NEWS: HAITI’S POOREST FORCED TO EAT DIRT

Thursday, January 31, 2008

(Photo: AP)

As food prices soar, impoverished Haitians are resorting to eating cookies made of mud.

Made from dirt, salt and vegetable shortening, the cookies - which are regularly used by pregnant women and children as an antacid and source of calcium - have become a regular meal for Haitians desperate to satisfy hunger.

In Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, 80 percent of the population lives on less than $2 a day. The mud cookies sell for around five cents each, compared to 60 cents for two cups of rice.

What is the U.S. doing to help? Rep. William Thomas [R-CA] introduced the Haitian Hemispheric Opportunity through Partnership Encouragement (HOPE) Act of 2006 as part of the tax-and-trade bill. The bill never became law. Fortunately, that may have been a good thing. The Haiti Progres stated that the bill failed to imposes labor standards instead imposing patronizing, and burdensome conditions on the Haitian people:

Although the undersigned Haitian activists welcomes the US bipartisan desire to assist Haiti with job creation that is evidenced by the passage of the legislation, we continue to denounce the legislation’s neoliberal conditions that enrich only the few while further impoverishing the many; its failure to ensure labor standards, workers’ rights, enforcement and employer accountability.

According to Dan Beeton, International Communications Coordinator for the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) in Washington D.C.:

“Throughout Haiti’s history, the U.S. has usually been a bad neighbor, invading and occupying the country several times, propping up dictators, and at times blocking economic assistance to the country. A number of economically damaging policy prescriptions have originated in Washington as well, including privatization of state industries and the promotion of export processing zones that hamper the development of Haitian industry and generate little revenue…Considering the history of the U.S.’ relationship with Haiti, Americans owe it to the Haitian people to support their right to organize independent trade unions and advocate for policies that will foster real and lasting economic development.”

This is awful. I’m saddened to hear yet another predominantly Black country cannot come together and solve it’s own problems. Even though America imposed alot of their policies on them, I wish we wouldn’t have to rely so much on a white country for humanitarian aid.

That’s sad. These type of things really majes me appriciate what God has blessed me with. I remember when I was little I used to make mud pies and leave them out to dry, but never did I have to eat one to survive.

Actor Danny Glover has been a strong advocate for Haiti for several years…This is terrible and shouldn’t be happening especially in a country that is close to a nation where the majority of its inhabitants are overweight. Toussant L’evoture (spelling?) is probably spinning in his grave.

[...] This really got to me. I can’t help but think about all the food I’ve wasted throughout the years and how many people have died because they didn’t have any food at all. Something like this really forces you to take a step back and get a deeper perspective on life. [...]

The second quote said it best: It’s very difficult to achieve lasting progress when you have a “neighbor” kicking you at every turn. The first independent black nation, Haiti used to be one of the richest islands in the Antilles, Now stripped of it’s natural resources and infiltrated with crooked leaders and criminals propped by the US government that guarantee misery and a rich get richer, poor get poorer model of success. Did you know cruise ships come into Haiti on privatized land? Do you know how many foreigners live in Haiti as a hot long-term vacation spot? Do you know how the crooks who terrorize and kidnap the people get their guns? Look it up. This country has been suffering for it’s boldness, pride and independence ever since 1804. This is a complex situation with no easy solutions but it boils down to much more than “just get it together and pull yourself up by the bootstraps people”.

@ #6 Huh, to put it briefly, the lord is present but I think, that it belongs to us to help them first of all!
But shit, they saw in 2008? and they eat of the bou!……

From # 12……..”@7 s’il te plait, mets un peu l’afrique de côté.

@7 please, put aside the Africa a bit.
@10 it a manner was to speak and especially to underline the seriousness of situation. I am wholly daccord with you on the fact that it belongs to them to take their destiny in hand (policies especially), by hoping that the haitienne diaspora will have to rally to help their fellow-countrymen

OMG. This is so shocking to me. The money that is being WASTED to blow up thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians could be used to buy these people TONS of nutritious food. I am so shocked. I throw away SO MUCH excess food because my children say ‘we don’t like it ma’. NOT ANYMORE. Let’s all appreciate what we have and show this by being less wasteful and thankful to God for providing us even with food to eat.

(its interesting how we mock people who have to use food stamps. We should be grateful to having a gov’t who provide us with food)

I never knew just how terrible the people of Haiti had been done all these years until I read Krik Krak by Edwidge Danticat. I also the a movie called “The Comediennes” which chronicled the rule of Papa Doc Duvalier. These people have survived the worst atrocities by the Ton Ton Macoutes and now they have to deal with this. The UN should step in NOW.

