I, for one, have more respect for people who give their kids more ethnic names BECAUSE these people who try to be uber conservative always miss the big picture: These names, the more conservative ones, are often some white patriarch’s name, being passed down not because the “less ethnic” person wants to name his/her child after said patriarch but because he/she feels some obligation. So, in naming your child, say…”Pierce” as opposed to “LeBron” you’re naming your child after some white person’s Big Daddy and doing what even the white person didn’t want to do. And, what some wont: more free spirited “less ethnic” people don’t feel beholden to their Great Grandfathers and they name their kids very new and inventive names like “Shayla” and “Memory.”

My point was this: If you purposely avoid a name because it might be perceived as ethnic, while choosing one that is more conservative or “traditional” THEN your interest in the more conservative one amounts to naming your child after some white man’s Big Daddy. But (as I said) if you like the name, even the conservative name…well it’s a nonissue….whatever you name your child, Zoe or Bumquisha…if you SINCERELY want to call your child that then so be it… So, that’s settled, I hope…
