POLITICAL ROUND UP: SIMMONS, CHOPRA, & CHAVIS WANT ANSWERS / HUCKABEE COMMENT TAKES HEAT / HUNTER DROPS OUT

Sunday, January 20, 2008

(Photos: Splash Images)

Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, self-help guru Deepak Chopra and civil rights leader Benjamin Chavis want answers from our Presidential hopefuls.

The trio sent an open letter to the (then) eleven Democratic and Republican candidates still in the race for nomination asking them six questions on issues ranging from diversity to the environment, reducing poverty in America and ending the war in Iraq.

The letter promises to post whatever answers they receive on the internet. I wonder if they forgot about Mike Gravel (Democrat) and Alan Keyes (Republican).

HUCKABEE COMMENT TAKES HEAT

(Photo: 4President)

Presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee is taking heat from members of the gay community over recent comments he made during an interview with beliefnet.com.

When asked:
“Is it your goal to bring the Constitution into strict conformity with the Bible? Some people would consider that a kind of dangerous undertaking, particularly given the variety of biblical interpretations.”

Huckabee replied:

“Well, I don’t think that’s a radical view to say we’re going to affirm marriage. I think the radical view is to say that we’re going to change the definition of marriage so that it can mean two men, two women, a man and three women, a man and a child, a man and animal. Again, once we change the definition, the door is open to change it again. I think the radical position is to make a change in what’s been historic.”

This is not Huckabee’s first time under fire for comments on homosexuality. In Kids Who Kill, his 1998 book which examines causes of the increase of juvenile violence in the nation, he acquainted homosexuality with illicit behavior.

“It is now difficult to keep track of the vast array of publicly endorsed and institutionally supported aberrations — from homosexuality and pedophilia to sadomasochism and necrophilia,” he wrote.

According to Huckabee’s campaign, he is merely saying that he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman.

DUNCAN HUNTER DROPS OUT

(Photo: HOI)

California Rep. Duncan Hunter, ended his bid for the White House Saturday night.

According to a media alert from his campaign’s website:

Today we end this campaign. The Nevada caucuses reflecting only 2% of the vote for me. I ran the campaign exactly the way I wanted to, and at this point not being able to gain traction in conservative states of Nevada and South Carolina, it’s time to allow our volunteers and supporters to focus on the campaigns that remain viable.

With only a little more than a million dollars, making it the least financed Republican campaign, Hunter’s campaign never really got off the ground. He adds:

The failure of our campaign to gain traction is mine and mine alone. But we have driven the issues of national security, the border fence, the emergence of China and the need to reverse bad trade policy. Because of that, this campaign has been very worthwhile, and for the Hunter family, a lot of fun.

Both sides are wrong.

Religious zealots should learn to read the job description.

Homosexuals should comprehend the civil concept of marriage.

This thread is proof that religion incubates stupidity. And blacks are its greatest casualties.

I’m surprised at how convenient Christianity has become for some people these days…you get to pick and choose which tenets to live by…it’s almost as if religion can be customized to be “one size fits all”…

D. Lani, the story in the Bible that you are referring to Sodom and Gomorrah, and there are varying views as to why the city was destroyed. The reasons range from inhospitality of new guests in the city to sexual immorality (which includes PROMISCUITY, BEASTIALITY, RAPE, and ADULTERY). All of these things occur today, especially promiscuity, so if you are really concerned with the U.S. being destroyed, perhaps we should be campaigning for monogamy and faithfulness first.

Before we all go around condemning others for something that, in all honesty, is NONE OF OUR BUSINESS, how about we take a look at our own lives. Are you living “free of sin?” It’s like my grandmother used to say: Sweep around your own front door before you sweep around mine.

D.Lani, it seems like you are simply regurgitating what you’ve been told by your pastor and what you’ve read in the Bible, but none of us were present when the Bible was written by humans, (men), so we really don’t know anything with absolute certainty.

trying to conform to what HUMANS wrote thousdands of years ago is HILARIOUS,

Although nature does provide the obvious evidence that men and women belong together, based on their biological differences and connections, it still bothers me to hear someone actually compare Homosexuality to bestiality. What ignorance…

So many hypocritical people on this site, justifying the bible as accurate, something that was written centuries ago. I believe in biblical errancy. They try to justify that the authors of the many books in the bible were inspired by God as they wrote those books. And yet they still commit so many sins but point their fingers at others. Humans are sick.

But did anyone stop to think that the bible’s authors were biased toward many of the issues they talked about. Meaning we’re only getting once side of the story.

You have to remember, MAN wrote the bible. Maybe inspired by God b/c there is indeed great wisdom in the bible and i believe in some parts, but some things just dont sit right with me.

