In the wake of someone allegedly shooting at Jamaal Tinsley Sunday in Indiana and Sean Taylor’s recent murder – as well as this summer’s home invasions of Antoine Walker and Eddy Curry – it’s understandable to wonder about the danger of being a professional athlete.
Athletes are often criticized for carrying guns, but are these examples why they feel the need to carry?
Could athletes eliminate much of the threat by better picking the company they keep and choosing where (or where not to) go at night? Is it even fair to ask athletes to stay away from clubs?
Is it fair to ask them to leave their friends behind? The same people who cared and believed in them before they became successful? Unfortunately, yes. Anyone who is successful will tell you firsthand that with success, change has to occur. In my estimation that is why most people aren’t successful. They are afraid of change.
In religion they call it blocking your blessings. In sports, it’s called knowing your personnel.
Some people are actually afraid of success because success sometimes requires you to remove yourself from familiar surroundings. Who doesn’t want to be in a place that everybody knows your name?
It’s the same reason why an abusive couple stays together. They’re afraid not of the consequences of their current problems, but what will happen if they do change.
In today’s society, having a gun in the house is acceptable, in my opinion. But if you’re going out and risking your multimillion-dollar livelihood in the less-controlled environment of the streets, you might want to consider hiring a bodyguard.
I totally understand that random stuff happens and that most players and other successful people are targets. But we increase our chances of becoming a target based on whom we hang with and where we go.
Are you more prone to run into trouble if you’re a regular attendee of strip clubs and night clubs, and you have a crew of friends that can’t adapt to your success? Yes! That’s where the madness happens.
I’m not saying that you have to stay home and be a hermit, but you do need to be selective. And even then you can still have problems. The key is bringing along friends who can adjust to your success.
Everyone in rap music screams, “Keep it real!” But do you honestly think Jay-Z has every member of the Marcy Projects still hanging with him? Do you really think that all of Michael Jordan’s crew from Wilmington, N.C., was sitting in Chapel Hill when he went to college? Or, for that matter, now sitting in one of his mansions?
With success comes change, and that change sometimes involves selecting better company. There’s an endless list of superstars, including Mike Tyson, Pacman Jones and Michael Vick, who haven’t been able to make wise decisions. That’s because they’re too concerned with trying to “keep it real.”
I have a new philosophy: Keep it right. It’s one thing to become successful. It’s another thing to maintain that success.

Last of 3 Vick co-defendants sentenced; Tony Taylor gets 2 months in prison

RICHMOND, Va. – The man who provided prosecutors most of the information that led to Michael Vick’s downfall was sentenced to two months in prison Friday for his role in the NFL star’s dogfighting ring.
Tony Taylor of Hampton helped establish Vick’s “Bad Newz Kennels” operation and joined in killing dogs but later became the government’s chief informant in the case, prosecutor Michael Gill said at Taylor’s 10-minute sentencing hearing.
“He was the most significant source of information in this case,” Gill told U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson. “He did not hesitate in any way.”
Gill said it would have taken the government significantly longer to build a case against Vick and his three co-defendants had it not been for Taylor, who provided details of more than half of the “overt acts” outlined in the indictment.
Vick, who financed the operation, was sentenced Monday to 23 months in prison for a dogfighting conspiracy. Purnell Peace of Virginia Beach and Quanis Phillips of Atlanta previously were sentenced to 18 months and 21 months, respectively.
Gill asked Hudson to sentence Taylor only to probation because of his co-operation. Hudson agreed that Taylor was entitled to some leniency, but he said he did not believe such a “gross disparity” in sentencing between Taylor and the other defendants was appropriate.
“You were as much an abuser of animals as any other defendant in this case,” Hudson said.
Taylor apologized for his crime.
“I realize those were inhumane and stupid decisions I did make,” Taylor told the judge.
Taylor’s lawyer, Stephen A. Hudgins, urged Hudson to consider Taylor’s good behaviour since leaving the dogfighting enterprise in 2004.
“He left behind everybody involved with that and did not get back involved in that activity,” Hudgins said.
All four men initially pleaded not guilty. Taylor changed his plea on July 30 and agreed to co-operate with the government in its prosecution of the others. Peace and Phillips soon changed their pleas as well, and Vick followed suit on Aug. 23.
Taylor scouted for a location for the dogfighting operation in 2001 and recommended a six-hectare tract in Surry County, in rural southeastern Virginia. Vick paid about US$34,000 for the property the following year.
In a summary of facts that accompanied his plea agreement, Taylor said he maintained and trained the dogs for about three years. He admitted executing two dogs, shooting one and electrocuting the other, when they did not perform well in test fights.
Vick received a harsher sentence than Peace and Phillips after Hudson concluded that the suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback lied about his direct involvement in killing dogs and about his marijuana use, which was detected in a drug test.
Taylor said he left the operation after a falling out with Phillips and others.
I just don’t like the dress, period. Neither, although the ladies who are wearing them are very pretty.

hmm?..wow this post got crazy up in here!..as mush as like Keri I’m going to say that Genevieve rock’d it better and they only reason I say this is because the dress is bland itself so it needed some acessories and that’s what Genevieve did..I liked the leopard althought it was off..lol..Keri is still new to the game as far as being an artist so she needs to work on her poses and find her individual style..but I see so much potential in my girl Keri..she is gorgoeus, talented, and has a likeable personality but when it comes to style she could get a lost..lol..but much success to both women doing it in the fashion/entertainment industry

haha not only is genevieve dress see through but that’s straight off the runway and dolce and gabanna inteded that dress to be worn with the belt as seen on the runway. for those knocking genjo’s weight. the girl never changed a pound since she’s a teen and thank god she’s not out there enhancing her breast’s, wearing white girl weaves or getting a nose job like most black celebs do to try to be more accepted in society. she’s muscular and skinny, a lot of sisters are built like her, doesn’t mean she doesn’t eat, it means she has a fast metabolism. and all of you must take pictures, haven’t you ever had a bad picture taken from a bad angle. her face wasn’t burned, she has flawless skin, rarely wears any makeup and obviously doesn’t give a fuck. and for those who don’t know, she’s a jewelry designer and well on to becoming extremely successful. i don’t see her as a socialite, she’s a fashion icon and there hasn’t been a black one in quite some time. and yes like most of the other commenters, she wore that dress better than other homegirl by a billion times. no comparison. genevieve has class, talent and as rumor goes a wild party side she obviosly has under control because i see her at the gym almost every day. oh and doesn’t have a stylist or a publicist and she put her look together on her own in her own way. i’m sure the singer had a team of people make her look just average and safe in that cheap looking slip underneath
