NEWS: HAITI’S POOREST FORCED TO EAT DIRT

Thursday, January 31, 2008

(Photo: AP)

As food prices soar, impoverished Haitians are resorting to eating cookies made of mud.

Made from dirt, salt and vegetable shortening, the cookies - which are regularly used by pregnant women and children as an antacid and source of calcium - have become a regular meal for Haitians desperate to satisfy hunger.

In Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, 80 percent of the population lives on less than $2 a day. The mud cookies sell for around five cents each, compared to 60 cents for two cups of rice.

What is the U.S. doing to help? Rep. William Thomas [R-CA] introduced the Haitian Hemispheric Opportunity through Partnership Encouragement (HOPE) Act of 2006 as part of the tax-and-trade bill. The bill never became law. Fortunately, that may have been a good thing. The Haiti Progres stated that the bill failed to imposes labor standards instead imposing patronizing, and burdensome conditions on the Haitian people:

Although the undersigned Haitian activists welcomes the US bipartisan desire to assist Haiti with job creation that is evidenced by the passage of the legislation, we continue to denounce the legislation’s neoliberal conditions that enrich only the few while further impoverishing the many; its failure to ensure labor standards, workers’ rights, enforcement and employer accountability.

According to Dan Beeton, International Communications Coordinator for the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) in Washington D.C.:

“Throughout Haiti’s history, the U.S. has usually been a bad neighbor, invading and occupying the country several times, propping up dictators, and at times blocking economic assistance to the country. A number of economically damaging policy prescriptions have originated in Washington as well, including privatization of state industries and the promotion of export processing zones that hamper the development of Haitian industry and generate little revenue…Considering the history of the U.S.’ relationship with Haiti, Americans owe it to the Haitian people to support their right to organize independent trade unions and advocate for policies that will foster real and lasting economic development.”

For ways you can help Haiti, visit the Lambi Fund of Haiti.

this is really bad. the U.S. needs to do something because this is ridiculous having to eat sand for nurishment. We as americans don’t know how good we have it. we think we live in poverty. What we as americans call poverty is not poverty. What they are living though in haiti is poverty.

People please do your research before posting garbage like this. First off I’m Haitian, the economy in my country is bad, but not bad enough were people are forced to eat “mud pies” give me a break. Their’s countries far worst off than Haiti and they would never even think of printing this mess about. Our problem is besides wyclef Jean, we don’t have a strong political leader to be our voices so we can be heard and fight to keep things like this from being said about Haiti my beautiful homeland. let’s not forget On January 1, 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines declared the colony’s independence as the world’s first black republic. so a little if not a whole lot of respect is due to my homeland. So please don’t believe nor support articles like this. For proof and pictures on how much of a B.S. this article is please visit Wyclefjean.com or Yele.org.

As a child of Haiti, I read this earlier this week and was sadden and renewed my vow put forth my personal efforts to use my talents and career to help Haiti. Haiti doesn’t need god to have mercy on them, the US or its citizen’s pity. It needs justice and it needs it children of the diaspora not to forget where they came from. Many rich Haitians in Haiti and living in America have rastaveks, basically children slaves given to them or found on the street, working for them. We need new people with education to come and over turn the system of poverty and corruption. Haiti’s politicians including Preval, help the South American run drugs in America. America, the new system of globalization, the Dominican republic, France and Canada have all took its turn creating lasting upheaval. We need to hold these countries accountable, stop the paternalism and create a joint effort aide.

The government can’t even take care of their OWN citizens, so how in the hell do we expect them to help others?

As stated before, the US needs to focus on getting their shit straight before trying to help others. I know that statement may sound harsh and cold hearted but it’s the truth.

May God Bless those in Haiti.

