JAY-Z RESIGNS FROM DEF JAM
Monday, December 24, 2007

Looks like Jigga is officially done at Def Jam. It was announced today that starting January 1st, he will no longer serve at the label President:
“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have served as President of such a culturally-defining label as Def Jam over the last three years,” Jay-Z said in a statement. “During that time, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many of the world’s most dynamic artists and many of the most dedicated and talented executives in the music business today, including Antonio “L.A.” Reid. But now it’s time for me to take on new challenges.”
Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, took over as President of Def Jam in 2005. Under his guidance, the rapper signed his former rival Nas to Def Jam and oversaw the release of hit records by Kanye West, Rihanna and Ne-Yo.
Island Def Jam Music Group Chairman Antonio “L.A.” Reid said that Jay-Z felt it was time to take on “different challenges in his life.”
Jay-Z will continue running and recording for his Roc-A-Fella imprint, which is distributed by the Island Def Jam Music Group. The mogul is rumored to be making a transition to the urban division of Sony Records with Rick Rubin. Full article
Meanwhile, keep checking in to see photos of Jay Z when he opens his new 40/40 club in Vegas on New Years Eve, with Beyonce.

You know, i didn’t want to speculate, but i have a feeling there’s more to why he quit that job. More than just him wanting to have a real impact on the way the business operates, more than the paycheck, more than him having already made history by being the first rapper to ascend that high…i think he has personal shit planned for the majority of the year that would have suffered if he were needed in an office for a 9 to 5. I think he might have reasons to want a lot of the next year ‘off’. Not just for the AG Tour he wants to do, but to enjoy life and be with family. Take steps to do different things. I don’t think leaving Def Jam was a hard decision for him to make. I think he liked the job, sure, but at the end of the day? After 3 years in? And at 38? I think there’s something else he wants out of life entirely. And now he has the free time to do it. One more record to go. One more tour. Then he can go turn into what it is he really wants to be. 6 letter word, starts with an “F”.
I dig it.
I don’t think it has to do with people tripping on his job performance. I don’t even think he was unhappy with the job. I think he felt he’s made an impact and done as much as he was given the room to do at Def Jam.
Truthfully? I think he’s setting himself up so that he can devote major time to his family. I think a lot of the next year will be spent building that foundation. He’s got his brand safely anchored: Rocawear ain’t goin nowhere, nor is the 40/40 franchise. He’s set. Money rolls in regardless. He’s respected. He’s revered. I think the next logical progression is for the man that’s extremely happy professionally….to be happy personally. On a family level. You can’t get those years back. You have to take advantage of them. Spending time with the ones who love you. that means ALL of the ones who love you, not just the ones with inked up fingers.

Good, skip rocks bitch! You werent doing anything put promoting your own ass as LL put it….He used that label to “up” himself….and Rhi and Neyo, but i have my suspicions why…won’t go into that now. There’s no way Def Jam can justify paying you what they were paying you, with all them fucked up cd’s you were putting out…you got too comfortable being “jayz” that you were slipping bad…I for one have not been impressed with his “commercialism” since taking the position as president. The label used up so much money promoting your bullshit cd that did very “mediocre” for jayz, or anyone in his realm…..
I for one am glad, and i hope whoever takes the seat thinks about all the artists signed to the label and give everyone equal shine, and i hope they are not as self serving as you were.
Now go take advantage of sony until they tire of your fake ass and realize you are a self serving fraud, and boot your ass. Good luck being dominating and self serving in your next venture….i doubt if you need the luck doing so though you’ve gotten so good at it.

And for those that dont know Rick Rubin has been in the game since day one literally. He started Def Jam w/Russell Simmons back in the day. So for Jay to be making moves with him…….how could that not be anything less then genius!

He did not do much for the company anyway. And please believe this choice was not all his. They most likely told him people who were investing in the company were not satisfied with the job he was doing. Stick to what you are good at Jay because it is not being a President. Good job on trying to conquer new aspects of the business but some people are just not made to play every position.

