MUSIC NEWS: THRILLER REVISITED / CASSIE CHATS ABOUT NEW ALBUM / BEYONCE GOES COUNTRY?

Monday, December 3, 2007

Michael Jackson in Ebony Magazine

Michael Jackson will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the masterpiece, Thriller. The celebration of this will include a new edition of the set, due Feb. 12 via Epic/Legacy Recordings. It will include remixes by Kanye West, Akon and Will.i.am of Black-Eyed Peas fame, plus rare and unreleased material from that time period.

Kanye West has signed up to remix “Billie Jean,” while Will.i.am tweaks “The Girl Is Mine” and “P.Y.T.” The album also features a new version of “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” with both Akon and Will.i.am, which I posted in our new music review recently.

Jackson has been working on and off on his first studio album since 2001, but the status of the project is unknown, with no real information as far as a release. It is rumored, though, that he is working with the producers revamping the Thriller project, as well as Ne-Yo, and quite possibly, Timbaland. There have also been rumors of a Jackson 5 reunion tour. One of the Jackson 5 spoke out recently of Michael definitely being involved.

We’ll see. CL will always keep you updated!

CASSIE CHATS ABOUT NEW ALBUM

Bad Boy recording artist, Cassie is working on a follow-up to her debut album, which has been rumored to be titled, The Return. I guess everyone deserves a second chance. Recently, Cassie sat down with allhiphop.com for an interview and discussed her new album. Check out what she had to say:

AHH: Let’s get into the new album. What do you want people to feel once they have heard it?

Cassie: It’s a more vulnerable album; it’s a little bit stripped down as far as vocally and the content in the songs. Like I did a song last night called “That’s Not What Love Is” and it’s about a very, very real situation that a lot of people can relate to. It has a lot of emotion behind it. I really hope people get it and they see me in a different light – without the makeup, the hair and the clothes… just me, by myself. My album artwork is going to be really intimate. I want people to see me, how my boyfriend would, if I had a boyfriend that is. The way the music is coming together; I sound like I feel it.

AHH: Who have you been working with on this album, as far as producers or guest appearances?

Cassie: I have no guest appearances so far; I’m sure that will come once we finish up and finalize the track listing and things like that. As far as producers, I’ve got to work with Puffy which hasn’t happened before, which is really, really cool. He’s really been hands-on with this project. I worked with Ryan Leslie, of course again, I worked with Kanye, I worked with Eric Hudson, Bryan Cox. Literally, I worked with a whole roster of talent. Last night I got the opportunity to work with a writer by the name of Jim Beanz, we had met before but had never really been familiarized properly. I’m working with Danja too.

Click here for the entire interview.

I’ve posted some new music from Cassie, but nothing that was too spectacular. The list of producers is pretty cool though, so her second album may shape up to be interesting as far as music, but probably vocally underwhelming. You can more recently spot Cassie in Sean John ads with Lauren London, and she just wrapped up shooting the sequel to the film Step Up.

BEYONCE GOES COUNTRY?

beyonce.jpg

I’m not sure what to believe as far as Beyonce news goes anymore, because just a month ago, Beyonce has signed on Timbaland to produce the majority of her upcoming record, which was supposed to be a dance album. Now, ever since her Bluegrass performance of “Irreplaceable” with country band, Sugarland, at this year’s AMA’s, rumors are swirling of Beyonce taking a country western direction on her upcoming album (which I hope isn’t coming out next year).

A source tells British newspaper The Sun:

“Beyonce wants to try something completely different. She’s a fan of country music and thought that would be an interesting and exciting way to go. She contacted Amanda early this week and she is going over to work with her on it.”

Apparently, Beyonce has tapped award-winning songwriter, Amanda Ghost, who was behind James Blunt’s hit “You’re Beautiful” for the project. I don’t know about this one, guys. We’ll see. I’d much rather hear the dance album, because I think the Timbaland records would be crazy. But I guess we’ll find out how much truth there is to this.

