POLITICS: BET FOUNDER SLAMS OBAMA
Sunday, January 13, 2008

BET founder and Hillary Clinton supporter Bob Johnson, said Sunday he is “insulted” with the Obama campaign’s latest criticism of Clinton and appeared to take aim at the Illinois senator for his admitted drug use as a young man.
“As an African American, I’m frankly insulted that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Bill and Hillary Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues when Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood that I won’t say what he was doing but he said it in his book,” Johnson said while campaigning with Clinton in Columbia, South Carolina.
Moments later, he added: “That kind of campaign behavior does not resonate with me, for a guy who says, ‘I want to be a reasonable, likable, Sidney Poitier ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.’ And I’m thinking, I’m thinking to myself, this ain’t a movie, Sidney. This is real life.”
At a rally for Clinton at Columbia College, Mr. Johnson was defending recent comments that Mrs. Clinton made regarding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She did not mean to take any credit away from him, Mr. Johnson said, when she said that it took President Johnson to sign the civil rights legislation he fought for.
Dr. King had led a “moral crusade,” Mr. Johnson said, but such crusades have to be “written into law.”
“That is the way the legislative process works in this nation and that takes political leadership,” he said. “That’s all Hillary was saying.”
In a statement released by Obama’s campaign Sunday afternoon, former South Carolina State Rep. “I.S.” Leevy Johnson, an Obama supporter, said he was offended Clinton did not condemn Johnson’s comments.
“It’s offensive that Senator Clinton literally stood by and said nothing as another one of her campaign’s top supporters launched a personal, divisive attack on Barack Obama,” he said. “For someone who decries the politics of personal destruction, she should’ve immediately denounced these attacks on the spot.”
Clinton’s campaign says Johnson was not referring to Obama’s past drug use, but rather his career as an organizer and state legislator. Meanwhile, Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, another African-American supporter of Clinton, said of the comments, “Sometimes people say things that aren’t sanctioned … I can’t speak for Bob.”
Later Sunday, Johnson maintained the comments were not in reference to Obama’s drug use: “My comments today were referring to Barack Obama’s time spent as a community organizer, and nothing else,” he said in an issued statement. “Any other suggestion is simply irresponsible and incorrect.”
In Obama’s 1995 book Dreams of My Father — a book that was little read at the time, but recently reprinted — the future presidential candidate writes he was once headed in the direction of a “junkie” and a “pothead.”
Referring to his emotional struggles as a young man, Obama writes, “Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it. Not smack, though.”
Last month, Clinton New Hampshire co-chairman Bill Shaheen resigned his post after suggesting Republicans would likely raise the issue in a general election.
“The Republicans are not going to give up without a fight … and one of the things they’re certainly going to jump on is his drug use,” Shaheen said then. “It’ll be, ‘When was the last time? Did you ever give drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?’”
Both campaigns are locked in a heated back and forth over recent remarks from the New York Democrat and her husband that have touched off concerns among some African-American voters. Clinton has alleged Obama’s campaign is distorting the remarks — an accusation Obama has called “ludicrous.”

To Huh, first I really don’t think You deserve a reply, but listen up. You have the right to vote for who ever you please, and for what ever reason you choose. Those of us who support Obama have the right for what ever reason they choose to vote for him. I have read some of your rants and either you are a paid Hillary blogger, or you are just plain menopausal, or crazy at this time of the month. I feel your pain. I’ll love you anyway, that is what Obama is trying to do, bring everyone together, so give your self a hug. Embrace change, no matter how hard it hurts, change is hard. I realize that everyone can’t deal with change.

#huh, good for you. I just heard MSNBC Keith Olbermann stated that some of the things Hillary stated on Meet the Press, was fact checked by the New york times today and she was wrong.
the sad thing about that is how many people actually read, and fact check candidates. We just take politicians at their word, and usually their words are a lie, or at most muttered.