Wow we don’t need Oprah or any of these celebrities to help out the Haitians. We can hlp by donating if every Black American donated money, I bet you that our donations would reach higher than an a oprah donation. Lets not rely on these celebs and rely on what we can do as black folks to help out. We stood up and join Jena 6 and donated money to that in a heartbeat and we can do the same to Haiti. My friend is in the black student union and they are trying to prepare for a winter ball and I think they should cancel it because they aren’t prepared. Instead I’ll give them ideas of preparing a fund for the Haitians we should all do something you guys this sickening and heart wrenching come on these people are eating sand cookies :(

@ # 8 Why are you always calling Oprahs name.
You hate on her most of the time.
Why don’t you holler at Beyonce or Rhihanna or others who behind you are always over here kissing and always bragging how muchmoney they got. Why don’t you holler at Jay-Z he your boy he got enough money to get people drunk and shake their booties.
You don’t even respect Oprah and always talking about what she should be doing get the people you will killl for if someone says something you don’t agree with about them to do something. The next time you buy some some otf their name brand stuff you will die for think about sending the money to Haiti yourself.
oprh has done enough and most of you young folk have no respect for her and she has probably helped Haiti she does not boast about all of he giving.

So, so shocked!

Thursday, January 31, 2008 /

I don’t know about these mud cookies or eating mud but my mom just came back from Haiti and she said she couldn’t even afford to eat. She stayed in the country and she sent someone to go shopping at the market for her with what she thought was more than enough and was so surprised at the little amount of food that they came back with. Families are struggling to find food to eat and are resorting to a lot of things but MUD, I’m finding that hard to believe. Sorry.

JUDAH

Thursday, January 31, 2008 /

In my opinion, one thing that we as black people need to do is establish a sense of reality. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere . That’s a fact, not an opinion, not rhetoric, and not propaganda. Alot of Americanized Haitian brothers and sisters feel the need to “represent” for their country when Haiti is put in a bad light and they only end up looking overly proud and delusional. I see the same delusional spirit in American blacks, West Indian blacks, and Hispanics that want to “hope” that “one day” we’ll have power and prestige in America. At the end of the day, a segment of the people probably are eating mud pies and dirt cookies in Haiti. You can act like they’re not, you can be embarassed that they are, you can regurgitate all the Haitian celebrities and historical achievements that you can muster. It doesn’t mean a damn thing. The Haitians have an even deeper and more powerful history than what anyone has alluded to, but it has little bearing on what is going on now if our people are not willing to acknowledge it.

I followed #155’s advice and went to yele.org and all I saw was reinforcement of the FACT that Haiti is destitute. Am I supposed to believe that those brothers and sisters are on the upswing because they’re wearing Catholic school uniforms? That’s indicative of their indoctrination into paganism. No disrespect to anyone else; you can send $1 or $1,000,000, it either won’t get there or it won’t have an effect because if the people in power were truly concerned about them, the people of Haiti wouldn’t be in the state that they’re in. The biggest scams on the planet earth are these “fundraisers” for the poverty-stricken. If a man robs you of everything that you are and have and then comes back 50 years later to give you crumbs, does that make him magnanimous? If we’re thankful for those crumbs, what does that make us? Then the man that robs you asks you to send him money so that he can possibly donate a portion of it back to you. Black people really have to analyze and understand the level in which we are subliminally mocked before we can make any real change. Furthermore, American blacks only control 50cents for every $100 U.S. so it makes not sense to look down on the Haitians when, pound for pound, the American blacks are probably poorer that them.

I’m not going to go into the Toussaint L’ouverture stuff because I personally believe that he was in cahoots with the white man, but that’s a whole other story. As the caucasian’s own self-condemnatory history books will tell you, they repeatedly invaded Haiti, they’ve cut down all the trees which is why the island floods and drowns hundreds or Haitians and Dominicans whenever there’s a pronounced rainstorm, and there are U.S. military bases already all over the island. America is fully aware of the economic condition of the Haitians. They’re down there to act as if they’re assisting the people medically when in fact, they are the ones giving the Haitians the AIDS virus. It’s caucasian policy to act concerned about the other races when the actual intent is to slowly; methodically, destroy the history, culture, and eventually the existence of said race. Nothing can be too obvious. The Marines have clubs on the island where they only allow light-skinned Haitian prostitutes in. The torture that Abner Louima was forced to endure in which an NYPD “officer” sodomized him in a police bathroom with a broken broomstick (perforating his colon) is policy in Haiti for the Marines and it’s where the “officer”, Justin Volpe, got the idea from. Also, from what I understand, it is common for Haitian women to be forced to receive hospital treatment for damage to their vaginal canals because the Marines are sexually abusing them with the barrels of their machine guns.