I am personally glad he left and is moving on to bigger and better things. He gave that company FREE publicity and all they did was disrespect him. now that he’s resigned, every hip hop artist on that label should be pushing triple plat since they blame him and nobody else for their troubles. let’s see who they decide to attack now.
also to note name a more successful urban label in the last 3 years since Jay Z has been president, none. not only did the label get 26 grammy nods, but their sells collectively have been the best this year than any other urban label. ppl can hate on the man all u want but u are wasting time

Also it is interesting in seeing is if Def Jam paid him to let Rhianna, Ne-Yo, Rick Ross, and Chrisette Michelle stay. If you remember, when he signed to President of Def Jam he contract stated that any artists that he has influence in signing he keeps and takes with him when he leaves. So this will be VERY INTERESTING…given the fact that those are Def Jam’s heavy hitters with the exception of Jay and Kanye (but their signed to Roc-A-Fella).
Also what would be interesting is see the next bricks that are thrown up from traditional artist on D.J. such as LL, Meth, and Redman. Anyone remember their last albums PRE-JAY being President.?………………………………………………………………………… Exactly!!! I mean, I love MEth and Red…but didnt really have a banger THAT SOLD since Doc 2000 and Meth and had a strong album THAT SOLD since his first joint. But hey maybe they will come out the gate with WONDERFUL PROMO and GO PLATINUM…… ::dumbfounded face::: Yea..ok….
Jay Z has gave Def Jam so much free publicity and made it the most successful urban label since he has been prez

You cowardly negro, you talkin to me? Boy if it wasn’t Christmas i would blast your ass! Your stan ass always talk stupid when it comes to jayz; you have absolutely no objectivity when it comes to him, you are so far up jayz ass, tell me, how many teeth he got, start counting from the back of his mouth, right where your head is at.
LL was right on to blame Def Jam for not MARKETING his last cd; the public, not the label should decide what’s trash, and how can we decide, when they pick and choose who get’s promoted and who don’t, and I’M WILLING TO BET YOU’RE SPEAKING ON LL’S CD, BUT YOUR STAN ASS PROBABLY NEVER HEARD THE CD….bottom line is, under jayz’s reign, some were heavily promoted and some were sort of promoted, and some weren’t promoted at all….i mean damn, i didn’t even know LL had a cd out, until he complained of it not being promoted…so the public didn’t decide it wasn’t a good HIP HOP cd, how could we if we don’t hear the songs dummie?……..LL is a HIP HOP King, a legend, and he deserved more respect than that….bottom line is, jayz won’t promote those who he competes with….Kanye promoted his damn self, thank you….He and 50, as juvenile as it might have seemed, came up with a brilliant plan of a competition; they are not real enemies, but this was a marketing stragedy to worked out really well. Jayz is a jealous ass bitch, and i believe he was jealous of Ye, and Kanye looks up to him so much, it’s hard to keep hating someone that loves you….Kanye is wayyyyyy more creative than jayz, with his thieving ass, stealing lyrics behind, can ever take credit for.
Funny how jayz, even though he wasn’t allowed to play the main character in American Gangster, nor do the “official” soundtrack for the movie, still promoted his self along with the movie, claiming to be “inspired by the film”, cause he knew the movie would hit big, naming his cd after the damn movie (this was clear promotional scheme by him that did not pan out)…..they let him do it cause he was so bummed they choose denzel over him to play the character, that they let his ass get away with that shit, but had that been anyone else, they would have still been in court on that shit right now.
Bottom line, jayz has been slipping for a while…his work is mediocre…sure some like it, his core fans, and good and fine….but even the label expressed their dislike for the album and demanded he go back to the table with it, scrap it, and start again.
Please, jayz was just defeated with this cd, and he doesn’t accept defeat well…..def jam was unhappy with him, people were laid off, cause they did not recoup the monies to promote that cd……
I’m not sorry to see jayz go at all…….

JayZ has just recently invested money in luxury chain hotels. Excellent move. When your protege is a billionaire like Bob Johnson, you’re going to imitate who you keep close company with. I aint mad at their hustle. I think JayZ is realizing he’s getting old and is planning to retire for real with Beyonce and start the family with her. If you think about it, Bey has tons of endorsements and did the world tour all for a reason. She probably will retire too by the time she’s 30.

