Wednesday, January 23, 2008
Tyler Perry brings us another film this year starring Angela Bassett and himself. Meet The Browns, another film based off one of his stage plays, follows a single mother from Chicago (Bassett) that struggles to make ends meet. After learning about her father’s passing, she travels to Georgia to meet and bond with a family she never knew she had.

Meet The Browns will hit theaters March 21st, 2008.

I love when we all can chorale behind something of positivity. This is what Black America needs to do more often. #13 asked if his monopoly was a good thing, and I have to say perhaps it is. For some reason, when there is only one person representing our views we can all unify behind that person, that is what Tyler Perry has become for the film industry. He is the only one telling our stories, through our people, and making it appeal to the masses. I thank God for figureheads like Tyler Perry. May he be continually blessed.

I’m sorry but I love to support black Hollywood but DAMN!!!!!!
How many times is Tyler Perry gonna re-do the same movie, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again?
“Single mother/father struggling and they need help so they go to their family, have a good ol time eating at the dinner table. (Insert church scene)….they go outside and have a barbecue, the lead character meets his/her love interest and they’re also single with relationship issues…(Insert Madea)…THE END”
Can we please get some black movies with some substance? Where are the “Do The Right Thing”s at?
There’s also a new movie coming out called “Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins”…basically the same premise as this movie only slightly different. Please don’t support bullsh#t like this.

To #28 why dont u be glad that there is a BLACK MAN in WHITE HOLLYHOOD making BLACK MOVIES b/c white people dont give a fuck about portraying us.
Y so much negativity against a black man doing GOOD? Damn. And where are all of his movies rehashed. Can u please clarify that better b/c so far you havent.
His first movie, Diary of a Mad Black Woman was about a woman who was fooled by her husband and left the relationship to. I thought it was an okay movie, although it was horribly structured and didnt have much of a successful genre identity. But it was Tyler Perry’s first and even he acknowledged the mistakes.
Then came Madea’s family Reunion which was a step up from DMBW, but still weak. yet, its premise was not the same as the movies b4 or after it.
Then Came Why Did I Get Married, which was still awkward in parts, but it was a GOOD ASS MOVIE. I was surprised at how good it was. Tyler even acknowledged he stepped his game up. ANd it was about blk married couples working out their difficult marriages. There was no “family”. How does it compare to his first 2 films?
Now this movie coming up, Meet the Browns. Im expecting good things b/c Tyler Perry has learned a lot about the film industry.
And please, tell me which of his movie are all about a single mother going through a tough time until she reunites with her family. Please, explain.
People are just hating. Even on BET the Crank that 2007 crap special was dissing Tyler Perry’s movies as if they’re all the same. The guest they had up there were unappreciative that a Blk man could make something positive for blacks out of Hollywood.

Just look at the reviews to all of his movies and you’ll see that they aren’t as great as you’re hyping them up to be. Maybe if black people cultured themselves and watched movies that weren’t just African-American related they would know that Tyler Perry’s shit sandwiches of movies aren’t good.
Have you seen some of the movies that were nominated for Oscars this year? And not just “American Gangster”?
All his movies have the same motive, and I’m glad hes trying to portray blacks in a positive light but it just is making us seem more incoherent as filmmakers than as human beings.
How is telling my opinion “hating,” some people need to remove that word from their vocabulary.

Spike Lee
Gina Prince Blythewood-Love & Basketball
Kasi Lemmons-Eve’s Bayou & Talk to Me
John Singleton-lately he’s been off, but Boyz in the Hood is a masterpiece and his Oscar nomination was for that film.
Denzel Washington-Antowne Fisher, The Great Debaters
The List goes on & on all of their movies are better than Tyler Perry’s over the top movies.

American Gangster got great reviews, BUT there were too many movies this year that got better reviews. This was a really strong year for movies and their are only 5 spots, but RUBY DEE got an Oscar nomination for her role in American Gangster.
No Country For Old Men
Juno
MIchael Clayton
There Will Be Blood
Atonement
Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Before the Devil Knows your Dead
Into the Wild
All of these movies got better revies than American Gansgter or The Great Debaters.

Can some on tell me why the protaganist in all his films is a lightskinned dude comming to save a down trodden “ssskrong” black single mother, I’m not comlaining (represent like it’s 1988 in here ya’ll) but what is that about , even in his plays it was like that.