@jones the bad relations between haitian and african-americans comes from BOTH sides. do you know how many times my mother has been cursed and ridiculed for being Haitian? ppl think that b/c you’re haitian you’re supposed to be stupid and poor. there are so many stereotypes that african-americans have about haitians just like haitians have stereotypes about african-americans.

@kash the majority of Haitians do not have aid’s. yes the rate is higher than that of the U.S. but it’s lower than a 6% prevalence rate. one source i read lists it as 5.6%, another at like 3%, that’s MUCH less than the rate for the majority of all of africa. the highest rate is in swaziland at 38.8%. if you want to learn more, look on the CIA world factbook. it’s a good site for quick info

My Heart is Crying for Our People

Thursday, January 31, 2008 /

These are our people. We are all one people and to have the access to help but not help is a discrace. Especially when the reason why America refuses to help Haiti is because of past history. The present moment is devistating and needs help. I pray to God that whoever has access to help can help these malnutritioned dying people. Haitians are so strong to continue living in their condition. They are skillful and talented people that are sadly deprived. Please keep these people in your prayers and those who willingly choose not to help although they can.

Truth is, America will never allow a strong black country to develop, especially not this close…..Nigeria has the most oil in the world…but as long as we fight and kill one another, or our black leaders keep us down …no one cares..oil or not.

AND HERE OVER IN AMERICA PPL CONTANTLY BRAGGIN ABOUT HOW MUCH DIAMONDS THEY GOT

Especially considering where those diamonds come from.

Sad Just Sad,
You shouldn’t say that, because Iraq is going through the same things like every other poor country! Thats counterproductive. Right, the war is unnecessary, but I’ll be damned if someone talks about the innocent Iraqis.

Judah,
I was expecting a comment like that from you. Thats all I can say.

I know and I agree, that celebrities should help these people considering how wealthy they are, especially the billionaires (and I’m not just talking about black celebrities. Hell, you have Bono from U2 doing more for Africa and such than any black celebrity name I can muster up from the top of my head). But complaining about them and weeping in sorrow won’t help. Yes we’re not rich but that doesn’t mean WE can’t HELP either. You’d be surprise. Instead of waiting for the wealthy to help out too, do your part. Otherwise, despair is all you’re contributing. These are my people, and I hate reading things like this :( I’m going to donate and do anything I can to help out.

@178

I’m happy that you were expecting a comment like that from me. The bottom line is that nothing can be solved when our people ask questions that they already know the answers to or don’t want the answers to. “That’s so sad” is not going to do a damn thing and it’s not gonna cut it. Everytime a serious issue occurs it’s 150 comments of “that’s so sad”. It’s pathetic and it’s indicative of how pitiful our people’s mindset is. This is why things like this are happening and will continue to happen. Stupidity is encouraged in our community and it shows when our people are faced with travail and cannot cope with reality. They’ve had fundraisers for Africa, AIDS, and cancer for years, billions of dollars reaped and no results. If you want to put your dollar in, put it in. My thing is, what does money have to do with the systematic economic denial of a country? What has happened to black people, in my opinion, is that our people have been inundated with so many effeminate, caucasian-sponsored, and compromised “leaders” in the last 50 years that they don’t know up from down or where to start when adverse situations present themselves. Blacks get bamboozled with this nonsense about “it’s not a race issue, it’s a class issue”, so now we think that everything can be solved with money or more money. It can’t and it won’t.

Hatians are a special people. So talented, intelligent, artistic and spiritual. THey fought for their independence over 200 years ago and won it. Their country has been left out of trade policies ever since. We are at a tipping point in humanity. There is no reason why anyone should starve with all of the food we have in the U.S. Maybe if we share it, we can reduce our obesity crisis? Just a thought. God Bless Haiti.

I am deeply sadden by this news. It makes me sick to my stomach knowing that my people are out there suffering. Something must be done. It is the end of the world and the Lord is coming soon. During these end days we most really put our attention on what really matters. Helping Haiti has always been urgent. But more than ever in this new year we must do something about it. People seriously if you want to help, then do something about it! I urge you to please spread this news and have other people involved with making a difference. Furthermore, I encourage everyone to take a close look at themselves. Look at your own eating habits, shopping habits and spending habits. Be grateful for what you have and always do your part to give back. God has been so good to us. Let’s count our blessings and give back to those who are in need.