I dont allow religion to hold me down b/c Religion is MAN-made. I consider myself a spiritual person.

But on that note, i do think this country might need a spiritual boost simply b/c our morality is so depressing at this time

MY P.O.V. I’m sorry if I wrote it confusingly, but God speaking through the writers shows up in the bible numerous of times…(John 10:35, Acts 4:24) e.t.c. I don’t just listen to the pastor and take “his word” for it. I do my research. But what I meant was that I think I remembered him saying that they would be punished if they were to change the word.

S. THanks the story was slipping my mind!! And you’re right the cities were filled with a whole bunch of different types of sin.. I’m not campaigning for anything, I don’t believe Huckabee or just any one person can change the way America is headed without a much needed miracle, I just wanted to give my views on how America is looking today.

I’m not even saying that this country should align jointly with the bible because like stated before, its way too old. God doesn’t expect for us to stay in the same time frame from thousands of years ago, thats impossible. There were changes in the bible (i.e Old/New testament) and there’s obviously going to be changes now. I believe that we just need to keep up the morals from the bible.

Like I said before I don’t judge ANYBODY I leave that up to God. We all sin thats a given, so none of us has the place to judge.

D.Lani, I think I understood what you were saying, but my point was that we cannot know for sure what happened or didn’t happen, even though it’s in the Bible, we (as human beings) have no way of knowing that it’s true. I’m just saying for myself, I have more belief that there is a higher power, a spiritual being that exists (God). But, I do not believe in the idea that only one particular religious ideology or text can provide the only source of “truth” about life and what we should believe.

But I guess you ignore those things to further your cause. ‘You can’t please anybody’… Ultimate death. And that’s your excuse for a politician, who is supposed to be one to make the world a better place for everybody? Get outta here…

PLEASE MARRIAGE ISNT WORSE THAN IT USED TO BE!!!!!!! This is the first time in history where people can marry who they want to, when they want to, even interracially it’s easier to marry the one you love that doesn’t look like you. Back then it was nearly IMPOSSIBLE to divorce, doesn’t mean the atmosphere was better, no. It’s just that women were stuck cause they had no money, so how could she leave with 5 children to raise by herself, bills to pay and no job? Not to mention a divorced woman was tagged NO GOOD cause she “couldn’t keep a man”. Then even when men wanted to divorce there was this whole society pressure, reputation even at his job. But they could have all the mistresses they wanted and get away with it because their women wives HERE TO STAY, had no other choice. The high rate of divorce is because people now have the possibility to get out of a toxic relationship. People used to be STUCK for 30 years and most times with people THEY DID NOT LOVE cause the family had arranged the marriage for ECONOMIC REASONS. And don’t get me started on 12 year old girls who were married to 40 year old men, and it still happens in many countries. In Africa, in India, in Arabic Countries and East Asia, in Russia, ARRANGED MARRIAGE is the most common type of marriage and that’s why they LAST more than in developped countries, women have no possibility of leaving even when they’re beaten up, men don’t really have the option to leave either but they don’t care cause they easily get away with having multiple mistresses.

I’d rather be in a country where I can divorce and be at peace than stay stuck in a marriage with someone that I don’t love and who doesn’t love me either.

Marriage wasn’t MORE SACRED back in the day. On one hand it doesn’t last as long as it used to, but on the other hand it has MORE MEANING than it used to cause people get more and more married out of LOVE and LOVE only.

Lullaby: Yes! I was just about to speak on that! Being with someone you don’t love but are stuck with because as a woman you’re supposed to stay at home and look out for the kids, despite of what you feel? That equals as a sacred thing back in the day? To me it doesn’t.

That still doesn’t mean people today should go marrying people just like that though. Just have a relationship if anything. Marry when you’ve been in a relationship for years and are sure that you want to be with that person for a while, not just a coupla months or weeks even. Unless you wanna spend all that green on a lot of ‘perfect’ weddings lol.

And on the gay marriage thing… Everyone should be able to.

@my POV # 64

Sorry I didnt respond earlier but I went to sleep shotly after posting….

Anyhoo…..

let me address some of your comments: Yes Homosexuality and wide variety of other sins were around before the bible was writen as we know it now. What does that mean? That every sin that ocured before the bibe was writen is allowed because GOD did not decree it a sin? What was the relevance of that fact/statement?

Actually I will go one step further. Give me one religion just one that actually condones homosexuality, or even turns a blind eye to it, one religion or spiritual teching that says it is okay for two consenting adults of the same sex to become sexually intimate.

I BET YOU CANNOT.

Yet when people such as myself give all kinds of biblical spiritual and documented reference to prove (in our minds and beliefs) that homosexuality is wrong, you all claim we are crazy based on the evidence we give.

