POLITICAL ROUND UP: CELEBS @ OBAMA EVENT / THOMPSON DROPS OUT / FALSE PRETENSES LED U.S. TO WAR?

( Photos: Corey Brunson / SCSU Student )

Barack Obama and many of his celebrity supporters stopped by South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, S.C., on Tuesday to speak with the students. Among the celebs were Kerry Washington, Chris Tucker, and Usher.

Corey Brunson, a student at SCSU sent in these photos and a recap:

Just thought I would share these pics with you guys! I attend SCSU and went to the Obama event.

…Barack hit strong points as to why we should vote for him, lowering gas prices, college tuition, extending the age teenagers can stay on their parents health insurance and much more. It was a packed house and afterwards they were all willing to take pics and sign autographs. It was great!

THOMPSON DROPS OUT

Former TN Sen. Fred Thompson may have played a U.S. president in a made-for-TV movie (Ulysses S. Grant in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee), but he will not get a chance at the real role in November.

Thompson announced Tuesday he had ended his run for the White House after earning a disappointing third place finish in South Carolina’s Republican primary.

According to a statement on his website:

“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.”

As I mentioned in the Nevada Recap, South Carolina is key because since 1980, no Republican candidate has managed to make it to the White House without winning the state’s primary.

I actually thought Thompson might be a real contender; look at other actors who made the transition into politics: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura, former President Ronald Reagan. Additionally, he ran the fourth largest presidential campaign behind Romney, Guiliani and McCain, respectively.

In farewell fashion, Sean Hackberth, who worked for Thompson’s eCampaign, wrote:

“Fred Thompson ran for President with his head held high. He offered conservative ideas that set him apart from all the other candidates. Politics is a strange affair. The person you think would be the best leader for America sometimes doesn’t win.”

FALSE PRETENSES LED U.S. TO WAR?

(Photo: AP)

A study posted Tuesday on the Center for Public Integrity’s website concludes that President Bush and top administration officials issued 935 false statements regarding the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

According to the report, the statements:

“were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses.”

The study found that in speeches, briefings, interviews as well as other venues, Bush and other administration officials stated on at least 532 occasions that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or was trying to produce or obtain them or had links to al-Qaida or both.

“It is now beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to al-Qaida,” according to Charles Lewis and Mark Reading-Smith of the Fund for Independence in Journalism staff members, writing an overview of the study. “In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003.”

LOWERING GAS PRICES, COLLEGE TUITION???? YOU CRAZY??? THOSE THINGS AFFECT EVERYONE. IT IS NOT SOMETHING SPECIFIC TO THE BLACK COMMUNITY LIKE:

TAKING A FIRM STAND TO END WORK FORCE DISCRIMINATION
    VIGOROUS PROSECUTION OF HATE CRIMES
VIGOROUS PROSECUTION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT WHO DISCRIMINATE
    ENDING HOUSING DISCRIMINATION
    ENDING BANK LOAN DISCRIMINATION
    EQUAL TREATMENT UNDER THE LAW
PUTTING AN END TO THIS RISING RASCISM
ENDING AFFIRMATIVE ACTION FOR NEW IMMIGRANTS
    HELP FOR MINORITY BUSINESSES
SAVE OUR INNER CITY CHILDREN PROGRAMS
SAVE OUR KIDS IN THE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM
DECRIMINALIZING DRUG USE – IT IS A DISABILITY

JUST AS I THOUGHT. HE’S NOT GOING TO DO A DAMN THING FOR PROBLEMS THAT ARE SPECIFIC TO THE BLACK COMMUNITY.

Are we really surprised about the miss-information about the War? I thought people found out about this a long time ago.

    Go Barack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. KAY

OBAMA HIRES NOTHING BUT WHITES AT THE UPPER ECHELONS OF HIS CAMPAIGN. HE IS JUST LIKE THE IDIOT OPRAH WHO HIRES LESS BLACKS THAN A WHITE RASCIST.

A PERSON WITHOUT A JOB, ISN’T WORRIED ABOUT GAS PRICES AND TUITION.

