is constantly on the road getting about 3-5 thousand a show all year round, Mean while Cassie is lip singing on MTV….i cant remeber the last live show i seen with cassie…..so your wrong about that….but good try
Drea will be a Hit and thats the buttom line!!!!!!!!!!

This “singer and player of instruments” has the person of a vessel that is used by the almighty. We should pray that God blesses the words of her mouth and the meditations of her heart to stay clean ,powerful, and heard. In America we should hunger and thirst for more black people to speak words of power to our fragile communities. I support The Singers and players of instruments who sing redemption songs for the rising of our mind, body and spirit.

As i sit here and read some of the comment on your site Drea it just proves to me they are hates on ignorant levels. They can’t understand/comprehend soul music.
so I would like to make it simple in this definition.
SOUL MUSIC: MUSIC THAT SURPASSES THE OUTER EAR, THE BUMP AND GRIND, THE CRUNK. IT PENETRATES THROUGH THE WALLS OF THE FLESH AND TALKS TO THE SOUL. IT MAKES A CONNECTION WITH THE INDIVIDUAL WHO IS LISTINING. IT CAN CONJURE UP MEMORIES, OR MAKE ONE FACE THE TRUTH IN OWN REALITY. IT CAN MAKE A PERSON SAY THAT THEY ARE SORRY, OR THAT THEY LOVE YOU OR FACE THE TRUTH AND SAY THAT THEY HATE YOU. SOUL MUSIC IS BEYOND THE PHYSICAL IT IS SPIRITUAL AND FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON’T UNDERSTAND EITHER YOUR SOUL IS SLEEPING OR YOU ARE SPIRITUAL DEAD OR YOUR EARS ARE FILLED WITH THE MUSIC THAT PROMOTES SEX, DRUGS AND VIOLENCE.
WAKE UP AND START LISITING TO THE SOUL.

I do like the song.I’ve been a fan of Drea’ for many years ,and what you will notice is that every one of her songs has meaning/depth. I would have to agree that her sound is different .If you listened to the radio for more than an hour you would realize that different is what’s needed.
Be blessed Drea’
