NEWS: MICHAEL VICK SENTENCED TO 23 MONTHS

Monday, December 10, 2007

mvick.jpg

Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison today, stemming from his involvement in an underground dog fighting ring and initial failure to come forward.

During his sentencing the suspended football star apologized to the court and his family. However, Judge Henry Hudson told him, “You need to apologize to the millions of young people who looked up to you.”

Yeah he broke the law but he still should have recieved more mercy from the court. I’m sorry, I still feel that if he was a white athlete or star like the baldwins, he would have gotten credit for the time he has served, the sensitivity class, and for the apology. Its a shame he went in jail early for nothing, because I read he won’t recieve credit for it. He’s being treated worst than a murderer of a human. The goal is to ruin him for good.

Too bad he could’nt say no to his people. That’s what you got to do when you hit it big. Some family want you to prove you are still “down” and expect you to do whatever they ask so they won’t call you stuck up. I really feel they probably pressured him to do this whole thing and he caved in to still be in their good graces. Too bad his mom didn’t tell him and the family NO! I would have told them, they all are going to have to find something else to do and make money like a family cleaning business or real estate firm and make folk get their training and licenses to participate. I know you can’t control a grown man, but she may have been able to influence him in some way to put a stop to it. Its okay to help family but not if they come at you with that sense of entitlement and they can put pressure on you or they will get pissed and trash you if you don’t do what they want or to “help” them out. They need to make the effort to do something like go to school, get a certificate, do something legit and I may talk to some people to get you a job or I may buy your school books for college, or if you bring me a good report card for your first year in college, I may pay your tuition for the next year. Give or do when they put forth the effort first. This may or may not have been the case but I’m just saying things like this do happen when you make it in some families. Hopefully, he can come back stronger after all this is over. Hopefully, his fans would write to him and still support him, I really feel he is remorseful.

And please do not confuse ppl saying the sentence is harsh with ppl feeling sorry for Mike. I dont feel sorry for him but they are trying to break him and that dose not sit well with me. The last time I checked Martha Stewart was still selling the shit out of some home decor. Did Kmart ask for all their money back? Did Macys think twice about putting her front and center in their Christmas ads? She is a convict and she served her time. Nobody tried to ruin her life and her future. They dont just want Mike to serve his time. They want him to be butt naked, broke as hell with no future means of support. And frankly, broke as a joke Mike, with no hope, scares me more than playing ball Mike.

As much as you want to holla - the white man, this is all about a Black man, a Black man who didn’t respect his GOD given talents and the opportunities that those talents afforded him. Ain’t no way in hell, he should have ever been in this situation to begin with. All of the worldly discussion about America not having their priorities straight, and not being fair and just when it comes to crime and punishment — That ain’t new. We know this, and there was probably not a lot Micheal Vick could do about the systemic racism in America - but he could do a lot about not being another Black man caught up in foolishness, breaking the law and going to jail.

You can talk all day, about whether dog fighting is any different from hunting bear, deer, or slaughtering animals for nourishment. All that matters, is that he broke the law. Once you do that and get caught, you put yourself at the mercy of someone else controlling your life and how you live.

Yes, Black men are typically judged much harsher and receive harsher penalties - that’s not right, but it’s not new. We all know that, we understand that, and until that changes or we make it change, we have to govern ourselves accordingly.

I believe he understands that he made some terriblde decisions and his judgement was flawed. I think he’s a good brother who made some bad choices. He is talented and I hope he gets every opportunity to get his life back together and get his livelihood back.

I support the brother - because we all make mistakes, and the best we can do is try and help one another recover when we do.

If you do the crime you do the time. Mike Vick should of have gotten more time.

Just because someone else out there has committed worse crimes does not mean you ignore the “smaller” crimes rather it is more heinous than the other one. Such ignorant thinking ….

So if one killer killed 5 people and another killer killed 3 does that mean the person who kills the 3 should get less of a sentence because he did not kill as many??????

@mizzlizz

In no way can I look at Mike Vick with malice because they are just dogs it maybe a bitter pill to swallow but they are just dogs.

I feel that do to Mike Vick’s high profile it put him on the Federal Governments radar and may have gotten them to take a case that they may normally not have taken. With that being said I feel that the judge went by the sentencing guidelines to the letter of the law because if he had strayed away from what others had received in similar cases it would have open the case up to possibility of the sentencing being appealed.

TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT MY MOUTH!

We ALL known Black people are treated unfairly and unjust in this country. So the bonus question is why do WE continue to do unintelligent acts? We know the consequences so what’s really good?