Lawd how sad for them and sad for us as a country to not assist, we can spend millions of dollars on a war that we dont have any business in but we cant help our neighbors in a time of need…Im in florida ..and to think of the instensive rescources they provide to cubans and not give the same to haitians is sad and pathetic but yet it doesnt get enough media attention at all, do you know if your cuban and you touch florida land you get in with goverment aide and assitance…But if your haitian you get turned back, with nothing, We have to get out side of ourselves and actually think what will america be like if we had to resort to that eating dirt cookies as our only option…Seems distant…but it too can very well be a reality…
only the real true inner peace comes in the form of helping others..matieral wealth is only temporary…
found this about charity online…
but the Bible speaks of charity to point us to a specific kind of love. Charity is the love toward others that suffers long with them and is kind (1Corinthians 13:4), that does not behave unseemly, seek to get its own way, or is easily provoked (1Corinthians 13:5); that rejoices not in the iniquity of others (1Corinthians 13:6); that bears, believes, hopes, and endures (1Corinthians 13:7). It is the grace that proves the believer to be mature in his faith and practice. My the Lord give us all more charity.
Charity specifically refers to the love that we have toward other men. Paul stresses that we are to walk “charitably” toward our weaker brothers (Romans 14:13-15). He praised the Thessalonians because “the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth” (2Thessalonians 1:3). In 1Peter 4:8-9, Peter told the believers, “And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. Use hospitality one to another without grudging

It saddens to know that a peolple are suffering, not only economically, but physically, emotionaly, and spiritualy, to an extreme that the Hatians are suffering. What is wrong with the eyes of the world? Are the clouds fogging the vision? It doesn’t matter who helps who-black or white- what matters is that help is offered and used to its greatest capacity.

I still can’t believe that one can be so hungry that you resort to eating dirt cause there’s nothing else… shame man.
It’s actually very ironic, cause here in South Africa - we have one of the highest obesity rate in the world, and also one of the highest rate of people who are starving. The prevalence rate of hunger is highest in one of South Africa’s poorest provinces—nearly one in three households in the Eastern Cape experiences hunger.

Shooo… hectic.

Satan has being rulin this Earth for decadessss!!!
Jesus return is gettin closer every day.
He will return n rescue the people that have been faithful to him throughtout history.

America isnt helping haiti, they are actually keeping that country down.
AMERICA CAN FEED THE WORLD IF THEY WANT TO. everyone knows this!

haiti is the first black country to proclaim its independance. SO Y NOT keep black people down, and make them suffer. black people cannot be “social”,they can only be ” sauvage animals”.and fight their own.

SO LET US MAKE HAITI N AFRICA LIKE THAT. SELL KILL THEIR OWN

a haitian lady told me once told le that “since the pope(antichrist) came to haiti n kissed the Ground, haiti has never been the same.

The population of haiti is quite educated(like an any other country of course),but yet all u see is the kaos, the hungry, the violence every thing that is bad is shown on tv.

Maybe America can feed Haiti, but for how long and is that really gonna help them enough such that they can eventually feed themselves, with wat is going on over there. This is a sad situation, but damn, the crisis in Haiti and worldwide, for black ppl and other races that live below the poverty line just seems to get worse with each passing year. Only God can save them, truthfully, i can’t think of anything else to say, turn it any way u want, it is literally outside of human capacity wit wat resources we have available. I mean according to scientists, in the next ten years or less resources like drinkable water, are gonna start to get scarce and there is no way that is gonna fare well for third world nations.

Haiti has been in turmoil for years. The American government won’t mess with the country bvecause there’s really no way to really help long-term, without getting involved military wise. I agree that we need to give them food, but believe me even if the US sent food over there, the people eating those mud pies probably wouldn’t even get it. It’s just so sad…..;

Yes,u are right with wat you say.
i can’t deny i probably didnt explain myself well.
however, talking about still won’t help them, haiti been goin tru dis for so long now, that it even if they were given the “tools” to manage their country it won’t help.

KENYA is known for being the most stable country in africa, look at it today.
we are living in the last days. scientists can say what they want, they can find so called “reasonZ” for y these things are happenin. BUT its all SAID n the BIBLE.

Satan is ruling this earth,he has people suffering not GOD. Jesus is getting ready for his great return, to show everyone that he is REAL.

@ #8- Oprah doesn’t focus on the entire continent of Africa, mainly on South Africa.

Just because there is a political and humanitarian force working in one area of the world, it doesn’t mean that we can overlook every other poverty stricken nation.

Also, I agree with some of the other posts that have suggested that Haitians living outside of their home country should lead this crusade. It is importatnt to remember your homeland.