Exactly, I like Tyler Perry and respect him for his work ethic but the dude just hasn’t made a good movie yet. His movies are all plagued with bad editing, bad screenplays, bad directing in general and some of his casting is all off. The only truly good acting role he had for one of the black actors was Tasha Smith who actually made “Why Did I Get Married” bearable.
NOMOSOUL, wouldn’t be giving his movies such praise if he actually saw a movie like “There Will Be Blood” or “No Country For Old Men”…but then again I doubt he would bother because he would consider them boring.

Right now I am looking forward to Gina Prince Blythewood (Director of Love& Basketball) The Secret Life of Bees. I’m also looking forward to Spike Lee’s Miracle at St. Anna and Lee Daniels( Producer of Monsters Ball and Director of Shadowboxer)Push.
No Country for Old Men was the Shit, I liked Juno , but I thought it was a bit overrated.

Oh well, try and supporting a movie that actually deserves your money.
It ain’t like I’m hating his hustle but damn if I want him to make the same damn movie again, it just looks like “Diary of a Mad Black Women” only with a rehashed story line. And it pains me to see these movies get so much praise from blacks, Hollywood is indeed fickle when it comes to black actors and actresses and its sickening to see them playing thugs and gangsters all the time but Tyler Perry needs to either stop writing his own movies or just go into producing instead.
Has anyone seen that show “House of Payne” a show he writes, directs and produces? That show is terrible! In picture quality and in dialogue. And it basically is a representation of his earlier movies.

Angela Basset is one of my favorite actresses and I’m so happy to see her in a new film and a Tyler Perry one at that! The Browns are Perry’s most unique and hilarious characters
People shouldn’t be hating on Tyler, he’s making some nice yet hilarious (and serious) movies and keeping the talented Black actors and actresses in mind. He’s not Spike Lee or John Singleton, but he’s getting there, I mean damn he’s only been getting exposure in the public eye (Like him being on Regis & Kelly/Today Show exposure) for a few years and taking a play to screen isn’t an easy task. I respect the man’s talent and drive to create something that can entertain his audience. If you don’t like the stuff, don’t hate and don’t put down money to see it. I rather see Tyler Perry’s movies than that country shit of “Who’s Your Caddy” and the overplayed street dance/prove to the world how good I am at dancing movies of “How She Move” and “You Got Served”…yuck…

I dont think anyone that says t.p. movies are overrated and repetitve are haters. Obviously, I feel the same way. Yes, they are good movies. But when is he going to produce something that is Oscar worthy or atleast Golden Globe worthy? I have seen all his films, and I plan on going to see this one. But I would be lying if I said they werent all similar somehow;
1. man/woman actin up
2. man/woman fight the feelings of being in love
3. somebody has some insecurities
ALL of his movies have this and ya know it!

He needs to learn his craft more, maybe he needs to see movies like DO the Right Thing ,No Country For Old Men or there Will Be Blood. Not to copy them , but learn what great filmaking is. That way he can put his creativeness to the use of putting great Black actors/actresses in quality movies. I’m sorry , but his films are just mediocre, that’s just my opinion. Or maybe he shoulod get someone else to write the scripts.

David Fincher’s direction style is nice and I liked that one movie Se7en.
Zodiac was a hot ass movie, creepy as hell. When that one movie “Children of Men” came out I didn’t know neither did I care what it was but when I saw it, I was like dayum! This movie is a beast.
“This Christmas” had that tired old cliche family holiday plot line but added some better stuff to it, but some of the actors (Chris Brown) were subpar and I think they should have re-casted his character to an actual actor.
That “How She Move” movie might prove me wrong, cause I was almost certain it was gonna be trash but we’ll see. Maybe they might actually get a dance movie right this time, cause “You Got Served” sucked and “Stomp The Yard” sucked.

Critics have even downed his direction style, he films his movies in a grainy texture is reminiscent of one of those reject cameras from the BET network.
I don’t think he should be filming any movies out of his element until he hones whatever craft hes trying to perfect now. I’ll be dayumed if I go out and support a Madea murder mystery, where “a wife divorces her billionaire husband and shes later killed and now her sassy family must find out who is the culprit”…the formula is getting redundant.

