POLITICAL ROUND UP: CELEBS @ OBAMA EVENT / THOMPSON DROPS OUT / FALSE PRETENSES LED U.S. TO WAR?
Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Barack Obama and many of his celebrity supporters stopped by South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, S.C., on Tuesday to speak with the students. Among the celebs were Kerry Washington, Chris Tucker, and Usher.
Corey Brunson, a student at SCSU sent in these photos and a recap:
Just thought I would share these pics with you guys! I attend SCSU and went to the Obama event.
…Barack hit strong points as to why we should vote for him, lowering gas prices, college tuition, extending the age teenagers can stay on their parents health insurance and much more. It was a packed house and afterwards they were all willing to take pics and sign autographs. It was great!
THOMPSON DROPS OUT

Former TN Sen. Fred Thompson may have played a U.S. president in a made-for-TV movie (Ulysses S. Grant in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee), but he will not get a chance at the real role in November.
Thompson announced Tuesday he had ended his run for the White House after earning a disappointing third place finish in South Carolina’s Republican primary.
According to a statement on his website:
“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.”
As I mentioned in the Nevada Recap, South Carolina is key because since 1980, no Republican candidate has managed to make it to the White House without winning the state’s primary.
I actually thought Thompson might be a real contender; look at other actors who made the transition into politics: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura, former President Ronald Reagan. Additionally, he ran the fourth largest presidential campaign behind Romney, Guiliani and McCain, respectively.
In farewell fashion, Sean Hackberth, who worked for Thompson’s eCampaign, wrote:
“Fred Thompson ran for President with his head held high. He offered conservative ideas that set him apart from all the other candidates. Politics is a strange affair. The person you think would be the best leader for America sometimes doesn’t win.”
FALSE PRETENSES LED U.S. TO WAR?

(Photo: AP)
A study posted Tuesday on the Center for Public Integrity’s website concludes that President Bush and top administration officials issued 935 false statements regarding the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.
According to the report, the statements:
“were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses.”
The study found that in speeches, briefings, interviews as well as other venues, Bush and other administration officials stated on at least 532 occasions that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or was trying to produce or obtain them or had links to al-Qaida or both.
“It is now beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to al-Qaida,” according to Charles Lewis and Mark Reading-Smith of the Fund for Independence in Journalism staff members, writing an overview of the study. “In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003.”

OBAMA HIRES NOTHING BUT WHITES AT THE UPPER ECHELONS OF HIS CAMPAIGN. HE IS JUST LIKE THE IDIOT OPRAH WHO HIRES LESS BLACKS THAN A WHITE RASCIST.
A PERSON WITHOUT A JOB, ISN’T WORRIED ABOUT GAS PRICES AND TUITION.
COLLEGE DOESN’T GUARANTEE A BLACK PERSON A JOB THESE DAYS. THE HEAVILY INDEBITED BLACK COLLEGE GRADUATES THESE DAYS ARE ROUTINELY INFORMED THAT THEY ARE “OVERLY QUALIFIED FOR THE POSITION” ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT A PERSON WHO CAN BARELY SPEAK ENGLISH GOT THE JOB. WHAT IS OBAMA GOING TO DO ABOUT THAT???

I have listened to all three of the candidates, and If I had to choose, I would choose Obama. Yes, of course his race plays a part, but I was also very intrested in Clinton. But, I like many other people are beginning to listen to the issues. And Obama has some very intresting things to say. I dont agree with everything, especially his healthcare plan and maybe his stimulus plan, but in general I like what hes had to say. And although Hillary made a great first lady, theres a diff. between that and ACTUALLY being the president. I was too through with her after she made the MLK remark. O, and by the way start paying more attention to Edwards. He hasnt won that many delegates, but I think he would be a damn good president. He was one of the VERY FEW politicians (white or black) to speak out on the Jena 6. Also he knows what its like to grow up poor in the south. Him and Obama should get on the same ticket.

I have realized recently that some are really in love with the whole Obama image, but after watching the debate the other night I realized that he may be in over his head. He’s a great speaker, I can say that much.