Thursday, January 31, 2008 /

What can WE do as a people to stop this travesty? I mean Haiti is not THAT far away from us! Forget the established institutions because if they were effective, something would have been done already! While we (Not all of us now, I am just a little heated after seeing this!) “roll around on twenty-sixes” and hate on each other because of each others possessions, our Brothers & Sisters are eating MUD? We are as strong as our weakest link, don’t think that can’t happen here in amerikkka too. Bush ignored the Katrina catastrophe as well as many who have the power, money and influence to make a change and don’t. That’s blood on OUR hands! Prosperity preachers? Maybe they can do with one less Rolls Royce or tittie-fied mistress and donate some of that money to do some real good! Christians (So called) …..Stop praying for a bigger house and think of those children of God to whom you should be dedicating your LIFE to uplifting! There is NO excuse people. Somehow, someway from a grassroots level, we can pool our talents together in some lucrative fashion to drum up the funds for something good to happen for THEM! Not us. THEM! No corruption or greed. My God. I know like many others here, I have sinned in this life enough, enjoyed (Hate to admit that but I’m being real!) some freaky times and God still had his hand on my life enough to bring me through out of an unconditional love! I owe him BIG TIME! We all do! Angel, let’s make something happen in the name of Concreteloop, I don’t need ANY recognition on this one. You know my talents, I submit them to you for whatever will make a change. If we all can pool our energies together, we can make a big difference and others would follow the trail we bushwack indeed!

America might be the richest country;but we are the ones that control that richness. So, maybe J. Dakar & CL can start an account to donate funds to help…I’m thinking some $$$ from tax returns

Did u guys know that haitions fought in the American revolution. The first person to settle in Chicago and establish a fur trade was Haition. The first black women to be runner up in Miss Universe pagent was haition.Majority of the black doctors in New York are Haitions. When haiti won its independence they traveled around south america to help countries like Venezula and helped them gain their indepence.Believe me Wyclef isn’t the only Haition celeb out their, he can’t do it all by himself. Other Haition celebs out their should help out too…Garcelle Beauvais, DJ WhooKid,Quddus(VJ of Mtv total request live),Tony Yayo,Jimmy JeanLouis,Daphnee Duplaix,Trina McGeeDavis,Jamie Hector(the wire)just to name a few, trust ther is more out there. There’s also like 10 professional atletes who r Haition. Last time I went to Haiti was last November and believe what the media shows u is not what Haiti is all about. Its a beautiful countrie with beautiful people who r very educated. The food is one of the best in the entire west indies and the music well make u dance the night away.So please people know that Haiti is a beautiful culture and we have contributed a lot to and always left our mark in history. We are strong people but we can’t do it on our own. Many countries came in and took what little we had and left us to die but we r stil here.

This is sad news. If someone comes up with something we can do to help Haiti, let me know. Money can’t do much for Haiti. It comes and goes without much value. It seems to me that the country is cursed. This country has had so many leaders who were unable to resolve the issues amongst Haiti. The U.S. has helped Haiti, but outsiders can only help to a certain degree. The country has to be able to help themselves and actually come up with ways to do better for themselves first, act on it, show their neighbors the progress, and have the willingness to continue their accomplishments. It’s a reason why this country has suffered for so long and it’s out of the hands of humans. Only God will make a way for them. SO LET’S ALL PRAY.

I’m Haitian and I’ve been to Haiti and I see how these people live.. But what get me is the when they come here to the United States on boats they get turned away because U.S thinks that it’s not that bad over there but when Cubans come here on boats and there feet touch the damn ground it’s ok. Well it’s not ok. The same reason the the Cubans are fleeing from their country is the same reason that Haitians are fleeing from Haiti.. POVERITY and VIOLENCE. I don’t care if Cuba is a communist country. $Hit they should all be treated the same. We have a president dumb a$$ that is more worried about Iraq then worrying about other countries that really need help.
I do my part to help people in Haiti but we need more people to help this country that is now being forced to eating DIRT!!! DAMN.

I read about this on Perez, and I was actually shocked that there weren’t any racist comments. A lot of people wanted to know where to send donations, and what they could do to help. I was pleasantly surprised and happy.

However, I’d be a little cautious about sending money to any origanization, b/c there are so many corrupt people in power that take and use these donations for themselves. And then the people suffer. I just wish there were other options available.

My intentions are not to offend anyone. I apologize in advance for my ignorance. I’m just giving a comment based on the short research I read from http://www.ask.com. I have little to no clue about what’s actually true about Haiti. I read that in 1804 it was declared the first black independent nation. The country was split into two- Haiti & Dominican Republic. It had leaders that were unsuccesful with resolving the issues of Haiti.

The only highlights discovered, was that the country was rich in resources like cotton and many more.