I am praising God that he did not get the maximum of 5 years.

Michael is perfect example of mistreatment of our law as well as many others. But whole thing is why jeopardize you career, freedom and reputation for making a quick buck in dog fighting? This man was already blessed and highly favored in is talent.

You sound like your getting “effin stupid” the crime was against a DOG not a HUMAN. The out from PETA and many others was on par if not worst then if it was murder. The war can be brought up because we have bigger thing to worry about. People know about this case but not the who Secretary of Defense is.

@coop1974a…. So who’s fault is it that Mike Vick choose to be in this situation? Is it the white man fault? He made his decision to participate no one held a gun to his head. When we make stupid decisions we have to suffer the consequences no matter how lenient or severe the consequences may be. Mike Vick actually committed a crime it does not matter if you say they were “just dogs”.

I am a dog owner and it saddens me to think that someone could do that to a defenseless animal. :( What else would he do for the sake of fun when he got bored with killing animals?

Oh PLEASE!!!!!!!!

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 /

I think it’s a cultural difference too. I grew up in the hood w/my grandma and in the suburbs w/my parents sometimes so I learned how to flip it. The way people view dogs is different. To some dog fighting is just a sport. I don’t do it, shoot I cant even really watch wrestling and boxing like talk about but the fact is people like like to see a fight. Now again, I’m no expert but I thought that the reason they kill those pitbull dogs is b/c once they fight they become too aggressive and could potentially be a danger to society? Does anybody know if that’s true?? If that’s the case than they should have been killed. And speaking of sports, don’t they shoot race horses when they can’t run no more? And let’s not even talk about the foolishness of spending over a million dollars to “rehabilitate” A DOG!!!!!!!!!! Just Foolish! I understand there are consequences and that’s it’s a law but I just don’t think jail time is necessary. Tell him he can’t own no more dogs . . . tell him he has to use his money to open up an SPCA . . . .If the issue is cruelty to animals make him do something that benifits the animals. Him sitting in jail for 6 months to 2 years and benefitting nobody.

Baffled!

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 /

First of all, you people act like you know all the facts in this case (You don’t!). I am amazed that everyone is talking about what he did when none of you were present. They (the police where this all went down) could not stand the fact that all these black folks were living it up in a pricey house, so they came to the conclusion that there had to be some kind of illegal activity going on. They say that they received an anonymous ‘tip’ to the drug activity (BOGUS). The fact is that the police went to his house because of a “drug bust”; funny thing is, there was no selling of drugs going on. Why has this information not been put out there like everything else! That was a total fabrication; an informant who used to hang out or work with the ‘Bad Newz Kennels’ reported the activity to the police (mind you that the person who informed the police of the kennel was in trouble for something else, so he gave them the info he had on Vick to get his ass out of trouble (allegedly). They saw all the dogs and went and ‘equipment’ for dog fighting (big chains hooked to bumpers, etc.) Then they went and got a search warrant and about a million law enforcement officers as reinforcement to raid the house ‘AGAIN’ to ‘rescue’ the poor dogs! I would just like to ask everyone to start thinking for themselves and stop taking everything that someone else says as ‘Fact’ or ‘Truth’. Can someone please answer this question for me: If Michael Vick was an NFL star who did not even live at the address, when did he have time to do all this torturing and electrocuting? I am not saying that he didn’t bankroll the operation, he may have even had input on which dogs he liked or disliked, but anyone with half a brain knows that he was not there for the day to day operation. The events as told by the prosecutors and media are always presented as “FACT” when they are just statements given by one side or another. Since when don’t people lie?!?!, especially to save their own ass. I think a lot of people are confused: he is in prison for ‘bankrolling’ an illegal activity (dogfighting) that crossed state lines (when they went to dogfighting contests in another state - somebody told the prosecutors that they heard someone else say his name at a dogfight in another state and they saw him hand the bag of money to another person who in turn gave the bag to the ‘winner’). Now people are going around saying that he should go to federal prison because he did something that is against the law. Let me tell you something, there are a lot of laws out there on the books that you have no idea about and if you break one of them and a hardnosed prosecutor finds it - you are in big trouble, because ignorance of the law is no defense!

you have to live by the law of the land , if not when you get caught your a$$ gets locked up. Did the crime…do the the time…..He knew he was breaking the law….he thought he was untouchable. He was greedy or was it just a matter thinking I can do what i want to do. either way it was stupid and foolish. Not only did you hurt yourself you hurt your family as well. Just plain stupid in my opinion. To me , the horrendous things he did to those dogs, he was easily just one step away from hurting an individual in such manners. The characteristics of a serial killers is first to hurt animals. Scary.