I’m sorry I’m sick of people saying that we are ONLY portrayed as Thugs and Pimps or whatever. Things are changing and White actors play bad characters and so do Blacks. Black actors play good characters and so do Whites. It is good to show your variability or a range as an actor, which is why I like Denzel he does not ALWAYS have to be the good guy he can play good or bad or morally ambigous. So stop criticizing actors for making ambitious film choices. Johnny Depp is considered a great Versatile actor and he just played a DEMON BARBER and got an Oscar nod for it. Marlon Brando played a MAFIA BOSS and won an Oscar for it. Kathy Bates played a psychopathic lady in MISERY and won an Oscar for it. Javier Barder plays a psychopath in No Country for Old Men and WILL win that oscar in february. Jamie Foxx played Ray Charles who was on drugs and fortunately recovered and won an Oscar for it ( not that Ray Charles is bad, but I’m making a point).Besides it is ALWAYS more fun to play the bad guy and Denzel said that Alonzo form training day was the most fun to play out of ALL of his characters.

Ok, here it goes. This is what I think happened: For a few years, Angela Basset was choosy about roles, especially after Monster’s Ball, saying I wouldn’t do this or that. I did see her in a few blockbusters, but her roles were minor. Roles are slim for black people in Hollywood, so I think she finally had to suck it up and take the bite to get that check. Hey, it is what it is. No doubt, she is such a talented and beautiful woman. And speaking of movies, maybe it’s just me, but I thought Great Debators was just ok, I’m sorry. Good positive message, but just ok. I think that a lot of black people, and yes, I am black, sometimes automatically will say something is good just to support black arts/film. I’m sorry, I’m just big on interest and quality. I always prefer independent movies anyway, so that could have something to do w/it.

Before I say anything, let me say I live in alpharetta, about 6 miles from Tyler Perry. I’m glad he’s getting his money. More power to him. yadda yadda yadda…but I think his movie’s suck. SUCK.
He needs help with his writing. They have these long drawn out intros, the climax comes and the movie is over literally 5-10 minutes later. Everything gets wrapped up with a visit to church, or an old person making a speech and all is right in his movie world again. Too much is left unsaid and you are just supposed to guess, and the hints are way to subtle i.e diary of a mad black woman, and the drug addicted wife. The plots need to be developed more. It’s too simple. I’m not asking for some crazy Momento type confusion, but come on.

People are HILARIOUS with the negativity. It’s OBVIOUS some of you don’t know anything about Tyler’s movies and VISION. His movies seem repeptitive because some CLASSIC THEMES NEED TO BE ADDRESSED AND WORKED ON in the community. It’s not ALWAYS about single mothers, this is only the SECOND time!!!
1. Akeelah and the bee, was about a smart black kid who was seen as “too strange” by her own community, and you people KNOW when a black kid is smart they’re often tagged as “acting white”. It was about a black child ACCEPTING her intelligence regardless of what people said. ANGELA BASSETT WAS IN THIS MOVIE TOO!!!
2. Diary of a mad black woman, was about a woman leaving an abusive relationship and the fact that another man can heal a wounded woman cause there are good men out there. It also showed how people don’t appreciate a good person (good woman in the movie) and instead of cherishing the person they mistreat them and take them for granted.
3. Madea’s Fam Reunion, talked about a LOT of things : INCEST within families which is taboo, domestic violence again (necessary!!), children raised by fucked up parents and taught that they’re only good for getting laid or sell dope, that’s when Madea tell the child she can be whatever she wants to be, the importance of learning our HISTORY (Maya Angelou and Cicely Tyson were in the movie for Goodness Sake!!!), women who choose men based on money and how this is NOT the right thing, men taking CHARGE when it comes to raising a family, and he showed that just because a woman or a man had a child didn’t mean they weren’t interesting and good enough to date. Both the man and the woman were single parents.
4. Why did I get married, was about issues within marriages. How a man would rather run after the trash than working things out with his good wife and how he’s gonna lose everything and regret it, and a whole lot of different cases of different couples.
5. Daddy’s Little Girl, proved that JUST CAUSE YOU’RE FROM THE GHETTO DOESN’T MEAN YOU’RE WORTHLESS, matter of fact it was about a responsible father from the hooda. And that money doesn’t make the man so a woman making more money isn’t reason enough to end a relationship.
6. Meet The Brown, talks about single parenthood AGAIN. So what? Do you know how many women are single parents? This needs to be talked about. It talks about brothers selling dope to get by, I’m glad he’s talking about this subject as well, necessary! The importance of FAMILY, who can be tired of hearing about this?
You have black men being showed as good men, good fathers, good husbands and soul healers, black women being portrayed as hardworking mothers, wonderful wives and women as a whole, black families healing and staying united, FINALLY someone who doesn’t portray us pimps and hoes and folks already complain. YES there are better film makers than Tyler, but there are less good ones too. If he’s the “Christian Film Maker” let him be that, there’s a public for it!! Just like some people only do horror movies, let him do christian movies. He’s still YOUNG and has time to learn, he’s already doing a great job, giving black hollywood JOBS, Angela Bassett TWICE…hello? Hollywood doesn’t even give her credit. Big up to Tyler, he’s doing something right and screw whatever naysayers have to say!!