@tybu are you kiddin me ? the U.S. has helped Haiti? you must know nothing about the U.S.-Haiti relationships b/c the U.S. has helped to keep Haiti down and no matter how much money they donate, they cannot undo what they have already done. it was the U.S. that supported Papa Doc, the worst dictator Haiti has ever seen, all because they were afraid that Papa Doc would form an alliance with Castro and become communist. the U.S. doesn’t care about anybody unless it affects them. let’s be real. if they cared so much for Haiti, they would’ve taken Papa Doc. look at how easy it was for president aristide to be put aside with a “coup d’etat” (if that’s what they want us to believe). do you know how much money Papa Doc stole from Haiti’s bank? and the U.S. ahs the nerve to provide arms for him to carry out his dirty work. but they’ll never put that in the news because they know it’s wrong but it was during a time when everyone was afraid of communism and protecting themselves against the spread of communism was more important then forcing a dictator out of office

and as a general notice… another reason that Haiti is so poor is that when Haiti became indepedent, it was forced to pay $150 million in francs to france as restitution for the fight for independence. aristide tried to get france to pay that money back (and that amt. has probably increased since money back then is worth less than it is now) but france refuses to pay. when a country is a fresh country, with new independence and no real leaders/government or money revenue, it’s ridiculous to expect millions of dollars to be sent to you but france didn’t care. haiti had a bad start fromt he beginning but unfortunately details like this are kept secret from the general public who simply believe that ALL of haiti’s problems are b/c of its people/governement. i’m not taking blame from haiti b/c its leaders have not been helpful BUT when you’re constantly being put down or coming across obstacle, it is hard to move up. i think france needs to do what’s right and return at least part of the money because those haitian slaves had a right to fight for their independence

With all of these rich black people in America why can’t they get together with the leaders in Haiti and try to creat a Bahamas or Jamaica. It is a tropical island you can begin to build resorts and things of that nature. People will begin to work and make money and revenue would come in to the country. I don’t know why we would think that our government would want to help these people. They don’t really want to be bother with the black people who are actually American citizens. They must stand up and do it for themselves. And then maybe once they do it we can begin to try and do it in our communities.

These poor people do not only eat dirt, they eat cement! It eventually kills them and when the autopsy is performed (when it is) that is what is found in their digestive system. Clumps of cement that has formed inside them. I know this because Aug 07 I went there.
Consider this- some of these people aren’t just the poor living in slums.
it is also the ones that have been deported with no family to go back to. Worse- some actually have family that are in the states or other countries that have simply forgotten where they came from and what they left behind!

.46 BashyBoo wyclef alone cant solve the problem- what about all the other haitian artits that are internationally known? i wonder if they set up foundations and organizations like Wyclef.

We really don’t know how good we have it living in America compared to Haiti and 3rd world countries all over the world. While some of us stand with Rev. Jesse Jackson against the unjust killing of a citizen by the police or like someone said complaining about gas prices. If our ancestors didn’t make the boat, we’d be in Africa right now suffering with the rest of our brothers and sisters fighting to stay alive from corrupt governments that want to destroy you (Sudan) etc. Every time u think about buying a pair of icecreams you should put it aside for somebody. OK, maybe I’m just really ignorant, but why do American’s owe Haitians anything? It seems like when we focus on other countries and their issues (think IRAQ), something goes horribly wrong right here at home. People are losing their homes left and right, there are poor and homeless people on US streets. How can we possibly put more focus and energy on other countries, and neglect what is going on right under our noses.

Haiti is predominantly black; so is DETROIT, and a lot of other U.S. cities. The U.S. owes Haiti its support??? What about the support it owes to its own citizens?

The plight in Haiti and a lot of other impoverished countries is heart-wrenching. When compared to the U.S., their quality of life sad and disturbing. However, there are some U.S. citizens who also have a poor quality of life. What about them?

Take care of home first, and the rest will take care of itself.

Ok, to set the record straight, I am of Haitian descent. Not only have I been raised to appreciate my Haitian roots, I am more than proud of them. And unlike the general concensus, I have not forgotten about my relatives in Haiti. The reality of Haiti’s situation is a lot more than what you see/read.
From jump, Haiti has been held back by their origins. Haiti, as previously mentioned, is the only country in WORLD HISTORY to have to pay back reparations to their parent country. Upon gaining independence from France in 1804 after defeating Napoleon’s army (the only country to EVER defeat Napoleon), France was so ashamed/upset of defeat by a Black regime that they set rules for Haiti to pay back 150 million Francs as punishment. Even with this enormous burden, the county still managed to run prosperously until the Duvalier years.
During the Duvalier era, the people of Haiti were subject to a lifestyle comparable to Cubans currently under Castro’s regime. Riches in the country were rationed out, so that no one had more than any other. Though it may seem unfair, keep in mind that no one had much LESS than their fellow country men as well. Life was good for a mass of the country, though democracy was not a given.
After Papa-Doc passed, his son Baby-Doc was seated as the president. He was very young and unexperienced and left most of his judicial decision to his wife, a French woman. With tons of power, an almost indestructible army, and no one to question her decisions, she went on a sort of Bush-esque rampage, claiming anything that could personal benefit her family financially regardless of effects on the general population. This in turn grew a large national deficit, and upon notice by masses and the more developed countries that were donating money to Haiti, both she and her husband fled Haiti for exile in France with all the wealth they had amassed while extorting the country’s people, just as Aristide did not too long ago.
This in turn caused yet another coup, which in turn brought US influence, with troops initially being sent for rescue efforts. But with US enacted trade embargos and US seized territories, it is very hard for a country already held down to bring themselves up with this burden. To say Haiti should lift themselves is to say Cubans should overthrow Castro and force a bureactic government regardless of present burdens. Basically, IT IS DAMN NEAR UNREAL.
For Haiti to be re-born and being to prospere again as a nation, the trade embargos need to be lifted and UN help re-placed. It is immoral and unfair to turn a blind eye to your neighbors, and moreso to neglect outside help without knowing the history. So, please, be informed, make good decisions, and help your neighbor. Visit yelehaiti.org (Wyclef’s organization) if you want to make a donation. It is the Godly thing to do, regardless of amount.

