POLITICAL ROUND UP: BET FOUNDER APOLOGIZES / OBAMA SPLITS BLACK CAUCUS
Thursday, January 17, 2008
Bob Johnson, founder and former CEO of BET apologized Thursday to Sen. Barack Obama for what appeared to be veiled comments this week regarding the Democratic presidential hopeful’s acknowledged drug use as a teenager.
Johnson, a high-profile supporter of Sen. Hillary Clinton, said he sent Obama a letter and also was reaching out by phone.
Obama spokesman Bill Burton responded Thursday afternoon, saying, “Obama accepts the apology. We’re going to leave it at that.”
Johnson drew criticism following remarks he made Sunday at a Clinton campaign stop in Columbia, South Carolina.
Earlier this week, Clinton and Obama both called for an end to the bitter, racially charged exchanges that have taken place between their campaigns in recent days.
OBAMA SPLITS BLACK CAUCUS

Many black lawmakers on Capitol Hill are not supporting Barack Obama, who may become the first black ever to represent a major party as the nominee for president. And that’s creating tensions within the Congressional Black Caucus.
More than a third of the black members of Congress are backing Hillary Rodham Clinton or John Edwards in the presidential primary, a stance that puts them at odds with many of their African-American constituents, who, recent polls show, are beginning to shift to Obama’s camp.
The Clinton supporters — among them, civil rights pioneer Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.) — have said their endorsements didn’t hinge on race. Instead, they cited long-standing relationships with the Clintons, a respect for Hillary Clinton’s experience in national politics and, for some, geographical alliances with her in New York.
But now that Obama has won the Iowa caucuses and appears poised to do well in other early-primary states, some black lawmakers are pointing to the Clinton backers and calling them political opportunists who did not believe in the electability of a black candidate. Read the article in its entirety.

I’m mad that after Johnson made that statement, he tried to say he wasn’t talking about the drug use. I mean if u said it, stick to it, don’t try to back out of it because people didn’t like what you said.

The statement that Bob Johnson made about Barack Obama had the opposite effect of what Hillary and himself had in mind, instead of gaining Hillary more support from the black community she lost support. Now, he is trying to reverse the damage by making an apology to Barack. The apology could be heartfelt maybe it’s not, but I still say BARACK OBAMA PRESIDENT 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As blacks we should never conflate the ideas of supporting Hilary Clinton and betrayal to black people. You have a right- AND DUTY to you and your people- to vote for the candidate that u think will best represent u. With that said… i’m conflicted between Obama and Hilary. But dont for a second think that someone a vote for Obama necessarily would necessarily mean ur voting for the best leader of black america. Likewise… no black should think that somehow we owe it to the Clinton’s for their work in the past (although that is reassuring to me because they have a proven track record). Nor should we feel compelled to suppor Obama because he is black and Clinton is not.
PEOPLE THE MEDIA -AND AMERICA…including black america- HAS BEEN SAYING WHO WE SHOULD VOTE FOR OR WHO THEY ‘KNOW’ WE’LL VOTE FOR LIKE WE’RE SOME EASILY INFLUENCED DONKEYS WITH A CARROT DANGLING INFRONT OF OUR HEADS GUIDING US TO THIS FALLACIOUS PREDESTINED CANDIDATE.
I’m just saying regardless of Bob Johnston, the media, the congresional black congress, black america, white america OR WHOMEVER says… WE ARE FREE… TO USE ARE MINDS…AND VOTE FOR WHO WE WANT, BOTH AS INDIVIDUALS AND A PEOPLE.
JUST DO U!

I’m not surprised at all about the split in the Black Caucus. Many of those people have a feel an allegiance to the Clintons from way back - and some of them may simply feel that Hillary is a better candidate. All Black people are not backing Barack - and all white women are not backing Hillary.
Folk have to recognize - politics is about money and power - it’s a selfish game.

Throw that truth on them Young Zo. That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to tell my friends. They don’t understand why I haven’t gotten on the Obama band wagon. Do I like the man? yes. Do I think he’s charismatic? yes. But will I vote for him? Not sure.
Bottom line, being black doesn’t make him the best candidate. And not to repeat you, but working as a journalist, I’ll be the first to tell you 100% of your news is slanted. I’ve said it on here and I’ll say it again…NEVER RELY ON ONE SOURCE…for your news.
And don’t forget, we have a long way to go before election time. Remember the last one?Candidates ruined their chances at the presidency over certain statements that were wrong or perceived to be wrong.. and by switching back and forth on issues. Look how Howard Dean was treated and John Kerry. So basically, pay attention and don’t set your mind on one candidate. Some much can happen between now and election day. Just make sure you’re informed.

OBAMA ”08, i’m sick of people hating on this man. I whole heartedly support Barack Obama, the only reason so many black people are supporting Hillary Clinton is because of Bill. Simply put just because you are married to someone doesn’t mean your political views are anything alike, simply put Hill dosen’t have the same swag as Bill. And I don’t see her as a good fit for the president of America.Barack made it from the bottom to the top were he ought to be. He is an intelligent, well heeled, BLACK politican that’s not on that Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton not a shot in hell presidency bid. He actually is a viable candidate and I’m going to support.

