I’m J. Dakar and, as the new political contributor at Concrete Loop, I will be hooking you up with social and political commentary, mainly focusing on the 2008 presidential election.

Born in Florida and raised in Alabama, I am a true southern gentleman majoring in business administration with a minor in political science and a Distinction in Leadership Studies at Birmingham-Southern College.

I am a member of the Board of Directors at AIDS Alabama and volunteer with the Spinal Cord Opportunities for Rehabilitation Endowment (SCORE).

I formerly served as president of the Black Student Union and co-coordinator of Amnesty International on campus and as state coordinator for the George Phillies presidential campaign.

When I’m not devoting my time and energy to a cause, you can possibly find me working on my skills in the kitchen or mellowing out with music, approximately 75 GB of it. I have been writing online since May of 2001 and have had a passion for politics even longer.

Glad to see CL is taking a step in the right direction and adding a new Political contributer… all Black gossip blogs need to focus more attention on the election because this is one of the most imporatant elections in our lifetime… our nation could have it’s very first African American or Female president… CL is coming correct in 08, you guys are my favorite gossip blog!

Angel,

I also want to commend you on being a visionary. Celebrity blogs are here to stay…whether celebrities like it or not. The minute mainstream media began to “credit” blogs and bloggers for breaking stories and using them as sources in their print publications, I knew something was happening. I mean Perez Hilton has his own reality show and was a co-host on the View. I couldn’t believe it. But I think the more prominent these sites become, there will be a separation b/w the “legitimate” ones (like CL) and the bogus ones( I could name many). And the legitimate ones will be profitable.

I commend you, Brian, and Tianna for boosting the credibility of your site by checking sources, placing value-added content, and it doesn’t hurt when a celeb like Kanye West digs your site.

Again, congrats on your foresight and keep up the good work. It’s always good to see black young people making their own way without bouncing a ball or rapping (no offense to the rappers or the b-ball players)

I am glad to see this move by Concreteloop. Although, I love getting a dose of daily laughter, I am more interested in the issues that will ultimately have an impact on our lives. To introduce an educated African-American male whose focal point is on political information and progress, allows others to wakeup and see that we are so much more than the appointed title of rapper and thug.

Congrats to you and to the entire Concreteloop family.

This should be a nice addidtion. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican, young people must get involved in the political process. All that has been gained in the last 40-50 is in danger of being taken away, from right to vote, assemble and protest, speech, et al. Jenna 6 was an excellent example of activism can achieve (although the leaders wilted like old lettuce, over money of course).
Lay the info on the line, young brother.

Good addition to Concrete Loop. I am going to be honest, I stopped commenting on your blog because it was getting juvenille with no substance. For example, weaves, makeup, and attire of the celebrities. Maybe this can be the outreach to the younger generation to be more mndful of things that will affect our future. Thank you staff for a marvelous addition to your site.

Thanks for the love, guys (and girls). It is much appreciated, as is this great opportunity to be a part of this movement with Angel, Brian and Tianna.

#22: I had considered law school, but I am in the process of applying to Teach for America after graduation. As long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a lawyer. You can read more about that here.

#27: What would you say if it were? Nah, I’m kidding; I’m, perhaps, one of the nicest guys you’ll meet, but I look like I would probably beat you down & think nothing of it.

#56: I certainly hope so.

#75: Yeah, I’ve heard that…along with Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Shane Battier. I think it also has something to do with my height.

#77: I’ll try.

#82: I plan to be as unbiased as possible and offer little or no indication as to whom I might be voting for in November. I, too, am a little concerned about that, but I hope that my words can garner as much appeal as my face.

Peace and blessings,
J. Dakar

Teach for America is a Great program and a wonderful way to give back & pay off those Student loans at the same time (I assume you have student loans).

I read your piece and I always wanted to be a lawyer too, but after I attended Law School I initially had regrets because I realized that I was more personally fulfilled in other areas besides the practice of law. However, I did it and it cannot be taken away from me. If I hadn’t gone I would have always been saying “what if.” So, I say all that to say…definitely follow your dreams, but there is nothing like knowing your purpose and being fulfilled by what you do. That way it never ever feels like a job. I can tell you already know this though! ;)

Sorry to go on a personal rant, but again…WELCOME!!!