Why do you do that? GOD speaks to us (we believe) through our teachings. Who or what force is speaking to you to tell you that you can sleep with who you want or when you want because you simply get a “feeling” or ‘desire”. Many people have very sordid illicit and “wrong” impulses and hve to control them, that is sin trying to define and influence them.

And finally….. YES I did have premarital sex. For which I have asked GOD to forgive me. Are you one of those ignorant people who think that because I committed the sin of premarital sex and there are many continuing to do so, that means we should continue to do so and that all other sins are justified? How broad sworded and defiant of our GOD’S laws!

To #89 Nova:

Yes, homosexuality existed before man introduced their selfwritten Bibles/Al-Qur’ans/Torahs/Tanakhs influenced by a hypnagogic experience (in other words, the voices heard in their dreams) to the world.

And yes, pretty much everyone of those man written books condone homosexuality as something that pretty much sends you right down to ‘hell’.

Yes, you are referencing to bilical documents written by men and their human ideas and beliefs, opinions. Not god’s, in my eyes. Has it ever crossed your mind that their god might as well be the voice they heard in a dream? Or what men from the past considered as their own ‘logic’, ‘common sense’ or way of thinking? Have you ever experienced a hypnagogic experience? I’ve heard so many people claiming they have heard god speaking to them, when in reality it was a hypnagogic experience. Look it up on wikipedia. Please do so. I’m not claiming your crazy, if that’s what you believe in. I don’t. I respect your perspective, so please respect mine.

The force speaking to me, as i said, is logic and common sense. Just because I don’t believe in god does not mean I’m a ’sinner’, it doesn’t mean I’m a bad person. I do many things to help my fellow human beings and bring joy and happiness just like anyone else. Will I go to hell because of that?

94.

simon

Monday, January 21, 2008 /

Homosexuality is a bond between two of the same species with the same level of thinking.
Homosexuality is a bond between two adults who have enough knowledge and common sense to know what love is about, not a child who’s young and learning about it.
Homsexuality is a bond between two beings involving reciprocal feelings, not a living being and a deceased being.

Then, HOW can anyone compare homosexuality to bestiality, pedophilia or necrophilia? Religion, science, power and money will spawn revolution and suffering, and in turn might cause the end of the world.

Dear VINA @ 93

I fully understand you and completely agree with your sensibilities. My opinions are all embedded in my faith and what I believe. The truth is. I believe in a GOD who sent HIS son JESUS to die for all of mankind’s sins. I believe that HE walked on water when HE was on earth. These things by definition are hard for some people to realize. But here is the thing. Many people (and my whole argument lies with these people specifically) who believe in one GOD and the bible MUST KNOW that homosexuality is wrong. It is written in the same bible they believe in.

As for people (like yourself I assume) who discredit the bible. Or at least have “issues” with its legitamacy. Meditate/Pray/focus on nothingness become one with yourself and free your mind of thought, and in that absolute silence and serene calm, allow your conciousness speak to you. And in that find the answers and I guarantee you that no matter what you call it whether “hypnogogic” a “trance like state” etc etc, the GOD I believe in or the greater force than ourselves will reveal some form of HIMSELF to you and the truth will be revealed.

America is a very young country. If we are to believe what has been documented. Christopher Columbus and that whole fabrication. America became “civilized” only 500 - 600 years ago (or somthing like that), so this is a very “brave new world” so to speak. So a lot of the social developments like a black president, woman president are not milestones anywhere else around the world, it is that us as America is finally shaking its own inbred bigoted view of things. I have heard of some blacks voting for Obama simply because he is black. How ignorant! It should be about good leadership, not colour of skin. I say all that to say that many people align themselves with Bush, bcause of his religious point of view, and embedded in that is that he absolutely despises gays (wrong I know) but his point of view nevertheless.

I respect everyone who wants to revolve their whole life around a man who COULD have suffered a hypnagogic experience and 2000 years later happens to have millions of followers following his HUMAN ideas and ideals… But I and many others don’t. So do NOT mix your beliefs and religion with the law.

@ NOVA:

I thought I would have to post a long response, but I see that Christoper, Vina and Simon have said pretty much everything I would have set, so there’s no use in repeating it.

As for your wondering whether or not I’m ignorant (which, coming from a so-called peace-loving Christian, I would think that you could come up with a more constructive response than that), I think that ignorance may lie in blindly believing in an ideology when you have no concrete proof of its absolute truth, or never considering that there are other possibilities that may contradict what you have been taught to believe. I respect your beliefs (even though I don’t agree with them), and I don’t mean to offend you so if I have, then I apologize. We can just agree to disagree, agreed? :)

Thanks once again for including politics on your website. “We” need to get more involved in the political arena. So many of our folks dismiss politics as “My vote doesn’t county anway.” That’s a crock. Even if one only voted in the local elections, it’s mandatory to do so. So many local elections are swayed by a few hundred, or thousand votes. These elected officials have alot to do with how your daily life is conducted.
Anyone black person who thinks that our future civil rights are not tied to others as it relates to gays, women, latins, asians, poor whites and others, had better wakeup. In this country (and world, for that matter) is more about race, than class.
Huckabee would have us go back to the 50s and beyond where the only people who had obvious rights were white males, period.

