Kelly Rowland recently sat down with the UK’s Voice Online to talk about how people are always comparing her to Beyonce, how poorly her sophomore album “Ms. Kelly” did on the charts, and more.
ON BEING COMPARED TO BEYONCE:
People can’t expect me to be Beyoncé or Beyoncé to be me or me to be Michelle or whatever! Just allow us to be ourselves! People see how positive we are as women and as friends, and instead of them learning from that, they wanna hate on it. I have no time for that kind of negative thinking. People should be happy to see women getting along and working together, without being insecure about each other. It doesn’t have to be drama, but people always wanna create drama! I don’t even let that bother me. ‘Cause people will continue to talk and we’ll just continue selling records.
ON HER ALBUM FLOP & RE-RELEASE:
“The sales weren’t as good as I wanted them to be and to be honest, I did feel sad about that for a little while. I felt that the industry was fickle and for a minute, I felt like I didn’t want to be a part of that any more. I feel that the label should have promoted it more the first time around. But they’re excited now, so that’s all that counts.”
ON LEARNING ABOUT HER SELF THROUGH PAST RELATIONSHIPS
“I learned that I shouldn’t allow my past to affect my present. I didn’t grow up with my biological father and I think that girls who grow up in that situation can sometimes grow up looking for daddy. So I think it’s important to know who your father is. For me, Beyoncé’s father is like my father. When we’re all at home, Matthew treats me like his little girl. But for girls who grow up without a father figure, I think it’s important for them to know their self worth so they don’t look for the wrong things when they grow up and start to forge relationships.”

Kelly you really need to wake up. If you sold more records than Beyonce’ do you really think she would be your friend? Of course she is your friend because in her eyes you are beneath her, and you are her yes woman. If you would stop riding her coat tails and stood on your own two she wouldn’t be your friend.

well, regardless of everything, I love Kelly, and I like her as an artist…she is a talented singer, and she is a sweetheart on TV and in person.
i noticed a lot of things about her comments….
1. this is the first time she’s ever said that she was mad at the label for not promoting her.
2. she also noted that @ one point she wanted to give up the industry, which I heard she actually said at one of her house of blues performances…
3. and yeah, Kelly has sold records. People are still buying Destiny’s Child albums, and people did buy Ms. Kelly, maybe not as many as she wanted, but people did buy it.
My only hope is that she actually gets some backing from her label, and I mean real support. That “Daylight” song she has with Travis from GCH is cool and everything, but I don’t think it’s the one that’s going to send her over the top.

Although I applaud Kelly for her positive outlook on things, she is too submissive. Despite having a excellent friendship with B, which is fine, she has let her loyalty impact her career and place her as only being second best. Perhaps if she were to branch out on her own and really be instrumental in her career she may get some play on Billboard. The best example I can give is fellow ex-bandmate LeToya Luckett…she did the damn thing and to me it is kind of embarrassing when an ex-bandmate shines better than one who stayed. LeToya got out of her situation and refused to be second best and she has blossomed on her own. Kelly needs a reality check or a hanger to hang up her career. Get it together hun!!!!! Oh yeah “selling records” hmph….Yeah with Beyonces’ counting for that 85%.
I like Kelly’s attitude. Her album didn’t do well but she’s still going. But as far as her music, I have never liked her voice. The only song she put out that sounded halfway good to me was Daylight. In addition, I have never liked Michele’s voice, but after hearing Stop This Car, I’m excited for her project. If they are serious about a DC reunion, they need to go head with that because it is the only way Kelly’s music career has ever been relevant.

If all the other girls was so great then they would be on the same level as Beyonce. Letoya went solo and had a little success was it as much as Beyonce? Kelly needs to stop concerning herself with what people say and just focus on her career. The opportunities that may be available to her for being a part of DC won’t be there forever. She’s definitely focusing on the wrong ish!!! The best way to stop the haters is to be successful in your craft. Get in the studio, get some hit records, and stop worrying about what folks say about Beyonce. Beyonce is getting hers. I suggest you do the same before it’s too late.
I think it’s all just a front. Just like Beyonce, I don’t think we will ever really know the real Kelly. I don’t even think she really knows who she is or what she wants. So sad.

Listen kelly when you decide to release an album despite how strong or poor an album is it will be compared to the best..Beyonce is at the top right now and in order to differentiate yourself among your compititon you need to create better music and a stronger character. Maybe if you stop doing R&B and release a country music album maybe you could start being compared to Faith Hill or Carrie Underwood since you are so tired of being compared to Beyonce. Take a cue from Solange? I would say that the Solange is definately the bigger flop between Solange and Kelly. Solange CANNOT sing! She shouldn’t even try!. Kelly can sing, I just don’t like her voice. If I were solange, I would go a totally different direction, keep up with the acting and make a career of that because music will not be a success for her. All of the DC girls were set up! There was only ever one goal for that group and it was to make Beyonce a star. Mission accomplished, everything else was just a STEPPING STONE (Kelly, Michele) to getting there.
Nunya Letoya is not a good example. She is still second best or third best or whatever you want to call it. Yeah she had a hit single but her album did not do that well. The only one out of DC that is a huge success is Beyonce. Letoya still gets compared to Kelly just like the rest of them. The media doesn’t care about Letoya, Kelly, or the rest of them. The only care about how they feel about Beyonce. For example, has there ever been a Kelly interview where they don’t ask about Beyonce? I don’t think so. The same goes for Letoya. It’s sad but it’s how things are.
I wish Kelly luck but to be perfectly honest she’s better in a group than solo. She has more confidence when Bee and Michelle are by her side. I wish her well though.

YOU ARE SO RIGHT. I was listening to the radio about a year ago and they were playing a game called “who do you know?” where people have famous people they know call in for them. The biggest star (or friend of) won the game. Michelle called in for someone and they told that person if they could get Beyonce to call, they would win. That’s a damn shame! Being a member of the biggest female group should have sealed the deal but it was some no name baseball player that won.
#25 how was there a setup. People just loved Beyonce more because just listen to her voice. That girl is super talented. Not saying the other girls weren’t but come on. I don’t know but all I know is from day one when I heard Beyonce on No No No I knew that she would have success. I had never heard anybody sing that fast before. Being a part of the biggest selling girl group of ALL TIME had a big influence on her career. Although she was always out front, Destiny’s Child was a package deal. There is no denying that she is talented, and I love her, but…she has her daddy, and Destiny’s Child to thank for her success. If Destiny’s Child would have flopped…she wouldn’t have been as big as she is.
