Here is Erykah Badu’s official album cover (courtesy of Okayplayer.com). The dope cover was designed by the talented emek.

Erykah will be releasing “New Amerykah” on February 26th and I know we already posted her newest track “The Healer” (produced by Madlib) in the ‘New Music Review’ but here it is again for all the Erykah fans.

You can also peep some more emek’s artwork of Erykah Badu after the cut.

don’t know the first one, but the rest are “Allah, Jehova,/Yaweh, Dios, Maat Jah/Rastafari, fire, dance, sex, music, HIP HOP” She’s basically invoking the names of God through different religions and showing how Hip Hop crosses all barriers, from religion to hood (i.e. my niggas) to government. Hip Hop is the best place to birth a revolution because it’s everywhere. Ma is spitting supreme knowlege.

I used to think the people here were real tastemakers. If yall like that stuff, labels, artists and industry types are going to stop listening to you. Right now they kind of take into consideration what yall think, but this bind love for Badu is pathetic. stay focused yal

to Hater.com, haven’t you heard? Force feeding people shit on the radio ain’t working anymore. The most it’s good for is selling ringtones. People want that real shit. Badu will sell because she has an audience and over 10 years in the game. Oh and to clarify, it’s the intro, hence, it’s not meant for radio. Furthermore, I could give a fuck whether music is radio-friendly, I care about quality, point blank and Badu always brings that. Now drink a warm glass of shut the fuck up.

89. CONCIENCIA

THAT COVER GIVES ME THE CREEPS.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m itching all over. WTF is thaton the left side at the bottom of her hair. It looks like a unborn baby!

=======> Conciencia, I guess the cover is about all the problems of our world, you can see on the far right handcuffs, you can see the symbol of aids at the top and many other stuff, the unborn babies (on the left and right) is probably because she doesn’t believe in abortion. But I feel the same way as you do. I love me some Erykah but the 5%ter philosophy frightens me and that’s what she shares with the world. I’ve read about their beliefs and rituals and thanks but no thanks. The album cover is well done but it’s creepy, it’s done by Emek and if you check out his artwork this is some real creepy shit he’s doing, death themes. She’s a “positive” person yet associates herself with people having a negative artistic universe. I don’t get it.

That being said, I will honestly say that the song is pure genius. But she’s on some Scientology-ish shit.

91.

Forest

Friday, January 25, 2008 /

How she on Scientology ish? Those cats believe in aliens and gang of dumb ish that has nothing to do with what her message is. While I don’t embrace NGE philosophy fully, you can’t deny that a whopping majority of the world are sheep following blindly and that there IS a small minority that profits from that.
Erykah’s not affiliated with any religion. She’s basically saying rise above religion to recognize that there is only one Most High, no matter what name you use, and to unite to fix the things wrong with this world, hence The Healer. She uses Hip Hop as the medium because the music and culture cross all boundaries. You can go anywhere in the world and amongst any religion and find Hip Hop. It’s all ready penetrated all barriers. It’s time for someone to use it to create some good.
As for her dealing with “negative” artists, well no one can be a 100% positive all the time that’s not realistic. Plus, you can’t fix the things that are wrong if you never address them.

93.

100% Honest

Friday, January 25, 2008 /

Forest, I didn’t say she was in Scientology, I said “Scientology-ish” as in WEIRD.

Also, she IS a 5%ter just like Rakim, Nas and the rest. There are 5%ter stuff in her artwork from her old cds. Some people in TX know this. Maybe you need to read this too http://www.amazon.com/Fiv...qid=1201277803&sr=8-5
I never said she had to be 100% positive we all have flaws but some are “rather” positive or “rather” negative (example : Snoop/50 Cent), Emek is rather negative so I find it weird that she’d work with him. Just like I’d find it weird for India.Arie to work with some Gothic artist.

I understood her message in The Healer and even said the song was genius, but I’m saying all in all, peeps can take what they want to from her but shouldn’t think every single thing she says is law, I know some who do and that makes them the very sheeps she talks about in her music, except that they are HER sheeps.

94.

Forest

Friday, January 25, 2008 /

I’m in TX I’ve actually several conversations with the chick and while she embraces part of their philosophy she is NOT a 5%er. She’s moved away from organized religion towards an amalgamation of what she deems spiritually important to her. As far as it being weird, it doesn’t seem that weird to me, but I can understand how it would be to some. So no arguments on that. I think her motivation for working “negative” artists may be to restore balance. There is a place for negative as well as positive in the ultimate scheme of things. I am, however, speculating on that.

95.

100% Honest

Friday, January 25, 2008 /

Alright Forest. I take it she used to be and isn’t anymore then, left the movement cos she didn’t find what she was looking for or was just curious about it. I knew about it specifically from someone from TX who is known (in the black community) but I’ll leave it at that. Apart from that, I respect your opinion.

96.