When you are Black in this country you can’t come out the gate talking like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson you would never get elected. He if singles the Black community out from the start he wont get the nomination or even elected for the matter. He needs to speaking on behalf of everybody and then when office do what he can and will for the Black community.

As far as rising racism goes first of all he can not put an end to the way anyone thinks of others or themselves…people must decide for themselves what and whom they will believe in and build their own self worth….as for the other issues give the man a chance to get into office…..all the problems did not occur overnight and they willl not end and at least he has not stood their and lied about what he would do about your concerns when he knows these things exist and will take time to CHANGE!!!!
and read the post again because she said he metnioned other things as well, get away hating and you don’t have to vote for him okay…..now can we move on…NEXT please.

Ok so my question is this. If the United States is in the biggest budget deficit of its history. How in the world is Obama going to give each college studio $4000 a year? How can we afford to provide every child with health care? and How is he going to low gas prices when the government does not set them?

However its even more sad when people choose to vote for Hilleary because of the fact that her husband was a “good” president. Another thing that kills me is when people start jumping on the band wagon talking about how life was “good” when Clinton was president. Unless you are in your late 30’s and up, you can’t say whether or not if shit was sweet when Bill was in office. I’m 22 years old and the only thing I remember was all of drama about him gettin his d*@k sucked.
The point I’m trying to make is that we all need to do our own research instead of being followers…

To be honest, it is a hard desicion to decide who to vote for. I think ALL candidates make promises that they rarely keep, whether it is because they don’t uphold their promises, or because they make promises that they cannot realistically keep. I agree with #25 Christina Faith.
I also do not think just because we are black to vote for Obama, or because you are a woman vote for Hillary. I have always voted Democrat. But I agree with some Republican views, especially not providing welfare and food stamps to young abled body girls who continue to have children after children and EXPECT taxpayers to pay for their offspring. I am TOTALLY for maximum government assistance for the elderly, disabled, mentally retarded, and those with psychiatric disorders. But again those who have the physical and mental capacity to help them selves need to!
The main reason I have always voted Democrat is because of a probably false misconception, I do not see Republicans as being for Black people. And generally they try to impose their own ETHICAL beliefs onto others like being Pro Life only and trying to force their own DEMOCRACY unto others, when we cannot control our own country. Actual Huckabee is a good choice also because he is a very Liberal Republican. Its a hard choice. But being President of the US of A is a job I would never want!

What differs does this discovery make? WE ALL KNEW the president was lying about the weapons. We should be asking what are they going to do about his lying under oath? The answer: Nothing! Elect a new president to clean up his mess. We have already lose thousands and thousands of innocent lives and you can’t bring back the child that went into the military so he/she could go to college without the financing being a burned on their parents. They tried to impeach Clinton for getting a little physical play in the white house now we have a president that has lied over and over again and has used American lives and money to fund his own war (for personal) gain and NO HAS TRIED TO IMPREACH HIM!!!! What is the land of the free coming too!!!

@15 you bought up some very good topics/points- these are things, that definitely need attention.
I would love to see/hear the candidates stance on how the government can help in the areas of helping people with mental/developmental and physical challenges(like children with autism ,some type of program to help assist the youth with life skills and tolerance among each other where each school would have as part of the everyday curriculum (because the violence ,etc- that kids go through in school is a problem and someone needs to help put a stop to it.
I guess I will have to wait and see……for know it’s a 50/50 with me.
Bush needs somebody to put a foot in his ass! “Lies”-you think?

Okay so you must have miss the first sentence that I said which was: I know some people are voting for him based on race, but alot are not. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton ran for office as well and not many African Americans voted or even would of bothered to vote for them. So if all African Americans were voting on race, why didn’t they make it past the first round.
Like I stated before African Americans that have voted have always voted on the issues, race was never an option.

