DVD RELEASES: BLACKOUT

Thursday, January 31, 2008

bout.jpg

I actually got a chance to view the DVD release of ‘Blackout‘ earlier this week and let’s just say it’s a great movie. The acting from Michael B. Jordan (best known for playing Wallace on ‘The Wire’), Sean Blakemore and Jeffery Wright were on point! Here is more info on the film:

On August 14, 2003, the largest blackout in American history- known as the Northeast Blackout of 2003-was widely reported as peaceful. But in Brooklyn’s forgotten East Flatbush neighborhood, mayhem unfolded when the power shut down. This is the untold story of the blackout, based on true incidents.

Starring: Jefferey Wright, Sean Blakemore, Zoe Saldana, Melvin Van Peebles, Michael B. Jordan and more.

Blackout was directed by Jerry Lamothe and will air on BET Friday, February 1st followed by the DVD release from on February 5th. Make sure you check out this great film if you get a chance. The trailer is after the cut.

First off let me say that i am from Brooklyn East Flatbush, and believe me it was serious but not as serious as their making this movie out 2 be, every1 went through there own issuse and honestly it was quite peaceful, yea there were a few fights, yea some ppl stole stuff of course we were hot as hell without the AC lol, but in all honesty it was that bad, we pretty much had fun and partied over here on flatbush lol

This is just hollywood trying 2 make a dollar and exaggerate a situation once again!

@11. ITs not how Brooklyn reacted. Its about Jerry’s side of things. The things HE encounterd. There nothing the movie where everyone was looting and all that you are saying. He’s depicted like 3 or four situations from different ppls lives, not the lives of everyone in Brooklyn.

This movie is shady. I lived through the blackout in BKLYN and it was all peace on my bock. These stories are suspect.

I remember talking to my friend on the cell and she didn’t even know what was going on. I was watching the news and had to inform her about everything.

I guess its a good concept, but most likely I won’t watch it

I went to the premier and this is a great movie. Black written and directed. NOTHING to do with Hollywood at all. The real issue is why no studio picked this up for National release. Hollywood would rather invest in dance movies than real black stories. Some of you need to wake up and some complaining about everything *cough* #9 *cough*

does anyone know what time it airs on BET? I try to stay away from that channel as much as possible, therefore I haven’t seen and advertisements.

I will pick up the DVD. Film looks interesting & i love Jeffrey Wright in everything he does so I will support it.
To the person who inquired about Zoe Saldana, the fact of the matter is SHE LOOKS BLACK, not really Latina so she is goig to get called for more roles that are written for BLACK women. Sadly there is a limit to how many available roles are written for Black Women specifically. It is what it is you know…?

@ 22, its not about complaining, its about ppl trying 2 add stuff to sitiuations that never happened, its 1 thing 2 make a blk film based on something real, but its another thing 2 over exaggerrate and add things that may not have happened! im from 40th and forster the center of east flatbush…believe me a lot of what that trailor showed a lot of it i didnt c and im sure ppl from east flatbush can back me up, the only thing i saw that night were ppl stealing goods! i was all up and through that neighborhood that night with my ppls and the most choas i heard and saw were a few arguments, 1 or 2 fights, ppl taken goods, but mostly ppl laughing, and having fun, and cooperating with 1 another the only thing i can relate 2 from that trailor r ppl complaing about how damn hot it was without the AC and boy was it…i have no problem with blk films that have substance I LOVE THEM!, but when u want 2 add crap 2 a real situation that more than likely didnt happen thats when i have 2 speak on it and have a problem!!!

@29
My sentiments exactly. I didn’t know my neighbors until the blackout. We sat on the stoops and fire escapes all night and talked. One dude broke out the grill because he’s afraid his meat would go bad. It was hilarious. A BBQ on Eastern Parkway in the middle of the night.

I must agree with all the talk about how fun the blackout was!!!!! Everybody was chillin. Out of everything I saw fights was NOT one of them. I don’t remember any to be honest. Everyone was just making the most out of breaking into stores and getting what they wanted (lmao). With flashlights ALL over Brooklyn it REALLY was something fun. Just Imagine a chill-good-time flick like cookout….It had that sorta mood to me….

BUT regardless I wanna see the movie….why nott…..

Not only reppin bk but I grew up in east flatbush…40th baby!!! Although I wasn’t in Brooklyn during the blackout I can imagine it being a fun time and not an apocalypse. None of my ppl from Flatbush shared that experience w/ me when I asked them about how the blackout played out. Nonetheless the movie looks interesting and I’d check it out. Just MHO I wasn’t there so I can’t really say….
