ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: J*DAVEY

Monday, January 14, 2008

♫ J*Davey - Slooow

Meet J*Davey. The Los Angeles based duo has been doing it for a long time, making their mark as underground superstars, featured in several publications. For years, they have generated a huge buzz. I have always been a fan of theirs, so I decided to feature them with the new track “Slooow.” I love J*Davey because they transcend genres and their music is what I like to call “raceless music.” Everyone can relate to their sound, their melodies and their lyrics.

J*Davey definitely needs to be on your radar in ‘08. Make sure you check them out and show some love!

That was different. I don’t know how I feel about that one. Her voice is kinda weird, but not in a bad way really. Sounds like it was mad ein the 80’s but I guess that sound is coming back anyway. I could see Erykah Badu on this track too.

Hmmmmmm, at first sound I’d say “HATE IT”. I’ll give it another shot tomorrow. That ping, ping, ping, is annoying.

lol @ 6 “ping, ping, ping”

And another thing, I know that they are “different ” and everything but I’m a person that’s all about voice and artists that give quality live perfomances and she’s sounds a little studio. I haven’t seen her live or anything or heard her voice on other tracks, but can she sing as well?

#3, get over it. I’ve always been a fan of j*davey, and have been trying to do a spotlight on them for a while, but since I have never been able to get in touch with their people, I hadn’t done one.

thanks for your opinion though. it’s always someone talking about what they don’t know about.

J*Davey is the shit. They were featured on The Roots criminally underrated Game Theory and on 4hero’s Play With The Changes (super dope ish by the way). They are doing something against the grain and I support that to the fullest.

different…like the idea of this group trying to slow down the pace of the majority of records out there. its the type of lounge, drinking wine grown and sexy feeling:)

14.

Ms. Maye

Monday, January 14, 2008 /

She sounds like an electronic voice of “Left Eye” mixed with Eryka Badu… I’m not really feeling this track though. I’m more focused on her voice than the subject of her song! Once she starts the verse, I’m already in another zone! lol

I’m sick of people coming up on here talking about “we late” and etc. First, CL wasn’t even in existence 3 years ago, so you sound dumb as hell. Secondly, Brian has posted music on them in the new music review already. We JUST started doing these artist spotlights last year, so tell me how me late again?

Why have a blog ,if people can’t post how they feel? I mean getting angry/annoyed cuz people said “Brian was late posting this” is mad childish..it’s not that serious! Yeah I know it’s your blog, but you don’t have to be an uptight ass about it!

This jawn is crazy sick. i really can’t get enough of them. Lost EPisode (Land of The Lost mixtape), Beauty of Distortion…..all of it is bananas! Can’t wait til Warner Bros. gets off their ass and starts to get proactive. I mean it’s like they don’t want them to make it…….they ain’t even get them listed on their artists page(Warner Bros. i’m speaking of). They do the most honest music i’ve heard since ummm….. 1999….. Sesame Street gives no reason to why they don’t like it….it’s pure hate…… keep up the good work kiddos…… can’t wait for a on the shelf proper release!

45.

sesamestreet

Monday, January 14, 2008 /

#44 Why do I have to be classified as a “hater”, because I don’t like their music, amd I not entitled to have a different taste/view than everyone else?

I’m no hater, and this music was like “nails on a chalkboard” to my ears!

They aren’t, Stevie, Rachelle, Laylah, Coltrane, Donnie, Downing, etc, so I have no reason to hate!

Now, Alice Smith is that truth…J*Davey…is a damn LIE!!!!!!

J*Davey is going to blow up in ‘08. I’m surprised and pleased to see that there are some folks that visit CL that are actually up on J*Davey.

Man, B! This is what I’m talking about, keep bringing us that new shit!

CL ROCKS!!!!!!

Try “venus to mars”, that song is the banger. These song are kinda different from their original stuff. Try “might as well” if you think “slooooow” is too weird. It features georgia anne muldrow, another unrecognized talent loved in the uk.

