The 1st Annual BET Honors took place in Washington D.C on Saturday, paying tribute to blacks in all aspects of work. Honorees were Alicia Keys (Entertainment), Tyra Banks (Media), Dr. Cornel West (Inspirational/Education), Richard Parsons (Corporate), the Honorable Maxine Waters (Government) and CEO Janice Bryant Howroyd (Entrepreneur).

I am writing to express my disappointment that these honorees accepted an award from BET. That network has done more to set Black people back than any other in recent memory. I stopped watching it years ago when they shifted their programming from shows like “Teen Focus” to “Hot Ghetto Mess”. They have categorically waged war against Black women and girls by airing some of the most degrading programs since the beginning of the 20th century – yes the 20th century! Anyone who has a child or cares about the relationship between Black men and women should think about how watching so many denigrating imagery affects us! Some of these people are supposedly known for their platform supporting positive images of women of color, or are against abuse and violence, or education. I find it hard to understand why they could not have simply declined. Just like the African slave trade, there were white people ready and willing to exploit us, but they were greatly aided by the other Africans willing to sell their own kind out.

I wish they would show reruns of video soul, video vibrations, teen summit, cita’s world, old reruns of Bobby Jones Gospel, BET News, Hell all of the old shows they used to play way way back in the day. Because that will show people who are my age, under age people and older, that BET was not trash back in the day.

@18 I think you’re absolutely right. I quit watching BET a minute ago b/c I can no longer identify with the images that channel projects. It angers me. It’s like…”That’s all they think of us? Really?” I am happy, however, that they recognized some worthy, talented black celebs. It’s almost insulting in its irony, and hardly makes up for the travesty they’ve forged against us, but it’s something. I’m sure my ancestors didn’t like getting whipped, then offered a glass of lemonade…but I bet they took it. If that makes sense..?

I disagree. Keyshia should have covered up that tatoo and chingy needs to know how to properly dress for an event.
Ummm 24 YES it is that serious. Viacom owns BET/MTV/VH1. I could lmup them all together but the “B” was for Black and for a long time that was all we had. It was waaay better when the white controlled conglomerates ignored it and it was a start-up. I’m tired of seeing gyrating naked Black women, hearing b**ch and all that garbage and having the people who are MAKING the MONEY from it say in effect that’s it’s their business. It’s a free country certainly and I will protest, write letters and make my voice heard. Enough is Enough! When our people had enough they did something about it. Some people tried to stop it or didn’t understand why or were afraid of retaliation. If there was BALANCE I could change the channel for a few hours knowing something mentally challenging or thought-provoking would be on soon. But noooo…it’s pretty much 100% garbage 100% of the time. There is not enough variety. And for Bob Johnson to publicly attack Barack Obama was the ultimate insult. Hillary Clinton thinks he’s the man to speak to us about who we should vote for? Would she be sitting in a white church with Hugh Hefner attacking John Edwards? This also shows how little she thinks of Black women.

Almost everyone looks great! Alicia Keys is really stunning and she is so deserving of her award. Not only does she make beautiful music but she is so involved in charities trying to bring about change and save lives. I love her!!!