CLEARMINDED

Thursday, January 31, 2008 /

This is heartbreaking. It seems like an overwhelming problem because you don’t know who to trust to actually get help to the people. Can you trust the Haitian government? History says no. Can you trust the U.S. government? Doesn’t look like it (look at Katrina). Maybe the U.N. needs to step in. But the U.N. has its own problems with corruption. And how long do you stay?

I have two Haitian friends that I love dearly and that have been in the US for at least 15 years now, and even they don’t really know what to do or who to trust to remedy this situation. Haitian governmental corruption is legendary.

In my dreams, black people all over the world would come out of violence, ignorance and poverty and learn how to *rule themselves*. I just don’t know if that’s a fantasy or not. Anyway, I am willing to donate to any organization that is trustworthy and effective in Haiti.

I just started working in the bakery at a local grocery store and it saddens me how much food I have to throw out every night…and no one, not even the employees, can eat it! They just got where they will give a small (and I mean VERY SMALL) bit of it to local churches, but if you knew how much bread, meat, and vegetables the bakery, deli, and meat departments throw out before it’s even stale or bad, it would make you sick! I have been working here for two weeks now and I still haven’t gotten used to it. It’s also against the law for anyone to go in the dumpster and get it! Wow–this is one of the saddest stories I have ever heard. I agree w’y'all: Jesus is coming soon. He has shown-and continues to show me His mercy despite my sins so I gotta help these people. I have never written a response, though I read the ‘loop’ nearly everyday. I agree with all of you-WE need to step in-step up and help. But how? And in doing so, we need to convince Haitians and Jamaicans and Africans–that we are ALL people of color who have been oppressed one way or another. We need to come together and stay together! I have encountered Haitians and other people of color in my life who have a chip on their shoulders: like they are better than African-Americans. Like we had a say in where our slave ships landed! Y’all get my point–I don’t wanna go off on a tangent here: but let’s find a way to uplift each other; not for the moment but over the long-term…let’s help end hunger and poverty amongst our own and then branch out and assist the rest of society. If anyone knows of any REAL solutions or charitable efforts that we can trust to help FEED these people, send me an email at barestofsouls1@aol.com so I can sign up.

This is UNBELIEVABLE! I am going to make my kids read this for a clear understanding of what’s important in the world, because the latest Jordan’s is not important.

First off, you cannot just decide to go into a country and build resorts to create jobs or decide to donate money on the internet and expect it to aide the people in need. Just like we have a SO-CALLED government and leaders whom make decisions on what we deserve and are allowed, they have the same.

Although HAITI is an independent state, they have Diplomatic relations with the United States and are a Member of United Nations and not all parts of HAITI is like this. I know a lot of educated Haitians that came to the U.S. educated. All Countries , Independents, etc.. have a wealthy population and a poor population including the U.S. When we see homeless people, poor people, children begging for food - Do we help? After you cook dinner - do you take a plate to the elderly woman who lives next door (or wherever)? Do we stop and take a minute out of our luxurious day (yes luxurious, because computers and the internet is a luxury not a necessity for survival) to aide these people that are right in front of our faces? Very few of us do.

I don’t know how we should go about helping them, because I don’t know about the inter workings of their country. What I do know is I am going to give my money to someone who does know - http://www.yele.org.

For all whom is interested, there is a Donate Now link on the home page.

People start fixing YOURSELF and MAYBE we can fix the world. I will add Haiti to my list of prayers.

This is sad. Very sad. I remember reading multi page article explaining that there are 2 societies in Haiti. The ligh skinned and the dark skinned. I was so shocked that that people of the same race who are the majority in their country and have been discrimated against the world over would see each other for the most part like different races. The newspaper went on to explain and quote that the light skinned society looked down on the dark skinned and were not interested in helping them and therefore the scorned people of Haiti had to struggle all the more and were much poorer, obviously. It would be honourable for the richer people in any society to stop basing their or anyone’s importance on skin shade and just help our fellow human.