@33 u are nothing more than the average Jay Z hater spewing your opinions as facts, attacking his character as if u know him personally. You are not saying anything more than “I dont like Jay Z” “I think he is jealous of whoever”, “he is scum”, “he can not rap”, blah blah. There has not been one thing you have stated that was the truth all rumors and your opinion. The facts are under Jay Z reign Def Jam became the most successful urban label, that got 26 grammy nods this year, and he (Jay Z) has just released (AG) which was overwhelmingly liked and supported by real critics.
The point is Jay Z has left Def Jam in a way better position than what he inherited from it 3 years ago.

I think he wants to do the family thing. Him and Beyonce are becoming more and more public, and even though she is supposed to be coming out with an album by summer, I don’ think that is her main focus. I imagine she’s tired after tour, album promo, endorsements, etc non stop. They aren’t working themselves into the ground like Mariah did, but they probaly are ready for things outside of entertainment.
As for people blaming sales of LL, Method Man, etc on Jay, they weren’t selling before he was there. You can’t put out millions on someone who is barely making you profit, especially when record sales are so unpredictable. If no one has noticed, you can count on 1 hand the hip hop artist who consistanly go multi platinum (Kanye, 50, Jay , Ludacris), but even theie last projects are below their usual #s.

And you are nothing more than a mindless, brainless ass kisser; that nigga was not doing shit but promoting himself, his jumpoff, and i don’t want to say about neyo…if you don’t like my OPINION, then you could keep it moving…i never stated them as facts anyway, anything said on here, unless you are jayz himself or a rep from Def Jam, is a fuckin opinion, including what you had to say, and including whether or not he left Def Jam in a better place….that bitch was getting ready to be fired, resignation is what people do when they are not living up to the hype and it’s a way to save face before the company fires your ass.
and you said his cd was “overwhelming liked”, overwhelming liked is what alicia’s cd is, overwhelmingly liked is selling millions in a short period of time……
i’m not surprised some people wrote “good things” about his cd, that’s cause he’s jayz, and he has ass kisser, go figure……who have no objectivity, imagine that……
I dont hear anyone stark raving about that cd, and when i heard it, i heard mediocrity at it’s best. Get real, this nigga been falling short and costing def jam tons of money, first of all his pay, for which he does absolutely nothing for but yell “it’s hov” on a track, and secondly, the cost he uses to promote himself and his cds……it’s just not panning out….the cost to keep him is wayyy more than def jam NOW REALIZES he is worth…people are good at many things, some are good at most things, but rarely is a person good at everything……jayz falls short, and he fell short with def jam in my opinion for many reasons, it’s my opinion, deal with it.
The bottom line is, you have YOUR OPINION, and i have mine…..skip your happy ass back to the pallet you’ve made for yourself, where you kneal down to kiss jayz’s ass…i refuse to give him credit where there is none due. I give him much credit for rocawear, and anywhere else I FEEL he’s successful in…..but with Def Jam, he’s get a “hell no.”

I believe it’s true that JayZ was about to be fired or “laid -off” by Def Jam, so resigning was a better look.
At Def Jam, I really did not see any of the other rapper artists promoted like JayZ’s CD’s. Just like P-Diddy, JayZ appeared to promote himself mostly, and then his pop artists- basically the younger artists who appealed to the younger audience.
JayZ knows his days are numbered in cranking out raps because he’s old. People arent interested in his stuff as much anymore. Do you know of any rappers in their 40’s who are a real hit these days? The other older rap artists appeared to have been ignored- no promos for their CDs. He obviously hogged all the rap sales for himself, and when things did not pan out, heads went to rolling- people lost their jobs because of it. It’s a shame, because JayZ still left with millions (he aint hurting), while the other people left with nothing but memories.
People need to realize that you can bust your butt and make all the money in the world, but when you die, you can not take any of it with you. People need to learn to enjoy the simpler things in life and stay in touch with God.

