FASHION ROUNDUP: MEN’S FASHION IN MILAN

mensroundup.jpg

Milan Menswear runway shows are wrapping up soon after almost a month of anticipated new designs from the likes of Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, and Fendi. These shows brought in travelers including Jay-Z & Beyonce (who supposedly caused quite a stir at the Versace show), Ludacris and Chaka Zulu for Giorgio Armani, and Pharrell – who is of course the poster boy for Louis Vuitton.

In the event that I don’t cover men’s fashion as often as I would like, I decided to do a roundup on the trends that ruled the runway thus far. Surely some of these designs may not be ideal off the runway, but they are inspiration for many. So guys, take a look at what the big guns have in store for Fall ’08…

mens2.jpg

Double-breasted jackets were huge in just about every runway show I saw. They give a very sleek look to a suit or outfit…

men6.jpg

Biker jackets are also popular for winter outerwear…

mens9.jpg

If you don’t want a jacket, a vest would be the next option – which also ruled the runway…

mens8.jpg

Fabric wise, cozy knits are a favorite this season…

men4.jpg

Another favorite is soft velvet for casual and formal wear…

mens5.jpg

Big furs are coming back for the winter. We’ve seen our share of guys with fur jackets late last year…

mens1.jpg

Plaids rule as far as patterns goes…

mens7.jpg

Monochromatic color schemes and outfits are very bold for the fall…

mens3.jpg

Interesting enough, capes were very popular on the runway. How many are willing to dump that Puffer for one of these?

not too bad.I dont like the biker jackets or the pimp suits but everything else is nice. Its nice to know the rappers are deciding to upgrade from long white tees and throwbacks to this!! Good Job!

  2. Elviz

Very interesting.. I like most of them.. dont kno abut the ponchos. But the vest and knits are poppin.

  3. crystal

    * dont like the ponchos.,…now thats crossing the line!

  4. irrational rationalist

niiiiiccceee…and i know yall be hatin but jigga looks sexy!…got damn…oh and luda and skateboard p do as usual

  5. BONAFIDE

the nerdy lookin dude in the ‘plaid’ catergory all the way to the right is getting me hot and horny!!! ha………i’m glad you guys posted something on menswear though…

  6. TIANNA THIS IS A FABULOUS POST! IT TAKES A REEEAL MAN TO STEP OUTSIDE THE BOX AND STOP WEARING POLO JEANS AND A PAIR OF DAMN TIMBERLANDS, THESE LOOKS ARE ECLECTIC & GROWN AND SEXY IM ESPECIALLY LOVIN THE YELLOW BLAZER…

  7. LOL at the ‘Knits’ and the ‘Ponchos’! Not for my man!

  8. All I gotta say is, “Where the heck are the black runway divos?” Black folks are always the first to run out and buy (and often times SET) the new fashion trend while the new trend is rarely, if EVER, advertised on our BACKS by the designers. Blacks provide free advertisement for these designers allll day long. THINK ABOUT IT!

  9. Dame

Plaid and ponchos I am not feeling it. Now if KanYe rocked a poncho that would be interesting to see. Jay I see you boo looking good.

  10. B

I LOVE EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE MONCHROME SUITS,..JUST NOT FOR ME. I’VE BEEN ROCKIN WOOL SWEATERS, AVIATORS, AND SCARVES THIS WINTER BUT THIS IS DEFINITELY INSPIRING. GOOD JOB TIANNA!!!

  11. Gem

I LOVE this post! FINALLY a good one!! I think all the looks are great (except the fur, of course) but it takes quite an individual to pull these off without looking as if he is in costume. Again, LOVE IT!

  12. WeezyBombaclotDifrentChick

I am really feelin this stuff except the loud suits and the monochromatic outfits. Ol’ boy w/ the yellow jacket know he hates hes modelin that!

  13. Ama

I love the Monochromatic outfits for some reason…my how luda has grown. From baggy jeans n wife beaters to double breasted suits and mens fashion shows…i love it!

  14. briana

    wow..ludacris looks hot

and long fur coats are in fashion for men?? that seems a little too effeminate to me, but whatev…..

