POLITICAL ROUND UP: READY FOR A BLACK PRESIDENT? / CLINTON FALLS ASLEEP / NEW BUSH MOVIE? / USHER @ OBAMA RALLY?
Tuesday, January 22, 2008

According to a recent CNN poll, 72 percent of whites and 61 percent of blacks surveyed believe America is ready for a black president. Two years ago, only 65 percent of whites and 54 percent of blacks felt that way.
Both whites and blacks are concerned about the following in the same order: the economy, Iraq, terrorism, health care, gas prices and Iran.
In regard to race relations, 52 percent of black Americans say the issue will pose a problem in the United States, compared to 43 percent of whites. Fifteen years prior, though, in 1993, 55 percent of blacks and 53 percent of whites felt that way.
The survey was conducted by phone Jan. 14-17 with 1,393 adult Americans: 743 whites and 513 blacks.
If you haven’t done so already, check out the Concrete Loop 2008 Issues Poll.

STONE SETS SIGHTS ON BUSH

(Photo: Splash Images)
Hollywood director Oliver Stone is in the process of developing a script about President Bush and how he came to power. Stone hopes the film will hit theaters in time for the general election next fall.
Stone told Variety that the film will focus on how Bush was able to win the White House and will be a “true portrait” of the 43rd president.
“I’m a dramatist who is interested in people, and I have empathy for Bush as a human being, much the same as I did for Castro, Nixon, Jim Morrison, Jim Garrison and Alexander the Great,” Stone said.
“I want a fair, true portrait of the man. How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world? It’s like Frank Capra territory on one hand, but I’ll also cover the demons in his private life, his bouts with his dad and his conversion to Christianity, which explains a lot of where he is coming from. It includes his belief that God personally chose him to be president of the United States, and his coming into his own with the stunning, preemptive attack on Iraq,” he added.
Who will be playing the commander in chief? Josh Brolin, from American Gangster and more recently, No Country for Old Men.
According to Stone:
“Josh is actually better looking than Bush but has the same drive and charisma that Americans identify with Bush, who has some of that old-time movie-star swagger,” he said.
USHER TO APPEAR AT OBAMA RALLY?

(Photo: Splash Images)
CNN is reporting that R&B superstar Usher will appear with Sen. Barack Obama at a rally in Orangeburg, S.C., on Tuesday.
Usher won’t be performing; instead, he’ll speak about why he is supporting Obama.
This is not the first time Usher has spoken out in favor of Obama.
“I stand here representing our youth,” he said at a rally in Atlanta last September. “If you want change you have to get involved.”
Glad to hear that more people are getting involved in the political process. I remember hearing Usher call in to MTV’s Choose or Lose Special during the last election urging his fans to vote and letting the world know that he would be voting in his first presidential election.
Update: Usher’s dad, Usher Raymond III, died last Friday in Atlanta. No word on whether that will impact his Orangeburg visit.

I go to a predominantly white, Republican university and I overheard some people talking the other day about how if Obama becomes president the world might as well get ready for another assassination. I was totally shocked by the fact that people would kill him off even before he was elected. I mean why should assassination even be brought up in 2008 or am I being naive?

I’m ready for black president! Who cares about Bush and how he got into the White House? We all know Al Gore was suppose to win back in ‘01. It was the longest time ever taken to count the votes because is was “messed up” somehow. I’m just ready for Bush to get out of office. He did nothing but put this country in myksery, from 911 to the war in Iraq.
I’m with Usher. I want change.

@6: No you are not being naiive! I think that’s crazy! It’s funny how everyone is complaining about Bush being president and now that it’s time for an election; people are talking about assassinations instead of what could help us get out of this jam. I think it’s ridiculous…people are not trying to be serious about this and the things that’s said…WOW! That’s why when the president is elected, I could give a flying f*** about who has a problem with it cause they have a chance, right now, to make something out of this next term and they’re too busy acting an a**.
-Congrats to whomever wins!!!