Oh, and just wanted to say on a serious note that this is a good addition, especially to a black blog because black people are often uninformed or misinformed when it comes to politics or a politician’s position on a issue, and therefore are reluctant to vote for fear they may make a situation worse, or vote for superficial reasons.

I think this will be good, especially since there is an election upon us, and some issues and political stance should be clarified. And whereas black people probably would not have taken the time to research a issue or their politician of choice position on a matter, they can come here and get a overview (while getting the latest celeb gossip) and actually be able to articulate the depth of the reason for their vote.

Good Look CL..

But i wasn’t kidding though, step lightly, cause you will get your ass cursed out on this bitch……lol

9 times out of 10? Please explain the logic. Better yet, nevermind, lol. I guess having a plan and being active and educated in things not associated with hip-hop demasculinates or makes men homos. By your bold assumption and lack of confidence in black men…were doomed, lol!

However, I think this is definitely a good plan for CL. @104- there are clearly people on here who have the interest and the knowledge to discuss issues more complex than the everyday celebrity fashions. People have been asking for more substantive issues and now that Angel and the crew has delivered, let’s not be negative - let’s open our minds to new subjects and actually try to learn from Dakar and each other. We’re going to need it heading into these elections. There are a lot of issues that we should school ourselves on. Come up, black people. Come on up!

I for one am particuarly pleased and impressed with this new addition to the Loop team. As the UK is an ally of the US we recieve regular coverage of US politics particulary during election time. Over the past year with all the hoopla surrounding the imprending elections I have been concerned and alarmed by the comments regarding the presidential hopefuls by African Americans on the blogs. Now that the Loop has added this feature to the site I will be checking it more reguarly in the hope to learn new things and to get another perspective on US Politics…

This is awesome! I am so glad that CL will be keeping up the comings and goings of this election season. We need only look to Pakistan and Kenya to know that elections have CONSEQUENCES! I believe that the IOWA Caucuses will settle absolutely nothing so African American voters in South Carolina may very well be deciding the outcome of at least the democratic nomination. Thanks for engaging!

#104: I agree that a gossip blog is not the best place to get this kind of information, but Concrete Loop is not a gossip blog. Concrete Loop is a black entertainment blog that offers celebrity news and photos, in addition to new music and now, social and political commentary. I commend you for using “more credible sources” and I urge everyone to do the same. I also urge everyone to take everything they see, read and hear with a bit of suspicion. Inform yourselves of what’s going on around you with numerous sources and always remember to, in the words of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ernest Gaines, “Question everything. Every stripe, every star, every word spoken. Everything.”

#150: I fully understand where you’re coming from with your statement. I, too, struggled with that very same notion for years before I even joined the BSU because I had always sought student groups that welcomed everyone (That’s not to say the BSU doesn’t welcome everyone). In fact, I organized SERCH (Students for the Establishment of Racial & Cultural Harmony) during my senior year of high school to advocate unity within diversity and allow students the opportunity to take a stand to impact the world. Once I joined the BSU, though, I sought an executive position so that I could work to ensure that although the focus of the organization is on black culture, the BSU is not an institution for division of the campus community. The organization is inclusive and welcomes all students, regardless of race or ethnicity.

To all the lovely ladies:
I sincerely appreciate the kind remarks on my appearance, but I hope that my words can garner as much appeal as my face. I will mention that I am single and heterosexual, not that it really matters too much because I am here to do a job.

If I happen to make a few friends (or enemies, I should also mention), so be it, but my first priority is offering you pertinent social and political commentary so that you can take that information and research the topic more in-depth on your own and be made even more aware of the world in which we live.

This is a wonderful step for The Loop. I hope this will help to reach people who normally would not pay attention to politics. Many of us still do not realize how important political participation is and the implications are becoming increasingly dire. We all love our gossip and celebrity news, but I think that it is fantastic that The Loop has recognized the need to feed us some substance also.

Oprah is NOTHING but a aunt jemima with southern roots who KNOWS HER PLACE IN THE WHITE MAN’S WORLD. She knows what to do EVEN before they direct her. She is completely indoctrinated into the slave mentality, as MOST southerners. That’s why she makes white folks millionaires with their stupid books and stupid products, but can only give black people education (tools to make them better slaves to the white man).