  15. a.k.a. new yorker

luda’s looking good in that pic

anyway, i think all the looks are great (except for fur b/c i hate hate hate fur on anyone. it just looks so tacky and makes it look like the person is trying really hard to look rich. very unappealing). the thing is not every guy can pull these looks off, even some of these models couldn’t pull the looks off. i’ve seen guys in nyc rocking some of these styles exceptionally well though which is why i’m not against any of them. i personally think that the best men are the ones who can rock things like ponchos and still look hot b/c it’s a feat. my favs from the list are double-breasted jackets, biker jackets (hot! i’ve been trying to get a women’s biker jacket for myself. we’ll see how that goes), vests (those models pictured didn’t pull it off though), velvet, plaids (i especially love when 2 diff plaids are mixed together. it can be really interesting), and monochromes (all black would be the best though. i love men decked out in black)

  16. a.k.a. new yorker

oh yeah and i think it’s interesting that so many rappers are changing their looks now. luda HAS come a long way. so has jay-z. i like it

  17. mphsmade

    I LOVE IT!!!!!! YEEEEEEEESSSSSS

  18. Cocoahommee

Tianna, thanks sista for this post! I know you dont do it as often as I like but for me who is male and likes fashion, I really appreciate it.

  19. Just wanted to say that I appreciate your posts Tianna. I’m into fashion as much as you and I like to see stuff like this.

Im not feelin the ponchos, plaids, or biker jackets…the rest are hot

  20. nutybudy

These looks are all hot in their own way. It’s refreshing to see hip-hop artists and producers stepping outside of the “hiphop norm” of baggy jeans and long tees, it’s ok sometimes in the right places though, but these looks really make a statement and show just how these performers have grown. I dig it– step y’all game up and get your grown man on !!!!!!!!

  21. CARLISSIA

i love all of it !!!!!!!!!

  22. t-h is now r-h

    nice
i have a reason to bring out the plaids again
oh and i like the vests
i should considering i already own a few
don’t think i could pull off a poncho or a fur
i don’t really like the fur look
not really a fan of the velvet either
    nice

  23. lunamoon

Luda is so cute with his suit on. I don’t why he didn’t call me. I could have been with him and sat right next to him with my cute Dolce & Gabbana dress on.

  24. danielbank

Jay Z looks stunning just as before. I am kinda envy it.

    http://www.vcao.net/people-search/

  25. RC

I wouldn’t be caught dead in 75% of the outfits featured, however I have to compliment CL on how well these posts (this one in particular) have been put together. You guys are taking it to another level.

  26. Opinion Distributor

Oh wow! I guess I am completely out of the fashion loop :-( they all look like WOMEN! WTF! I would wear some of those outfits and especially the outerwear. AND I WISH I WOULD SEE A MAN IN A SHAWL OR LEOPARD PRINT COAT!!

Now Jay Pherrell & Luda are KILLIN’ IT!!!!!!

  27. Ladyssolady

How refreshing is it to se Luda looking lika a grown man!! The trapped fashion student in me LOVES the yellow velvet. Velvet blazers are soooo sexy on a man!! #17 mentioned mixing plaids/tartans together, and yes, it is an interesting look. As a woman, I have tried it, so I would love to see a man do it. I love a man that’s into fashion out of the box. I’m not sleeping on the shoes either!! I’m a sucker for a man in a good shoe, especially hard bottoms and square-toes!

  28. Vida

I’m going to have to say NO to Alexander McQueen on his plaid input. I also don’t think the monochromatic can be quite that bold. The last time that was in, my brother was a senior in HS and that was in 95. I remember him rocking all red from head to toe and his nike canvas’ in 8 different colors.

I do like the vests on men. I think that will be a nice clean look, the biker jackets we WAY to feminine. I have on that looks like that.

    The sweaters, definitely cozy.

The pancho on a man, better not ever happen.

  29. Big M

Luda is looking mighty yummy these days….maturity is so sexy on a man!

  30. Luda looks sexy
    How you doin Pharell?
No man should ever wear a freakin PONCHO sorry
Those plaids look a hot mess

  31. DJ MUTHA

Love the Poncho…Some of the people posting about the fashions on this board sound like passive aggressive homophobes which generally means they actually like the very thing they are dissing but lack the self confidence to embrace it because of insecurities and uncertainties about their own sexuality

    DJ MUTHA

  32. ahottie

I Feel Sorry For Men Fashion Because Theres Not Much They Can Do Theres A Thin Line Between Fashionable And Fruity/ Gay!

  33. CHOCOLATEKISSES

Jay look like a camel with a scarf on. You know they dont dress like that in Saudia Arabia.

  34. Thanks for not forgetting about us men, Tianna. The awards season is coming up here and I need ideas for what to don.

Althopugh some of these are really extreme, I like a few. Like the velvet outfit, I’m not sure about the colour yellow for the jacket though.

I also like the black (3rd pic) double-breast jacket.

Ludacris is looking sharp in his pint-stripe suit too, you can never go worng with a pint-stripe suit.

  35. The yellow velvet is NOT, and I repeat, NOT the business!! The ponchos are a little extreme as well…..unless you’re that B2K type of cat.

  36. missy

Love the fashions! Jay and Bee look so distinguished! Absolutely look this fly couple! Luda looks scrumptious!