Thank you #83 Chante, you made a lot of good points. Tyler Perry mixes in comedy with valuable lessons. But some people see Madea and automatically think the movie is not good. And I am glad to see Angela Bassett working. I don’t see her in those “good Oscar movies” They aren’t thinking about her sadly. Tyler Perry recognizes her talent, I bet thats why she has the role.

To #32, people are not “hating” its just that while I as a black woman support Tyler and his work, there are many other stories that can be told about Black people that have more to offer than what #28 summarized…which you have to admit has been Tyler’s fomula for the majority of his movies with the exception of “Why Did I Get Married?” There are many other stories of substance that provide more value: Antwon Fisher, The Great Debaters, Pride, etc….Our whole existence does not revolve around broken relationships, lack of finances and single parenthood. While those stories need to be told, they can be told with more grace and creativity of plot.

As far as people downing Tyler Perry for his “genre” of movies, some of them might have the same basic theme, but the characters bring it to life in a different ways for each film. I remeber a time in the 90’s after Boys in the Hood came out, every damn movie with a black person in it was about gangbanging. when there is a formula that works, people will cash in on it until the movie going public gets tired of it. I think that we should be happy that there are films where we are the main characters and the themes/storyline is positive. sure there are other aspects of the black experience that can be explored, but we have to prove to Hollywood that these movies are profitable and that is what Tyler Perry is doing. he is making room for other black filmakers who come behind him. so instead of us complaining about the movies he makes, be more subjective and look in depth for the meaning behind them.

Tyler Perry is one of the few black directors/writers/producers out there. So what, all of his films are based off his plays. At least he’s not portraying us as pimps, whores, lazy, or uneducated.
And why are black people the ONLY group of people who have a problem with supporting someone simply b/c they are black? Even when they are trying to do something positive?

I’m pleasantly surprised, it might actually be good. I think he’s using the same themes over and over again, but I do like his positivity, so I won’t complain too much, he’s coming up and hopefully he’ll get better, he’s really not been in the movie game all that long, there is a HUUUUGGGE difference in directing a play and direction/casting/editing/producing a movie, so he’ll have some bumps along the way, MOST director mainstream or not have had some past failures before they really start doing well, plus I don’t believe he’s had any formal film school training so he’s aight with me. I take some of his movies and plays and I leave some. I absolutely HATED the play Meet the Browns, but somehow the screen adaptation of it, has peaked my interest.

I think the biggest problem with his plays and movies for me is I do not see myself in these movies or plays. I do not see people I know. Alot of movies starring blacks and latinos are about struggle and hardship and jacked up lives. That is not what I know. I came from a home with two college educated parents, brothers and sisters who aren’t drug addicts, who got married had kids, did the whole american dream. It’s hard to relate to, and they just aren’t funny.
I wish it wasn’t so much a black and white thing. I understand this is a site for black stars, but everything isn’t for everybody. There are some white screenwriters/directors/actors, whose movies I don’t particularly take a liking to that have similar plots in each movie.
I am not a black woman hating on a black man. I am a woman disliking someone’s style of art.

Tyler is a great storyteller, and that is why I love his movies. I don’t need to always see some super hyped up, make believe futuristic epic, impossible story, sometimes it is welcoming to see things I can actually relate to that crack me the hell up…like that last movie…when Jill Scott bust ol boy upside the head…that is classic and has won a Mekey Oscar!

Cosign completely w/ all ‘Alleged’ comments!!!
@ 82 - You made some very valid points about Tyler’s films, however, all we (as the consumer) are asking for is films w/ creativity and innovational ideas…and not just films that affect the black community. It does get redundant at times because everyday on the blogs/BET/black magazines etc., we hear all day about the very things that TP’s films are about. Sometimes it just gets irritating.
Big ups to ‘Alleged’ for not being afraid to speak up on TP’s films, and doing it in a constructive critism type of way!
Oh and btw, I saw, ‘The Great Debaters,’ and I have to admit that the storyline was lacking, but to see all the fresh ‘new’ black actors was definitely a breath of fresh air! I look forward to seeing all three of those young actors in great films to come!