I don’t have a problem with these black lawmakers supporting Hillary. My problem lies with their reasons for supporting her. Just because you have a long-standing relationship with the Clintons doesn’t mean that Hillary will be a good president. What are their motives? Do they think if Hillary wins she’s going to give them a cabinet position?
And why does Hillary keep saying she has 35 years of experience. 35 years ago she was in law school and 18 of those 35 years where spent as first lady (governor & president). Are people really so stupid that they believe everything this woman says?

It’s really great to see so many blacks aka African Americans supporting Obama. However, I will be realistic with this matter. It doesn’t matter how much Oprah backs him and the black community supports him, the truth of the matter is that the majority is not black. And, with elections the majority rules. That’s the reality.

First of all, you all have got to check out the cartoon that I just finished of this clown Bob Johnson. Click on my name to get to my site then go to the “Scurv Art Gallery” page.
Now, what good is an apology saying what he said on purpose. It was a calculated smear indeed! To keep it short, it seems to me like some type of political/corporate favor that he owes former President Clinton so he is hooking up Hillary with the honors. I have no problem with Bob not endorsing Barack. If he feels Hillary is the best then it is his right to endorse her. But to smear Barack publicly as a man of such accomplishments? He obviously has endured many smears and obstacles himself as a Black man in the corporate world. So why would you who knows the same assaults and pain on your character inflict the same on someone else who is coming up in the ranks in his career as a politician? An apology doesn’t clean it all up in my book! That’s why I drew the picture of him on my site!
I want to hear from you all!

I am not surprised about the backing of Black lawmakers, This is all a game. Most of those lawmakers are probably in office because of clinton backing them, so when you have lobbyist, special interest, this is how they vote. They tend to move with the money, that’s why they along with the republician congress, is considered a do nothing congress. They are only there to line the pockets of their family and friends. They don’t want real change.

We as a people have come too far to be the very reason why we let an opportunity go by like what we have here with Barack. You see, the world would HAVE to see beyond the stereotypes put forth by the BET network and realize that we are Women & Men of substance when the see the fine example of a man that is Barack Obama. This is destiny and we must act now as though our lives depended on it because in a sense, it does! Who would have thought that in 2008 we could possibly have a Black president who is QUALIFIED to bring the unique combination of characteristics to the White (White?) House!

Divide and conquer. I know that’s what alot of Obama supporters and Republican voters are thinking at this very moment. But to be honest…I feel better knowing that the eggs are split between two baskets rather than following one fat hen. So what if the CBC is split. It’s a good thing because that means they aren’t being held by one particular politicians hand or pocketbook. I don’t think this will matter much since the CBC is practically split between both major candidates. Each member probably won’t change their enndorsements even at this early stage of the game but I’m baffled by Rangel’s comment of the Clinton’s practically being family (WTH?). Unless one of the candidates royaly fucks up or a major scandal erupts, I don’t see this changing anything.

I support Barack Obama because of these very facts listed below: (COULD CARE LESS ABOUT HIS SKIN COLOR, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.)
1. Senator Obama had the judgment to be against the Iraq War from the very beginning, even when it was very popular to support it. That position could have cost him his Senate bid, but he stuck with it. He takes positions based on principles, not poll tested positions. He has the impeccable judgment to keep us safe. That’s why along with getting us out of Iraq, his first priority is going to be to refocus our attention on Afghanistan and capturing Bin Laden, which now should have been done years ago.
2. Senator Obama has proposed the most comprehensive, detailed, and economically responsible stimulus package to help the American People and this economy. It’s the exact opposite of Bush’s proposal. It’s an investment of $120 billion that provides immediate relief by putting money in the hands of workers and seniors, stems the rising tide of the foreclosure crisis, and covers state budget shortfalls.
3. When he finished school, he could have easily taken a job on Wall Street and become a millionaire. Instead, he took a $12,000 a year job to be a community organizer, helping people who’d lost their jobs in the poor neighborhoods of Chicago. He has great judgment and great experience helping real Americans.
4. It has been proven in national poll after national poll, most recently by USA Today and Gallup, that Senator Obama is the most electable Democrat in the race today. He’s the only Democrat beating all 5 Republicans, and unlike Hillary and as Obama’s win in the Iowa Caucuses clearly showed, he strongly attracts Independents and Republicans. This has been proven nationwide. We want to support a winner and he’s clearly our best shot. 50% of Americans have said that under no circumstances would they ever vote for Hillary.
5. After watching Bush shred the constitution for the last 7 years, it’ll be wonderful to have someone with the experience of being a constitutional law professor as President. The chief responsibility of the President of the United States is to enforce the law - no candidate knows the law better than Obama.
6. We can make world history by making Senator Obama the Democratic nominee for President of the United States, as Iowa made world history by making him the winner of the first-in-the-nation caucuses . . .
“An Obama win in Iowa will be the biggest political story coming from America in a generation, in decades, that will be covered on the front pages of every major newspaper in the world on January 4th”.
-Chris Matthews (Hardball-MSNBC: 12.26.07)
7. After 7 years of Bush, we need a President with brains. Senator Obama is the ‘anti-Bush’. He was president of the Harvard Law Review, the oldest and most prestigious pupil operated law review in the U.S. To be it’s president, you have to be absolutely brilliant, and Senator Obama is brilliant.
8. After 7 years of being lied to by the President and other politicians, we deserve a President who not only tells the truth, but has an outstanding reputation for lifelong honesty, as does Senator Obama. We deserve an honest President.
9. It was Senator Obama who led the successful landmark effort in the United States Senate to pass the most comprehensive ethics and lobbying reform bill since Watergate. That bill strictly banned gifts and meals from lobbyists, and the use of corporate jets. He has the experience, both as an Illinois State Senator and as a United States Senator, of working throughout his entire political career for transparency and honesty in government.
10. There isn’t another candidate in this race, Democrat or Republican, that offers
Americans any more of an opportunity for real change and real hope and for a real breath of fresh air than Barack Obama. This country hasn’t seen a leader come along like this since John Kennedy and Robert Kennedy, and we may not see another leader like this again in our lifetime. We should seize this momentous and historic opportunity.
Now as far as that Uncle Tom, Bob Johnson, former CEO of “Black Enslavement Television” is considered, he’s a fool, simply put. Apology or not, he’s already did damage to his reputation.
The change this country needs starts with you, the grassroots, as Obama’s campaign is all about. Get involved! OBAMA in 2008.
“YES WE CAN!”

