MUSIC NEWS: ERYKAH BADU ALBUM NEWS / AMERIE TELLS ALL / JAMES LACKEY SIGNS PUBLISHING DEAL
Tuesday, December 11, 2007

Erykah Badu revealed that her new album is to be titled Nu AmErykah. The set is due Feb. 26 via Universal Motown. In response to the prior provisional title, Kabbah, Badu says that that name was never final and that she prefers to wait and title her albums once they’re finished.
“I named this album Nu AmErykah because I’m dealing with whatever is to come instead of what was,” said Badu, decked out in jeans, a red kimono and her trademark afro. “In taking on a project like this, I’m taking the responsibility to talk for my race and my planet. I’m sure the record company will make their money and they’ve given me the blessing of time.”
Badu’s last studio album, 2003’s Worldwide Underground was a great effort with little promotion, because Erykah’d just had a baby. However, with Nu AmErykah, she plans to make up for lost time. The double-disc album will include 18 tracks, including the new single “Honey,” produced by 9th Wonder and the follow-up ’70’s soul-inspired single, “Soldier 7.”
AMERIE TELLS ALL
Amerie’s AXN Commercial
Amerie recently got really candid about the situation with her record label in a popular urban magazine in the UK. Here’s what she had to say:
RWD: How has your label treated you?
Amerie: Er, you probably don’t even want to ask me that right now. That’s how I feel abut it. I personally love some of the people that work here in the UK; my publicist Shoshanna and Simon… but I really don’t want to talk about it ‘cos I want to keep it all positive, you feel me?RWD: Well, it seems the album didn’t really perform as well as it should have?
Amerie: ‘Cos they’re not pushing it like they should.RWD: Why aren’t they?
Amerie: We want to release “Crush,” but they feel there’s a lot going on. This is my thing; I’m an artist and this is not rocket science. “Take Control” was going good, so we knew we had to schedule the video for “Gotta Work.” But you need money to do a video, and by the time we got it cleared, it was late. They didn’t feel like that, but anybody with half a brain could see it was late. So then “Gotta Work” was going up, but it peaked and rapidly started coming down, so we knew we needed to do “Crush.” They said wait. I love the business and I studied the business and I told them we needed to do the other video, because you need to have another single when your other track is peaking. They’re talking about doing it next year, but I’m not doing it next year! So I don’t know what to tell you. I get that everyone’s filled with good intentions, but the road to perdition is filled with good intentions. There should have been no gaps.
Although Amerie’s Because I Love It was released months ago overseas, Amerie is going to release “Crush” as a single and is also going back into the studio with Pharrell to create some new music for the US released of the album. When I was a fan of Amerie, I was always eager to hear her get into the studio with The Neptunes. I think that could be a good look for her. Hopefully, Because I Love It will be released in the States within the next coming months.
Amerie can most recently been seen in the new AXN commercial. She looks amazing, as usual.
JAMES LACKEY SIGNS PUBLISHING DEAL

Usher’s younger brother, James Lackey, 23, who producers under the name J. Lack and is responsible for producing Lloyd’s club hit, “Get It, Shawty!” just signed a publishing deal with EMI.
“J. Lack surprised me with his talent,” said Jonnetta Patton, Usher and J. Lack’s mother. “He began creating beats while Usher and I were on the road working. One day he played a beat for us and we both were shocked. He has grown as a producer and has determination and the work ethic to be named among the very successful producers one day. I’m his 1 fan.”
J. Lack says he might put out a rap record in the future, but he really sees himself as a producer. He definitely has no aspirations of being a singer like Usher. You may remember, Solange just signed a publishing deal with EMI as well. Looks like they’re into new young talent. J. Lack’s beats actually are pretty good, just like Jonetta, I was surprised by the tracks that I heard.

Sweetie, there are plenty of artists out there that can’t sing worth a damn and still sell records out the ass, i.e. Ciara, Janet (I’m one of her biggest fans, but she’s never been a great vocalist to me), Madonna and (for the love of God) Britney Spears. The list goes on and on. And then there are artists who can sing but can’t sell records. So obviously vocals alone (unfortunatley) isn’t the only thing that sells records, which makes your “analysis” sound ignorant. Amerie is isn’t completely off base; her record label isn’t shoving her music down our throats like they do other crappy music. And honestly, I don’t think Amerie has a bad voice. She’s no Whitney or Mariah, but she can still sing, to me at leat.