LIKE I SAID LAST WEEK, HOW WOULD A BRITISH NEWSPAPER GET THE STORY BEFORE AMERICA, I BELIEVE IT IS JUST AS YOU SAID, A RUMOR. PEOPLE SHOULD LET HER GET IN THE STUDIO FIRST, UNTIL I HEAR IT FROM MUSICWORLD OR BEYONCE, I DON’T BELIEVE ANY OF IT!

OH YEAH, I WAS 13YRS OLD WHEN THIS HIT! OMG, MY OUSIN HAD THE ALBUM, I USED TO LISTEN TO IT ALL THE TIME. I THINK I MUST HAVE READ THE BOOKLET INFORMATION A THOUSAND TIMES. I REMEMBER I WAS SO EXCITED BECAUSE HIS SISTER DID THE BACKGROUND VOCALS. IT ALSO LEFT ME WONDERING WHO WAS ROD TEMPERTON. IDK I WAS WEIRD. I THINK I WILL PURCHASE THIS 25 YRS LATER MYSELF!

MJ is still the king…I look forward to the re-release of Thriller!

I think that a country album from Beyonce is a pretty good idea…but I think that she has to pull back on the power of her voice.

Cassie is kinda up in the air for me…she always seems to have a lot of hype surrounding her that she can’t live up to.

that was just IGNORANT!

cassie is not a singer, she’s a model. she’ was just lucky that she had someone descent producing her music.

beyonce better not be doing what they say she’s doing. but i mean im sure if she does, it’s not going to be anything too extreme.

i love thriller

I hope she doesn’t go country, I think a dance album would be more successful for her. She is determined to cover every genre of music isn’t she?! Michael Jackson’s album sounds like its gonna be hot! I will be the first person to buy it when it comes out. As far as Cassie is concerned, she said her vocals were a little bit more stripped down. Get out of here Cassie, your vocals are already stripped, lol. Lol at Brian saying her vocals are underwhelming, because it is so true.

Thriller being remixed seems like it might have a good outcome. I’m actually looking forward to that.

Cassie…Sit Down!

I think if Beyonce does anything country it may be a song or two not an entire album. That’s a little far out in left field for most of her fans.

@ No. 4

I agree with you about Beyonce’s voice. It was very hard to listen to Beyonce sing on the AMA’s because she was singing in her normal style over the country rendition of her track. It just didn’t work for me.

I dunno if this Beyonce album rumor is trueeeee BUT if she does decide, she might be able to pull off this change of genre in her music whether its country, dance music, rock style etc. cuz she always delivers something good on her albums….Its good she decides to do something different in every album, Dangerously In Love was VERY different to B’Day, but both were great outcomes….but I think the songs wiv Timbo will be hott hott hott…maybe she should stick to sum of her RnB style into it too…anyways I cant wait for her next album its gonna be tha bomb I bet like always..

HAHA Cassie Cassie Cassie….tell me why is she singing again? Did she eventually have lessons or sumthing lol

Micheal Jacksons Thiller is the best no doubt about it…the remixes sound alrite…

love MJ and will definately buy his re-released album

Cassie is a whore lol, her vocals being stripped down? that means she wont even be whispering this time! she really should find a new way of making money. shes a non-talent

beyonce is always trying to be everybodies best friend, one minute shes r&b then pop then latina/spanish and now country/dance? hmmm i dont expect wonders from her album cus for somone so highly regarded she just never brings it musically. her best song is crazy in love or IMO dangeriosly in love but other than that shes not that great a musician, performer yes musician no

I think beyonce doing country would be cool Im kinda a country fan myself. But um yeah she might be able to pull it off. I would love to see what that sounds like. and yeah that would be absolutly different for her & a first from booty poppin, so broadway, to country!

14.

doll-face

Monday, December 3, 2007 /

Ooops I meant to say that would be a first for a person to go from booty popin, to broadway to country.