It hasn’t been that long ago since Black people have been freed from segregation, and if we think about it, from slavery too so it makes me angry when someone points out that other races are managing to get ahead quickly so why not the Black man. Since Blacks have always been treated with the least amount of respect or just none at all more than any other race it should be understandable why it hasn’t been so easy. The rich White nations shouldn’t have to be pleaded with to give a helping hand to nations that gave free labour and lost their lives so that the White man could get hundeds of years of a head start of building their bank accounts and getting a good education. Their descendents have profited from Blacks(especially) and from Native Indians yet the White man has the nerve to look back and laugh and ridicule as though they didn’t really set a nation back hundreds of years and they expect or pretend that progress can be made easily and quickly.

White nations should, at the very least, partially correct the wrong of their ancestors that stole emotionally and physically from Blacks and Native Indians.

You know the conditions in Haiti, and the Katrina response points out that African Americans need the ability to help people of color even if others choose not to. With the wealth that we have in this country we can have a world class emergency response capability unequaled in history for black people. When matured it could even respond to humanitarian aide, and emergencies on the African continent, like the unrest in Kenya.

I have a plan for such an emergency response entity. Give me a note if you want to know about it.

Also for the religious people (or whomever), you can donate money at church that has international ministries or outreach programs. If your church doesn’t then find a church that does. Many churches have online giving capabilities.

I wasn’t even thinking about this in my initial post and we do have international outreach at my church. I pray that GOD disciplines me to consistently give to these programs so things such as this is at a minimum. We all know how many of us pass by the collection plate at church (myself included). Hopefully the church is righteous and your good deed will not go unnoticed (to MAN anyway).

US OF IGNORANCE, see what I mean, I was talkin about the same shit b4, instead of the US spending billions on this useless war they should be helping people in need, theres absolutely no reason not to, the only war we are supposed to be fightin is poverty. Nobody deserves a life like that.. I’m a Muslim so its an obligation if you have money you have to give it to the poor regardless, and my fam does every year, but of course its far from enough. People should really give out, but I think more pressure should be put on the government who really have the money to do something like this, we can’t make enough of a difference. This is sad and I feel bcuz there are so many Haitians over here in America who are doing really well its time for them to stand up and open there wallets and pocket books. They need to be the first to start giving back to there community. If they dont take a stand and start doing something then no one will pay any attention.

Africa is helped by millions of African Americans every year who choose to donate back into the homeland which we originated. We believe that its our duty and only right to take care of our ancestors and allow them many of the same opportunities that we have been afforded by the resorces through this country.

Yall talk about how we waste food everyday, but we waste money everyday too, money that can go to help people that are starving. People are so selfish! Instead of waistin money on lambroghinis and ferraris(i can’t afford it so i don’t need to know how to spell it) the wealthy people of America need to try and help feed the hungry around the world. I get sick of rappers rappin about what they got and not giving to the needy, which is way more important.

This is really fucked up. I agree with whoever used the war in Iraq as an example. The shit loads of money is being used to support this shitty war could be used to support those who are desperately in need. Knowing that the poor people of Haiti has to eat fucking DIRT for Christ sake, is just really sickening. No one and I mean NO ONE should be in that type of position. They just don’t deserve this. With all of the money that these wealthy folks have, they should REALLY be reaching out to those who are truly in need.

I’am truly saddened in what is going on in Haiti, but I think that charity starts at home.I use to live in D.C.back in the early nineties, and on any given night you could see hundreds of black people sleeping on top of exhaust platforms,of government buildings, less than a mile from the WHITE HOUSE,trying to stay warm because they had no where to go.If you look at what has happened to our people in New Orleans and how hard working poor people have had their families broken up,lied to by insurance companies who took their money and left them to suffer. And here we are in 2008 and more than half of one million black families have lost or are about to lose their homes by foreclosure. Most black folk here in America are 2-3 paydays away from eating dirt themselves. The people of Haiti were enjoying freedom and independence while our ancestors were still feeling the sting of a whip.In fact their independence expanded the American Slave Trade, the comment @91 was on point, Toussaint L’Ouverture defeated Napoleon, but not before Napoleon sold France’s share of America to America, what we know as the Louisiana Purchase.Haiti’s military was strong, strong enough to run the most powerful man of that time back to Europe, and if you talk to “some Haitians” they will look at us black folk like we are something less than human.I’ve had some them tell me that our people were afraid to fight for our freedom and that we have no culture.Go to the Little Haiti section of Miami (but don’t go alone)and try to interact on a personal level, again with “some of the Haitians”and they will be quick to call you a Black Yankee,if you are not spending money in their shops/stans they have no holla. We are better served in working to keep our own heads afloat before we make an attempt to help others, but if your pockets are that deep,by all means do all that you can.But any deposable funds you have should go to a local homeless shelter/foodbank or like MO said Habitat for Humanities.I have no hate for the Haitians,I just feel that there are a million and one black folk that you can help right here.