Forest

Friday, January 25, 2008 /

Oh, no doubt she explored it. Along with a whole lot of other ish. As you stated, the influence is extremely noticeable in her lyrics. All I’m saying is that it’s not the be-all end-all of her spirituality. It’s all peace though. That’s just my chick. So I’ll always come through and comment on her.

Forest I don’t know what alternate universe of music you live in but for the artists and the people who write, produce, and manufacture music, radio still really matters. If things were as you said they were artist would simply finance their own projects and give the music away to downloaders like yourself for free. But they don’t because they want to make money with their gifts. Even the artist that put off the image that they are extra artistic and not driven by the money and commercialism of music, are the main ones that go hard for their radio play. Writers make money everytime the records spin on the radio. Artist like Badu who write their own music really want radio play because it helps them maintain a profile that allows them to tour and get more money. No artist can survive without a hit record. Radio determines what a hit is, based on the amount of listeners that want to hear the record. Radio can only force a record onto the public for a few days before the publics desire to hear the record kicks in. If Badu’s entire album sounds like that foolishness posted here then make sure you go to her show when she comes to your town because you won’t being hearing on your favorite station

100.

101.

Jennifer

Friday, January 25, 2008 /

Hater.com: You sound soo naive to say that radio is really where it’s at. Radio’s full of shyt…they use payola, or I should say, “playover.” That’s why I can’t listen to it anymore. They play the same songs over and over and over and over and over again until the stuff’s so ubiquitous that you can’t help but to like it. The internet is where it’s at and many artists (Janelle Monae, Colbie Calliot) understand that and try to use it to their advantage…Badu is one of the few artists that edutate (that’s entertain and educate) She is an artist of superb caliber that writes, arranges and composes all her stuff. She’s put 10 years in the game and has a solid fan base and respect. Her album, which will be of substance like her others, will do just fine. I’ll take quality over quantity anyday. And let me find out that she’ll be at my town for tour, I’ll buy a ticket to her concert before I pay my rent! And I know who’s record I’m buying Feb. 26.

Hater.com

Jennifer I respect your opinions on this matter, but I disagree. I understand that you are a Badu fan, I am too. I’m not as big as you are but I like her. I just think some artist get so out there they forget how to make hit records. Badu made hit records in her career that did not compromise her creative integrity. What she did on the record posted is not consistent with how she became known in the first place. Using your example Janelle Monae is a artsit that you might like, Colbie Callat is an aritst who has a legit radio hit right now. Do you think Colbie would trade places with Jannelle? Absolutely not!!! as far as the internet “its not where its at” because artists careers are being shortened partly because the internet. Most people who are grabbing records off the internet are grabbing for free and the artists and everyone else are not getting the compensation due to them. There could be an aritst who has about 375K listeners but if only 120k people might actually buy the record the label might drop that artist and you never hear them again. That’s why the internet is NOT where its at. If your song is poppin on the radio then the label knows that they can continue to invest in exposing that artist. If you care about the Internet artist that you mess with you better try to get their stuff on the radio because no artist can survive without a hit. Have you ever spent time with one of these artist who are not getting airplay and exposure. They are frustrated in many cases, don’t get paid a lot of money to do a show and are faced with tough decisions daily about whether they can continue to support their own project. While the downloader is bumpin their music and blogging about it that artist goes hungry. The internet is only where it at for people who want to steal music

105.

Jennifer

Saturday, January 26, 2008 /

Hater.com:I feel you on some things like the artists should get their compensation from internet sales…I totally agree…but I meant that the Internet has revolutionized the way we listen to music…just look at how we’re hearing this clip of Badu’s intro. Now granted, GIlles Peterson from Radio One exclusively played it on his radio show, but the world is listening to it online, and mainly online. That’s what I meant. And let me add that I don’t advocate illegally downloading at all! Trust me on that one! But how can you say that “what she did on this record posted is not consistent with how she became known in the first place?” This record is different, nothing like what you hear on the radio, not that I expect to hear it on my local station anyways…That’s ok. I didn’t expect to hear “Green Eyes” on my radio station neither but it still was a gem. But doing music like this is EXACTLY how she became known in the first place, lol. “On & On” was so fresh, mystical and although a lot of people didn’t know she was shouting out the Gods and Earths, it was a warm welcome to an artists who changed the landscape of R&B, soul and music in general. Badu is not a safe artist like your Alicias or Marys or Keyshias. You think it’s horrible and that’s totally OK, but what you have to understand is that NOTHING AND NOONE SOUNDS LIKE ERYKAH BADU. She takes things to a whole nother level and is in competition only with herself. No one , not even Jill Scott (much respect) is in Erykah’s lane. Chick’s a genius. No, you won’t hear this on the radio but so what?? Who cares?? I’m sure she has other singles besides “Honey” lined up for airplay. Chick’s a goddess. Like I said, she’ll do just fine….I respect your opinion and all but people are force fed garbage on the radio and when real stuff that makes you think come out, they don’t know how to react to it.