Bob Johnson could never in a million years make me change my mind on voting for whom ever I please. He acts as though he’s speaking on behalf of all Black America. Look at how he presided over BET. There was rarely anything worth watching on that station that I viewed as educational, when people started speaking about that ,he sold it.
Now he wants to tell people how to vote, by trying to blackball Obama. The Clintons have many a skeletons in their closet. That Bob Johnson is an idiot. He’s one of those old Americans that believe that we have to always depend on whites. Obama is showing all those young black boys and men that it is possible in America to run for the office of president and possibly win. I was for Hillary to, but I feel at times they take us for granted, It’s time for something different.

Thanks again to everyone about my artwork. You know, it’s the same feeling when you have a child that is loved by everyone, it warms your heart over tenfold. I commited to using my talent in a way that would provoke thought and encourage strong reaction whether one may agree or not.
I have to thank Angel again for helping me to get my work out to all of my wonderful people here on Concreteloop. I can’t get enough of this site! There have been times when I couldn’t go back to bed in the middle of the night after a trip to the restroom without checking to see what was happening! LOL!
It is so hard in an industry that is dominated by old crusty individuals that refuse to acknowledge & utilize your abilities because of the color of your skin or your ideology.
A man like Barack Obama infuses me with an enthusiasm to excel in my chosen passion now matter what the world thinks. And he helps me to know that no matter what, we are to toil at perfecting ourselves even when we have passed through a period that may not be too pristine! We ALL have something in our past that we know was a misjudgement. Barack is the bigger man for even being real enough to acknowledge these things that many of his detractors would never admit.
Can we finally join hands in unison as a people once and for all to bring in a NEW period in our history? I’m all for it and would definitely shed tears of joy when it does happen!
Love you all!

I like Barack, I really do. I think he would indeed make a great President. And Ive always been torn b/w him and Hillary Clinton, but leaning towards Clinton. Then I realized something.
A LOT of people dont like Hillary. They think she’s cold. A polarizing figure. She is a brilliant woman, a punctual woman, a woman of MANY accomplishments. She could even be a great president. But many Americans just dont flat-out like her b/c: She’s a democrat, she’s Bill’s wife, she may come off as untrustworthy, and she can seem a bit dehumanized.
In fact, more people like OBAMA more than Hillary. I realized that if Hillary was ever to receive the Democratic nomination, she could very well LOSE the presidency simply b/c most of Americans such as Independents, Republicans, and some Democrats dont like her. But if she had OBAMA as her running mate VP, THAT would give her the boost she needed to win b/c of Obama’s greater popularity, although Hillary does have numerous supporters.
However, it wouldnt be the same if OBAMA won the Dems nomination. If he had Hillary as his running mate VP, he would probably lose b/c of her. She would hurt his public stance.
With that theory we can assume that HIllary really would be too divisive as President. And it would not b/c of her laws and beliefs which are Just and SOUND and proper for our nation, but b/c people just dont LIKE HER. And we as Americans need a president who can UNITE the country. An HONEST President.
So i dont know. I would like Hillary to win b/c she’s strong enough to do this. But too many people just dont like her enough. Obama is great, and as a President he might unite instead of divide a very already-divisive Congress that cant cant seem to get their shit together these days.
But then I think about the Bradley effect. I mean, hey, WHITE PEOPLE LIE! They say they’ll vote for Obama but might end up voting for Huckabee or MCcain instead. SO whats up with that? We dont know how they really feel about having the First Black President. And there’s so much racism in this country that one of those redneck fools might even try to KILL Obama, the closest thing to JFK and ML we have today. I dont want Obama to take the fall for not being able to fully clean up Bush’s mess of 8 yrs.
So who do you go for? Barack, or Hillary? And if Barack is nominated with Hillary as his running mate, do you think they could win?
Hey, J. Dakar, could you a posting of all the current candidates of both Reps and Dems parties and a comparison of their stances so that EVERYONE here can see the differences b/w them. Would appreciate it.