He didn’t say the his name. He cited his initials…..I wanted to say “it took you more time and hot breath to remember his initials and try to get them in the right order than to actually speak Martin Luther King Jr’s name”.

I am voting based on who I think will do the most good for all people. I think that once we all start focusing on the real issues ( i.e. as the economy, the war, etc.) as much as we focus on race, the world would be a better place. And honestly I’m just sick and tired of the question, “Are we ready for a black president?”. Of course we are!! Race shouldn’t have anything to do with it. Lets focus on whether or not that individual will do an excellent job.

What upsets me about black America is that we finally have a great black candidate…and now we wanna act all critical and analyze him. I couldn’t imagine a Jewish person not voting for a Jewish candidate. In public…they may say “we will vote for the person that suits America best regardless of nationality or skin color”….but the truth is…they will vote for their own first! Why can’t black people just wake up and realize that we are black before anything else! Before God made you a boy or a girl….your parents knew 1 thing for sure…that you would be black! Stop acting brain washed and give a brotha a chance! No one else in this world gives black men a chance…and black women arent far behind…so why not vote for Barack…especially if you gave Bush a chance? Shame on you to the people that won’t give your own kind a chance! Do you think that if a Mexican person ran for office…he or she wouldn’t have the support of each and every last Mexican in America? Mexicans would show up in droves to vote for their hero!

I think it is a shame that black people are so afraid to support ourselves! Years ago, having a black president was unheard of and now we have the chance to make a difference and we’re making excuses and even putting down a man that has enough courage to stand up and do something. How do we expect to move forward as a race if we continue to let white people put us against one another? i have absolutely nothing against Hilary Clinton, but i support Obama 100%. People are talking about assasinations and all that crap. White presidents have been assasinated and that didn’t stop people voting for them. Stop thinking about the negative and think about what a positive impact this could have on our nation and the generations after us! Think about what doors this could open for African Americans and minorities as a whole. Be real people! Wake up and stop being so damned scared!!!

I will boldly say that anyone who is voting for Obama because he is black is a fool. THANK GOD Clarence Thomas isn’t running for President.
And though I am still supporting Hillary at this point, I am SOOOOOOO Glad to see someone putting some fire under Obama’s feet. I want to see if he can stand the heat, and for a while NO ONE (at least in the media) was putting him to the test. Obama, stand up and fight! Show me you can handle the job. Show me you can handle the Fox News pundits. If someone is lying about you, answer the questions and accusations instead of just saying, ” look…..that’s not true”. Show me what you are made of to change my support for Hillary.

#21 I can kinda see your point… somewhat. However we are not talking about supporting the owner of a business or something like that. we are talking about someone running our country!!! That’s a huge job. I think that it’s definitely wrong to vote soley on race. Of course I would love to see an African American run this country but i feel that you shouldn’t vote soley on race.

One more thing, I may be a little bit more seasoned than some here, but it is not that I am trying to focus on the negative as much as I am being realistic. I was around when Reagan was shot, and to think the chances of our an attempt on our President’s life will not go up if Obama is President is naive. I’m NOT saying for that reason alone he should not run, however the fact that out of all of the candidates running for President, he has had to have extra protection the longest, is NOT A COICIDENCE!

I personally am not for Obama JUST because he his Black, that is just an added bonus! i think he will make an amazing President! It’s just sad that a lot of Black people are not voting for him JUST because he is black. It seems that we as a race are putting more pressure on him more than anyone else just because he is a black man. We shouldn’t even be thinking about whether we should vote for him cause he might get assasinated. That should even come up. No one is saying that about Hilary.
To Velvet J: The fact that Obama is Running for President and still standing after a lot of his own ppl. put him down and after he has heard it will never happen and that he’s not good enough, that should be enough for you to see that he is fighting, he is standing up, he is handeling the pundits! What else do you need?