That is where do I believe that his being black comes into play. I think some people in position of power want to see Mike be in a worse position then he was before he ever signed any type of contract. I have also read articles that stated how the NFL is always checking up on star plays so that they can keep them out of trouble and clean up thier messes that they make so I find it hard to believe that the NFL did not know what he was doing.

Yes the crime had to do with gambling and was perpetrated against dogs but it was still a CRIME! Yes their might be other important issues going on right now but that does not negate the fact that what he did was illegal. The sentence was just. So what the media wasn’t supposed to talk about this case at all because their is a war going on? Maybe the amount of coverage that this story received was excessive but Vick’s punishment certainly was not.

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 /

To: YOUNGND. We are talking about dogs that are killers themselves, pitbulls. No poodles here. If you have a neighbor with a pit, jump the fence and play with him and see what the end result will be. You talking about cruel punishment to animals what about 400 years of cruelty to one race. Hell, if they gonna do right all the slave owners should have been hung or jailed for the crimes they committed against blacks before we were so called free with an unlevel playing field from the start. Yes, he did something stupid, we all have but does he deserve to go to jail for it. Kobe raped a trashy women and had scars and evidence against him ,and he’s still playing ball. R Kelly, just a sick man with young girls and he’s still touring. We are so critical of each other and especially famous blacks. When the spotlight are off of them, they are regular people (except for R Kelly he’s just sick), mortals created by God Almighty. I hope he realizes his mistakes and God never puts too much on us that we can’t handle or endue. I just hate to see any blacks male or female caged up like an animal for bullsh__t.
Keep your head up Mike. Your future is still ahead of you, whether you get a chance to ball or not, you are alive and that’s a gift itself. Peace Supreme!

I’m from the Caribbean and I love America but some of the laws are really absurd, and this case is a prime example. I agree that the laws should be adheared to and Michael Vick disobeyed them so he should suffer the consequnces, however it seems to me that some people are more concern about the inhumane treatment of dogs in the country, than they are of the human beings. There are all sorts of predators running around in the streets of the U.S. and other countries and I feel that the more important matters should be dealt with.

LOL, I just read someone else’s post and they said that their mom says that white people in America love their dogs so much.

My family is JA and my dad was like, the reason why he is going to jail is because white people worship dogs in America, lol lol HAH AHAHAHAHAHA

I’m like, but it’s fucking true. White man rules this damn country, and therefore, if you shoot the white man’s dog down….it’s like killing his bro. Man, I got TWO dogs that I love dearly with all my heart. They are like my fucking kids. But even I would not send a grown ass man to jail if he killed them…..I don’t give a damn like THAT. It’s fucking up someone’s freedom and shit…..all I would want is an even MORE expensive replacement and some mula for pain and suffering..you know, some ol Judge Mathis shit…lol, NOT JAIL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And like someone else said, it IS VERY FUCKED UP that the white man sits there and glamorizes hunting and butchering and all that crazy fucked up sadistic shit, and Mike is going to jail for some ol bullshit that is the SAME category as them. All cuz the nigga got caught…. (smh).

Yea, he shouldn’t have been spending his MILLIONS on that dumb stupid man stuff, but who the fuck REALLY cares? People do crazier things than that. Weny Williams said that Marilyn Manson requests bald hookers in his dressing room when he goes on tour….just IMAGINE what the fuck he does with his money…every last fucking celebrity should be put on blast then….

Yeah DON’T BE STUPID @73, etc (Yeah i have some more addressing to do); There are a lot of issues in this one story (Vick’s dog fighting case). The lesser of the many is him killing dogs (if he killed any, he took the plea U PENISES, “U will never know what he really did”). It’s a dog, be for real. Just because some law maker had sex with his dog some years ago (took a liking to the species) and gave them rights doesn’t mean that we have to be idiots about the facts.
But more important in the list of issues. Is the state and control over our struggle to be seen as a people and not sub-human. Despite our rise to fame and celebrity there are still many injustices of the black man happening in the world today. But in speaking of our crisis here in America. Its easy to divide us and here is a clear example I think the majority of folks don’t see Vick’s case as being so important to take his career and all he worked for from him. Thus why can’t we say what his punishment should had been. See I’m telling all you black folk that we have to start controlling our fates. In this world of manipulation we have to stick together like PETA. It kills me how we still after our history will turn our backs on this guy (our own) for hurting/killing some dogs. And most of them were treated very well. But they won’t tell that story. Our people ain’t shit! Instead of sending a productive black man to jail on a first offense over some dogs, one who was helping his community and who knows how many relatives and family. We should of fined him and made him give back to help who ever. Now if he hurt humans different story but it wasn’t humans. This was a modern day lynching and its sad that black folk were apart of it (they agreed hey broke the law). A law that in my mind is on the same line of raping a white woman in the 1930’s; if a white man did it, he went to court and was let off within an hour; if a black man did it, he went to jail and then a mob would come get him and put him on a tree and watch his life drip from his body until he was dead. At least there weren’t any of our own in the mob unlike in Vicks lynching. U dumb-asses! Nothing but MOBS-MEN