I think you can’t remake something classic that doesn’t need to be touched. But with that said it will probably be some cool revisions, w/the exception of the Akon one, but I just don’t like Akon so yeah I’m hating.

Cassie-NEXT NEXT NEXT! Hell, someone give me a record deal. NEXT!

Beyonce-I understand get ya money where you can but that performance wasn’t all that sweet. And the reason why it crossed over was b/c the lyrics, thanks to Neyo, were genuis! Not b/c she sang it so superbly, which she did but nonethelss, she doesn’t need to do a country album. Stop trying to be so pervasive. Sit down somewhere, you don’t have to try your hand at everything. Just annoying.

I hope Bee is not going to do that because, i was not really a fan, i just have the first album but her versatility just show something : she ain’t have identity!!! I mean, who knows but she better do it good cause All the carrie underwood and all the country singers are waiting for her to fail! they will be mad if a black girl can do country better than them which i highly doubt. But once again, this is just speculation. One thing is sure is that beyonce don’t give a dam about doing black music or representing black people, she represents herselfs and her bank account lol!!

I’m so happy Michael is re-releasing thriller and having some new production…I think it will be great and if he is in deed in the studio I think he will come out with something great…as far as Cassie…smh at her saying she’s toning down her voice for this album as if she actually has a voice..I really think she should stick to modeling cause her looks is not getting her album sales…and Beyonce…please don’t do it!…I like Beyonce and all but that AMA performance was horrid and her voice is not versatile enough to make that switch….Country is not something you can just crossover to…pop is easy and dance is easy so stick to that…

Open your minds black people. Country music can actually be really good. It’s one of the few genres where the art of songwriting is still strong. It’s not as if B would adopt a twang or anything. It’d just be a different soundscape. Please remember that the great Ray Charles did a country album or two in his time. We all know she can do dance, I’d enjoy seeing her do something truly challenging. B-Day came across as phoned in to me.

Bee I understand that she likes to push the boundaries of music but country come on.
Cassie needs to let it go with the singing. Are her and Puff messing around?
I’m not the new Thriller because I love the original so much it may ruin it for me.

I like country music. I won’t believe that Beyonce is doing a country album until she says it. Music lovers will agree that country music is the closest to R & B. It has soul and most of the artist talk about real life and heartfelt situations. I’ll buy it if she does one.

31.

PUZZLED!

Monday, December 3, 2007 /

oh….it kills me that black folks stay hatin on a hard working female…the lies the sites tell are not gospel. so many people thought b’day would flop…now she is 7 million world wide. she has a hell of a fan base. no one else sold out world wide….and toured for more that a year. people under estimate her hustle. until i hear it from beyonce, i will not believe it. when she interviews, she constantly says…”where do prople get this nonsense from”? she is laughing at the crazy sites that lie on her consistantly. just because a country western group COVERED her song on an award show, does not mean she is going country…. crabs in a barrell…..so sad……

She has time, why not do’em all. Rock, Rap, Country, Spanish (oops she already did that), Childrens songs, Old School Musicals, Gospel, Alternative Rock, Quiet Storms, Techno, Instrumentals, hell the list goes on. I’m not mad at her.

She is a for real a “living legend” in her own rites.

I don’t think Beyonce will do country…and, besides, with the way she shakes her ass..i don’t think country is her style. UK tabloids are worse than the U.S…so i don’t believe it!!

I must say that I am very impressed with her Beyonce Experience DVD. I was never a Beyonce “fan” and I never knew why people were so crazy about her until I saw the entire concert DVD..and now, sadly, I am have become a Beyonce fan…I have never seen a female singer perform like that..I was like “WOW!!!”

37.

