Just as I suspected, there were hold-ups to Jennifer Hudson’s much anticipated debut album. Apparently, 2007 was supposed to be her year, but the label has scrapped the album that she’s previously recorded and Clive Davis has put the J. Records signee back into the studio to trade up. It seems as though the team didn’t think that the material was strong enough and that consumers wouldn’t purchase the project.
Ryan Tedder, front man of Mosley Music Group band OneRepublic, has spoken out about the state of Hudson’s album, considering that he’s been signed on to helm some writing credits now that Clive is taking the album in a new direction.
“They made half an album and ended up scrapping it. Clive — wisely, I think — said, ‘No one’s going to buy this. We’re trying to turn her into Aretha Franklin, and that’s not realistic,’ ” Tedder said. “They scrapped a bunch of songs and started fresh. I heard a Timbaland song that was by far the best song she’s done. I do wish, and I know the label wishes, that this album had come out six months ago. But Clive’s smart. He didn’t want to just put out a crap album just because of the momentum.
I knew it. I just had a feeling about this. We’ll see though. It has been said that Jennifer’s album is be released sometime during the year’s second music quarter. But they may have more work cut out for them than that think. I think Ryan was right when he said that the label wishes the album had come out 6 months ago, because frankly, I’m uninterested.
KELLY ROWLAND UPDATES
The release date for the rerelease Kelly Rowland’s Ms. Kelly album was confirmed on BBC Radio 1 yesterday during their chart countdown. On the reworked album, Kelly has released her first single with Gym Class Heroes’ Travis McCoy, “Daylight.” The set will also contain productions from J.R. Rotem, who is responsible for Sean Kingston’s mega-hit, “Beautiful Girls,” as well as Nate “Danjahandz” Hills, who has produced along side Timbaland and his responsible for Britney’s “Gimme More.”
Kelly, who is promoting her third single in the US is doing wonderfully overseas. “Work” is the current single both here and overseas. As stated in a post earlier today, Kelly has made comments about the flop of her sophomore set, as well as the rerelease.
“The sales weren’t as good as I wanted them to be and to be honest, I did feel sad about that for a little while. I felt that the industry was fickle and for a minute, I felt like I didn’t want to be a part of that any more. I feel that the label should have promoted it more the first time around. But they’re excited now, so that’s all that counts.”
Honestly, I feel bad for Kelly too. I hope that Michelle Williams doesn’t fall victim to the same fate, with her third solo album, which will be a contemporary R&B release. “Stop This Car” is supposedly the first single, but randomly got great feedback.
LIL’ KIM LEAVES ATLANTIC RECORDS

According to BillBoard, rapper Lil’ Kim has left Atlantic Records and intends to release her upcoming as-yet-untitled album independently.
On DJ Kay Slay’s Sirius Satellite Radio show Streetsweeper Radio last week, Kim said that she has no ill feelings toward Atlantic Records. She said she was afraid to release her music independently several years ago but is now more comfortable in her knowledge of the music business to work her project. It’s rumored that the MC will join Capitol Music Group’s independent arm, Imperial Records, however Kim’s management was unavailable for comment.
Lil’ Kim’s upcoming album, which was originally supposed to drop in February, is now set for April or May 2008.
It seems as though a lot of artists have been talking about going the independent these days. I think that route is better suited for artist who are already established and know that they can move numbers, so I think this might do well for Lil’ Kim. I’m excited about her new project, ’cause I’ve been loving all her remixes. We’ll see!

clive trying to make jhud into another aretha is noo suprise, he did the same thing with leona lewis tryin to make her into another mariah but it just isnt a good method! the reason why aretha n mariah are soo great is because they are unique, theres no point trying to copy other artists.

why not? With today’s technology who needs majors. I bet you itunes is the most successful sub-independent label (despite being onine so you don’t get the inlay card etc)
No one needs an inlay card or need a physical CD anymore. Just give us the music and we will pay for the download and play it on our mp3 players. I mean, we read and here so much about the musicians online via their myspace page or on the blogs by the time the CD comes out, whoever they said thank you to in their “thanks yous” might be an enemy/frenemy/dead whatever……
And on the internet you can have worldwide one time releases and CA$H in.
And all you ned to do is stop spending money on manufacturing and spend the money on advertising (such as banners on CL / Crunk and Disorderly /allhiphop etc) and marketing sending mastered material to radio stations via your own production/label.

After reading Kelly’s interview yesterday I have a new found R.E.S.P.E.C.T. for her… No more sly remarks from me because the SISTA seems to really have it together despite the haters… and from one SISTA to another, I will stand strong and support another!

I’m excited for JHud’s album…Clive Davis is indeed a very smart man and known for bringing out hit albums…so I wont’ be surprised at a chart topping album coming from her. I agree that everyone was looking at her as a young Aretha and he needed to change that…as far as Kelly goes…I wish her the best and I knew that Mathew Knowles didn’t promote her CD nearly as much as Beyonce’s…I wish KElly would realize she needs new management that wouldn’t mind pushing the extremes for her.
So glad we didn’t end up with an album that sounded as if she was 40. I’ll wait to hear some quality music. I know she has a very strong mature voice, but she’s young and I’d hate to be completely bored by her album.

Lil kim, I don’t really have a comment, but to say that I ran across her video some how the other day for crush on you…that took me back. She looked real then. As in real facial features, real slightly chubby tummy, but she looked ….ahem good.

We anticipated her breaking out solo, when we heard the song she did with Avant-Seperate—-So when her first cd came out, we all rushed out to buy it–Put it in the cd player–and were hugely disappointed-She was obviously aiming for pop-mainstream–When she is a ballad R&B artist…After that, everybody i know was over it…. She should get over it too.

I think she was reaching, and way to far out. I think now she might have more of a grasp of her sound though. Well, I can only hope.

I have heard many things about JHuds album over the last few months, heard she needed vocal training did not do well in studio recording movie soundtracks are recorded differently, this slant about her being the next Aretha new to me she never sounded like Aretha to me never thought there was much soul in her style, nice church sound or lounge sound. Unless they were waiting on the possible movie role and then promote an album, I even heard, Clive was not pleased with her live performances either to promote an album. Thank God she has that Oscar, hopefully that and all the other awrards keep her employed in this industry.

I’m really not all that excited to hear an album from J-Hud. According, to this message board, I guess I’m the only one, lol. I’m just really not a big fan of her vocals. She sounds a bit too over the top when she sings, and it just ruins songs. For instance, like that duet she did w/ Neyo, she completely killed it! And, not in a good way! Her vocals are just way too over the top, and unnecessary.
Kelly Rowland…awwhh where do I start…lol! Kelly’s first cd, ‘Simply Deep’, was pretty deceit, it had a lot of nice mellow tracks and the lyrics were really good. However, her latest effort, ‘Ms Kelly,’ was pure garbage!!!! I knew it was gonna be garbage just from the first single, ‘Like This,’ sometimes I just think Kelly tries too hard to be something she’s not.