I so agree. I can’t believe so few people agree with you… It’s the ageold “resign with integrity” thing rather than being “let go.” Business…they do this all the time…they even go as far as giving celebrations and banquets for individuals they KNOW they’re pushing out. I can’t believe so many of you didn’t think that, immediately, when you read this. I did.
Anyway, he probably will go to another company but like his stint with Def Jam it will be a capitalistic move by the co…Sony will bring him in because he is, himself, ceaseless promotion: the #1 rapper working at your label. And…there’s other stuff..why people would tend toward the artists and projects he heads…don’t feel like spelling it out…but my point is, ultimately, that he was probably pushed out…maybe Sony is in a better position or willing to take the risk for a bit of the publicity that comes with offering Jay Z a job. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he seems so vocal and proactive about voicing his blueprints for future campaigns, lately. He’s trying to persuade you that nobody ever lost faith in him.

Jayz needs to realize that he cant be “a jack of all trades”. He has so many businesses- he can not do it all. Something will go lacking. The recent modest record sales for Jayz I’m sure was a cold slap in the face and a reality check- his material aint banging anymore- it’s time to pass the torch and do something else. We all face the same eventuality- we will all get old.
What’s hot today, can become yesterdays news real quick. He should be grateful for having a successful 16 year rap career and call it quits before he starts to embarrass himself and look like a real fool as his record sales steadily hit all time lows. Let it go before it’s too late J.

I cant sleep so I’m blogging til I wear myself out. But #57, I agree with you. Sunshine Anderson, (she made Heard it All Before”) released a CD last year, but you’d never know because she was not promoted at all. It’s seems like all the other artists on the label with Beyonce just dont stand a chance because the record label has seemingly poured all its interests into Beyonce. Is she beautiful and talented? Yes she is, but the other artists are too, and some them even better.
When your’e up against an artist whose Daddy, husband (JayZ), and record execs are behind you only and want to see you shine only (due to how much revenue you’re bringing into their pockets), the other artists might as well forget about it- they will never get a fair shot until either Bey leaves or they leave. If I were those other artists, I would try to grab at those endorsements Bey has been getting and be aggressive like a pit bull to get what I want.

Some of yall keep saying he was a bad CEO how. Name a urban label that put up better numbers than Def Jam this year and since he has been president, there has been none. As president of Def Jam the record label got 26 grammy nods. And as I stated before artist on the label like Rhianna, Ne-Yo, Rick Ross, Nas, Young Jezzy, and Chrisette Michelle if he let them stay Def Jam paid him to let them stay. If you remember, when he signed to President of Def Jam he contract stated that any artists that he has influence in signing he keeps and takes with him when he leaves.
Another thing that nobody realizes is it didnt matter if jay-z was on def jam or not, LA Reid was/is the one that distributes the money to the def jam artists.. jay-z didnt get promotion from def jam, all the promotion for ‘kingdom come’ and ‘american gangster’ were mostly from outside sources (sponsorhips from other companies, like Budwiser, Ace of Spades, Coke, etc). now that jay-z isnt there anymore, who do the rappers have 2 blame 4 STILL not gettin any promotion from the label?
I think ppl are quick to target him because he’s best known as a rapper. Also, ppl didn’t think he was ready for that level of executive responsibility going from being head of an imprint label (Rocafella) to a major. If you disregard those preconceptions and consider the industry slump you will see that he did quite well overall.
But some of you all it is no reasoning with and just have a personal vendetta against him.