When Obama first won his senate race, she proposed right on TV, as programmed by her massah, that he run for president. He said a firm “No” and saracastically replied, “why don’t you run.” His wife looked alarmed at the thought. So when he started running I knew that the Aunt Jemima had done her job of producing a black candidate to improve the rascist white america’s image in the world community, and to produce the weakest democractic candidate possible to run against the republican Huckabee.

HUCKABEE WILL BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. CLICK ON THE LINK AND SEE WHERE HE STANDS ON THE ISSUES THAT AFFECT YOU. IT AIN’T PRETTY. BLACKS AND GAYS WILL BE TAKEN DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, AS CLOSE TO SLAVERY AS THEY CAN GET. MOCK MY WORDS.

Dear J. Dakur or anyone else: I work at a financial establishment where there are a mixture of black, white and spanish. Oneday last week at lunch, one of my spanish co-workers arrogantly said that she felt the spanish culture is closer than the black culture. She couldnt even give legit reasoning and right away as a proud black woman I felt offended, but to my suprise a black man that I worked with totally aggreed with her and added by saying that black people have no culture. I was battling with not only someone of a opposite culture but also a black man of the same culture as myself…I couldnt believe it. I felt so betrayed by him and I was also embarassed that we shared the same race. It is bad enough that there are so many stereotypes about the black race, but its’ bad enough when we add to the delemia ourselves. If we are divided as a race then I feel it is our own fault, but I wouldnt dare give another race the satisfaction of aggreeing with their negative views. I do believe the black race could be a little tighter, but I dont feel comfortable discussing this amongst another race. Then again I also feel this is based on the individual. What do u think about what my co-workers said?

@175

I do feel like our community lacks unity. And while him publicly agreeing with her may have caused you to feel some type of way…remember to never let them see you sweat, lol. Seeing how there is some truth to it, you probably should have just let it roll off your back, taking comfort in the fact that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Now, what gets me is that he said African Americans dont have culture. That’s insane and ignorant. It’s funny that you even said that because I had honestly been thinking about that lately. And there is only one group of people who I can honestly say I believe lack cutlure. Or perhaps we should all look up the definition of “culture” and go from there. Maybe I’ll do that now…

Thanks 177 for your response. I know this isnt a Dear Abby column but I appreciated your words. I think alot of black people lack pride in where we come from and what we see in the mirror…some of us are wishing our hair was straighter and butts were smaller. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I felt my spanish co-worker was dispresecting me and basically saying that she felt spanish people were better than black people. I felt it was my responsibility to stand up for my culture. There was no way I could just say nothing. Besides she could have kept that to herself also.

180.

Cmeez

Friday, January 4, 2008 /

J. Dakar,

I”ll be honest and say that I am more of a visual person than a reader…but I did read the article and you were all over the place about Obama “Victory”speech etc.. I expect a political blogger to represent all candidates (except the Republicans.) Just because Obama is black, which is still up for debate… Does not mean that all Blacks should support him. That’s the problem with our culture today we are so stuck on the appearance more than the substance of a person. I just feel you should introduce all candidates allowing the readers to make a clear choice about the candidate that best represents their core beliefs. It is sad to see this election thus far, going to heck because of two states when the remainder of the country has not even voted…and Obama and Edwards, that was disgusting how they played that tag team game with Hillary. I am a great judge of character, watch that debate again, Obama looked at Edwards as a blessing because he said everything that he could not say, for fear of looking negative.

My bad on rambling but I would like to see Hillary posted as well.

Mr. J. Dakar,

Thank you for your wonderful contribution (so far and your future endeavors) to our community, political arena, and society.

I see you are very focused (not easily swayed by the ladies’ comments), straight-forward, and conscientious. I eagerly await your blogs/commentaries/viewpoints; I believe this forum is long overdue.

I must say, not only am I impressed by your education and community relations; your kitchen skills (yet to be proven) and music collection (75GB?) show true commitment and dedication. I am sure there is some great jazz (Coltrane, Klugh, Miles, Nagee, Boney James, David Sanborn) within your vast accumilation.

I wish you much success, peace, and love.
