Grown folk music at its best. LOVE “Roses.” “Shake Down” is nice too — I can definitely see myself vibing to that when I’m with my fiancee’.

I’m a little nervous about you #77 - that was a foul thing to say about Aaliyah. She was a great artist in her own right and so were/are the others you mentioned. I love Mary, too, but many of the things that make Mary so great is because she overcame so many things. However, her struggles almost parallel Whitney Houston’s who you so callously put down. Abusive men, drugs, etc…and we should be praying for Whitney’s full and total recovery so she, too can regain her whole life, the same as Mary was able to. Agree or disagree, you need to check yourself joking about someone being taken from this world so soon.

#56 you have lost your damn mind! Teedra Moses can sing her ass off. And she has soul! I love Mary she is the shit she has soul and class I love her. I’ve always been a big fan since What’s the 411!!! Faith Evans voice is beautiful as well. Faith Evans wrote most of Mary’s music and she’s sung background on the majority of Mary J’s My Life album. So please don’t sleep on Faith. She’s married with children. Mary still thinks she’s young and she can do that b/c she’s the QUEEN! I love her and I will be purchasing her new cd and I don’t even buy cd’s anymore. And that Beyonce/Ashanti comment. We all know Beyonce is more talented than Ashanti but that’s not much competition. Ashanti can’t sing. Beyonce is overrated and someone had the nerve to compare Beyonce to the old Mary J who used to have 5 songs playing in heavy rotation over the radio. To me there’s no comparison. Beyonce is a pop singer who does the same dance moves and flinging swinging the hair looking dizzy as fuck. Mary is a soulful singer who doesn’t have the best voice in the world but she hits the spot for me. I can feel her. With Beyonce you can only hear her and she has no soul in her voice. i’ve heard growing pains in its entirety, and no, its NOWHERE NEAR one of marys best works, not even close. its not a classic album. its just ok. shes not goin to do “breakthrough” numbers this time out. “just fine” FLOPPED HARD. coming off of the success of “be without you” single wise so far, she has not delievered. “work that” SHITS on “fine”. ever since her label merged into geffen, she just has not been the same. they pick all the wrong singles to support the album.
what makes “pains” wack is the production. its not tight at all. it was a horrible decision to have the dream, and tricky stewart produce the bulk of the songs.
this is supposed to be the “queen of hip-hop soul” where the hell are the hip-hop songs? theres only 2 hip-hop tracks on the entire album. WTF?! she needs to stick with what originally got her to the plateau shes on. THE HIP-HOP!!!

I just got it today! Grown Woman is tha SHIZNIT!, but there is one song that really hits home to me: What Love is (track 11). Its ironic because I didn’t like Mary’s music UNTIL I heard Breakthrough and that made me go back and buy everything. She grew up. Some sisters had mothers who are stuck in misery and aunties stuck in misery so all they expect is misery. Mary’s music does show the transformation and she makes me proud. I love this new album as well.

Sisters we really need to work it out. “Mirror” is so real. “Work That” is so real. You won’t understand Mary until you allow yourself to grow up.
