I like the idea of a guy accessorizing in a masculine way. This could totally be an upgrade for some guys that wear the same old thing day in and day out…the basic polo and jean/slack combo. I think that it’s time that guys get something new to add to their wardrobes and everyday attire and the fact that it’s simple yet noticiable makes it even better.

I think that this “swag” thing is going a little too far, especially since most of these rappers have been turned out, so why should they be seen as paragons of fashion for men? How come when Da Brat has on jeans 5 sizes too big; an oversized white tee, with timberland boots unlaced, she isn’t a “swag” icon for females, lol? I just find it entertaining how much men, especially black men, are encouraged to embrace their “feminine side” by the mainstream and a sizable amount of black women. I think there’s a difference between “trends” that emerge as a result of high-end designs (because high-end collections dictate the styles and sorts of clothing available in low-end stores) AND “trends” that emerge as a result of someone interpreting the former sort. For instance, gray is a trend this season and ankle booties and tuxedo jackets and appliques and bulky sweaters and knits and bucket hats and swing jackets and voluminous skirts…ahhhhh soooo much more…and all these are trends because they reflect the entirety of designer collections for the season. They are trends in availability and sort, then. They are NOT, however, trends in that they reflect the way…say..Patricia Field might have assembled a sweater with knee socks and booties for the “Carrie Bradshaw” character. That’s the difference from where I’m sitting… You can interpret all these things available to you in different ways. There is no reason you should pretend a certain individual’s interpretation of all these items is a “trend” because we all know that another person is not likely to choose exactly from a sea of infinite possibilities…
And, of all the things you listed, the button-down and sneaker trend is the only one that qualifies as a “trend” in the sense that someone wore it, everybody liked it, and emulated him…and that is what I don’t like (especially since it was contrived image from Jay Z’s female stylist for his transition to “businessman”). The rest are merely what were available in stores…

Let me say this and I’m done (because I really don’t care…this topic was just near the top) I AM NOT a small-minded person…I SUBSCRIBE TO NONE OF THOSE ‘THUG/HOOD’ NOTIONS OF HOW A BLACK MAN SHOULD LOOK/DRESS. And, I should have been careful in my initial post…it was just that I was flippantly posting because it was a new topic.
ANYWAY, while I don’t buy into absurd generalizations, I also WOULD NEVER date anyone UNLESS her were an individual and that means even in dress… I WOULD NEVER date a guy wearing an entire outfit he saw on TV: in a video, in a movie, or otherwise… NO (thank goodness the guys I date would never EVER indulge even the notion of some uniform of extraordinariness or something, though…).
But, again…YES it was interesting, Kanye’s interpretation BUT NO IT IS NOT interesting (and NO IT IS NOT ATTRACTIVE) everyone’s basically wearing Kanye’s thought (just as it was NOT hot when everyone wore the button down with sneakers, Jay Z’s stylist’s thought).
Ultimately, though, my initial point was NOT that a scarf is gay BUT ONLY that wearing another person’s brain is lame!

It’s not the scarf, but the entire look…as I said we’ve seen it in rap videos for years…Andre 3000 and Common have been wearing scarves in videos for years…neither of their styles is reminiscent of Kanye’s. Because the man’s done a very peculiar thing, combining things that many believe diametrically opposed…Even Pharrel hasn’t combined them in the same way… Kanye’s look is at once bohemian, street, and high-fashion. The most Pharrel ever did was combine high-fashion and street…never bohemian. Will.I.Am didn’t even combine all three elements.
The point is, ultimately, NO TWO people will choose alike in a sea of possibilities.

As for me, I’m more inner-directed in dress..sure, I have things that other people I know own because, as I said, designers dictate what will be sold in stores and shops from Neiman Marcus to KMart and I am not rich, I don’t buy couture (I design accessories, though). BUT it is my own interpretation of these things that makes my style my own. I’m into timeless pieces too…solids, muted colors, cotton tops and dresses, tube skirts, and of course vintage items… But, ultimately, I believe we all know the otherness of our ideas…we’re all responsible for our own individuation…and we know when we’re being celluloid.
