Okay here’s another question I know alot of people get on Beyonce for rocking blonde..but here me out…I have cousins in my family that were born with blonde hair..so are they emualating “european traits” even though they were born with it? Last but not least, there are white people that are not born with refine hair so they get relaxers to straighten it and some dye their hair blonde. So are they selling out against their own? Just something to think about. Even if you rock your hair natural..you still need moisturizers to keep your hair healhy and that is not natural neither because you are still putting chemicals in your hair. I understand your point…and frankly I don’t like to touch the natural v. permed hair debate because…well, I just don’t… I’m actually allergic (mildly) to perms and get them every 8 months or so BUT I get them…and I’ve been asked time and time again why would I get them if I have such a reaction (my face swells slightly, takes on a red/bruised color, and I have flu-like nausea for a week or so) and I can’t really explain why…I mean, obviously it’s not a dire need if I can go several months without them but I just think it makes things easier after a point. But, I never sport the “natural look”…I style my hair normally and though I do admire women with such pride in themselves I often wonder how their being natural and wearing wigs is different from another’s perming and wearing European hair? Even Lauren Hill disses people for wearing European hair but she wears wigs????

About Beyonce…I think people target her “European look” because she was very demonstrative in wearing the afro and vowing to give up perms and makeup….she even gave an interview and said several people had tried to discourage her, saying it would hurt her career. So, I think when she went back to the European look after her first single “Work it Out” didn’t perform as she’d expected (and if you look in the inside of the Dangerously in Love liner, she used a promo shot from her “natural days”), people began to target her. At least, that’s when I read the crop of “superficial” taunts online.

Aww damn I’m sorry that you get bad allergic reactions to relaxers some people are allergic though. I myself has sported the natural look and to tell you the truth it’s just a pain in the ass to keep it up like folks getting perms every 4-6 weeks. I had to constantly keep my hair moisturuzed. Oh no no no….no no…no no no Chloe is NOT an Edie Sedgwick wannabe. Oh noooo. Sure many make that comparison to say both are innovative and individual in dress. Chloe is very artistic and in that way she’s like Edie, very bold and irreverent…
But she’s definitely worn Edie’s look…who hasn’t…it was THE LOOK last winter (well several winters, really…some snobbish critics and editors said black tights were out. But everyone has eventually come back around). But Chloe’s not Edie…The comparisons, people who make them…they see Edie in Chloe in that Chloe is DIFFERENT as Edie was…so can’t merely emulate Edie as that would make her the furthest thing from the woman. It’s a paradox…you’re just like her if you’re really not at all like her… Chloe is compared to other fashion-forward women too…not just Edie. But it’s all complimentary, as I said, it’s more a means of the journalist’s/writer’s making it easier to write about her, I think.

Is it a coincidence that Rihanna has copied Beyonce several times? I think not.

I do have one serious question I’d like to ask all the black ladies here….when & do you ever think it will be “fashionably okay” for us to wear our own hair? Each year I’m amazed at the trends from weaves to wigs. I’ve heard many arguments why we won’t ever stop wearing the pieces, but I was just wondering why we feel the need to have hair down our asses…that’s not really ours. I think there’s nothing sexier than a black woman sporting the all natural (could be pressed, permed, etc. as long as it’s what God gave you) look from her hair to her body parts. After all we are the epitome of what REAL beauty is anyways. Most woman of other ethnicities are always trying to accentuate what we naturally have (from skin complexion to fake ass and titties)….everything except the hair??? I just don’t understand.

I’ve always had thick hair shoulder length not to long and not to short but I have always worn weaves, every since I was in the 7th grade to be exact, mainly because I like a differnt look, and because I am a hair dresser and hair and fashion is my passion. I NEVER said Beyonce fans had no clue about fashion…I said anyone who thinks Beyonce is a trendsetter has no clue about fashion… It has nothing to do with her music.
As for needing a fashion magazine to tell you what is what…that’s why I wrote “get a self-concept” lol and the “or a Vogue magazine (that would pe the proverbial “clue”)” Was a facetious way of saying…if you think Beyonce’s a trendsetter you’ve probably got no self-concept (i.e. real sensibility) so you’re better of with a Vogue magazine…a clue lol It was really an insult to anyone who would have to rely on Vogue… (and that’s not to say it isn’t a good magazine…it very much is…if you have some idea of what you’re looking for…it facilitates things…but it could be better…too many people selling out for ad dollars. I agree that IF Beyonce is copying Rihanna they are about square since Rihanna DEFINITELY copied Beyonce when she first came out. I think Beyonce accepted it as a form of flattery, then, though…I think Jay Z basically chose rihanna and Tiara Marie because they both resemble Beyonce. I think Beyonce saw nothing threatening in Rihanna and encouraged it, early on (doing such things as writing little notes to Rihanna, encouraging her Beyonce-like performances). So, yeah Rihanna copied her…but I also think Beyonce was flattered by it..she saw it as paying homage to her, the way Tina Turner sees Beyonce (and Christina Aguilera for some reason) as paying homage to her. Anyway…yeah Rihanna was a total Beyonce facsimilie…so much so that I ignored her completely before “Umbrella”

Now…do I think Beyonce is copying Rihanna now…I don’t know. I certainly think the nail lacquer as an accessory is really really really a Rihanna thing (although Kelis boasted neon colors wayyyy before they became the in thing last year…fluorescents were perhaps Rihanna’s thing but Kelis was all about neon yellows, pinks, jade green, bright reds…nobody remembers or cares…SMH). And, honestly I do see Beyonce trying for some of the youthful edginess of darker palates like Rihanna’s but Ashlee Simpson’s got a black fetish too…and Rumor Willis…and Mary-Kate Olsen…so who knows?
