NEW MUSIC FROM MARY J. BLIGE

Thursday, December 20, 2007

♫ Mary J. Blige feat. Eve - Mirror

Mary just released her latest studio album, Growing Pains on Tuesday. Apparently, there were a few tracks left off the album. “Mirror” was included in those songs. I actually like the song a lot. I think what makes me like the album is the Eve feature. I’m not quite sure why “Mirror” was left off the album. It’s definitely written and produced by The Dream and Tricky Stewart, you can hear his trademark “eh’s” in the background of the chorus. The Dream has been getting a lot of love in the streets, since all the writing he’s been doing, and his album dropped. Big things. Also, be sure to be on the look out for Eve’s new album in ‘08. I’m looking for more features from her.

lol @ 11.. Yeah, I’m not too fond of DREAM, but I think its nice that he can deliver something (consistently) other than the atrocities he’s done for his own album; something grown, but not vulgar or played out!.. Or maybe it’s just his voice that makes his music sound adolescent? hmm IDK!!!

Oh, and I love this song!! I bumps it! love Mary’s vocals and Eve too.. I wish u didnt have to go thru iTunes to get it.. What about us Mary? What about the folk who left the house to get it?? lol j/k

Mary should be working with really DEEP writers…she CANNOT carry a pop tune. And that’s just that. This sounds grasping and dated. Mary should have gotten with Lauryn Hill and–don’t kill me–Amy Winehouse. I know ya’ll are going to be like “Amy Winehouse” blah blah “Who needs this white girl” The truth is Amy’s lyrics are just as raw and real as Mary’s message BUT they are at once artistic and out of kilter…Amy’s art is peculiar. Mary could sing about positivism and feminism and racism and humanism and all that stuff she represents now BUT unless you can manage to make it art…well, you’ve just got a lump of clay. Mary is basically selling herself at this point: “I’m Mary and I’m real and you know me and you know I keep it real.” That’s essentially what ya’ll are buying with a Mary CD.

@GEM

Your whole comment is your opinion of course…art is “subjective” to each individual, and when i hear mary’s songs, i can hear the artistry behind it…art is meant to cause a stir in someone, or make them “feel”, stir up emotions, no matter which emotions are touched….and i get all of that with a Mary album….lump of clay in my opinion is not how “I” would describe her cd AT ALL…I absolutely love it, and of course this is my opinion.

AND IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT HER SELLING TECHNIQUES ARE, THE POINT IS MARY IS SELLING RECORDS AND SHE IS THE QUEEN OF HIP HOP, NOT FREAKIN POP. SMH, SOME PPL NEVA GET IT, BUT CANT BLAME THEM, , GUESS. DO U MARY!

of course “art” is subjective…as are our perceptions of reality (perhaps “art” is not really “art”) BUT when lyrics are familiar, commonplace, cliche…it’s likely not art, even if there are good intentions and they’re headed in a positive place…it’s just unfinished thought (which I’m sure most of you would see if it were not for these larger-than-life personalities).

@GEM who wrote:

I disagree again….some of the most common, plain things are the highest priced art in the world ever…simplicity doesn’t means the artistry factor is absent…look at the picture of mona lisa…there’s nothing spectacular about her, and she had about as common and simple a look as a woman can have…however, not to the artist who painted her portrait, he saw a deep beauty….and i need not mention what the original painting would go for in terms of dinero today……so just cause something is familiar or commonplace doesn’t mean it lacks luster, and some of the most “cliche” sayings are broadly accepted for it’s usefulness worldwide, so the appeal is major.

Once again i think Mary did her thing on her, and i’m moved with each and everyone of her songs…my money was well spent.

I can’t hear the song but I am sure it’s a cool vibe.

Mary selling 600k the first week is great! She will likely come in 2nd to Josh Groban whose Christmas CD is sooooooo beautiful! And you know he got the Oprah stamp of approval so you know how that works! But Mary never ceases to amaze me. I think Mary has built such a bond with her fans that she can not be denied!