COLLEGE DOESN’T GUARANTEE A BLACK PERSON A JOB THESE DAYS. THE HEAVILY INDEBITED BLACK COLLEGE GRADUATES THESE DAYS ARE ROUTINELY INFORMED THAT THEY ARE “OVERLY QUALIFIED FOR THE POSITION” ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT A PERSON WHO CAN BARELY SPEAK ENGLISH GOT THE JOB. WHAT IS OBAMA GOING TO DO ABOUT THAT???

  17. Shay

Lowering college Tuition will help my BLACK ASS.

  18. VIOLA

STOP FOOLING OUR YOUNG PEOPLE OBAMA, AND TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THEIR GUILLIBILITY. THE OLD GUARD DON’T SUPPORT YOU BECAUSE THEY KNOW YOU’RE IN THIS ONLY FOR YOU – NOT TO HELP WITH THE SUFFERINGS OF THE BLACK MASSES. YOU’RE NO MLK.

  19. Destiny

I have listened to all three of the candidates, and If I had to choose, I would choose Obama. Yes, of course his race plays a part, but I was also very intrested in Clinton. But, I like many other people are beginning to listen to the issues. And Obama has some very intresting things to say. I dont agree with everything, especially his healthcare plan and maybe his stimulus plan, but in general I like what hes had to say. And although Hillary made a great first lady, theres a diff. between that and ACTUALLY being the president. I was too through with her after she made the MLK remark. O, and by the way start paying more attention to Edwards. He hasnt won that many delegates, but I think he would be a damn good president. He was one of the VERY FEW politicians (white or black) to speak out on the Jena 6. Also he knows what its like to grow up poor in the south. Him and Obama should get on the same ticket.

  20. H2O

It’s nice that celebrities are supporting Obama, but I could care less about who they are endorsing. I have realized recently that some are really in love with the whole Obama image, but after watching the debate the other night I realized that he may be in over his head. He’s a great speaker, I can say that much.

He has done things for the Black community check his website do research. When you are Black in this country you can’t come out the gate talking like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson you would never get elected. He if singles the Black community out from the start he wont get the nomination or even elected for the matter. He needs to speaking on behalf of everybody and then when office do what he can and will for the Black community.

South Carolina on the Map. Thats whatsup. Yeah it was ridiculous downtown that day.

  23. @ 12

…he is running for the president of the United States of America, his plans must be good for all people.
As far as rising racism goes first of all he can not put an end to the way anyone thinks of others or themselves…people must decide for themselves what and whom they will believe in and build their own self worth….as for the other issues give the man a chance to get into office…..all the problems did not occur overnight and they willl not end and at least he has not stood their and lied about what he would do about your concerns when he knows these things exist and will take time to CHANGE!!!!

and read the post again because she said he metnioned other things as well, get away hating and you don’t have to vote for him okay…..now can we move on…NEXT please.

  24. Christina Faith

Ok so my question is this. If the United States is in the biggest budget deficit of its history. How in the world is Obama going to give each college studio $4000 a year? How can we afford to provide every child with health care? and How is he going to low gas prices when the government does not set them?

  25. jolie

I really like how this site also talk about politics & other things that are and should concern the Black community. It’s good that you don’t just post entertainment news, but that you also touch on serious topics. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK CONCRET LOOP.

  26. Diamond

@ number 8: Thats real talk!
However its even more sad when people choose to vote for Hilleary because of the fact that her husband was a “good” president. Another thing that kills me is when people start jumping on the band wagon talking about how life was “good” when Clinton was president. Unless you are in your late 30′s and up, you can’t say whether or not if shit was sweet when Bill was in office. I’m 22 years old and the only thing I remember was all of drama about him gettin his d*@k sucked.
The point I’m trying to make is that we all need to do our own research instead of being followers…

  27. Miss Independent

lol @ 17, I am going to have to co-sign for that! I am feeling the idea to increase age on parent’s insurance as well! Yah SHOULD know the deal!!….Obama ’08, anythins less irrelevant!