People please do your research before posting garbage like this. First off I’m Haitian, the economy in my country is bad, but not bad enough were people are forced to eat “mud pies” give me a break. Their’s countries far worst off than Haiti and they would never even think of printing this mess about. Our problem is besides wyclef Jean, we don’t have a strong political leader to be our voices so we can be heard and fight to keep things like this from being said about Haiti my beautiful homeland. let’s not forget On January 1, 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines declared the colony’s independence as the world’s first black republic. so a little if not a whole lot of respect is due to my homeland. So please don’t believe nor support articles like this. For proof and pictures on how much of a B.S. this article is please visit Wyclefjean.com or Yele.org.

As a child of Haiti, I read this earlier this week and was sadden and renewed my vow put forth my personal efforts to use my talents and career to help Haiti. Haiti doesn’t need god to have mercy on them, the US or its citizen’s pity. It needs justice and it needs it children of the diaspora not to forget where they came from. Many rich Haitians in Haiti and living in America have rastaveks, basically children slaves given to them or found on the street, working for them. We need new people with education to come and over turn the system of poverty and corruption. Haiti’s politicians including Preval, help the South American run drugs in America. America, the new system of globalization, the Dominican republic, France and Canada have all took its turn creating lasting upheaval. We need to hold these countries accountable, stop the paternalism and create a joint effort aide.

May God Bless those in Haiti.

Wow we don’t need Oprah or any of these celebrities to help out the Haitians. We can hlp by donating if every Black American donated money, I bet you that our donations would reach higher than an a oprah donation. Lets not rely on these celebs and rely on what we can do as black folks to help out. We stood up and join Jena 6 and donated money to that in a heartbeat and we can do the same to Haiti. My friend is in the black student union and they are trying to prepare for a winter ball and I think they should cancel it because they aren’t prepared. Instead I’ll give them ideas of preparing a fund for the Haitians we should all do something you guys this sickening and heart wrenching come on these people are eating sand cookies :(

You don’t even respect Oprah and always talking about what she should be doing get the people you will killl for if someone says something you don’t agree with about them to do something. The next time you buy some some otf their name brand stuff you will die for think about sending the money to Haiti yourself.

JUDAH

Thursday, January 31, 2008 /

In my opinion, one thing that we as black people need to do is establish a sense of reality. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere . That’s a fact, not an opinion, not rhetoric, and not propaganda. Alot of Americanized Haitian brothers and sisters feel the need to “represent” for their country when Haiti is put in a bad light and they only end up looking overly proud and delusional. I see the same delusional spirit in American blacks, West Indian blacks, and Hispanics that want to “hope” that “one day” we’ll have power and prestige in America. At the end of the day, a segment of the people probably are eating mud pies and dirt cookies in Haiti. You can act like they’re not, you can be embarassed that they are, you can regurgitate all the Haitian celebrities and historical achievements that you can muster. It doesn’t mean a damn thing. The Haitians have an even deeper and more powerful history than what anyone has alluded to, but it has little bearing on what is going on now if our people are not willing to acknowledge it.

I followed #155’s advice and went to yele.org and all I saw was reinforcement of the FACT that Haiti is destitute. Am I supposed to believe that those brothers and sisters are on the upswing because they’re wearing Catholic school uniforms? That’s indicative of their indoctrination into paganism. No disrespect to anyone else; you can send $1 or $1,000,000, it either won’t get there or it won’t have an effect because if the people in power were truly concerned about them, the people of Haiti wouldn’t be in the state that they’re in. The biggest scams on the planet earth are these “fundraisers” for the poverty-stricken. If a man robs you of everything that you are and have and then comes back 50 years later to give you crumbs, does that make him magnanimous? If we’re thankful for those crumbs, what does that make us? Then the man that robs you asks you to send him money so that he can possibly donate a portion of it back to you. Black people really have to analyze and understand the level in which we are subliminally mocked before we can make any real change. Furthermore, American blacks only control 50cents for every $100 U.S. so it makes not sense to look down on the Haitians when, pound for pound, the American blacks are probably poorer that them.

I’m not going to go into the Toussaint L’ouverture stuff because I personally believe that he was in cahoots with the white man, but that’s a whole other story. As the caucasian’s own self-condemnatory history books will tell you, they repeatedly invaded Haiti, they’ve cut down all the trees which is why the island floods and drowns hundreds or Haitians and Dominicans whenever there’s a pronounced rainstorm, and there are U.S. military bases already all over the island. America is fully aware of the economic condition of the Haitians. They’re down there to act as if they’re assisting the people medically when in fact, they are the ones giving the Haitians the AIDS virus. It’s caucasian policy to act concerned about the other races when the actual intent is to slowly; methodically, destroy the history, culture, and eventually the existence of said race. Nothing can be too obvious. The Marines have clubs on the island where they only allow light-skinned Haitian prostitutes in. The torture that Abner Louima was forced to endure in which an NYPD “officer” sodomized him in a police bathroom with a broken broomstick (perforating his colon) is policy in Haiti for the Marines and it’s where the “officer”, Justin Volpe, got the idea from. Also, from what I understand, it is common for Haitian women to be forced to receive hospital treatment for damage to their vaginal canals because the Marines are sexually abusing them with the barrels of their machine guns.

