I understand your point…and frankly I don’t like to touch the natural v. permed hair debate because…well, I just don’t… I’m actually allergic (mildly) to perms and get them every 8 months or so BUT I get them…and I’ve been asked time and time again why would I get them if I have such a reaction (my face swells slightly, takes on a red/bruised color, and I have flu-like nausea for a week or so) and I can’t really explain why…I mean, obviously it’s not a dire need if I can go several months without them but I just think it makes things easier after a point. But, I never sport the “natural look”…I style my hair normally and though I do admire women with such pride in themselves I often wonder how their being natural and wearing wigs is different from another’s perming and wearing European hair? Even Lauren Hill disses people for wearing European hair but she wears wigs????

About Beyonce…I think people target her “European look” because she was very demonstrative in wearing the afro and vowing to give up perms and makeup….she even gave an interview and said several people had tried to discourage her, saying it would hurt her career. So, I think when she went back to the European look after her first single “Work it Out” didn’t perform as she’d expected (and if you look in the inside of the Dangerously in Love liner, she used a promo shot from her “natural days”), people began to target her. At least, that’s when I read the crop of “superficial” taunts online.

Aww damn I’m sorry that you get bad allergic reactions to relaxers some people are allergic though. I myself has sported the natural look and to tell you the truth it’s just a pain in the ass to keep it up like folks getting perms every 4-6 weeks. I had to constantly keep my hair moisturuzed. I usually go on off with the “natural” look and the *ahem* “european look”. I actually like the natural look because of compliements. I myself have so much hair so it’s alot to keep up. I mean shit it’s long as hell with a perm but when natural it’s big like Kelis curly fro..lol..but I do agree when some people think that blacks think that “thick course hair” is bad. Remember when DC first went their seperate ways they asked everyone in the group what style of music were they doing for their solo albums and Kelly said rock/alternative, Michelle said gospel, and Beyonce said soul music. She wanted to emulate the style that most neo-soul artist rock. However since the knowles family is about that money and business her taking that career route was not going to help her make money or sell because only the minority enjoys neo-soul.