  37. Chiara

Wow good job. It’s really nice, thanks.

  38. Delwin del

    GREAT REVIEW!!!!!
I love it when you guys do fashion caps.

  39. MISSISSIPPI G_DDAMN

Can’t tell you how good it feels to read this post! I hope it will get across the message that men ESPECIALLY my young black brothers can feel comfortable wearing tailored clothing that FITS, instead of wearing shyt like du rags and jeans falling off the ass! Personally, I feel like if you’re rocking a du rag with Tims and a throwback with your fingers on mini Playstation past the age of 22, it means you’re probably stunted, but I’ll give the benefit of the doubt and give a nucca till 25 to come to their damn senses!

Back in the day, let’s say late 80′s to early 90′s, a bruh could still rock some fly ass tailored rags on the regular. Things kinda changed starting from that time to now, shyt just got out of control! Not to say that baggy jeans and Tims was a beat look, hell I rocked it too. but for almost 20 YEARS now???? It’s gettin’ tyred, y’all!!

It’s time to balance it out, don’t you think? The young ladies I know want a brother to come CORRECT with his fashion flow if she wants to step out, and she wants him to know there’s a time and place for jeans and sneaks. Also, a well put together brother should have at least two tailored suits in his closet. One for job interviews and weddings and church, and one for God forbid, a funeral. It doesn ‘t have to be Armani either, you can get your ass to the Men’s Wearhouse for a decent suit. And while you’re there, please try to drop at least a buck and a half for 2 pairs of all purpose dress shoes, in brown and black, with matching belts and socks, if you could swing it.

Thanks for letting me rant. I guess I was so glad for Tianna’s dope-ass post that the floodgates just opened!

  40. MISSISSIPPI G_DDAMN

And special thanks to brothers like Luda, Jay-Z, Ye, Farrell, Usher and all them who set the pace.

  41. MISSISSIPPI G_DDAMN

    Meant Pharrell.

  42. tasha

    Gay…Gay….Gay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. CHERYLINMIAMI

Young Hov in the house is so necessary

But y’all niggaS actin way to tough
Throw on a suit get it tapered up, and let’s just
CHANGE CLOTHES AND GO! HA HA HA JAY TOLD YA’LL

  44. Dlish

all these clothes look as if they are made for gay white dudes…and bow wow and omarion LOL!!

    sorry, not feelin it

  45. Damn, Pharrell…just damn. His sexiness is radiating through my computer screen…

  46. PUnk azz capes. lol. I wore those as a little girl. Not a good look for a man though.

  47. LMAO @ #5! I said the same thing!

  48. NubianGoddez

Are they serious?? those are the gayest clothes ever!! any straight man would not be caught dead or alive in that gaylord crap, all I think about when I saw those outlandish outfits was the character Dita Mike Myers played on Saturday night while a nice tailored suit and business casual look is certainly a welcomed site, and no I’m not into that damn prison look of jeans hanging off the ass, do rag, unkempt locks and looking like a damn criminal about to bust you in the eye and snatch your pocket book. not even gay men would be caught dead in these retarded getups. majority of the gay men I know are well dressed and look like wall street bankers, these outfits are just plain gay!!

  49. MISSISSIPPI G_DDAMN

    LOL @ #53

Yeah, I don’t think these looks would especially fly with the hood boys (except for those “children” who are going to walk in the gay ball), but thanks for pointing out that a brother should up his suit game!

  50. MISSISSIPPI G_DDAMN

Oh, one more thing, the clothing worn in the shows are purposely “over the top” to showcase the drama and draw interest to the designer’s looks for the season. Most of a designer’s collection could be based on more traditional looks.

  51. Dame

Hey where is Andre 3000 he is definitely one who steps outside the box.

  52. Detgurl

I see why everyone think most rappers are on the DL why are grow me at a runway show that’s queer as heel> Jay is there with his woman Pharrell looks queer in these pics and I have never seen or heard about Luda being with a female. I don’t care if he has a baby mama. I’m starting to believe the blind items about these rappers.

  53. Ione

Mmmmm the fall fashion for men is slick. But! I would have to say if your not comfortable with wearing certain trends because they are out do not attempt! Lol. The biker jackets is sweet “if” you can pull it of. I had mixed feelings about the poncho not a good look for men period. The knits and double-breasted jackets were the best out of the bunch. oh! Can’r forget the furs they look good only if you do. lol

  54. halcyonc

Pharrel looks suspect…is he wearing lipstick?

I hate that dam scarf trend. It looks gay.

  55. halcyonc

Be and J distinguished? Didn’t know all you need is an ugly ass scarf that I would wear when I was 10 only because my mother forced me and 10 bags of weave in my head to look “distinguished”. I swear some of you worship these two fools at the alter.