@kash the majority of Haitians do not have aid’s. yes the rate is higher than that of the U.S. but it’s lower than a 6% prevalence rate. one source i read lists it as 5.6%, another at like 3%, that’s MUCH less than the rate for the majority of all of africa. the highest rate is in swaziland at 38.8%. if you want to learn more, look on the CIA world factbook. it’s a good site for quick info

The present moment is devistating and needs help. I pray to God that whoever has access to help can help these malnutritioned dying people. Haitians are so strong to continue living in their condition. They are skillful and talented people that are sadly deprived. I was expecting a comment like that from you. Thats all I can say.

I know and I agree, that celebrities should help these people considering how wealthy they are, especially the billionaires (and I’m not just talking about black celebrities. Hell, you have Bono from U2 doing more for Africa and such than any black celebrity name I can muster up from the top of my head). But complaining about them and weeping in sorrow won’t help. Yes we’re not rich but that doesn’t mean WE can’t HELP either. You’d be surprise. Instead of waiting for the wealthy to help out too, do your part. Otherwise, despair is all you’re contributing. @178

I’m happy that you were expecting a comment like that from me. The bottom line is that nothing can be solved when our people ask questions that they already know the answers to or don’t want the answers to. “That’s so sad” is not going to do a damn thing and it’s not gonna cut it. Everytime a serious issue occurs it’s 150 comments of “that’s so sad”. It’s pathetic and it’s indicative of how pitiful our people’s mindset is. This is why things like this are happening and will continue to happen. Stupidity is encouraged in our community and it shows when our people are faced with travail and cannot cope with reality. They’ve had fundraisers for Africa, AIDS, and cancer for years, billions of dollars reaped and no results. If you want to put your dollar in, put it in. My thing is, what does money have to do with the systematic economic denial of a country? What has happened to black people, in my opinion, is that our people have been inundated with so many effeminate, caucasian-sponsored, and compromised “leaders” in the last 50 years that they don’t know up from down or where to start when adverse situations present themselves. Blacks get bamboozled with this nonsense about “it’s not a race issue, it’s a class issue”, so now we think that everything can be solved with money or more money. It can’t and it won’t.

Wow a lot of what you said was powerful and unfortunately, painfully true. I’m just curious in regards to your last paragraph about Haitian women, what are your sources? I can’t believe that this type of abuse is going on and aboslutely no one has reported it.

im 100% haitian…almost everyone i know is hatitan…so this def. hits home.
i just want everyone to know how hardworking and educated hatians are if they are just given the chance.literally evryone i know who has emigrated here from haiti has worked their ASSESSS off to go to college and become succesful, not only haitians but immigrants in general.my father is a psychiatrist and my mother is a nurse. The majority of black doctors in America are Haitian, so we are definitely talking about an educated people.

i wish they could just get the help they need because they def. deserve it

Hatians are a special people. So talented, intelligent, artistic and spiritual. THey fought for their independence over 200 years ago and won it. Their country has been left out of trade policies ever since. We are at a tipping point in humanity. There is no reason why anyone should starve with all of the food we have in the U.S. Maybe if we share it, we can reduce our obesity crisis? Just a thought. God Bless Haiti.

I am deeply sadden by this news. It makes me sick to my stomach knowing that my people are out there suffering. Something must be done. It is the end of the world and the Lord is coming soon. During these end days we most really put our attention on what really matters. Helping Haiti has always been urgent. But more than ever in this new year we must do something about it. People seriously if you want to help, then do something about it! I urge you to please spread this news and have other people involved with making a difference. Furthermore, I encourage everyone to take a close look at themselves. Look at your own eating habits, shopping habits and spending habits. Be grateful for what you have and always do your part to give back. God has been so good to us. Let’s count our blessings and give back to those who are in need.

I dont believe in the gov. in haiti. the government in haiti is taking all the money and instead of spending the money on the country of haiti they spend the money on themself. I think it is sad to have them kids eating mud cookies. im in the eighth grade and i do not believe in starving kids. their government in haiti is rediculus

First that Ive heard of this…
all I can do is quote the words of the late Tupac Shakur…”they got money for wars, but cant feed the poor”…this is so so sad, it really is. Surely something can be done…no one should have to endure eating dirt/mud. Wow……….

This is terrible. I almost wonder how they taste?

These people need our help. Plenty of Americans wasting their money on ring tones, cigarettes food that they dont eat.

Change is necessary.

Vote Obama

This kind of stuff happen constantly. We can all do something but some are to lazy to do anything about it. We should have found raisers and then donate the money to an orphanage or even a family!!!!!!!!!!!