Tyler is one of the only black directors and writters that I know of that is promoting healthy, normal lifestyles from the black community. As intellegent as you seem to be to me, I just don’t think that you can relate to his films because of their content. You said one thing that I believe to be true!! All you people that talk so negative about his movies..don’t go see it…or become a writer and show something better…obviously the box office shows how great he is doing with or without you. Alleged I’m with you. Our acceptance of mediocre quality simply because it was made by a black man fuels bullshit. That’s why no one respects the movies that come out of our community. We have to set higher standards. Why Did I Get Married was Tyler’s best work and that bit the hell out of The Big Chill, a superior movie. He’s not original, he just makes the same jokes and y’all keep supporting it. Furthermore, I’m really damn tired of him raping The Color Purple for comedic use anyone who’s actually read the book (damn the movie because it’s a load of patriarchal tripe) knows what a travesty it is for that material to be used in that way.

this back and forth bickering about black movies and Tyler Perry relates so much to the saying that whites have brainwashed blacks to believe another black can’t do anything good. It’s different and it’s black so what, wasn’t Spike Lee another black producer, director, and writer doing the same for his people and didn’t people have the same thing to say about him. I support black movies so what, white movies aren’t no better and definitely don’t put us in a light that I’d like to see us in. Killing one another, putting one another down, backstabbing and backbiting one another and they always have us somewhere beneath them rather than equivalent to or above in power or stature. And if they do beleive me it’s not a movie of great substnce. So HELL yeah I’ll take Tyler Perry over them anyday. And they have producers and directors and writers that duplicate their work over and over again as well. So why hate? If you don’t support that’s fine, but don’t put him down without looking at all the producers, writers and directors in the game who does the same thing whether black or white.

Deep Sigh….really deep “ok..I get it now” sigh..epiphianic moment sigh……….
I’ve been on these blogs interacting for about 5 months now NOT JUST CONCRETELOOP…and I am finally going to accept a reality that I have been kicking and screaming and fighting against for years.
For the most part, “niggas HATE niggas” (sorry for those of you who are offended by that word. I’m just disgusted and I’m quoting the Last Poets….
Every single blog has page after page of black people being totally critical of prominent blacks. Our own damn “elder politicians” have so much jealousy and hatred that they are out in public, “airing our dirty laundry” hating on Obama.
It is too depressing for me. I don’t hate Black Folk. I love Black Folk. I’ve rarely met another black person who I didn’t feel was my brother or sister (at least in the beginning) and treated them as such.
Love you guys…but this sh!!@# is just…deep sigh. I finally GET IT. And I can’t change it. Damn.
I don’t thnk Tyler Perry is writing Oscar Worthy movies, but I don’t thnk that is his goal. Comedies are rarely expected to rise to that calibur. What he IS doing though, is giving us an entertaining alternative to the “boys in the hood” syndrome. We arent’ all gansters, pimps and hoes. And honestly, a LOT of us spend a lot of time in church, and god KNOWS that whether you are religious or not, americans in general, NOT just black folk, could use a good dose of morals and values these days.
I have never encountered a lot of negativity from black folk on a personal level. So I guess I’ve been naive in thinking that we were one big happy family.
SH! t is tiresome. Draining and Tiresome. I get it now.

I like him a lot as well. He is one of the few movie writers who actually makes me laugh AND feel good after the movie. I love the MAdea character. My husband does too. I love seeing that in every movie and play, while there might be a black male character who is all screwed up, there is also always the “knight in shining armor”.
I have DVDs of all the plays and movies you mentioned. I’m proud of Mr. Perry. Why did I Get Married made me feel so happy when I left, just because it showed the reality that there are successful black people who aren’t stuggling in the projects. That is not to say there is ANYTHNG wrong with people who are, life is real. But it does give all of us a vision in our minds that enables us to strive towards something better. You have to be able to conceptualize a thing before you can achieve it.
I will support Mr. Perry. I’m proud of him., and Angela Basset is one of the most beautiful women, black or white, in Hollywood. She is a phenomenal actress and I can’t wait to see what dimensions she adds to his moviesl.