i’m definately riding for obama. for the past 33 years of my life i’ve been wishing that one day my generation will be blessed with our own version of MLK or malcolm X. someone that inspire a natino of color and to be proud of being black. in these darkest hours, i truely felt that our people were completely lost, because we had these so-called “leaders” failing us, our so-called role models failing us more, and in every direction the media always kept finding a way to make us out as fools.
barack obama came out of the blue as someone we should model by. an highly intelligent, high self-esteemed, successful, and determined leader who paved his own road without any handouts by others and never selling out. his family even put the huxtables to shame. he’s someone that rose to greatness in such a quick of a time, but always stayed grounded. me, personally, his short time at washington is more of a blessing than a lack of experience, because it shows that he’s not currupted by the political system, he’s too brand new to be currupted!
it’s highly understandible as to why black people are split on this issue, because it’s a classic generational gap type of thing. most of the old school civil rights era people are going to ride with their fellow baby boomer hillary, because they still have that mentality that in order to achieve success for us is thru the help of the white man (or woman in this case) to pull them thru. even hillary herself implied that with that controversial statement that it took LBJ to pass the (flawed) civil rights bill. also, our so-called black “leaders” fear obama, because if obama becomes president, then the entire civil rights era of leaders are dead! the changing of the guard have been set. the transition of fighting against racism to fighting against CLASSISM will be complete.
obama isn’t from that era, he’s from the generation X era. the same era that many people in the 80’s and early 90’s claim will amount to nothing. yet we’re the ones that got next to lead this country and prove them wrong.
hillary is their last chance of a era that gone old and passed away

I think it is a damn shame that some people are jumping to vote for Obama based on the simple fact “he’s black like us”… that does NOT mean he is the best choice to represent AMERICA. This is bigger than one race.. this is about an entire country… think about BUSH having the power to lead us into a BS war… If we make a decision on RACE/ETHNICITY we are setting ourselves up for a big failure… I am sure there are much better black choices than Obama and far better women choices than Hillary… As an AMERICAN I have no faith in the people in my country to make the BEST decision.. we are still so focused on black and white and all that BS.

What he said is NOT a betrayal. It does NOT make him a sell-out. How the hell are some of you mad at this statement when this man has been denigrating your entire race (versus one black person this time) for ages? Well, some black people still eat up the BET. Yes, Debra Lee has cranked the coonery up from an 8 to a 10, but still. His statements were definitely in poor taste and reflect what I see in all democrats these days which is completely destructive to the entire party. Moderates and independents decide the election just like they decide every election. It’s not women, not black people, not Latinos or anyone else. There are a lot more of them around these days and most of them vote. If it were 2000 and I was looking at this circus, I would not vote for a democrat. The jack-a–es need to get their party together because right now, they are just handing republicants this election. It just reflects the lack of organization within the party. Trust me. Sitting from outside and looking in, they all look foolish. If there’s anything the republicants can do, it’s run a high-quality smear campaign. With what the dems are doing these days, they’re putting Carl Rove and his klan out of work.

no, that’s black people aren’t riding for obama because he’s black. that’s the biggest misconception. the split of the black support for obama clearly proves that black people aren’t riding for obama merely due to his color, just like him winning iowa and nearly winning new hampshire isn’t due to him being black.
in fact, it’s more apparent, as well as troubling IMO, that a large percentage of black people are riding with hillary out of pure loyalty. most of that group are the elder people of color that lived thru the civil rights era and want to right with people that are from their generation. being that obama isn’t from that era and see things more in common with people rising up today it’s more of the reason those from 40 and below are more likely riding with him.
it’s the media that wants to play the racial theme, and they are doing it effectively. we always want to play with stereotypes. we believe them more then anybody outside our race and the stereotype of black people voting for a black man ONLY because he’s black is one of the big stereotypes placed upon us. how can that perception be possible while we are being either so-indecisive or so split for endorsing either or?

Thank God for your lives and the ability to explain what I have been trying to understand for the last few months. American politics is very different from British politics in that the campaigns are not as sexcy or as polished, the ridiculous amounts of funding is not seen this side of the pond or the rallies or talk show appearances. Whenever I try to found out anything about Hilary and Obama, all I get is soundbites or fancy slogans. I wanted to know there position on things other than the war. I wanted to know what they have done for their country…..
THANKYOU for EXPLAINING…LOL
Even though my opinion means absolutely nothing during election time. I will say this, I find it particularly interesting that now that there is potentially a black candidate brilliant enough to be president, a great number of black people feel they need to do extensive research on him before deciding whether or not he is worthy of their vote. I remember during the last election I use to frequent African-American blogs and websites and there was not this much furore and debate as to who was going to get their vote. It was simply a matter of who they liked.
Why do people insist on changing their model for President….I am sorry if you can vote for Bush twice, a man who has yet to prove to me he made it pass the early years of high school education …then come on….
I am not suggesting for one second that you should vote for Obama because he is black, but why muddy the man’s name, question his morality and ability to do be your president simply because he is black.
Not wishing to offend anyone, but all those who sing the praises of Bill Clinton are very forgiving or are being ignorant of all the actions he committed whilst he was president that had a negative impact on the black community. I think African-Americans should be insulted when statements that he was America’s first black president is made… To me the statement is implying that black existence consists of playing the saxophone (BADLY), hanging out in Harlem and receiving extra favours from your subordinates at work.
All I am saying is African-Americans be an example to the rest of the world…Apply the same scrutiny your applying to Obama to all the candidates.
On another note….I for one am very mistrusting of Hilary as far as I am concerned she is riding the coat tails of her husband and has yet to demonstrate why she should be President other than the fact she stood by her adulterous and deceitful husband!

