♫ Alice Smith – Dream

Alice Smith may not be new to some CL visitors but nevertheless she deserves a spotlight. The NYC-based singer has been making waves since late ’06 when she released her debut album , For Lovers, Dreamers & Me. Rolling Stone listed her as one of the ’10 Artists to Watch in 2006′ and just last month she was honored with a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Urban/Alternative Performance’.

Her music is often described as a Soul/Rock/Pop blend but Alice has an array of musical influences including: Go-Go, Country, Classic Rock, R&B, Blues, Jazz and Gospel music. In the early 2000s, while she was wrapping up her studies at Fordham University, she sang with Greg Tate’s improv band, Moomtez, that drew upon a broad range of influences and was a part of the Black Rock Coalition.

Love Alice Smith! Her voice is really incredible live…My favorite part of “Dream” is at the 3:51 mark. Good looking, Brian and CL.

You guys have been sleepin’ if you haven’t heard of Alice by now. I’ve had her CD for a couple of months (I bought it from iTunes). Her voice is amazing and her CD is a non-skip one, love every song. You should definitely check her out!

  3. PMel8701

Her voice reminds me of Chrisette Michelle…She sounds good though..

  4. GIna

I love this song. Beautiful and O-R-I-G-I-N-A-L. I am so ready for something new.

  5. I’ve been feeling her music for a minute. I don’t understand why people are comparing her to Alicia Key’s though? I think some people need more musical references in their rolodex – these two sound nothing alike. And when did Alicia Keys become some vocal powerhouse to compare other artist too?

  6. Fl Gurl

SHe looks like Kerry Washington from that angle.

  7. Lori

Wow thank you concreteloop. I came across her myspace page a while ago but forgot all about her. I’m so glad you posted information about her, I’m on itunes listening to her album and love her! I’m going to buy this…I’m so mad I’m late on her, I’m never late on hot artists lol!

I LOVE MS. SMITH. I’m always looking for new, refreshing talent and luckily my friend put me on to her a while back. Cope the cd after searching frantically everywhere and never been happier. Like many people said, “Do I” is definitely one of my favorite joints off the album. “Fake is the new Real” as well, because it doesn’t get any truer than that.

  9. Ja

It’s about time somebody mentioned Alice Smith. Her album is more than great. I’ve been listening to it for over a year now.

  10. AnastasiaMarie

Alice’s music is so hot! She provides what the music industry needs-originality.

  11. Van

I like it. Kudos to her for getting a nomination. Her voice is strong without all the yelling.

  13. afrobella

hey! Alice Smith is awesome. Nice to see her featured on the Loop, I hope this opens her talent up to a lot more people. I love Dream, and Do I is the JAM!

  14. Sag1970

Never heard of her either but it’s refreshing and different this song is different and i like it. I agree #42, someone with something to say other than that Beyonce Cookie cutter B.S. it gets so old.

  15. AXIS

Came across this artist on itunes a few times but never checked her out… maybe i should.

  16. Sag1970

    LMAO@66!!!!

I know right, it’s like comparing apples and oranges!!! A Keys is no powerhouse vocalist that’s fo sho, not hating but she’s overrated IMO. I

  17. Nastassia

PLAYSIS, I do remember that amazing photo and review in VIBE! A good friend of mine has worked with Alice’s producer back in ’06, so I’ve been hyped to her since. Her music is genuine and truly soulful. Love her sound.

  18. I’ve been loving Alice Smith since I downloaded her CD on iTunes last month. I have to agree with everyone else that “Do I” is the hottest song on the album! It has great intensity and it really showcases her voice. Definitely go to iTunes and hear the sample!

    J. Dakar # 2:

I really like that song..but my jam is Love Endeavor..I luv to dance so that would be my “groove” jam..I’m just upset it’s not enough tracks on the album..Once u pop it in it’ sover…sadly…

  20. keke

I am diggin her, new and refreshing!

  21. Sag1970

it’s sad that we didn’t know about her, but yet they put b.s. in heavy rotation (i.e. Soulja Boy). I just ordered my copy! i can’t wait!!

  22. I'm Just Sayin...

Never heard of the girl before now, but i love love LOVE it!!
    Truly refreshing.

  23. cdnyc

I feelin’ this. I may have to add this to my collection. It’s good to hear REAL musicians, with REAL voices, singing REAL music for a change.

  24. BIGVON

I WOULD HAVE 2 SAY THANK U FOR INTRODUCIN’ ME TO THIS HEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT…I FUCKS WIT IT

  25. I like it its different. I live in Canada so I don’t always get the best black music. I aree CL should preview alot more underground talent as well so that we can support them. But thanks for this, I’ll check for her.

  26. Im sorri but all these “new artists” suck. Yes im bitter & want to go back to the 90s where we had real music & real artists.

  27. Weezy

all right concrete loop better late than never. Alice Smith is a breath of fresh air her album is great and she should be getting more attention. Black girls can sing we don’t need Amy Winehouse to show the world what soul music is.
Co-sign with another poster you cannot compare her with Alicia Keys her voice is way stronger and her album is more consistent than As I am

  28. reportergirl

I’ve been talking about this cd so much that someone asked me if I was on Alice Smith’s promotions team. LOL. But honestly, I’m an advocate for the things that I enjoy. I LOVE this music. “Do I” is my JAM. I’m telling all my friends who like good music to check out her myspace page. Yes it’s different, but the “normal” stuff is the reason I don’t listen the radio right now.
I understand why people want to say she sounds like someone because it gives you a frame of reference. I tell people, think Macy Gray, Nora Jones and now that I think about it Joi meets someone you’ve never heard before.
I like Beyonce, Alicia, but I’ve got my Chrisette Michele, Feist and Corrine Bailey Ray. Good music is good music. Period.
Music is a matter of taste. I’m not into Soulja Boy. Cool. You don’t like Alice Smith. More Alice for me. One less person trying to buy tickets to the concert when I am.
To everyone feeling the gems on this cd, doesn’t it make you happy? Find yourself singing “if we start the ball to rolling…” and looking forward to a stray moment so you can jam for a few before you get back to work? Doesn’t it feel good?