OMG

Monday, December 3, 2007 /

I just read the entire Cassie article and I am left wondering what happened to make her question whether or not she wanted to continue singing. I apparently missed some of her performances. Help me out someone, I am out of the loop on this one.
Anyhow, i have high hopes for Cassie. I think she is beautiful and that she has a singing voice. It may not be in the same category as Alicia or Beyonce however the girl can sing. So long as she comes with a few hit singles, I think she has potential to be the next Rihanna. I see these two girls in the same category, except that naturally Cassie is gorgeous.
I really hope that she comes correct with this one and keeps herself out there, like she is currently doing.
Go Cassie!!

Beyonce….juuuuust great. Already talking about another album? Jesus. Go away!!!

@Ms.Bmore welcome to the club. Although I am a Bee stan now I didn’t like her when DC first came out, I am from Houston and when the group broke up I blamed her as well. Slowly she won me over and the icing on the cake was seeing her on a stage a few years ago. She is truly in a league of her own.

Thriller was a great album back in the day. There are some great producers working on remixing a few songs on the album (if not all) but I am kind of eerie about the whole thing. It is usually best to leave classic albums and songs alone.

@V i think you mean she needs to change the STYLE of her singing not the power. there are female country singers with power in their voices. martina mcbride and faith hill are 2 examples. bee doesn’t have to make her voice less powerful she just has to stop with all the runs

if beyonce really goes country…

i have to say.. tho i think it is very risky.. as an artist i appluade her for being creative and taking chances.. showing the world that as an artist.. music an be expressed in many diffrent ways…

now i know that not many people will think that way.. and i think maybe she should wait until later on down the line to do something sooo risky.. (Babyface just released his country album.. as an ARTIST EXPRESSING HIMSELF… not as a brand.. as beyonce is at this point in her career)

but i wish her all the best.. and i think she is setting a great example and trying to expose the world to other things…. if she goes this route and its hot.. alot of people will be exposed to a style they never were exposed to before… that is if she does it correctly…

you feel what im saying…

again it is a risk… but as an artist.. i think its very honorable!

42.

peacekeeper00

Monday, December 3, 2007 /

They need to leave Thriller alone! You don’t remix/remake or whatever they are doing…a work of art. These overhyped producers are not talented enough to come of with something that would top the original versions.

LMAO @ Cassie. How can see be the next Rhianna when they came out at the same time. I think people mistake beauty for talent. Cassie is like Rhianna in the sense that they interest in them is their looks. And as you can see from Cassie’s interview, she is aware of that. Notice how she said her artwork is going to be “intimate” meaning she’ll be nude. She is using her looks to sell herself. Most of today’s female celebrities are famous for looks not talent and that’s sad. The entertainment industry needs to get back to raw talent.

43.

Im the only polar bear up in this bitch

What Cassie is saying about her new album is what all other artists ALWAYS say about their new albums “more stripped down, vulnerable, more of who i am, more me, more emotion, more this more that, blah blah blah”

Ray Charles was accepted in the genre because he’d worked with a country band earlier in his career…
Trust me, Beyonce will NOT be accepted…PERIOD.
I certainly think she’s exploring a bluegrass sound…but I don’t think she’s doing country, as they always seem to do, I think she’s going to borrow from the sound in order to have an individual “sound” to her next CD…I think it’s going to be dance, but how Amy Winehouse’s last CD was 60’s doo-wop and Christina Aguilera’s CD was Jazz…I think Beyonce’s going to blend that clean, overly-modulated bluegrass sound with something and make a dance record. In short, I think the girl is trying to find people smart enough to make an entire album full of “Irreplaceable’s”

As for Cassie, I much prefer her as the vapid socialite…our Paris Hilton, if you will…

#24- In Rhianna’s best day, best year, or best life she coould never top Beyonce. Now Im not a really big B fan, but I’ve seen the numbers (records sold, # 1 hits, awards, etc.) and Rhianna cant top that. I did not like the country perfomance on the AMA’s. I dont know how many fans would really back a country western album by the mogul. Regardless, she will always reign as the queen of our generation. No one really does it better. Its true, if you dont believe me go see her in cconcert/