I really hate that the general public is so stupid to actually believe that there was a back and forth race argument between Obama and the Clintons. From what I saw it was the Clintons making ignorant comments then blaming Obama for their ignorance. The Clintons also kept attacking Obama professionally and personally and Obama wouldn’t respond to their ignorance. The Clinton campaign was the ones who created this whole race issue and then flipped it to make people think that Obama started it. The Clinton machine is ruthless and it is at work to bring down Obama, let’s just hope that it backfires in their faces. And also to all you Clinton supporters who are always talking about how good the Clintons have been to us black folks, since when were the Clintons so good to the black community. What have the Clintons done for us. And futhermore do you know that more black people were locked up during the Clinton years than ever before. And also to the gay community, do you know that in 1996 Bill Clinton passed the Defense of Marriage Act which denied recognition to same-sex couples and gave states rights to ignore gay and lesbian marriages. All these minority groups have not gained anything from the Clinton era and yet they support him anyway. That is what’s truely sad.

I agree with you 100%. I find it amazing that other black people are criticizing Obama more than anyone else. I honestly beleive that if Obama were white, black folks would not even question his abilities like they are doing now. Just look at Hillary no black person is questioning her so-called 35 years of experience. 35 years of what, being a politician’s wife. Give me break, I think that Hillary is exaggerating her experience, yet no one is questionin her like they are Obama.

First of all the comment did not make any sense. The Clintons became deeply and emotionally involved in African American issues when Bill ran for President the first and then the second time. Go Obama!!!!!!!!!!
People let’s give credit where credit is due, Obama has change a lot of people already. I’m a mother of six and I really appreciate a person who has made young people so interested in Politics. I don’t think a lot of parents can say that when their children got older that you could sit around the table at dinner and talk Politics. We have never seen so many young people interested in Politics, which in itself is history. I support Obama because I see someone that will not only listen to what we as the people have to say but also do his research. I two have watched the process of both Political campaigns Democrats and Republican and I two was going to vote for Hillary. I ask do we want someone who resorts to negative tactics to lead us; we have seen time and time again what Hillary is capable of when the going gets tuff. I want someone who knows that voting for a credit card bankrucopy bill is not in the best interest of the people, or someone to know that War isn’t the answer. I feel that every time Hillary feels that Obama has a lead on her she pulls out all the stop, Ask yourselves why now after 10 years is she going on TV to talk about Bills’ affair. Hillary sees that Obama is leading in some polls and tied with her in others and anything that she can do to put the attention back on herself she will. I don’t want a dishonest person, a person who tries to insult a person for being honest on his flaws., I see Obama as a person who can go to the other Countries and get us back the alliance that we had before it’s not to say that we can trust them but a least give them a different perspective on America. Obama has already shown that he can work with others outside of his party and work with other people in his party. I don’t think this should be about race either but whom we feel would be the better candidate. I also like John Edward he a little radical at times but he is also a good candidate. I think we can all see that every candidate has there weakness and their strength.

Hey #63, I think you have a valid point, I hear that there are super delegates along with the delegates candidates win in each states. At this point it sounds like Hillary has more of the super delegrates. Don’t be discouraged Obama supporters. Hang in there. Obama is the best candidate for this election, however Hillary is establishment, Latinos as a block tend to vote together unlike blacks, but never the less, it is interesting that we are, and will, hand this election over to another republican in the fall. We will probably see Latinos leaving this country if the republicans have there way. We as democrats always vote against our own best interest. Why? What then, hopefull we won’t see another Katrina, but anything is possible. Race is a huge factor in Nevada, we are overlooking that fact that latinos hate blacks, and most of them work in Nevada. Race does matter. Why can’t we as blacks work together.

I was really disappointed to see how blatantly BET has been supporting Hillary Clinton. Not saying that because BET is a network for blacks, that it has an obligation to support Obama, but I think it was wrong for them to show such strong support for one candidate over the other. BET has a major platform to inform and educate millions of blacks and other who watch the channel, why not be fair to the viewers and present each of the candidates and how their possible election will affect blacks. Just another reason why I’ve completely stopped watching that mess of a network.

I beg of people to look more in depth to Bill Clinton’s track record. On his watch he was very instrumental in erroding the safe net in this country, privitization of social and basic needs by big business corporations, end of welfare and the list goes on. It is not about what he did for black people, its more about what he made us feel. Nothing but reverse psychology. I agree he is a cool white man but really he’s pockets got fat too - by exploiting us, black people. We all have opinions SURE but can we stop spreading the lies? Be active in your community, do your part, work with young people, educate yourself and others about the issues, research your history and let’s get free starting with our minds because we know the deal but refuse to do anything about it - collectively! Of course they will always question a black man’s experience because MOST black folks think black men are stupid anyways. And I said blacks because they blind.Blacks are racist to their own race than white people.
I’m still trying to figure out what experience Hilary Clinton has.I don’t see it.35 years?Um ok, don’t mean you doing anything. My dad has 29 years of experience in the medical field and they kicked him because he wanted to get Lt. The Clinton supporters are wrong. They got on a losing team. And among them, civil rights pioneer Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) who seemed like they dragged him kicking and screaming to that endorsement. And Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.) — I just was suprised. It isn’t about race at all with the lawmakers and they are actually doing Obama a favor. He doesn’t need their support to be president, he will get a substainsial amount of AA support. Clinton, on the other hand has to pander, so she does. Nothing against her, expect her claim to national expereince which is a joke but her endorsements are just that. They do not represent the “race.” Futhermore, they are on the wrong side of history here. They will be sorry, just wait.