Obama is getting a lot of support and I am glad to see young black entertainers engaged in the process -
There will constantly be this debate over supporting Obama just because he’s Black… is the reverse of that philosphy not to support him BECAUSE he’s Black?
You must make your choices and decisions on the issues. Be real, if the choice were Obama and Condoleeza - who would you chose?
If the choice is Hillary and Edwards - who would you choose.
Most people and all of the politicians knew going into this war that it was under false pretenses… It didn’t take 5 years and a study to figure that out.
See beyond ethicity - get to the facts.

See beyond ethicity - get to the facts.
Most people and all of the politicians knew going into this war that it was under false pretenses… It didn’t take 5 years and a study to figure that out.

#17 and #69 I feel you. Although they say education debt is not bad debt, but rather it is a investment. It still feels like bad debt to me. I do still believe education is important, but is worth all the debt that most of us come out with? So many people in our generation come out with so much debt they end up staying with their parents years after graduation and many forgo buying their first home because of their debt obligations. Educational institutions must to do more to help minorities succeed in their lives beyond college. Its not enough to just let us in, they have to make sure we finish in good standing. Some schools are not about making sure that it’s students are educated, many are all about making money at the expense of students trying to better themselves.

I co-sign with no.15 & 17. Excellent points and beyond that, I don’t understand why someone that objectively criticizes Obama’s shrewd attempt to play the “colorblind black candidate” that will rescue both America and black America must be pro-Hillary. Should Obama lose the democratic nomination, all you voting negroes will be pro-Hillary.

This is ridiculous. Some people will vote for Barack b/c he’s black, but guess what, A LOT OF US ARE VOTING FOR HIM B/C HE’S A WELL-ROUNDED CANDIDATE.
Only Latinos or maybe Asians or Indians would vote blindly for a presidential candidate that looks like them but blacks? We vote for who is best qualified, who best suits us. We’re looking out for interest, not b/c of race. It’s the candor of the candidate Proof? As someone said earlier when Al Sharpton was running for Prez was their massive support for him? Noooo, b/c we recognize a crook and a joke when we see one.
(unless some of u fools voted for Bush not just once but TWICE. Then you’re just an idiot. Enough said. No wonder the world thinks we’re stupid. Everyone hates Bush we just didnt catch on quick enough)
Huckabee is associated with racism, white supremacy groups, and the Confederate flag. I Liked him, but once I found that out, it turned me off. Ron Paul is like a Satanist in my eyes. Romney is a Mormon and has been for a long time so he knew what he was getting into when he joined them. Y do i say that? B/c up until the 1970s the Mormon church didnt even ALLOW black people in their congregation. Being Black was considered a SIN to them. But of course, none of these facts or opinions will move white people. They dont care and will still vote for a candidate that has racist tendencies.
McCain is the best Republican candidate, but he’s too damn old. We need someone who wont die in the next couple years, no offense.
Hillary could win but Independents, Republicans, and some Democrats hate her. They hate her too much and think she’s shady so it’ll hurt her in the long run. She and Bill have made some disrespectful remarks, but I know their intent and its to win. They’re not racist and are looking out for the nation’s interest. But Hillary would flat-out lose against
Obama could win as well b/c unlike Hillary, he is very well liked by Democrats, Independents, and even some REPUBLICANS> He has a good chance. Unfortunately, WHITE PEOPLE LIE. This country is probably not even ready for a blk president b/c racism is now at its Peak in the 21s Century. They poll “blk” but vote “White.” And i dont want him to get assassinated. We dont need another JFK MLK-like death for our generation. Lets be honest, More people would want to kill HIM b/c he’s blk than kill BUSH b/c he’s an idiot.
So who do you choose?
Either Hillary or Obama and hopefully them working together as P and VP will be the end result b/c if you havent noticed, Bush will go down as the WORST President in United States History. These two will definitely put us back where we need to be, and even take us higher.
I hope the Republicans nominate a terrible candidate, one that will surely lose.

And what i dont get is, having to agree with someone up there, is how in the hell can we sit here and NOT impeach George Bush for pushing a corrupt and mislead war that cost thousands of innocent lives, but they can sit there and impeach Bill Clinton for getting his dick sucked? Wtf?
Tell me, who did the most damage and who’s getting away with it? Damn this govt. is so fucked up.