…Pres. Clinton should have had a shot of espresso before hitting the speech if he knew he was tired, because as #20 said…that is mad disrespectful. He is sitting ON STAGE!!!! DANG…I know he’s getting up in age and everything, but that was something important and it looks bad on his part!!!
interesting about the film…..i think that it will be good to watch, and oliver stone is a great director….(SPEAKING ON THE FILM TIP: did anyone else get mad when they found out that Denzel didn’t get nominated for Oscars for either of his major movies this year? That is disrespectful, and once again proof that America still doesn’t respect black people in Hollywood….which leads me to my next point…)
@ 6: I can honestly admit that there were several times in my mind that the thought of Sen. Obama being elected President meant that his life would end abruptly. I mean, we still live in a society where racism is alive…I point you to Jena, Louisiana….and I, living in Texas, know there are still certain places that I can’t go and be safe as a young African-American woman, places where the Confederate flag is still flown proudly, and black people are still called boy and girl, to their faces…I’ve witnessed it. it’s not a game or a joke or a myth.

____________________________________________________________________
Are you serious?! I watched that debate twice last nigh , and Obama did a great job defending himself. Hillary did nothing but put out a bunch of inaccurate information out and when Obama defended his positions she looked stupid. Example the whole “present vote” she tried to make it seem like he couldn’t stand up on hard issues that’s why he didn’t vote either way( yes or no). When really he was saying I would of passed the bill but there was some problems that needed to be fixed first.
Example 2 Healthcare: Clinton wants to provide healthcare for illegal immigrants (WTH). She tried to critiize Obama for not including them. I have nothing against anybody comming to America but if you are here illegally why should you get free healthcare?
Example 3 the Bankruptcy Bil: Clinton and Edwards both critizes Obama for not voting for the bill. Clinton and Edwards both agreed that 30% on a credit cardis not high (did you see Edwards face when Obama said that is too much lol). I don’t know what world Clinton and Edwards think they are in but 30% apr on a credit card is extremely high( I guess they don’t know basic math) cause Clinton wants to spend all this money but isn’t saying where it’s comming from.
You might wasnt to check out that debate one more time.

I respect everyone’s views and opinions. Running our country definitely is a huge job! So why did we let George Bush do it? Thousands of people have died as a result…thousands of our American families will never see their soldier children again.
It is so easy to set black people against each other…that’s how we got to America in the first place….our own people helped catch us so that we could go on the ships.
I don’t think that black people realize how powerful we really are…problem? The rest of the world knows how powerful we are! And they are really hoping that we don’t wake up one day and realize that! We dominate and accomplish anything we set our minds to.
So imagine what could happen if we just stuck together…
Now any black person doesn’t deserve our vote…not all black people are good to run the country. But this time…we have someone that is qualified.
Common black people…you know that when you go for a job interview…and you are up against other candidates that look like the interviewee and not like you…you are at a disadvantage. Want proof? That proof lies deep down inside of you…in your gut instinct. Other people will not tell you why they chose someone else over you (because the truth is illegal)…but they will just tell you that you weren’t ”qualified”. They would rather work with someone that could be like a buddy to them…rather than the person that is most qualified.
In business and politics….its not about who is the most qualified…its about who you feel will do what’s right for you when the time comes. Its about who do you like and who could you see being your buddy? Now this doesnt mean that’s okay….but thats just the way it works for now.
We werent desegregated to be nice…we were desegregated to lessen our power. Where did all of the black owned businesses and schools go immediately after desegregation? Down the drain! Who’s fault is it? Ours…black people…because we unconsciously thought that white was better.
Can we get some support outside of hip hop please?

Its crazy how so many people are coming down on people for supporting Hilary.. I’m sorry but as a New Yorker I am much more familiar with Hilary Clinton and her views for the direction of the country. Its like Barack just showed up last year running for president and I’m suppose to be so fickle to see a black face and here take my vote. I think Barack is a great and positive black man I am just uncertain that he is the strongest. I wish both of them the best of luck and I just pray that a democrat wins the presidency and makes some positive changes for this country.