Newscutie and Young Zo that is honest of both of you. I would say do your resaerch. Vote for who you want. And by all means, don’t vote based on race because that’s the last thing we would want white people to do since they are the majority, there will never be a minority candidate. It’s not about race, it never has been up until now. But you are right, you should be CRITICAL of news sources. We all know that FOX new is a joke, but some people don’t know that CNN is owned by Walmart, which Jillary Clinton used to sit on the board of. SO that may explain alot to people and why they are consantly doing peices on race and interjected race in as much as they can. Its a fear tactic.
Look at the issues. And remember that politicans will always break your heart. No matter how much you like them. The issues that effect me may be different for you. And look at the “experience” that these candidates are talking about. Ask yourself what quantifies as “experience”? Not only that don’t let endorsements scare you or persuade you. And above all…..vote. No matter who you vote for.
Even though I’m for Obama, I CHOSE him. I knew his record from the start and the experience he had as a politican for over a decade, as an organizer, etc. And you, though I’d hope you join me in voting for who I think is the best candidate, above all I’d want you to do what’s best for you. If its one thing that I have truly understood, looking at history, reading books what have you to try and put together the pieces of Blacks, particular those of us who are decendants of slaves, is that some of us would rather put down our fellow man than to see him succeed. Yes the Clintons may have done good for the Black community, or maybe some do consider Bill Clinton to be the ‘first Black President’, but at the end of the day, we could potentially have a Black Man in office in 2008. Politics is politricks, everything is a gamble, and for Mr. Johnson to put Obama down, bad call. Obama could potentially set the pave for YOUR children or childrens children who have a dream to become President, and know that their dreams could definitely be real this time around, they could even be alot better than Obama if he is elected, who knows. The point is, this is history in the making, we need to make a milestone so that WE as BLACK PEOPLE can move forward regardless.

I don’t think much of Bob Johnson but I never have. I bet all of these people saying f*ck him now were (or are) some BET loving, “turn on BET”, “I want my BET” types in the 90’s. Barack has his black billionaire and Hillary has her black billionaire. Both the billionaires have issues in my opinion. They both have done Uncle or Aunt Tom type stuff.
Here’s an FYI - it’s ok to be black and not vote for Barack. The man is making history. We do not know what type of leader he’ll be. We do not know what type of leader Hillary will be. It is time for Mr Bush to go and I think all of the hype around both the Democratic and Republican primaries is because of that.
Finally, it is historic that a woman and a black man are viable candidates. Let’s not fight, let’s revel in that reality.

My mom is 49 and she told me when I first voted at 18 that she may not live to see a black man or black woman elected president. But she would hope that by that time our own race would have faith in a black man or black woman’s skills. I’m 22 now a college graduate and my mom and I are voting for Obama because it”s the RIGHT VOTE for the RIGHT MAN. As my older relatives and I have discussed this election, we all know how we as a race have gone through so many negative and positive situations. But black people as a ethnic group never really understood are strength in numbers. The time has coming to stop listening to the groups who really know how to divide us as we have done on so many occasions. Believe with all your might that this man Obama isn’t Jesus but he is someone special, he is somewhat unique and there is something unexplainable in the air in this election. This could be a standard for all little black males who dare to dream, this could be what propels young black females to go beyond hope and dare to achieve. In this moment so many opportunities await us! Voting for Obama is the right thing to do. Morally and ethically.

Well coming from a stand point of I am both BLACK and WHITE.. as I posted before it is down right stupid to vote for someone simply because he is black. I am not on Clinton’s side either though.
I see a lot of people saying vote for him because he is black like us…. okay and then what? Is that the answer to helping create a more “equal” world… okay now the president is black but the majority of congress is still white. I think they will stand up to the black president more than they did bush if they don’t agree with the political agenda.
So what we as “black” people are going to stand up and do what? Be just as racist towards white people as their ANCESTORS and yeah some alive now are towards us? Double standards wont change the world.

I heard Bob Johnson’s lame excuse of what he said on the Michael Baisden radio show the other day and he is a complete idiot. He only tried to retract what he said after listeners of Baisden’s show complained about what he said. Hell, Johnson probably did some things in his teenage years he may not have been to proud of. What gives this dummy the right to call out Obama? Please sit down Bob. You dumb a*s should have stayed at BET cause your current head huncho Debra isn’t doing much.

@ 107 Yep. Its true. Hillary Clinton just isnt amiable enough. She’d lose the Presidency simply b/c of that. I mean, lets just be honest here. No matter how hard you try to put it, Americans vote for the best candidate that they LIKE. Its almost a popularity Contest. Sure they might do research b4 voting, but in the end it still all comes down to WHO YOU LIKE the MOST.
Hillary is popular, Obama is popular. But Obama is MORE popular than Hillary, especially with Independents and Republicans. And b/c of that, she’d lose the presidential election while Obama has the power of UNITING different parties under one cause.
Ive heard SO SO SO many people say they’d rather vote for McCain or Huckabee (No one likes Romney the Mormon) instead Hillary should she ever receive the Democratic nomination. Whichever way you spin it, Hillary is screwed. And i used to be a Hillary Supporter until I realized how slim her chances are.
I agree with what someone else said. This election really is about the Old era vs. New. Its the reason why so many young people are deeply invested in this election, b/c of Obama. He represents the new age for most of us. And most of the youth dont even LIKE Hillary. And this time, a Democrat WILL win the Presidency, if its Obama. People are simply just tired of the Republican mess.
I fear that there will be an assassination attempt on Obama’s life being the first viable black presidential candidate.
I also slightly agree with #76.
A posting of all the candidates and their stances on here would really help and EDUCATE the ignorant ones on which candidate is actually on their side….

nomosoul, also thank you too for your analysis, those are the types of comments from Hillary supporters that I respect. Not because you’re starting to go against Hillary but because of the thought process that you’re taking to analyze your candidate (Clinton). You’re reflection was honest and I truly respect that.