    Step it Up J. Dakar!!!!

I peeped this story on Yahoo earlier! Then they minimized it really quick and the largest highlight became about some stupid cat missing from his owner.

I’m not suprised in the least!

This country has been lied to by that man for 8 years!

    Time for a change!

    Obama 08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. THE CLINTON HATERS ARE ON THE LOOP

I KNOW YOU ALL RECOGNIZE WHERE THE HATE IS GENRATING FROM……..HATERS UPSET ABOUT THE RALLY AND HELL YES WE VOTING FOR OBAMA…AND ITS RIGHT ABOUT THE CLINTONS FOLKS AR REALLY GETTING TIRED OF THEM AND THIS IS OUR GENRATION AND WE AIN’T HAVING IT!!!

Hell I was in Iraq in 2004 and still can’t give a reason as to why I was there…DAMN SHAME!!!!! I say Off with his head…like they did back in the day!!!!!!

  34. nc 4 barack

Man I hate that I missed the rally in SC and the chance to see Kerry! I attended the Obama-Oprah rally last month and that was a phenomenal experience! SC it’s your turn to BARACK THE VOTE!

As for Bush I can’t wait until he is out of office because both his terms as president were a joke. I think the hardest task for the next president is going to be regaining our respect with other nations in the world

  35. Cutie

I ABSOLUTELY HOPE AND PRAY THAT NO ONE THOUGHT OR BELIEVED OTHERWISE, THAT WE WENT TO WAR ON ERRONEOUS LIES AND FALSE PRETENSES!!!!“ (It is now beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to al-Qaida,” according to Charles Lewis and Mark Reading-Smith of the Fund for Independence in Journalism staff members, writing an overview of the study. “In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003.”)

  36. Ms. PT

@ 23 I agree with you wholeheartedly….@ 25 I was thinking about the same thing the other day and you are so right. I don’t remember much about Clinton’s term because i was in high school. I could’ve cared less about politics back then. Now that I’m a working adult and a parent, I am very interested now. But I will not do vote based on popularity.

  37. Step

    KAY you got a point…

#10 I agree with you! He was good on there!

#24 I cosign with you…KEEP it up Concreteloop!

  38. Step

    #32…AND MINE!!!! LOL!

  39. Cutie

To be honest, it is a hard desicion to decide who to vote for. I think ALL candidates make promises that they rarely keep, whether it is because they don’t uphold their promises, or because they make promises that they cannot realistically keep. I agree with #25 Christina Faith.
I also do not think just because we are black to vote for Obama, or because you are a woman vote for Hillary. I have always voted Democrat. But I agree with some Republican views, especially not providing welfare and food stamps to young abled body girls who continue to have children after children and EXPECT taxpayers to pay for their offspring. I am TOTALLY for maximum government assistance for the elderly, disabled, mentally retarded, and those with psychiatric disorders. But again those who have the physical and mental capacity to help them selves need to!
The main reason I have always voted Democrat is because of a probably false misconception, I do not see Republicans as being for Black people. And generally they try to impose their own ETHICAL beliefs onto others like being Pro Life only and trying to force their own DEMOCRACY unto others, when we cannot control our own country. Actual Huckabee is a good choice also because he is a very Liberal Republican. Its a hard choice. But being President of the US of A is a job I would never want!

    I agree!!!

  42. maxwell209

What differs does this discovery make? WE ALL KNEW the president was lying about the weapons. We should be asking what are they going to do about his lying under oath? The answer: Nothing! Elect a new president to clean up his mess. We have already lose thousands and thousands of innocent lives and you can’t bring back the child that went into the military so he/she could go to college without the financing being a burned on their parents. They tried to impeach Clinton for getting a little physical play in the white house now we have a president that has lied over and over again and has used American lives and money to fund his own war (for personal) gain and NO HAS TRIED TO IMPREACH HIM!!!! What is the land of the free coming too!!!

    @ # 40

I have been trying to get people to pay attention to Huckabee for forever! I agree with you I also agree with some of the republican views and I was hoping that Huckabee would get the GOP nod so if Obama didn’t get it I could vote for him.