While I don’t know the true intentions of the CL staff and their whole rhyme or reason behind how they do things, I have noticed from day one that CL highlights what is going on with Black America. This would lead me to believe that if they are covering the elections and the only Black American candidate is Barack Obama, showing his picture would fall right in line with the sites focus. There aren’t any other Black American candidates to post which is why I think only Obama was shown. Doesn’t that make sense to you? You mentioned how there were a few things about Hilary and nothing about John Edwards. I’m not sure if you know this or not but unfortunately, John Edwards (who I think may be a great guy), doesn’t appeal to most of Black America or ALL OF AMERICA for that fact. Look how he is doing in the polls. When it comes to him, there really isn’t much… to talk about!

I am a little confused with your post, Hillary is the one who initally said she would bring the trrops home in 30 days then she extended to 90 and now she saying as soon as possible. Barack was the one that said he would try to bring the troops home as soon as possible but as safely as possible so he couldn’t put a time frame on it ( which Hillary later bashed him for) she said that in plenty of times.
And all Hillary has been doing is attacking Barack, he has said nothing untill now. First people were saying he wasn’t strong enough to stand up to her and then when he dose he is “attacking her” (confused look). I know more about John Edwards stand on the issues then hers and he isn’t even a front runner.
Everytime Hillary opens her mouth she is talking bad about Bush or Obama. We know Bush sucks so why is she wasting so much time trying to tell us that. She needs to talk more about the issues.

Just because you rode in the passenger seat of a car for years doesn’t mean you have enough experience to drive it.

@49 I find that to be weird to.I think the reason why many black not found of Obama because he is mixed and he’s not black enough.Just like people say “don’t vote because he black” well don’t vote for Hilary because she is a female. And yapping about her 35 years of experience (my ass).
@46.It is what it is, an advertisement. What do you think you have to do to get an advertisement? What’s biased about that?People pay to have their ads advertise on certain sites.

LOL to Clinton! That was hilarious! It was too funny when he would wake up and start nodding like he’d been paying attention the entire time. When he was running for President and was President he sure wouldn’t have done that!
As far as Obama and Clinton are concerned, I would LOVE to see a black president or woman as pres but I don’t like either of them. I don’t agree with most of what they believe. I am one of the few black people who voted for Bush twice and I don’t regret it. I think he gets a bum wrap. The guy does something right, he gets knocked, he does something “wrong”, the mainstream press has a field day. No, I don’t agree with everything he has done (esp. with the war–his admin expected too much from the Iraq people, i.e.them helping themselves-still, if we pull out 911 will look like child’s play) but on some issues that were important to me (abortion issue, for instance), he was right on the mark. I am a Christian and that colors my viewpoint on most everything. I lean right wing, conservative for the most part.
SO….
NO one candidate is going to have ALL the answers but you have to take responsibility for educating yourself and voting based on your beliefs and values regardless of what race or sex the candidate is. The questions are “What’s important to me and which candidate’s stand falls in line with my beliefs (for the most part) and what I need to properly function as an American in this day and time?”

The question is not “Are we ready for a Black President?” but, rather, “Are we ready for change?”.
Anyone voting for Clinton over Obama on the grounds of experience - AND wanting to see a change has quite a contradiction there, in MY opinion.
Speaking of the Clintons, Bill Clinton could not have been more disrespectful. How symbolic. They are around many African Americans appearing to be being supportive, but are they really? Do they REALLY care? Not only was he nodding of but you can see him look at his watch at one point. Ugh.
#21 - We must analyze any presidential candidate, regardless of race. To automatically vote for someone based on their race alone is, to me, more ignorant than not voting at all.
Tianna - EXACTLY! There is the difference between supporting and defending. We’ll defend eachother all day, but supporting one another is a different story. I find the results of the poll to be a bit ridiculous.
#38 - Your right, we have no clue how powerful we are as a people. Similarly, young people have no clue how powerful our vote is. If we complain about nothing being done for us, perhaps we could start by voting. If we show up at the polls than politicians will do more on our behalf in order to keep that support. Its the same way in Hollywood. If we would actually go to see movies that our people put out, instead of bootlegging them, perhaps the movies will make more money and the African American actors and actresses will earn more money and gain more support from Hollywood.
#46 - CL is not the only site not posting very much about John Edwards - the same is true for ALL OF MEDIA. The focus has been on Obama across the board. All that in mind, I believe CL has done a very good job presenting un-baised posts.
Very sad to hear about Ushers Dad. They are in my prayers as well.