Bob Johnson, myself along with you can say whatever we want—ummm…FREEDOM of Speech is what it’s called, or have we forgotten about that right we American’s enjoy? Why are people now being forced to apologize for their viewpoints and voicing their opinions? We can’t be an advocate for something and then not condone it. Silence is forbidden…if it’s on your mind, SAY IT!

- I want to pull my hair out everytime someone says they’re voting for Obama because he’s black; I hear people saying Obama will “instill hope” in the black race. etc, all this sentimental hooplah and not a word about his policies (so basically voting for him because he’s black). Out of this whole thread only like one person mentioned his actually policies
- Obama is being endorsed by John Kerry and John Kerry is in a secret society (Skulls and Bones) with Bush. Bush vice president is Dick Cheney and Dick Cheney’s cousin is Barack Obama! And you’re worried for Obama’s safety? LOL what a joke. They’re all connected and Obama’s wife sits on the Council of Foreign Relations with most of the presidential candidates so….
once again black people are letting themselves be played

BARACK IS A DIGNIFIED MAN OF AFRICAN DECENT, HE REPRESENTS DIVERSITY IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY AND HE SEEMS TO BE A DOWN TO EARTH PERSON. BOB HAS THE FREEDOM TO REPRESENT WHO HE WANT TO REPRESENT POLITICALLY, BUT HE TOOK IT TOO FAR. I HATE TO SAY THIS, BUT MOST PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY HAVE A CRAB IN THE BARREL MENTALITY. JOHNSON SOLD OUT HIS PEOPLE BY NOT ALLOWING FOR DIVERSITY TO BE DISPLAYED ON BET. HE IS KISSING UP TO HILLARY SO THAT HE CAN STAY ON WHITE FOLKS GOOD SIDE.

Nastassia - HRC's 35 yrs of WHAT experience??
Saturday, January 19, 2008 /
Hillary Clinton keeps talking about her 35 years of experience. “I am offering 35 years of experience making change,” she said in New Hampshire. “I’m not just running on a promise of change, I’m running on 35 years of change.” And she repeatedly mentioned the 35 years again in this week’s debate in Las Vegas.
Well, Senator Clinton, I’m confused. I’ve done the math. You’re 60, which means that 35 years ago you were 25. And I Googled your name, looking for all the change you were making as a 25 year old and, frankly, I’m not finding much. You were going to Yale Law School at the time — which I’m sure was a personally transformative experience, but it’s hardly the kind of change that should count on one’s Presidential Training Experience resume, is it? Is that when you started your personal Working-for-Change-O-Meter?
That summer, the summer of 1972, you campaigned in Texas for George McGovern’s unsuccessful presidential bid. A worthy — if ultimately futile — endeavor to be sure, but a notch on your Years of Change belt? Kind of a stretch, don’t you think?
But as liberal as you are with your Experience Arithmetic, you are awfully stingy when it comes to the experience and background of Barack Obama.
“He was a part-time state senator for a few years,” you recently said of Obama, “and then he came to the Senate and immediately started running for president,” she said. “And that’s his prerogative. That’s his right. But I think it is important to compare and contrast our records.”
For starters, the state senate in Illinois is not a full-time job, but you make it sound like he was some kind of political temp worker, just filling in when someone called in sick. But leaving that aside, why is it that you get to count your time canvassing for McGovern as working for change, but Obama’s time as a community organizer and public housing advocate aren’t worthy of mention? And what about his time at Harvard Law (where he was the first black president in the history of the Harvard Law Review)? Doesn’t count? But your time at Yale Law does? In the now immortal words of your husband: Give me a break.
I know you are good person who is devoted to public service. But that doesn’t absolve you of the responsibility to not distort your record. And to not distort the record of your opponent.
Your 35 years talking point just doesn’t add up.

