What you’re seeing with both Beyonce and Kelly are elements of Destiny’s Child…the only difference are poor, surface distinctions: Beyonce ditched her mom’s designs and begin incessantly wearing high-end wares (while Keylly is often still photographed in House of Dereon and other Tina Knowles creations) and Beyonce’s borrowed from Amerie with the gogo (while Kelly drifted into a more alternative sound). But the truth as to why Kelly isn’t working is this: You’re looking and Kelly and you can blatantly see that she’s trying too hard…and for what? what is she even singing about? Work it? Like this? Ghetto? You’re actually listening to her, to the vapid lyrics and you actually pay attention to the dancing…she’s trying too hard, you think…she’s flailing like a cat on fire, pumping and a’ bumping like Diana Ross said. And, it’s all too much…of nothing. It’s not woking. The reality, Kelly, is it’s not working because it’s you. And, it won’t even work for you because NOBODY really wants to look like you. Beyonce works because, for her, it’s just the opposite: “WE” want to look like her. And, this desire to look like her, this desire for her imbues her with this sort of might, omnipotence, really…it makes her indefatigable to “us,” because, let’s face it, only a thriftless romantic would imagine that “we” could extinguish “our” desire to look like her.

Nope, I been put my money where my mouth was…. I got both albums and I been eyeing Kelly since back when they was on “Straight from tha Streetz” with D-SOLO, so I know she is a talented chick. Bump all the superficial stuff like a new haircut or her look… Kelly does indeed need to take a risk not to sell but to just validate her own star….She belongs on the charts and she will continue to get better and better.
I truly wonder how much of her efforts consist of “yeah that will be good, but i can’t do it because people might think i’m copying”. I hope we all realize we aren’t in an age of innovation and every idea is inspired by others.