Well to those who questioned why I compared Cassie to Rihanna, the reason why I made that comparison is because they both are mediocre vocalists. They both have the good looks. Neither of them write their own music so it really all depends on the writers to deliver those lyrics and for them to sing them and make the best of it. Rihanna was lucky to have gotten Umbrella. If Cassie is lucky, she will be able to work with great writers and pick some hits and put her swagg into it and have the same opportunity Rihanna had. All Cassie needs is a few major hits and she’ll be right up there with Miss RiRi. They may have come out at the same time, but it’s obvious that Rihanna’s career has really taken off while Cass is still waiting for her time to shine.

OK, I’ll be excited for the Michael Jackson album if they do mix it that way. As far as Cassie’s vocal being stripped down, she might want to think about that because she know he ass can’t sing. I have had enough of Beyonce, DO NOT torture me with country music on top of her overexposed butt!

Monday, December 3, 2007 /

well no surprise here - while this rumor has been out for a while, i can see beyonce doing this. more importantly, i think it’s important for black folks to be exposed to as many different things as possible. I mean we do everything and we’re everywhere - black folks are cowboys and rodeo riders and manage the frontiers and grow crops, we swim in the waters of Lake Minnetaunka (or whatever) and we can be found from Southern Florida to northern Wyoming. If the music’s not for you, that’s cool, but it could become somebody else’s favorite album. As a person that enjoys an occasional Kenny Rogers or Carrie Underwood, I’m glad to see it. It’s just like when people said we couldn’t play golf or couldn’t swim or play hockey - nope, it’s just because we were never given the opportunity. Like golf or hate golf, I bet you know who Tiger Woods is. If she wants to explore this venue and maybe open some minds in the process why not?! Who will it hurt? Anyway, off my soapbox… peace CL

Cassie: If at first you don’t suceed…PLEASE GO SIT DOWN…BECAUSE THERE IS NO TALENT THERE VOCALLY…NONE…I MEAN COME ON…THAT FIRST AND ONLY SINGLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ENOUGH…IF SHE WAS NOT A “MODEL CHICK” SHE WOULD NOT HAVE EVEN BEEN GIVEN A SECOND CHANCE IN THE STUDIO. SHE IS ATTRACTIVE AND HER MODELING IS NICE…LET’S STICK TO WHAT WE DO BEST!

Beyonce: I prefer her R&B ballads and I can’t say that I’m a country fan…BUT we all know that B will push the envelope…so IF this is true I’ll be listening for that country single because I am damn curious as to how it will sound…LOL!

M.J: Will always be a classic…but nothing wrong with reinventing the wheel…it’ll be interesting to hear how it sounds with all the guest appearances!

Beyonce is not taking any chances, she’s a sellout. For real, why even cross over into that market, nobody from the urban market listens to country, and if you do your telling a lie just because you heard Beyonce trying to switch it up. Ya’ll are too funny.

60.

IncubusRocks

Monday, December 3, 2007 /

Im sorry but based on performances Cassie cant even touch rihanna. “OMG” if you were to see the performances that cassie gave you would agree that Rhianna is out of her league talent wise. Rihanna may not have a powerful voice, but she actually manages to sing during her performances. Heck she even holds notes a couple of times lol. Now cassie’s ass couldnt even whisper her simple ass song “me and you” on tune. All of her performances have sucked, yet Rihanna is capable of puling off a decent performance.

61.

OMG

Monday, December 3, 2007 /

I hear you.
I have never seen her performances, which is why I didn’t understand why she was reconsidering singing. I’ve done some research in the past few hours trying to understand why so many people felt this way about her. I still haven’t seen her perform however I do know that when Rihanna first came out, her performances weren’t that great either. She couldn’t hold her notes, she could barely dance. However RiRi definitely did her homework and apparently had some vocal coaching and came back stronger with her second album. I only hope that after the devastating responses to Cassie’s album and performances, that she has done her homework. What I was saying is that her and Ri both started out the same. Let’s see if Cassie has an “umbrella” of her own with this album. If she does, I guarantee everyone will be jumping on the Cassie bandwagon.