@ Seseme Street. People can post how they feel, but don’t get it twisted. When I see someone saying the same shit over and over in the comment area, I will speak on it. I’m all for speaking your mind, but when people come on here trying to disrespect the site and what we do, I won’t stand for it. I suggest you check the comment rules again, before you find yourself on the moderation list. Your comments have become increasingly annoying over the past few weeks. Uptight ass? You must be crazy.

This group is beyond the comprehension of many on first listen.
I have been friends of theirs for years.
Since they started this thing.
The new songs they have are dope, but they don’t give you a full experience of J*Davey.

If you can get your hands on songs like “No More” and “Mister Mister”, “Gangsta” and “Slut Daddy” then you’ll see the range and progression of style.

They are AMAZING live.
The energy, the ability to capture the crowd, the one on one feeling you get, they are dope.

But explore their stuff a bit more.
They aren’t a one-serving type of group.

It takes open ears and minds to get with them and enjoy.
Hope you can re-train your ears to listen for unique artistry.

:-)

Shouts to B&B!
Love yall.

p.s. They are signed to Warner Bros.

i like you angel. you set it straight. idk why ppl care when it gets put out. i mean at least he did it, who cares if it was late? besides this is the first time i’m hearing them so thanks brian.

but on to my opinion,
i’m not a fan YET. they have the same elements that i look for in an artist so maybe i need to listen to different songs by them.

someone mentioned erykah and i realized that if erykah was singing this song, i would love it so maybe it’s the girl’s voice that turns me off but i’ll listen to more. i never like to completely discard a group without listening to several songs of theirs

okay I’m a J*DaVey stan!!! thank you Brian for posting them. I do realize to many that J*DaVey is old to the underground heads but they are not popular enough for everyone to know who they are. For the person that said that her voice sounds too studio-like. Well the music that you are listening to is soultronic/alternative new wave. Her voice is going to sounds strange or altered. I love it! She has a lazy sound to it. Yes she is not a vocalist she is an expressionist. You don’t have to have the biggest voice to express art because if art was just an ideal standard then it would’nt be art lol. Anyways Brian and Angel keep doing your thing! ;)

I’ve been a J*DaVeYbaby since I heard “No More” a couple years ago. I went to their first NYC show at the Canal Room and it was crazy… I mean the energy was sick and the crowd was so diverse. Me and my peeps met the girl, Jack Davey, before the show and she’s really nice. I talked to Brook after the show and he’s cool peoples too. I’m glad they’ve been getting shine because it’s obvious from their live show that they love what they do and they’re daring to be different (something that seems lost in the industry today).
For those of y’all feeling them you should check out HEAVy (http://www.myspace.com/whoisheavy), another guy-girl duo that people seem to compare J*DaVeY to. They’re very new wave and “funk-punk” now, but they still kept some of their soulful, acid jazz style that they had on earlier songs.
Here’s footage of a rehearsal:

She sounds almost exactly like Sy Smith…well, yeah, EXACTLY. Check “The Syberspace Social”, it’s mellow all the way through like this. May these cats other tracks sound different, but this one sounds just like that chick Sy. But I like this grrove though, I chill right to this type of stuff.

J’DaVeY is apart of the change in music that i have been waiting for. Jack Davy’s raspy, lyrical, rhythmic singing would be eccentric to someone who isn’t open minded to music. And Brook D’leau’s electronic, syncopated, drum programming would be misenterpreted to a person saturated by the sounds of Timbaland or Doctor Dre. Their music (to me) however, is a wonderful and much needed piece of soul. What i admire most about this duo is that they don’t conform to the mold. They create it themselves! Why should it be that we must be as pretty as Beyonce’ and sing as good as Stevie for people to think positive about us? Until we start accepting people for who they are and not for what we want them to be, we’ll never open our eyes. But i believe in this music, and hope their music goes very far.