@MEKA,
U JUST PREACHED THE GOSPEL. THERE IS NO OTHER URBAN LABEL THAT HAS THE AMOUNT OF RECOGNITION THAN DEF JAM. LOOK AT BAD BOY WID DIDDY, NOTHIN AINT HAPPENIN THERE- CASSIE FLOPPED, DANITY KANE STRUGGLIN ETC. JAYZ GIVE DEF JAM RECOGNITION.
JAYZ TOOK DEF JAM UNDER WINGS AND IT FLOURISHED. 26 GRAMMY NODS AND RIHANNA’S HAS NOMINATION IN THE BIG CATS SUCH AS SONG OF THE YEAR AND RECORD OF THE YEAR. HERE IS WAT HE SAID ABOUT RIHANNA,
Interviewer: So, 26 Grammy nominations; that’s not too shabby. Were you surprised?
Jay-z: Yes, I was. But we definitely put the work in and it’s great to be recognized for it. And … nominations for song and record of the year were fantastic. Rihanna came out of the gate with huge records; our whole thing was to make sure she didn’t get buried under those records and become the “‘Pon De Replay” girl. So to see her come full circle and get her Grammy nods was an incredibly rewarding feeling.
I HOPE JAYZ TAKES RIHANNA AND NEYO WITH HIM CAUSE THEY ARE THE MAINSTREAM ARTISTS ON THAT LABEL ALONG WID KANYE.

It is totally insane for anyone on here to comment on Jay Z’s business acumen. Nobody on here has been to any Def Jam meetings, nobody on here hangs out with Jay Z, nobody on here works at Def Jam. We are all fans. Now if you don’t like the guys music then fine. Myself personally believes that Kingdom Come and American Gangster were two excellent CDs. If you didn’t like KC, you are probably 18 or under. If you didn’t like AG, you probably don’t respect lyricism in music. You probably do the Superman when you go out. Nothing wrong with any of that, just saying that we all have different tastes. With that said, I could care less about what type of job Jay did at Def Jam. Was he responsible for good music being put out? Yes! I have not bought a Meth or LL CD in years; years before Jay got that job andf I like those guys. They just no longer to quality work. People say Jay is “selfish”; what do you think LL is? Yes, he is a legend, but so? As for Meth, he just can’t put out a quality solo album. He does well with collabos, but his solo work is not that good. Please all, be fans and stop trying to be Hip Hop businessmen unless you really are Hip Hop businessmen. It makes you look like a hater otherwise.

@81,
What you said made a lot of sense. If JayZ’s contract was about to be up, what would be the need for him to resign? Resign from what if his contract was going to end anyway? Like I said before, resigning looks better than being fired or not getting your contract renewed. If TUPAC and BIGGIE were still around, they would make JayZ’s rap “fade to black” because those guys work were phenomenal and left a permanent mark on rap forever. GOne but not forgotten RIP TUpac and Biggie!

People see what they want to see, and hear what they want to hear… at no time has he said he is resigning. His statement simply says he is grateful for the opportunity to serve as Def Jam CEO and now it’s time to move on. Since his contract was up, he would have simply not been renewed — but who expected him to go beyond the contract?
The whole “figurehead” CEO position he held was part of his whole Roc a Fella deal when he divested from Dame and Biggs. Def Jam wanted to Roc a Fella and Jay-Z, he was smart enough to use that leverage to get the title and power - I don’t believe he ever had aspirations to be running somebody’s music business - but he is a hustler by nature and he has learned and mastered the hustle game on a whole new level.
In the past three years because of his CEO title, he has been running in a whole new set of circles. He is on to bigger, better and different business deals. Though people continue to say his music has fallen off, it really hasn’t, it’s just different, he is no longer rapping to eat. It’s not realistic to expect him to be rapping like he was 5, 10 years ago - music has changed, he has changed.
Sorry, but you can’t pen Method Man or LL’s fall on him or his marketing skills - they have been in the game too long. If they had a sincere fan base, they wouldn’t need marketing, good music never does. The fact that 3 artists under his reign have blown out the business suggest that he was doing something right- Ne-Yo, Kanye and Rhianna —
Love him or Hate him… the brother is doing big things.

Sounds like his contract wasn’t renewed. LA and them knew he wasn’t worth the cake - at least they had the decency to let him save face with that “steps down” line before showing him the door.
As for Jay’s job in the corner office…meh. He basically did what any other exec at any other label would do; push the safe/easy to sell acts (Jeezy, Rick Ross, Riahanna) and let more challenging acts (The Roots, Freeway, Peedi Crack, Joe Budden etc) sit on the shelf or flop.