If you’re not really familiar with country music, you might think someone’s thinking this idea crazy means that they need to expand their horizen…BUT the music is about rugged individualists…cowboys and miners and such…it doesn’t tell our story, jazz did…so SURE we don’t like country music…we aren’t supposed to..but there are a few of us, those like me who grew up around it, who do…but, again…it isn’t a sign of our insular, short-sightedness…nah…it’s a sign of culture, interests that mean something to you…country music won’t enrich the black experience…but jazz will.

And, a side note: if you’re amiliar with the genre (country music), if you grew up in a predominantly white area in the South as I did…you know that there isn’t a chance in hell Beyonce could have a successful career as a country artist. The genre is VERY ESOTERIC…

I hope she don’t go country….but it may sound okay..who knows?

Timbaland’s album that came out this year was garbage. I hope he give her better material than he had on his own album which was garbage. As a Timbaland fan I was sadly disappointed and quite horrified. People always said that he can make bangin songs/beats for other artists but not for himself and I agree. I was bamboozled!

@62 - I hear you, but no I don’t think people who don’t like it should open their minds, I said I think people would have an opportunity to be exposed to it, who maybe never would give it a chance because they would assume it doesn’t tell our story. In actuality a black person singing country is not a new idea and it tells a lot of black people’s stories. There are more stories than just the ones that are attributed to jazz, but again, we have not had the opportunity to tell them because, like you mentioned, the genre is quite esoteric (and that was very p.c. by the way, I know exactly what you mean). The fact is, there were many blacks who left the south and headed west, NOT north, and because (white) history books don’t tell it doesn’t mean it’s not real. You should google black cowboys and blacks in Texas and the West. We obviously migrated there somehow and those are different stories than the Renaissnaces of New York and migration to Chicago. Remember, we, along with the Natives, built this country with our blood, swear and tears. No I don’t think if you don’t like country you should just give it a try, but there may be some folks who don’t even know what it would be like to hear us singing it, but it’s definitely our history, too. Gotta learn our history is all.

Cassie seriously needs to go join a beauty pageant or something.Whoever sat this girl down and told her she had a future in singing needs to be fired. She can’t even lip synch on que. Beyonce could do a tehcno album and people would still buy it!!!!! I highly doubt she’s going country though.

I’m sorry…I don’t agree…Country music doesn’t enrich our experience one bit…I’m telling you this as a person who grew up in the South, around “cowboys” and such… If you search the archives, you’ll find that Charley Pride is the only African American artist to have a successful career in the genre. I know. I don’t mean to be authoritative, but I grew up here…among it all…rodeos, trail rides, ranches…and I can tell you…do not let the “Hick Hop” Cowboy Troy fluke and the new black female country artist fool you… these two folk KNOW they’re choosing a difficult road..that’s why Cowboy Troy has a gimmick: country hip hop and the girl…well, she’s always going on and on about representing for blacks in the genre. Well, guess what? Don’t represent; there’s no need to. lol

Also, #71…if you’ve ever seen the videos, you would know just why it isn’t about us…most of the bar scenes have confederate flags in them…lol
Now, who would want to watch that? Sure not all African Americans went North, they went West and lived in laymen quarters. lol Not being crude, but I’m telling you…if one exhausted the info on black cowboys, that history still wouldn’t mean a hill of beans to the country fans. Country music, as I said, is esoteric…they are NOT singing about us…they do NOT want to…even in patriotic songs, their target audience is that Conservative like-minded few. It wasn’t until Shania Twain introduced elements of pop culture in the genre, that artists became “open” to things like African American models in videos.
