#42 No Denzel probably won’t win an Oscar. He may not even get a nomination. The critics awards came out this week and the Best Actor award have constantly went to either Daniel Day Lewis for THere WIll Be Blood or George Clooney for Michael Clayton. For the most part American Gangster & THe Great Debaters have been left out. There’s so many good films that came out this year a lot of them got better reviews than American Gangster any way The Golden Globes will be announced tommorrow.

Um, I hope you guys realize that Forest Whitaker another Oscar winner is also in this film.THis will be Nat Parker’s breakout role. Here is what a critic said:

I’d love to get into Denzel Washington’s The Great Debaters, which I saw this evening, but it’s early yet. Discussions and terms await. But it’s essential to mention Nate Parker, who plays one of three African-American debaters (the other two played by Jurnee Smollett and Denzel Whitaker) from Wiley College in 1935 who wound up debating the Harvard University team, under the guidance of Washington’s Melvin B. Tolson.

I’ve never seen Parker before, but he’s got it. He’s charismatic, good-looking…a “tan” Paul Newman (as Newman was in The Young Philadelphians) who looks people in the eye cool and steady, and perhaps has a slight weakness for women.

Parker has only been in the game since ‘04. He’s acted only on TV and in crappy movies so far. (I missed his supporting performance in Pride, the swim-team sports movie with Terrence Howard and Bernie Mac that opened last March.) Worse, his next two are low-rent exploitation films — Tunnel Rats (directed by — yipes! — Uwe Boll) and Felon. The Great Debaters is Parker’s first and only A-level effort. He needs to build on it and move in another direction, or in five years he’ll be Dorian Harewood. It’s his call.

All I know is, Parker has a quality, a presence, a vibe. He could be another Denzel. A small group I spoke with after tonight’s screening agreed on this point, or at least that he’s Newman-esque. It’ll be intriguing to see what happens.

Jurnee was also recently on Roll Bounce as Bow Wow’s friend (can’t remember her name but Kelita Smith’s daughter). I remember her and her family, they use to have a show on ABC and they all rocked these wild dreads (but not dreads) look.

I’m so excited about this movie. I will definitely be in someone’s cinema on Christmas Day to see this. Everyone for the most part looks really nice but I am loooooooving Kimberly Elise’s dress. Jurnett’s dress is pretty too and Im glad to see Jurnett doing her thing. I’m glad she didn’t give up her dream despite how hard the industry is for African Americans and other minorities. I’m glad to see some positive black movies coming out and Im so happy that Oprah and Denzel took on this project.

I haven’t seen Jurnee in so long. She was good in “Roll Bounce”, that was my movie back in 2005. I remember that funny line she said in the movie, something like “You need to stop chewing on dem yellow crayons and start brushing with some Colgate yuck mouth!”, lol, that was funny…

This film looks like a testimony to the pride, love of education and community, and independent learning that black people had before the civil rights movement and forced integration destroyed that. You didn’t have to worry about some caucasian teacher that looks at your child like a monkey fated for prison inundating them with madness because back then the teachers were of your own people. Plus, those brothers and sisters back then were striving for real self-sufficiency that can only come from the love of one’s community first, not concern for “all races”. This is why black people have less economic control now than they had in 1805. Black people still don’t grasp the importance of that.

I am all for positive role models in black films, but she always has the productions where it is dated 30-100 years ago. I think that is why she is not in touch with the younger generation. she never makes films that deal with current issues. She is powerful and all but I think she has a Mammie complex. I am just saying….I mean I hope the movies does well, but I think she would do better in the movie genre if she dealt with more current issues. not that she has to do a gangster film, but at least make the characters look like they are successful or middle class. that is why Tyler Perry does so well, his films are like a breath of fresh air

Hey, @# 90 I been reading all the comments and I kind of agree with some of what #85 says. Because I have heard it said and I have thought .myself their has been a lot of hype by Jhud and my nephew has been in the NFL for years and he told me what the publicist do he says they even lie, and in fact I remember when this blog had a picture up big as day pictured side by side saying Aretha handpicked Jhud to play her and found it was a lie and that she was in Meet the Browns and Tyler just finised cutting it and she is not even in it and they even had that on her blog but removed, so I kind of think there is some truth to what people have to do to stay in the limelight whenyou are not really working everyday on anything, and trying to build your reputation. I’m sixteen and was so excited to be able to see a preview of the movie in Miami with my speech class. It’s probably one of the best movies I’ve ever seen and the actors gave Oscar worthy performances; it’s a definite best of ‘07. At the preview we even got to me the debaters : Jurnee, Nate, and Denzel (the younger one). Everyone go out and see it. It’s more than worth it.

Everyone looked good. I love Holly Robinson Peete so i’m glad to see her especially.

I can’t wait to see this movie. I’ll be there on christmas day!!!!

This really isn’t off topic…well, maybe…but I remember someone talking about a rumor about Jay Z thinking Denzel stole the American Gangster project from him. Well, I just wondered if anything else had come of it…I saw an interview with Jay Z and he talked about doing a short film for “Pray” and he talked about the story behind it and it was basically “American Gangster” (but perhaps it’s a typical enough thing, selling drugs) and I found it odd that when the man asked him who he admired, he didn’t name Denzel. I’ve seen a few other Jay Z interviews and everytime he was asked, in recent years, who he admired he named Denzel straight away.

I’m so happy to see black people coming together in a positive way…everyone looks great and I can’t wait to see this movie…everyone needs to go and support.

Let me start by saying that i’m disgusted by some of the comments that are being made about Jennifer Hudson, I know this is off topic but my heart has something to say:

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Jennifer Hudson three times in NYC. I must say she’s one of the most sweet, humble-spirited, god-fearing people that i’ve ever met (she’s such a sweetheart). It’s to the point that she does not even know how big she is, and that’s whats going to take her far. It’s amazing to me how some of you people can say such negative things about someone that you’ve never met. The thing is, Jennifer’s career is being driven by God, and her natural raw talent. God truely takes care of his own. Jennifer keep praying, keep striving for greatness, keep being you, because God knows you’re such an awesome person. I’m glad i got that off my chest.

I’ve already had the oppurtunity to see this wonderful movie, and it is an absolute must see. Everyone looks GREAT!