I remenber reading this….
“Here we go again…Snitches are buzzing about Jay-Z getting dropped from Def Jam! Word is contract-renewal negotiations between Universal Music and the rapper-turned-CEO have broken down, all because of Hov’s diva-like demands and the bosses because bosses (includid LA Reid) are sick of it.
“He wanted big, big money that was way out of sync with the realities of today’s record business,” a source says.
People have lost count of how many times he’s come out of retirement,” the source says. “Everybody knows he’s not around the office much. Everybody at Universal loves him, but they can’t justify paying him the money he wants when so many people have been laid off.” Source
Anywhoo, his contract is up at the end of month…while in Paris, Hov’s mouthpiece claims the rumors are false and the negotiations will continue. GRAND OPENING, GRAND CLOSING!”
All has come to pass.

All of ya’ll can sit around and give him props and commend him on his “accomplishment” but I see JayZ in a whole new light. The more I pay attention to these fools the more I realize they could careless about others trying to make it even when they’ve reached a status like your Russell Simmons and your Jay-Z’s! He is selfish and a little immature if you ask me. That man knew it was time to go. People were complaining abound for quite sometime. No matter if Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface, and others that were more popular back in the 90’s more so than now have been complaining about him for the simple fact Jay is worried more about him and his boy Kanye than anyone else. He says Kanye West, Rihanna, Neyo they sell records and the others aren’t as popular. Well shit if you are constantly being forced to listen to music that people know full damn well half these fools have no talent what do you expect to happen? But seriously that brother doesn’t want to stop rapping and he’s not trying to put out and promote people who are just as good lyrically as he is.

Wow, people are really hating on Jay’s performance over at Def Jam….I mean what labels have really been selling millions and millions of records??? CD sales aren’t what they used to be and it’s important to believe in a project to promote it well….when I think of Def Jam I think of Jay-Z, Rihanna and Ne-yo and not because of Jay-Z but because they are it’s most popular artists. Period.
Jay-Z wasn’t an amazing President because he had a whole lot of other shit on his mind. I think that he may have been doing too much but he wasn’t bad at his job. LL Cool J doesn’t sell records…….so why push that project??? LL has an old school kind of rapping that he hasn’t really grown out of….his record would have flopped and he would have blamed Jay…

If their is negativity in the entertainment industry it’s because people are tired of the trash that is considered music that we are bombarded with all over the radio, and the labels got the nerve to wonder why they aren’t moving alot of units…..it’s just laughable.

It’s not about good music, not really… More about precedent…if you sold 900K the last time you dropped, you’ll do about as much the next time because nobody dares think anymore. Now, maybe THAT is about good music, if…of course…the last album was full of “good music.”
But I think it’s ultimately about music having been such numbing vapid rubbish in recent years… I’m sure you’ll see that even ummmm less “good music” (lol) like Beyonce’s will do well in the first week too…
Many “artists” boast about people having underestimated them, thinking they would be one-hit-wonders… Well…the only reason they’re not is because, as I’ve explained, people don’t want to think anymore. If I liked your last song, I’ll like the next one…I don’t have time to dissect and analyze when it’s likely empty, anyway…

I agree to an extent….but i think that people ultimately will fork over hard earned dollars for good music, and when a artist come out with good music, it just sells without frills and bells and whistles cause it’s not needed….just as long as the cd is marketed correctedly, and the public is aware that there is a cd to buy….
On the other hand, i think that when people try to “push” less desirable music off on people, it may work for a while, but i think people ultimately rebel against that and demand better.
In terms of “precedent” as you speak of, i disagree…i think it’s actually about good music…….look at Toni B, look at Mariah, and Janet…back in the 90’s and even early 2000’s, they had really good sales, but seeminglly “fell off”……now if it were all about precedent, this would have never happened. Instead, i think if a high-selling artist put out something the public don’t like, they won’t buy it. They won’t support them simply because the last cd sold, i think that’s crap. I know hard core Mary J fans who didn’t like some of the songs out now on the radio, but got the cd and loved the other songs……and i think if the songs were junk, they would have honestly been disappointed..
Mary’s cd is real, it’s full of vulnerabilities, it’s just raw….i myself love it, because you can relate to Mary even though you had none of the bad experiences she had in life, but yet through her music, you feel her, and she becomes relatable and you can connect…..that’s a incredible feat to accomplish in my opinion, because most times, people can’t relate to you unless they had many of the same experiences as she had…i didn’t, and yet i can relate completely…

