He truly deserved that sentence and much more! Animals should not be subjected to this type of cruel punishment. The fact that any animal had to die to promote illegal activity is even more disturbing. It also troubles me to see a young African-American athlete fall from grace as painfully as he did. He had the fame, the glory, and the major endorsement deals. His improper decision making skills have disappointed his family, friends, and the fans in general. He has endangered the status of the African-American quarterback indeed. Hopefully, young African-American athletes will learn from his tragic mistake and disappointing decision making skills.

There is no doubt in my mind that dog fighting is wrong. My issue with this is that it really feels like more value is placed on an animals life than a humans. If you can receive 23 months for killing dogs then EVERY killer regardless of the circumstances should be given life from the gate. Dog fighting is a multi million dollar underground enterprise but the first time it is a national issue, the first time it is a problem is when someone stumbles upon something in THIS mans home. I just know the DA was like oh yeah we got one we got a big case this is gonna make headlines! Other than that we have to stop putting ourselves in vulnerable situations. We are not above the law no matter how much money we earn, how much money we earn for others, how many tickets we sell, how many people think we are great. We are always on the radar, always one step from being the next joke, the next disapointment.

I think it was the Falcons owner who was on the pregame show saying that its def not out of the question that Mike could play again just not anytime soon. I agree with Micheal Vick’s sentence what he did was wrong and he should suffer the consequences of his actions. Dogfighting is not only illegal but it takes a very cruel person to do something like that. I know exactly what you mean @ 44. Your logic makes perfect sense. I think what people are having trouble wrapping their minds around is actually sitting in the presence of the cruelty day after day. Dogs and weak puppies gurgling for air, tying a noose around a living breathing thing and watching it gasp for air and expire. There is a humane way to use the resources put on this earth, but some cattle handlers are abusive, absolutely. Dogs are household pets in the United States, as there is a strict fine in some countries for hurting cows.

As far as Vick being set up as an example and given a stiff punishment because he’s black — I’m all for equality and hope that one day the US gets there, but we’re not there now. Greetings! Okay, this is my first time commenting on a post. (Please respond gently..:) )I have been an avid reader for about 6 mths now..so there is a first time for everything.

One thing that I think that a lot of ppl forget (or don’t know) is that dogfighting is taken SO seriously in this country because of the other crimes that are financed through this “sport”. All in all, Michael wasn’t sent to jail for 23 years just for killing some dogs, but he was contributing to an ongoing cycle of violence. He also lied (he’s fortunate that he wasn’t under oath). Hopefully there will be more arrest to come for participants.

Secondly, I was always taught as a child that if a person is hateful enough to kill a dog, then they will kill anything (or anyone). I’m not saying that Vick would end up being a serial killer, but it’s just a thought.

Lastly, (and I promise this is it..I’m getting sleepy.lol.) one thing that I have noticed about this subject and other subjects posted is the blame game among some of my fellow readers. PEOPLE..we cannot bring back all of our faults to the “white man” or “they are out to get us”. Just for the record Vick’s harsh punishment has nothing to do with dogs. The feds could care less about dogs and animal rights. He got all that time because of the illegal gambling ring which involved the killing of dogs, which is also illegal. Had he just been electrocuting dogs n shit he would have gotten community service and slapped with some therapy, but he used it in organized multi-million gambling institution–that is why he is serving nearly 2 yrs. The same time would have been applied to any sort of illegal gambling.

As far as the sentence goes I don’t think it’s a bad sentence compared to what they were trying to give him in the first place. I do think what he did was dumb and he should’ve re-evaluated his lifestyle and the consequences of things. MIchael Vick was sentenced to 23 months under the federal sentencing guidelines. The federal
Bureau of Prisons (BOP) gives an inmate 15% off if he does good time (causes no trouble. ) So that knocks his time down to about 19 months and change. Under BOP rules, he goes to a halfway house his last six months, so with the one month already served, he should end up spending ’bout one year in prison. It is extremely likely will be placed in a federal prison camp — and my clients tell me its easy time. In the end, the punishment isn’t all that much. Inmates are required to find work while in the halfway house; maybe his work could be training camp.

I don’t agree with y’all who discount what Vick did with “it’s just dogs.” The thing is this. It’s mean. What Vick and his friends did was deliberatedly cause pain to a living creature. That can make a person callous, and he can begin to discount suffering in people as well. Frivolously causing pain is never right.

I don’t think it’s over for Vick. I think he can come back and show us all the good in him. He’s a hella athlete and somebody’s gonna give him another chance.

Yes, Black men are typically judged much harsher and receive harsher penalties - that’s not right, but it’s not new. We all know that, we understand that, and until that changes or we make it change, we have to govern ourselves accordingly.

I believe he understands that he made some terriblde decisions and his judgement was flawed. I think he’s a good brother who made some bad choices. He is talented and I hope he gets every opportunity to get his life back together and get his livelihood back.

In no way can I look at Mike Vick with malice because they are just dogs it maybe a bitter pill to swallow but they are just dogs.

I feel that do to Mike Vick’s high profile it put him on the Federal Governments radar and may have gotten them to take a case that they may normally not have taken. With that being said I feel that the judge went by the sentencing guidelines to the letter of the law because if he had strayed away from what others had received in similar cases it would have open the case up to possibility of the sentencing being appealed.