Vick’s Cousin pleads guilty to drug charges

Updated: Oct 3, 2007 09:13 PM EDT

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — The Michael Vick family member whose drug arrest led to the discovery of Vick’s dogfighting compound pleaded guilty today to possessing marijuana with intent to sell.

Davon Boddie is the cousin of the suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback. Boddie was given a five-year suspended sentence by in Hampton Circuit Court.

The 27-year-old used to live in the house owned by Vick in Surry County — site of Vick’s “Bad Newz Kennels” dogfighting operation. He now lives in Newport News.

Boddie was arrested April 20. The arrest led to the search of the Surry County property, where authorities found dozens of pit bulls and equipment commonly used in dogfighting.

Vick has since pleaded guilty to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge, and he faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced December 10th. He also has been indicted on state dogfighting charges.

I am not from this country so I apologize to all the PETA members and animal lovers but, seriously it was some DOGS some nasty but licking dogs WHO CARES. What about the horse we do an injustice to by racing them (legally, cause some lawmaker “AGAIN”, them summa-bidches) or that we put on city streets to pull us back and forth to weddings, funnels or through a damn park? cause guess what happens to them when they break a leg from the street, curb or getting hit by a car or just when they run into each other at the races. yawn, i’m not excusing white people, and i’m not ignorant to their actions against black men in this country. i’m from nyc, i’ve been exposed to more racism than you will ever know, especially by cops.

however, the problem here is that vick CHOSE to participate in something illegal. i mean, it’s not like he was taking out his wallet and got shot 42 times. that was an innocent man. vick is not innocent. whether his sentence is WAY TOO HARSH or not, is a different story.

@Yawm……I am Black, White & Indian. However what does that matter? If I break the law I should be punished as well. laws are put in place for a reason. THANKS. I see that you feel the need to insult everyone who disgress with you. You have the most wonderful day!

@ 80

I totally agree with you.

I thought I was the only one who didn’t feel sorry for him. Animals are LIVING creatures, they are created by GOD and they don’t deserved to be brutally killed in any way shape or form. It’s just not right and it makes me sick to my stomach. Hopefully he learned his lesson from all of this and will think twice before making his decisions.

23 months hmm, lets see he turned himself in early then theres always the “good behavior” release. So this equates to maybe no more that 8 months in my book, the rest will be probation. Dumb asses go to jail every day and even if he had to serve 23 months that aint shit! I got family doing major bids! He did the crime, he needs to serve his little ass time! He’ll be back. smh, if Ricky Williams can get 100 damn chances then so can M. Vick. Lets just hope that he’s learned his lesson.

@123: Who cares, this is not about you. You look like a white chick standing next to Vick. And that is not good.

@ 107: You implied that minorities should live less freely by stating this: “why are people bringing up all these other cases or the war in iraq like it matters. IF YOU KNOW YOU ARE BLACK OR HISPANIC OR A MINORITY PERIOD IN THIS COUNTRY, YOU KNOW YOU NEED TO TREAD LIGHTLY! ” And yes, all those other cases do matter. No one is supporting Vick per se. I’m just saying that if you think he deserves the time, you should be just as adamant in your outrage that these white guys are not serving time for the crimes they commit.

OK..he broke the law and got punished..such is life. My question is how the heck did he get arrested, tried, convicted and sentenced in less than a year and Mr.R. Kelly is still running all over the place and his case has yet to go to trial? I swear it has almost been 10 years. Vick you got what you deserved..you should have found some other way to spend the millions you make…bad..bad..decision man.
You should have hired Kelly’s lawyers..loll!!
Comments anyone?

@117: “Just because someone is Black and broke the law we are supposed support them because they are Black?”

First or all, people are more outraged by the inconsistency in leveling justice than they are showing support for Vick. Secondly, it depends. A couple years ago, if your father is indeed black, and he procreated with your mother to produce you, you would be considered the result of a crime in some states. I almost feel embarrassed to have to explain something so sophomoric. I knew there was no way on earth you’re a black person.