Amerie doesn’t have a distinct sound because somebody borrowed it… before this certain someone borrowed it, we very much knew an Amerie song when we heard it. And, I never thought her vocals were the strongest, but I can say that her sound was enough to make me want to hear her music…but, again, someone borrowed it…

Don’t get mad at me because your girl ain’t selling records worth a damn and can’t sing! Funny how J.Lo Hater hates J.Lo, yet embraces Amerie who is in the same boat. Go figure.

Amerie? Puhleeze! Just because other mediocre singers (*cough* Rihanna, Ciara, Fergie *cough*) can manage to beat us over the head with their music doesn’t mean all mediocre singers have that right! LOL. You may want to explore your other talents.
Good for Usher’s brother for distinguishing himself and not staying in his shadow. Hope he has real talent and does something different from all these canned almost non-musical beats flooding the marketplace.

I don’t care what anyone says, “Because I Love It” is a hot CD. I bump it on the regular. If her label would just let her release Paint ME Over or That’s What U R, she would be set for the U.S. release, in my opinion. But it’s good to see she’s working on some new tracks and that label hasn’t given up on her. And at least she’s doing well overseas.
Can’t wait for the new Erkyah Badu album. She never disappoints.

Amerie sounds like Jennifer Lopez? Really? Are you serious? So, if you listen to a track like…”Let’s Get Loud” or “I’m Glad” and compare it Amerie’s “Why Don’t We Fall in Love”, “1 Thing” or “That’s What You Are” you’d think those songs were done by the same person? Is that what you people are saying?
Amerie’s a great singer, she writes her songs, assists in production, and is control of her music and her image… She’s so far above talentless, that it’s not even funny.
Some of you guys need to seriously educate yourselves. I feel like everyone is trying to “fit in” instead of just being themselves. Very few people take risks, and when someone does (and this isn’t only in music…this happens in real life) we’re quick to shoot them down. You guys should want more for yourselves than the mediocrity you’re being forced to listen to.

I like some of the hits Amerie had out a couple of years ago, but I must admit, her material did not get much airplay. That’s foul, but I’m interested in any of her new songs here in the States. I agree with what another blogger said, the posts of late seem kinda’ of boring- even a Bey posts would not help because she’s been overexposed on here. What is Bobby Brown doing these days? Did Boyz to Men get back together, can you do a post on them? Yawn - see ya’ll later.

The bottom line is, what Amerie said is true. Amerie is in the same pile as Mya, Kelly, Tamia, and so many others. Because Beyonce is on Columbia, unfortunately is is almost impossible for any other female on the label to get more than two singles pushed. If you think hard enough actually, Def Jam released Christina Milian last year, but kept pushing …………hummm……………oh yes-Ms.UM-BER-ELLA, ELLA, ELLA, EH, ok I’ll stop. They dropped her after “Say I,” and kept Rihanna’s “SOS “and “Unfaithful” going. I guess it might be becuase Beyonce and Rihanna crank up the sex appeal a bit more. It’s a tough Industry you know.
Some of you all brought up Alica’s “No One.” A lot of us, including me, didn’t like that song at first. But because Alica’s star power is so big, J Records kept throwing it at us, no matter how much we threw it back. So yes, because of that, many of us like it now, it has it’s two Grammy Nominations, so she is set. Mary J Blige’s “Just Fine” has a similarity as well, but I won’t dwell on that. So to me, the only way to really make it is to jump on a label that will be more than willing to promote you. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been with a company(i.e.-Kelly Rowland), if you wanna soar you gotta get on the right bandwagon. I would suggest a label like Geffen. because, they have artists like Mary, Fergie, Nelly Furtado, and Keyshia, (all who are 2008 Grammy nominees might I add), and they have been promoting them all very well. So, stay up Amerie.

Great points Benjamin,
It’s all about promotion and what record label seems to be fair with promotions. Columbia reps know they can only promote Bey for so long before fans lose interest , Def Jam too- you can only promote a “product,” I mean artist for so long. I know I long for variety. Alicia, Mary and Keyshia get plenty of airplay which I appreciate. It’s interesting to note that the latter artists are all under the same label. Other artists who keep pushed aside because a label keeps favoring a certain artist over everyone else should wake up and go where they can get fair treatment.