You’re speaking long-term, I wasn’t…I meant, literally, when records drop…and here’s my point: it’s cyclical. First week sales are more about the public responding to what it knows of the artist than they are about “good music.”
But of course you could make the argument that what the public knows of an artist/the artist’s last work is “good music” then it is a response to “good music.”
But the theory certainly stands in the long run…In recent years (remember I said “recent years” initially) people respond to what they know of the artist and other people responsd to those responses… It is, then, the proverbial monkey seeing and doing.

This has been rumored for weeks, so I’m not surprised.
No one can discount what Jay-Z has done for Def Jam - he bought bonafied R&B with pop appeal to what has always been known as a rap label with Ne-Yo and Rihanna. He bought NAS to the label - now Def Jam can truly say that all of the “legends” have been there. Jay doesn’t strike me as “self-promoting,” ala Diddy. What he does strike me as someone who knows how to get out while the getting is good, so good for him.
Jay’s also made news recently because of some major real estate deals/investments he’s made. As Bey said in “Soldier,” Jay definitely knows how to flip that money, on MOGUL status 4 REAL.
Jay-Z gets mad respect from me - there is defintely more to that brotha than meets the eye, more than anyone ever gives him credit for.

Good for Jay!!! He brought Def Jam back to light as far as hip hop, he got them 26 grammy nods and he put Ne-Yo, Rihanna, Kanye, Rick Ross, etc. on the map. Def Jam is going to FADE TO BLACK and the RAP artists have no one to point their failing sales’ fingers at. Def Jam is concentrating on R&B with JD and LA running it now.
ROCAFELLA is his heart and he wants to bring them back to the front where they belong.
If he goes to Columbia (where they were dying to get him first), he’s going to bring them to the front in Hip Hop like he did Def Jam.
The people that don’t know the biz or understand it hate on Jay, but the SUITS no Jay is BIG GOOD BUSINESS and that’s why they’re clamoring for him.

If that were true, why wouldn’t they just extend the contract, pay the man the money and move on? It doesn’t make sense… Music sales are down and if he’s gotten the ball rolling, if he’s brought such great recognition to the label why would they let him go? It doesn’t make sense… It doesn’t make sense… And, if the rumors are true and he accepts a job with Sony, it will be confirmation that he was basically fired because the only chance that he might not have been forced out is if he really did resign to chill…going to another label, accepting that position means you’ve got no reason, really, for having left the first… It doesn’t make sense… Business always does and…you know the phrase, kids: if it don’t make dollars then it don’t make sense… lol

It’s amazing the quantity of people making referrences, points, and statements about every aspect of the industry & artists careers. However, what’s more amazing is the conviction in which the people making these comments speak. It’s truely incredible! Looking @ the majority of these posts, there appears to be an overwhelming number of record label execs, employees, and industry insiders posting on this site.
With this new found info for future reference, whenever an artist, consumer, or anyone else for that matter, has an idea, issue, or concern, about any aspect of the industry, look no further than Concreteloop! The label exces & industry insiders here appear to have direct insite & info on the careers of such artists as Jay-z. Why speculate? If you want to know the “real” reason behind Jay-z’s departure from Def Jam or if you want to know why every artist on Def Jams roster isn’t selling the way you feel they should. Simply ask the record lablel execs here @ Concreteloop. They’ll be sure to clarify whether the problem has to do with Jay-z being a “poor” executive or if it has to do with the common industry fact of low successful recording artists vs signed artists ratios on the vast majority of record label’s rosters since..forever. Whatever the matter, there are plenty of label exces & industry insiders here to provide answers to all your questions 24/7. Who knew??!! HA!