And for the people who are so outraged with whites getting lesser time when it comes to the court systems and blacks dealing with injustice everyday in the court room, let me ask you this, what exactly are you doing to help take a stand and make a difference??

IT SHOULDN’T BE A CRIME TO KILL AN ANIMAL UNLESS THE ANIMAL IS NEAR EXTINCTION….(JUST FOR PRESERVATION)

That’s right i said it. Otherwise let’s shutdown the slaughterhouses and farms. Cause dem kats are guilty as sin. If we can’t do that then FREE MIKE VICK.

@ Yawn……I never said that Blacks have equal rights when it comes the justice system I am not naive or ignorant to what goes on in our community. I am Black and I don’t need you to confirm my Blackness or give me a pass when whites look at me they consider me Black. When Blacks look at me they consider me mixed so its messed up all around.

If you know there are injustices in the legal system then why put your self in those types of predicaments? Please expound.

BTW I think you meant first of all.

@DOC… All Blacks should get a pass from all the crimes they commited because they are Black and the white man is trying to hold them down right? This is what you call having good logic. Let one of them kill someone you love then we will see who is logical then.

It’s funny how people believe they’re better than others just because they make mistakes. But hey, I guess some people are perfect and do everything the right way…Everyone should remember that there’s only one real judge and His name is God. Whatever other people think doesn’t matter. He’s apologized to his family and to those who care about him. He’s asked for God’s forgiveness and that’s the only thing that matters. Everyone makes mistakes, and you’re no better than him. You may not participate in dogfighting, but you participate in something that’s not right so you’re no better than he is or anyone else. Fans who have left him are not real fans and never should’ve been with him in the first place. Real talk

I’m not sure if I’m feeling upset about his sentence because there are dogs (and other animals) all over the world being killed to be eaten or because there are more important things going on in the world other than this. I understand that decisions that we make have consequences, but damn give the guy a break. I do sometimes wonder why would a man who has so much money need to do anything else to make more money. If he loves money that much why doesn’t he do what most celebritys do when they are getting broke to make a perfume or some clothes???? Just asking…..

i think it is sick and harsh. he lost his job behind this bull. i believe this was racial and all filled with hate and jealousy. peta is mostly white folks. they wanted vicks head. also other people white and others did not like the fact that a black man made money without selling drugs or knocking an old lady in the head. white america and others are livid about the fact that black athletes make mad dough. they were dogs not people. we need to take care of each other and make a big stink like this over domestoc violence, starvation, and also homelessness. pedophilia even. vick was used as an example. o.j. simpson and michaeal jackson got away with heinous crimes and are still walking the street.. i believe he was made a pawn in the judicial systems game. white america is tired of rich black folks getting away with crimes because they are rich. it is okay for rich white america to use their money and power to get them out of trouble. it is not okay for blacks because too many have gotten away. i love people more than animals. we need to treat each other better and maybe your family ,friends, spouse, and co-workers would be as loyal. we treat a dog better than each other. i think it is sick.putting an animal in the same position as a human. wtf???

It kills me how some black people use the race card for anything. What Micheal Vick did was wrong and he should be punished for it. I bet that if he never got caught he would still be doing the same things today. It wasn’t like Micheal was driving down the street in a fancy car and was pulled over by the police and got beat up for being black. What he did was illegal and it’s funny how some black people try to justify it by comparing it to other crimes. Or saying that it was the white man trying to bring him down. Micheal Vick, TI, R. Kelly all of them committed illegal crimes and should get into trouble for it. I’m tired of some black people thinking that they should get away with crimes because they black celebrities.

The sad thing isnt what Vick did its the sentencing rules America uses to target activities that specific races are active in…. Dog fighting.. WRONG… but do you know the sentences for poaching? how about probation and a 2000 fine… How about the sentencing for killing endangered species for absolute profit. How about white collar crime laws? I get in more trouble stealing a candy bar then siphoning millions. Go watch Animal Planet and check out all the dog fighting cases. They dont even go after half of them, they are far more concerned about the animals.. If Vick wasnt a black celebrity we wouldnt even have this talk. Its ok to Cock Fight, Geez even the Popular “Pokemon” is simply finding creatures and training them to fight each other ” Its ok to be a millionaire and pay for alaskan expeditions and shoot things and bring heads home to place on top of my fireplace for the sheer pleasure of killing and bragging of the beast I took life from, oh yeah they kill greyhounds and horses too right after they stop being fast enough to entertain their white owners… OOPS did I say that. I hope The Man doesnt trace my IP and penalize me.