Obama was excellent in the debates. I’m glad to hear that we have some music artist who also gets involved in the state of our country, and just concerned about selling music.

I wish Bill and Hillary would stop the double team on Obama. It seems unfair that he is overly involved in her campaign. All he does is makes negative remarks about Obama it is a major turnoff to me, he has already been president. Does he go after Edwards with the same aggression?

Im sorry but I dont believe Obama is really going to be able to make a big change in America. And come on people a supposedly black man being president, some hater out their is gone try their hardest to assasinate that man. I have alot more to learn about politics and just life in general, but as far as I can see I think Hillary should be our newest president. It about more than color to me, I think it would be the bomb if a black woman (maybe Obamas wife) would win president. First of all it would be someone black and it would be a woman. We never had either of those in office.

No I don’t think that you are being naive. I think that we live and perpetuate a state of “fear.” I am not scared in the least bit. i am just one of those people who believe that fear is the number one reason why people don’t even try in life. We can NEVER and I do mean never, create any type of change without conflict. If you are doing something and it’s easy and no one is objecting, then you must not be making a big enough statement. Those people at your school are ignorant and they should be excused. They hear things that make them actually believe that the country is like that. And even though there is alot of racism in our nation, they don’t have a choice. Obama is the best candidate. and regardless of that if and when Obama is elected the 44th president, that doesn’t mean that people are NOT racist? People have Black friends and they are still racist. So it is not to say that people won’t vote for Obama because they are racist, they will. You want to know why? Because most racist people don’t even know that they are racist. When you tell them, they are shocked. Furthermore, race has been transcended in this case. Obama is NO Al Sharpton people. Sharpton was running for the Black President, and that will never happen in a democracy where the majority of the people are WHITE! Obama however appeals to all people. That is the difference. You can not look at race alone as a determining factor. You must look at all these things. Sure some people will NOT vote for him because he is Black. Sure. And some people will vote for him BECAUSE he is Black.
He will win, don’t be scared for him.

@60: “We must analyze any presidential candidate, regardless of race. To automatically vote for someone based on their race alone is, to me, more ignorant than not voting at all.”
So is it equally as ignorant to vote for someone based on their gender?
I am still trying to understand the bias against people who say they will vote for Obama because he’s black, while I’ve heard no criticism of the women who say they will vote for Hillary simply because she is a woman. Even the black women who say they will vote for Hillary b/c she’s a woman receive no criticism, but if that same black woman says she’s voting for Barack…immediately she’s demonized.
I really don’t believe all of the support Hillary is receiving from caucasian women is based simply on her stance on the issues, her “experience”, or her record. They want a female President. Period.
BTW, I’m not advocating voting based on race or gender, I’m just trying to get to the bottom of this perceived bias.

Okay I don’t want to argue and debate but if you have been really paying attention she has said a lot worst. It is obvious to everybody reporters/politicians ect that he is running against both of them. And they both have been attacking him just like she got Bob Johnson and the rest of them to attack him, he has a right to defend himself.
To whoever was asking about Edwards it’s not the media’s fault that aint nobody talking about him as much as his rivals. The media will always pick people who they think have a chance at getting the nomination that’s the way it works. Edwards shouldn’t be mad at anybody for not noticing him he needs to say or do something else to show he is a contender.

@TXAGGIE yeah you’re naive. of course obama will have to heighten security when he becomes president b/c i wouldnt be surprised if someone tried to assassinate him. same with hilary if she becomes president. even when bush started messing things up, my friends and i were waiting to hear that he got assassinated. even though that didn’t happen, i wouldn’t have been surprised if it did. there are some CRAZY ppl out there