AND…BILL SHOULD HAVE PIMP SLAPPED HILLARY FOR TRYING TO IMPLY THAT MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DIDN’T GET THE JOB DONE. LYNDON JOHNSON WAS THE PRESIDENT, SO OF COURSE HE WOULD BE ABLE TO GET BILLS PASSED AND IDEAS INTO LAWS. BUT DR. KING, MALCOLM, THEIR PEOPLE, THE OLD MAN WHO LIVES DOWN THE BLOCK, YOUR AUNT FRANCINE OR WHOEVER STOOD UP AT THE TIME TO BRING ATTENTION AND ALERT THE MASSES THAT THINGS HAD TO CHANGE FOR ALL PEOPLE TO HAVE BETTER AND SAFER LIVES. JOHNSON REACTED BECAUSE HE HAD TO OR THERE WOULD BE MORE VIOLENCE AND MORE BAD LIGHT BROUGHT ON AMERICA SHOWING THE REST OF THE WORLD THE EMBARRASSING TREATMENT THAT CERTAIN RACES AND CLASSES WERE, AND IN SOME INSTANCES STILL, RECEIVING. THE CLINTON’S LOST ALL RESPECT FROM ME THE MOMENT I SAW IN PRINT WHAT THAT TRICK OF A CHICK SAID. HAS ANYONE HEARD THAT SHE HAS RETRACTED OR APOLOGIZED FOR THAT IDIOTIC STATEMENT. “HE WAS JUST A BIG TALKER…” IF HE WAS JUST A BIG TALKER, WE WOULDN’T STILL BE TALKING ABOUT HIM OR REPEATING HIS WORDS. BIG TALKERS GET MORE DONE THAN SHELTERED, CLOSE MINDED PEOPLE LIKE HILLARY GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR…JESUS, NELSON MANDELA, GHANDI, MOTHER TERESA, ETC. THE PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THEIR BIG TALK LIVES WERE CHANGED DRAMATICALLY FOR THE BETTER YEARS, DECADES, MILLENNIA LATER. HILLARY’S WORDS WILL … UMM, NOT SO MUCH.

“Black politicians who are supporting Clinton are “good old boys.”
They are business-as-usual, old-guard politicians and it’s hard for them to break out of that mold. Blacks who doubt Obama’s ability to compete are guilty of “a slave mentality. No matter how much education they have, they never graduated from the slave mentality. The slavery mentality compels us to say, ‘We can’t win, we can’t do.”

Politics.. I love it!
This has to be one of the most interesting races I’ve ever seen in my years. I have been a Young Black Republican since high school and this race has certainly had me looking outside my party lines. I am utterly shocked that Black folks are so blind to follow the Clintons and worship them like they are Gods. Bill and Hillary are two of the most deceitful and conniving couples in Washington. Let me know what they have done for Black America?? I’m curious if anyone actually has an answer for that one.
I find it interesting that the Clintons sought out another Black person to try to smear the character of Obama. Bob Johnson should be ashamed of himself. There is no way in the world you gonna get me out there trash talking another brother or sister who is trying to do something positive. I think it makes us all look bad.
Barack Obama strikes me as one who can actually lead this country in a better direction.
When I think about the time that the Clintons were in Washington I can’t help but remember Whitewater, Monica Lewinsky Scandal oh yeah and the White House room for Rent program!! Oh yea, I forgot to mention all the pardons Clinton issued for the right amount!!! What a legacy!

First, I need to thank Stop-the-Hate, the young brother on the last thread on Bob Johnson’s idiot comments, for suggesting that I re-think my ambivalence about Barack Obama after visiting some sites he referenced. I am now leaning toward Obama
Hey Guys, I thought you all might be interested in something I just posted on John Ridley’s blog on Huff Post. Its still under moderation.
Here’s my comment to Ridley’s spiel on the unimportance of the internet in the upcoming election:
The right has always understood the internet’s value much better than the left. Check out this seemingly innocuous piece by Cindy Adams, New York Post gossip columnist.
http://www.nypost.com/sev...he_oval_office_700665.htm
In it, she lays the groundwork for a draft Supreme Court Justice Alito for president campaign; she uses Will Smith to characterize Obama’s candidacy as laughable; and she dismisses the country’s growing movement toward citizen activism (a plus for Obama) by slamming Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as little more than sex freaks. She even throws in a little anti-Semitism for the Christian right. Coincidence? Not hardly.
While we on the left are debating the power of the internet, the right wing is using it effectively. The millions of people Cindy Adams reaches (not through the newspaper but through the internet) are the silent majority who will decide the outcome of the upcoming presidential election.
My hope is that the millions of young people being reached through sites like concreteloop.com will be a counterbalance. One thing is for sure, we better get as savvy about the internet as the right, or we’re doomed.
Incidentally, Adams is listed as a scientologist as are Halderman and Ehrlichman, Nixon’s diabolical twins. Will Smith must’ve resisted Tom Cruise’s recruitment efforts.

No surprise to see that Stepin Fetchit is alive and kicking and using the name Bob Johnson. How sad that a white woman can always some foolish Black man to do their dirty work. Bob Johnson should be concerning himself with the stereotypical junk he has been transmitting on BET and not seeking to denigrate an outstanding presidential candidate, the most credible Black presidential candidate ever, Barak Obama. Maybe Johnson’s problem is that he likes the idea of being head coon and likes dancing to Hillary’s tune.
Black people are not a homogeneous lump who all need to vote democrat but what is apalling is that some coons can’t see through Hillary - she’s not Bill. She will do anything to get that nomination, she will stamp on anyone in her path and keep shedding crocodile tears (were people really that gullible). But I note that Barak is too dignified I hope doesn’t join her in the gutter.
She does not deserve mindless Black support

African Americans and Black people in general have been whipped by the whole issue of Slavery that their psyche is not always their own. By that I mean they can be heavily influenced by a media that often denigrates them to look at other Black people through similar suspicious lens. Therefore, eventhough there have always been issues around many of the other candidates how often do you hear Black people saying that they would not choose someone who may have had a reefer, eventhough they may not have inhaled. Barak has been honest in a way that many of the others have not. Maybe if we started rooting around in some closets we might find a lot more than infidelity - but how much research are Black people doing on them if they had been would the present incumbent be there I wonder?