I thought I was the only one feelling Mike Huckabee.

  44. Jay

I agree with #10. I have no respect for anyone who votes Obama just because they want to see a black man in office. They are basically doing this country a big disservice. Focus on the issues and whose going to be able to handle the job.

  45. Barack the VOTE!

Thank you “HAVE NOT THOUGHT OF A USER NAME” for checking #15 Joama.

People still don’t understand that if a candidate is running, he cannot single out his race by ONLY addressing his races issues. Get in the White Hose FIRST, then take care of bidness!

    OBAMA in 2008 BABY!!!!!

Get involved http://www.barackobama.com – phone bank, talk to your friends and family, spread the word! He can’t do this alone.

  46. Barack the VOTE!

p.s. THANKS FOR THE PHOTOS COREY! I took a great photo of Barack too when he came to Jersey City, NJ. What a great man!

  47. Barack Obama is black???

    LOL

I think black people are voting for Barack because he is a good canidate not because of his skin color. You didn’t see this much hype when Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson was running…

  48. Mixedchik08

Hillary Clinton does not care about black people. She’s not even in south carolina campaigning and after Obama wins, they’re going to whisper that he won because of the black people.

“My fellow Americans, I am sick and tired of not being president,” said Clinton, introducing his wife at a “Hillary ’08″ rally. “For seven agonizing years, I have sat idly by as others experienced the joys of campaigning, debating, and interacting with the people of this great nation, and I simply cannot take it anymore. I have to be president again. I have to.”

“Damn, this feels good,” Clinton told supporters as he shook hands in Charleston Monday.

ANYHOO- KERRY WASHINGTON LOOKS A BALD- EDGES MESS- WHAT’S GOING ON WITH HER AND THAT POINTER SISTERS DRESS?

  53. Have Not Thought of a New User Name

I know some people are voting for Barack because he is Black but most of us are not. Black folks have always voted on the issues ( we have never had the opportuity to vote on race) so it gets on my nerves to hear people say that we are only voting for him because of race. I know where he stands on the issues most important to me and I agree with him the most, being Black is just the icing on the cake.

There are some things I like or don’t like in everybody’s agenda.

  54. @15 you bought up some very good topics/points- these are things, that definitely need attention.

I would love to see/hear the candidates stance on how the government can help in the areas of helping people with mental/developmental and physical challenges(like children with autism ,some type of program to help assist the youth with life skills and tolerance among each other where each school would have as part of the everyday curriculum (because the violence ,etc- that kids go through in school is a problem and someone needs to help put a stop to it.

I guess I will have to wait and see……for know it’s a 50/50 with me.

Bush needs somebody to put a foot in his ass! “Lies”-you think?

I honestly am having a hard time making a chose between Barack and Hilliary. I was going to vote for Obama until I saw the BET news special-What’s In It for Us? and now I’m not sure who I’m pulling for……

  55. dee dee

Bush is the devil. He’s going to milk everything he can out of Iraq and out of the US economy before his term ends (which can’t be fast enough for me!)

  56. I have been following Obama a lot more recently. It’s cool celebs endorse him, but that won’t suffice my vote. I want to learn who OBAMA is and have every intention of sifting through that. He is a voice of change much needed change. but everyone has to go out and VOTE!

As for wack a** Bush, that information isn’t suprising. It really makes me mad to think and know so many of our men and women have risked their lives and had them taken because of this dumb idiot who is our president. Bush will be gone soon but the damage to America has been done and it will take a while to undo that. Please if someone hasen’t already figured it our, NEVER VOTE A BUSH INTO OFFICE!

  57. #57 you said it. I know that right, real talk!

  58. MW09

Oh man, I wish I could’ve been there. I’m glad one of my favorite people (Kerry Washington) is out to support him, she gets extra cool points from me =) .

Tell us something we didn’t know (about the war in Iraq) Bush is a bumbling buffoon, my two year old cousin could do a better job…..LOL