First of all, you people act like you know all the facts in this case (You don’t!). I am amazed that everyone is talking about what he did when none of you were present. They (the police where this all went down) could not stand the fact that all these black folks were living it up in a pricey house, so they came to the conclusion that there had to be some kind of illegal activity going on. They say that they received an anonymous ‘tip’ to the drug activity (BOGUS). The fact is that the police went to his house because of a “drug bust”; funny thing is, there was no selling of drugs going on. Why has this information not been put out there like everything else! That was a total fabrication; an informant who used to hang out or work with the ‘Bad Newz Kennels’ reported the activity to the police (mind you that the person who informed the police of the kennel was in trouble for something else, so he gave them the info he had on Vick to get his ass out of trouble (allegedly). They saw all the dogs and went and ‘equipment’ for dog fighting (big chains hooked to bumpers, etc.) Then they went and got a search warrant and about a million law enforcement officers as reinforcement to raid the house ‘AGAIN’ to ‘rescue’ the poor dogs! I would just like to ask everyone to start thinking for themselves and stop taking everything that someone else says as ‘Fact’ or ‘Truth’. Can someone please answer this question for me: If Michael Vick was an NFL star who did not even live at the address, when did he have time to do all this torturing and electrocuting? I am not saying that he didn’t bankroll the operation, he may have even had input on which dogs he liked or disliked, but anyone with half a brain knows that he was not there for the day to day operation. The events as told by the prosecutors and media are always presented as “FACT” when they are just statements given by one side or another. Since when don’t people lie?!?!, especially to save their own ass. I think a lot of people are confused: he is in prison for ‘bankrolling’ an illegal activity (dogfighting) that crossed state lines (when they went to dogfighting contests in another state - somebody told the prosecutors that they heard someone else say his name at a dogfight in another state and they saw him hand the bag of money to another person who in turn gave the bag to the ‘winner’). I’m from the Caribbean and I love America but some of the laws are really absurd, and this case is a prime example. I agree that the laws should be adheared to and Michael Vick disobeyed them so he should suffer the consequnces, however it seems to me that some people are more concern about the inhumane treatment of dogs in the country, than they are of the human beings. HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — The Michael Vick family member whose drug arrest led to the discovery of Vick’s dogfighting compound pleaded guilty today to possessing marijuana with intent to sell.

Davon Boddie is the cousin of the suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback. Boddie was given a five-year suspended sentence by in Hampton Circuit Court.

The 27-year-old used to live in the house owned by Vick in Surry County — site of Vick’s “Bad Newz Kennels” dogfighting operation. He now lives in Newport News.

Boddie was arrested April 20. The arrest led to the search of the Surry County property, where authorities found dozens of pit bulls and equipment commonly used in dogfighting.

Vick has since pleaded guilty to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge, and he faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced December 10th. He also has been indicted on state dogfighting charges.

Dogfighting is cruel, and since dogs are domesticated animals, we can not look at them the same as we do non-domesticated animals, simply because non-domesticated animals don’t kill or harm for no reason. Dog’s in a dog fight are going against their natural instincts (because they are domesticated) to harm one another. In order for that to be possible, they must endure a great deal of cruelty from the time that they are born. It’s sad, but Vick should have gotten the full 5 years.

He will be in great debt by the time he gets out of prison and at 30 years old, football may be out of the question.

The point of this whole Michael Vick issue is not whether or not he was guilty or that he should be imprisoned. The white man’s legal system has already ascertained that. The crux is black people’s natural distrust for the white man (rightfully) and how he chooses to interpret and enforce his laws subjectively. Anyone can say that “it is against the law, so he should be thrown in jail”. The white man can pass a law tomorrow that says that it is illegal to wear red and certain negroes will not question it because it is “The Law”.

I notice that many black people have noticed that whites have an unnatural fascination with dogs. There is a spiritual justification for this. Caucasian people have always been infatuated with dogs because they trace their heritage to dogs, i.e. Romulus, Remus, the lupercalia, and the she-wolf. Even in ancient Greece, they had the werewolf stories etc. Black people should never expect whites to be anywhere near as passionate in enforcing the rights of the races that they oppress as they are of protecting th rights of dogs. They view their dogs as an actual relative and sometimes sex partner. The caucasians; known in the Bible as Esau, Edom, or the edomites, were identified metaphorically as dogs (Psa 22:16, 59:5,6). In Psa 22:16 when it speaks of the “dogs that compassed me” it was prophecy referring to the caucasian Romans that surrounded Christ as he was put up on the cross. In the scriptures Christ mocked the white woman that asked him to save her daughter by calling her a “dog”, before finally healing her daughter after she acknowledged her status as a dog (Matt 15:21-28, Mark 7:24-29).

It’s highly unlikely Vick will be out in a year due to the fact that on a 23 month sentence he really only has to serve around 19 months due to the good conduct credit time off that he gets. He also has to be designated to an insitution, be deemed RDAP eligible, and then wait for a spot in an RDAP class. All that takes time. He may not even start a program for 2-3 months as the classes are usually booked up months in advance. So, by the time he hits an RDAP yard, he’ll be down to 16 months left, then the BOP will credit him for the month he’s already been in. The program itself takes 9 months to complete, that leaves 7 months, and he has to spend 6 months in custody at a halfway house as a program requirement. So maybe he’ll get all of a month off. BIG DEAL!