“Her only excitement occurs when she feels the need to hate.”
Yet, you’re the one with the name “J.Lo Hater”……..LOL
Crawl back to the projects and continue watching BET. See, while you’re sitting around hugging your Amerie albums and defending her to the death in cyberspace, I’ve seen her live and it was absolutely HORRIFIC. Pretty girl she is, yes, but she and YOU need to stop blaming the record label for her inability to sell records. She’s not selling records because she can’t hold the public’s interest. Just ask Janet Jackson. She keeps jumping from record label to record label, producer to producer like that’s the problem instead of admitting the problem is SHE CAN’T SING! LOL
I tried to make it as simple as I could for you, but I understand that there is only so much you can grasp with a GED. So, I’ll leave you alone now. I’m sure you’ll respond in your usual manner with “Quiche-A is a whore, trick, etc etc.” That’s usually the only comeback hoodrats can come with. But that’s cool. I’m a true Amerie Fan!!! Her first album was doper than the second, but the second one was still dope, Quiche-A don’t be a HATER!!! Nobody sells records anymore, Alicia Keys is about the only one and look at the crazy promotion J-Records gave her, Jay-Z’s albums been out almost two months and he ain’t even gold yet… the artist that usually sell aren’t selling, so you can’t judge an artist’s talent by how many records he or she has or hasn’t sold idiot…
Amerie is one of the hottest and most talented chicks in the game, and dig this dummy, if your not talented, YOU DON’T GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO RELEASE ALBUMS OVERSEAS, HELL, YOU DON”T GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO OVERSEAS… so stop the hating, Amerie’s been more places than your favorite singer Deelishis, it’s OKay QUICHE-A!!!

^^^ Hey Mike, news flash. I’m not hating! Amerie is the one bitching and complaining about not being “promoted” by her label, thus not being able to sell records. So, tell her to quit hating! If she’s so satisfied with being promoted overseas and selling records over there, what the hell is she or YOU complaining about? She should be glad she’s selling anywhere if people are buying based on her singing ability alone.
You want an artist who doesn’t get her just due? Tamia. That’s a REALLY talented sister, who CAN sing!
So tell Amerie to stick to making sure her legs are insured cuz her voice is a wrap!

Quiche-A get out of my head. I even went back and listened to Amerie’s first album last night. Still sounds like shit. Background singers & beats were the best part. When she started singing it all went to hell. She thinks that adding that stressed “I’m screaming but I’m not” makes her sound good it doesn’t. That shit was painful. Now, Tamia is an artist who can SANG but doesn’t sell or get promoted like she should. Just google “Tamia on Steve Harvey”. You will see that Aw-Merie should go sit down.

She wasn’t complaining about anything, she simply responded to a question, stating that she and her label weren’t on the same page. NO one was complaining, actually she took the high road by not dogging the label out. Talent is a mere form of opinion you don’t like the way she sounds, I can’t fault you there, but you can’t deny her talent, Amerie has put out 2 albums both went gold, during a time period when no one is selling records, Tamia has put out 5 albums, 1 went gold, and she was out before the major decrease in record sales. Now I must agree with you I do like Tamia, Tamia is way over due, but there’s a grip of artist that don’t get theirs.
I’ll let her know you like her legs…

I am proud of Amerie for speaking up in such an intelligent way. We keep getting bombarded with this same image over and over. Black women were always known as songstress in the music industry. Now it seems all black women are known for now is who can slide down the pole the quickest and the best at their concerts. Amerie can really sing. But if she appears to be slightly intelligent they will not promote her. With all the black female singers out now Beyonce is the best. I can’t even type that without getting sick to my stomach. I have never in my life seen someone so overrated. I think she is on her 13th minutes of her 15 minutes.
The sad part is that it is black men that’s behind this foolishness with black women in the music industry. It is all of these black men who puts all of this foolishness out. I can guarantee you when a truly gifted black woman comes out and she is displaying her talent it is not a black man who is pushing her. Which is truly sad.