The funny thing is that, while everyone else is clearly speculating, applying common sense (this is a market economy, you know…it’s quite transparent, that way) YOU are the only one who has come into this thing wearing your certainty like mail lol You’re asserting that anyone who dares speculate MUST be a professional/insider lol… Now, don’t you see the astounding presumptuousness in that???

@ # 121.. Your exactly right in that the vast majority of everyone who has commented in this thread has done so based on sheer speculation and assumption. As far as people applying common sense is concerned, well that’s only relevant depending on who you ask. Not all sense is common and not everything common is sensible. As for me, based on all the posts I’ve read, in my opinion there’s hardly a handful of people who have an actual understanding on various aspects of the music industry such as the current market. If so, they wouldn’t've made some of the types of comments they’ve made. There is a profound difference in fact and opinion and that difference is where speculation rears it’s ugly head.
My statements have nothing to do with my being presumptuous. More so that they are riddled with sarcasim directed at those who are making blanket statments about various issues when these statements stem primarily from assumption and speculation. We all speculate and assume things from time to time. However until there is evidence that our speculations and assumptions are true, then they are just that, specualtions and assumptions. The majority of the time, people make assumptions based on their opinions. If you feel compelled to state your opionion or share your idea as to why something is, then state is as so. “I think the reason why……” Don’t sit & and make blanket statements without providing factual evidence.
In hind site, I don’t even know why I’ve wasted my time repsonding to this thread (not your post specfically but everything as a whole) from the inception because this will continue to happen. People are going to do & say whatever they want regardless. I’ve realized this for a long time. Maybe one day I won’t feel compelled to respond.

It’s a given, articulated or otherwise, that when someone comments on this blog she is giving her own opinion. I disagree with you and I must reiterate: you’re being presumptuous.

CJG,
you need to get your facts str8. Jay didnt sign Nas nor did he bring nas to Def Jam.
LA Reid approached Nas about coming to Def Jam. LA Reid and Nas worked out Nas’s deal with Def Jam.
Jay didnt have anything to do with Nas

@ #122 And I’ll reiterate, I am not being presumptuous. That’s your ..assumption.. I’ve stated what I’ve stated & you’ve expressed your ..opinion.. about what I’ve stated. Going back and forth isn’t going to change what I’ve stated nor your opinion on what I’ve stated. So I’m not going to further this conversation.

Wow…*snifs* What’s with all the hatred?
Seriously. I’ve been a Def Jam fan since Public Enemy, not just Public Enemy, DMX, Jay-Z, LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Meth, Red,…damn near everyone on the label was allstars to me. Truth be told? Hip hop has been in one of those Bush-Era recessions for a while now. Jay-Z is not a truly tested label exec. I think even he knew that, what he is good at is acknowledging talent. Rihanna sold herself, she’s easily packaged in the pop circles. Neyo? Not far off, he’s R&B, but he can crossover pop quite easily. Kanye West? He doesn’t trust anyone else to handle his marketing, same with Jay-Z. Why is it so hard to understand that these are the most successful people on the label?
These are the only people you brought up that did well under Jay, you forget about Young Jeezy and Rick Ross? Rick Ross never broke through the glass ceiling at Slip N’ Slide until Jay brought him over, now he’s more pop than Trick Daddy, and he was the label’s cash cow.
Now I’m a Method Man fan and I’m a LL fan. Honestly the first single from both artists were lukewarm. That’s not Jay’s fault. That was the label’s decision to put those out as lead singles. They may have faired better as follow-up singles, but they went the pop route and the albums didn’t catch flames.
In the record industry, you pump money into slot machines that have great dividends and ride the wave. If you’re not getting a return on your investment, you cut your losses and invest in the ones that will (Rihanna, NeYo, Mariah Carey, etc.) So I can’t blame Jay for the sinking careers of Meth and Jay. Truthfully Tical 2000 didn’t sell well pre-J. LL went on this whole tangent working with J-Lo and he wonders why the streets don’t respect him anymore. He hasn’t been on since Mr. Smith.
Hate fuels the powerful. Respect the international hustle. You don’t see anyone blaming Kevin Lyles or Lyor Cohen or L.A. Reid? riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
Way to bounce Jay. It ain’t worth it.