You misunderstood me…of course there’s lots of familiarity…better examples would be found art, pop art, etc…sure…if there were not some sort of familiarity I don’t know how we’d ever “get it”…BUT I’m talking about music, about lyrics that are “familiar, commonplace, cliche” do not denote art. Sorry. If that were so we wouldn’t need novelists, authors, and poets…because anyone with even the vaguest antiquated human concept of love and happiness could chuck us a chestnut.

I MEAN COULD YA GET ANY MORE POP THAN THAT? MARY CAN DO WHATEVER TYPE OF MUSIC SHE LIKES, BECAUSE SHE IS MARY! LOL, I FEEL LIKE A MARY “STAN” OR MAYBE THE INTERNET JUST GOT ME GOIN NUTS!, LOL

SEE AFOREMENTIONED: “She CANNOT carry a pop tune” (”carry” being the operative word). Elton John is a phenomal writer and artist.

MARY CAN DO WHATEVER TYPE OF MUSIC SHE LIKES, BECAUSE SHE IS MARY!

Again you prove my point: Mary is basically selling herself at this point: “I’m Mary and I’m real and you know me and you know I keep it real.” That’s essentially what ya’ll are buying with a Mary CD.

Look…while I scoff at this “so there!!!” thing you THINK you’re doing with all your replies I really don’t mean to disrespect Mary fans. I don’t. My thing (and it has been from the very first comment) is that she’s not putting her message to good use. It’s unfinished…it’s contrived… I think she could do better. Don’t enlist The Dream…how about calling your best friend Lauryn Hill up? Or giving a serious up-and-coming talent a chance?

“THE POINT IS MARY IS SELLING RECORDS…”

“HOW BOGUS AND SIMPLE MINDED! NEWS FLASH…”

“TALKIN OUT THE SIDE OF YA NECK ONCE AGAIN…”

My opinions are my own and I was never once insulting to anyone on this blog in saying what I did. Now, though…I must say that you don’t seem at all the sort to shut someone down in a debate. Hence the “come talk to me” thing…

@GEM who wrote:

Sorry, i disagree again……aren’t all music lyrics “familiar”, since there’s no new words under the sun….all the music that we hear use the same words, each artist just put them in different order, and put a different melody or beat to it…and since when has music not been considered “art?” And once again, since the likeness of music is subjective, then it stands to believe that whether a song is “artistic” is subjective……Music can be extremely artistic…rap is a artistic form of music, in fact when it first appeared on the scene, some thought it was garbage, and some saw it as a progressive form of the “art of music”….as well as so many other genre’s of music. When the celebrities preach about saving the art, they are talking about preserving not only drama classes, but the teaching of music to children, because music provide much to our enjoyment in society….it is so a art, therefore subjective, whether in it’s common form or not, whether cliche or not….i…..never mind….i just agree to disagree with you….cause we’d be doing this shit all day….

lol I didn’t say music wasn’t art (the thing that started it all was that I don’t think Mary’s music amounts to art lol remember? ) or that there writers should invent new words (huh????)
Nevermind. I use elipses a lot…I didn’t transition from the whole expecting familiarity in art thing…maybe that was confusing…anyway…yeah, thanks for digressing… enough.

It’s aiight. Funny thing, though. I hear the “Umbrella”-esques “eh’s” in the background — wonder if Mary regrets not getting that song after all, LOL. She just gave an interview where she said she didn’t jump on musical trends, but this song sounds a bit trendy.

However, the message is totally Mary — and that’s what her fans buy when they buy Mary. She’s smart to keep playing to it.

I bought Growing Pains. The album is fire but I agree with you. I wish this was an addition to the album as well. We don’t hear enough good female R&B singer/female rapper collabos these days. Eve added some heat to Amerie’s 1 Thing remix some time back.
