FASHION PICKS: SCARF SWAG
Tuesday, December 18, 2007

Guys are stepping up their accessories game and rocking scarves hard this season. This trend is pretty evident if you look at all males in entertainment - Kanye of course (who started the trend on the black carpet), Omarion, Lupe Fiasco, and Jay-Z are some of the guys who like to add a scarf to their look.
I noticed some time ago when David Beckham showed his scarf swag, letting folks know that this trend isn’t all for the ladies. I think the look is a go and shows that guys can be a little versatile with their wardrobe.

Here are a few I found online, mostly at ASOS and Urban Outfitters. They have some of the basic patterns and skull scarves you may see a lot of. If you’re the alpha male that wants to step it up with some designer scarves, visit fruition for some vintage, yet hot Gucci, Chanel, and YSL wrappers.

Are scarves really the fashion or are these dudes just cold?
I’m just saying. This doesn’t seem all that fashionable to me. It’s just practical.

This look is actually an old look…the underground crowd - especially Asians - have been doing the scarf swag for awhile now. Do I like it…I can deal with it as long as it is around the neck and not the mouth…as I’ve seen in the past. It’s funny how everything underground finds its way to the surface.

Real Talk Cl…I won’t profess to being ANYWHERE near a Cornell West or a Tavis Smiley, but I’m lightyears ahead of any brotha, one would hear as the brotha who F’ed up.We are less than two weeks from the election year, and in your political section you have almost no current post.I give you mad props for even having one in the first place, and I’ll admit that I was slippin’ on that section, but MIGHTY WHITEY made me wanna Holla,DRINK A BIG AZZ CUP OF SHUTTT THA FUCK UP!!!!!!!! This cave boy that was somewhat cooler than your typical caveboy, wanted to put me on blast about something that went down between John Edwards and some old cave boy in Iowa, talking s__t about the OJ TRAIL,REV.AL&Jess and some kind of f’ed up correlation with Brotha Obama running for office, and I’m like WHAT!!!!! Bet is no real source of Black Information, and Brotha Tavis is sooooooo limited on PBS in so far as what he can say and still maintain a check…..Cl you reach millions ,provide your core with the means to sway that Cave Boy in Iowa into SUPPORTING Brotha O,not puttin’ you on blast, but your core can handle MORE PERTINENT INFOMATION,I’ m just sayin’

…
finally
no lace-front discussion
i personally wouldn’t wear a scarf
only because it don’t go with my look
some people can make it work
i just happen to not be one of those people
which i think is the reason a lot of the
men on here are calling the look gay

This scarf thing started with nomadic Arabs. They needed something to use to protect their faces from sand storms.
It’s cool though

Who said Kanye was the first to wear scarves? I didn’t.
I said Kanye was the first to wear this look: street, boho, high-end…that’s what I said. Pharell’s look was high-end and street (or irreverent and sporty) not hipster. Kanye was the first to blend the two looks with the vintage inspired outerwear…the hipster jackets and cardigans…and, of course, the sunglasses.

Okay, I’m never typing the word K-A-N-Y-E again! lol I’m so tired of talking about that man and his look… I promise I hardly care…he’s not on my best dressed list. In fact, I can clearly trace his influences…though that in no way negates the fact that he was the first to wear all the stuff at once.

FIRST OF ALL this trend is not new. For those fashionable people out there, the scarf/shemagh has been a staple item for about a year now. It is only until recently that celebrities have been rocking this look. SECOND OF ALL, i just want to say that i am very dissapointed with black people on this blog. Reading some of the comments about the “look” being gay just annoyed and angered me. BASICALLY in order for a black man to be considered a black man he needs to have his pants down to his knees and mean mugging all the time. Sorry been there done that. It’s time for us to experience new things and become bigger than what we’ve been before.

Naw man what’s GAY is wearin’ pink furs carrying a baby phat cell phone or the homo thug jim jones draw attention to my ass with this chain on my waist tight ass hip hugger jeans! Whew! Most dudes say something is gay when they can’t afford it or they don’t have any fashion sense BTW what’s so great about extra oversized jeans and smelling like blunts all day? At least these dudes can get a job @ a clothing store ya’ll homo thugs just holding up the block SMH that’s why haters never prosper. If u don’t like it don’t wear it but don’t hate on the next man cause MJ used to rock one glove and these same hard core thugs know they had some glitter socks LOL!

its a insult to muslims(lupe fiasco was born/is muslim)
Men died fighting in a war for that. Arafat wore it. People took bullets in the back fighting for that! [Rappers] don’t know what the meaning of that is.. they’re ignorant! They go overseas and they go to Dubai then they come back and say, ‘look at the new trend I started’. It’s disrespectful!”
The Muslim man I spoke with thinks rappers need a little sensitivity training, “If I see them wearing the jalabia, I’ll make them take it off!

I can tell a lot of cyber-black folk don’t care about fashion…at least CL patrons…because people are forever calling Brian on this and that in his music posts but people rarely ever (with the exception of the occasional UK blogger) call Tianna on these fashion posts. Boyyy…ya’ll are forever late with these, CL.

I think that my husband Omarion looks sexy in his scarf. I can see him with a scarf any day even if he has to wrap the scarf around me, I would love it. I love you so much Omarion baby, don’t listen to what others say about you, you are always mine and are always sexy in my eyes. Love your wife, Lisa

When I first saw the scarf swag I thought “hmm.. that’s different”, then it caught on like wildfire. Everyone’s wearing them now. I personally don’t see this look as being gay or homo (double pause and double no homo, I know.. I listen to too much dipset but still…). It’s just fashion and fashion is constantly evolving. I bought one a month ago and have yet to wear it, it’s basic and solid in color and I like it for me. I think the problem is that if you don’t dress “hood” then people automatically think something’s wrong and that mentality is stupid, people need to wake up realize the world is bigger than than the hood and the block. I laugh at all those bum ass basic dudes who think a pair of gore-tex boots and a Ed Hardy hoddie is their idea of getting fly. LMAO!!……
Neutral 550 set, Brick City 973 all the way to the UK and back. peace

Scarfs on urban fashion is not new. I honestly think trends itself is corny, and you should originate, and not imitate. However, there is no such thing as “originality”, as everyone subconsciously copies from one another.