It seems as if a lot of people are asking the question “I”m a good person, I do good things, I help people e.t.c yet I don’t believe in God, or I’m not a christian so does that mean I’m going to hell?” And I’m not trying to “send anyone to hell” but Unfortunately, people think that because they have a good and sincere heart, that that is good enough to escape God’s judgement, but it isn’t. So to answer the questions its unfortunate but, according to my religion (christianity) yes you will still go to hell.

But like I said before I don’t force my religion on anybody, its not something that God wants us to do. You have your own choice. And thats where many christians go wrong, unfortunately giving a bad name for the rest of us (to an extent Huckabee).

I was simply answering that because they asked. Sorry if you are taking offense, because I don’t mean too offend anybody. I didn’t make up that idea, and if it was up to me everyone would go to heaven lol..

If you don’t believe in what I believe in then thats PERFECTLY fine with me.. I don’t look down on anybody who doesn’t believe in it. I’m so up for agreeing to disagree.. It’s quite ironic how those that do not believe in faith or religion can be so quick to reject the belief systems of over 3 billion people by referring to it in such a demeaning and degrading way. Isn’t this what you claim people of the faith do? Where is the respect and tolerance for people of the book? All I hear is how Christians do this or Christians say that, Christians are hypocrites, Christians are not better than anyone else. Well, before you point a finger, watch your thumb that will point back at you.

Many Christians and other people of faith are not perfect, last time I checked no one is, and they do show respect and tolerance for all faiths, even those who don’t believe in anything. Many Christians do not proselytize, but simply share their faith through their actions or if asked. Many Christians open up their homes and do show love toward people the best way they know how. As do many Muslims and Jews whose holy book does not agree with homosexuality either. If you did not know this you can read the tanakh and the surahs of the qu’ran, or simply look at the penalties for homosexuality in Islamic countries under sharia law.

I say all of this to say that you can respectfully disagree with homosexuality and still show respect and love and kindness to all people.

Jesus God, some days I flat out get tired of being black.

Here you ignoramuses are, spewing homophobic rhetoric, and quoting Huuckabee to support it. Do you not know that Huckabee is a card-carrying white supremacist who just two or three days ago was down in South Carolina courting racist white evangelicals who hate queers, but hate your dumb black asses more?

Giving them a thumbs-up for keeping the confederate flag hanging over the capitol, he said, ” “If somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we’d tell them what to do with the pole. That’s what we’d do.”

That pole sounds a lot like the broken broomstick a white New York cop shoved up the anus of Abner Louima, damn near killing him a few years ago. You may not remember Louima, but I guarantee you the Council of Conservative Citizens, the largest white supremacist group in the contry do. And Huckabee has been in bed with them for at least the past 15 years. In 1993, his speech was the highlight of their annual conference.

The Council of Conservative Citizens descended from the White Citizens Councils, the lynchers and rapists who fought integration all over the south, including Arkansas’ Little Rock High School.

Google the Council of Conservative Citizens and read their statement of principles. They say outright that they “oppose all efforts to mix the races of mankind, to promote non-white races over the European-American people through so-called ‘affirmative action’ and similar measures, to destroy or denigrate the European-American heritage, including the heritage of the Southern people, and to force the integration of the races.”

if i’m not mistaken:

it is christian to separate church and state. 1. Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s, and 2. there was a point at which citizens attempted to crown Jesus as their king, and he refused. if you truly believe your god is all-powerful, don’t try to get your country to work on his behalf. he absolutely does not need your elected official to accomplish what he sees necessary.

thus, keep your religious belief of marriage as between one man and one woman in your church where you found it. in that forum, it is also okay to liken homosexuality to having sex with animals and dead people. a democratic nation is not the place for that.

also, the constitution does not define marriage as between one man and one woman. thus our president’s recent attempt at putting that in there. different states have different laws governing marriage and who may take part with whom.

governor huckabee wants to INFLICT his PERSONAL views on an entire country that doesn’t 100% agree with him. whether he admits this or not, such is the case.

please understand that this does not condemn or endorse christianity or homosexuality, but states that the two are unrelated and in a political atmosphere need not be mixed. there is someone who believes the opposite of you, and their belief is as valid as yours. leave them alone and vote for what affects YOU.