I hope he didnt’t think he hurt the OBAMA campaign with is IGNORANCE. He only dug the hole deeper and wider for Hillary Clinton .

Obama is for postpartum abortion. AKA killing live babies 24 hours after birth
“When you get right down to it,” the Illinois Senator said before an audience at the recent Stem Cells R Us Annual Convention, “What difference does two or three minutes inside or outside the womb really make? One’s ‘late-term’ and the other’s ‘postpartum.’ Who’s to say if the postpartum fetus is truly viable? Postpartum fetuses die all the time for all manner of reasons…”

#huh, I really see you have issues. I googled Postpartum Abortion, and quess where it took me to the “conservative Choice ” newsletter. How much confidence can you give this paper. I attempted to google stem cell r s annual convention and there was no finding. I quess the conservatives will begin to LIE and SWIFT boat obama within their own party now, just in case obama gets the Nod.
People this is going to be nasty. FACT CHECK EVERY RUMOR. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Don’t depend on the media and Right Wings conservatives for your answers.

The comments by Bob Johnson don’t surprise me at all. You know its funny that every black supporter Hilary Clinton has are the people who profit unmercifully on the black community. From Bob Johnson’s “caricature” of a black television station to Magic Johnson’s “enter at your own risk” movie theaters and tgi.fridays. Neither of them care.
Obama has my vote and I sincerely hope that he infuses some of Ron Paul’s ideologies into his office. Ron Paul would be the candidate of choice, he would like to dismantle the three organizations that have been to the most detriment to black communities not only in America but worldwide. The CIA, IRS and the FBI….. he just can’t win due to a media blackout.

Obama: Stand Up Against People Peddling Bad Info
Email
Share January 14, 2008 6:54 PM
ABC News’ David Wright, Andy Fies and Sunlen Miller Report: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., held a hastily called press conference in Reno, Nevada on Monday because he was “a little concerned about the tenor the campaign has taken in the last couple of days.”
The Democratic presidential candidate made clear that he wants to stay above the fray with the back and forth between the candidates, “I don’t want the campaign in this stage to degenerate into so much tit for tat back and forth that we loose sight why all of us are doing this.”
Obama spoke about his Democratic opponents in a favorable light, “And you know I think over the last couple of days you’ve seen a tone on the democratic side of the campaign that is unfortunate and what I want to do is stipulate a couple of things, I think that I may disagree with Sen. Clinton or Sen. Edwards on how to get things on how to get there but we share the same goals, we’re all democrats , we all believe in civil rights, we all believe in equal rights. We all believe that regardless of race or gender that people should have equal opportunities, I think they’re good people, they are patriots and they are running because they think they can lead this country to a better place.”
The Senator put out a semi-challenge to other candidates to stand up against people (even supporters/surrogates) that peddling misleading information, “If I hear my own supporters engaging in talk that I think is ungenerous or misleading or in some way is unfair then I will speak out forcefully against them and I hope the other campaigns take the same approach. We’ve got too much at stake at this time in our history to be engaging in this kind of silliness and you know I suspect that other candidates may feel the same way.
Obama, just six days away from the Nevada caucus, still had to field questions from his devastating New Hampshire loss, after most polls had him winning by a wide margin, “that didn’t quite work out the way everybody thought, so if I ever put any stock in polls, that ended it.”
When asked if the loss in NH was due to the suggestion that perhaps white American and Hispanic America is not ready to elect a black president, Obama dismissed the notion, ” I don’t’ think that’s what was going on….as I understand it, basically there was a big shift in undecided’s going towards Sen Clinton, particularly among women in the last minute. And keep in mind there was a big gap, a gender gap that cut both ways - I won among men and she won among women -there were more men than women who voted. If it had been a racial issue, there’s no reason why that would have been something that was unique to women as opposed to men, so I don’t’ think that is the case.”

The one thing that I like about this election (which has been mentioned before) is that the way America determines the president, who will decide their way of life, has been finally challenged. The way of thinking about the political process has been challenged. We have now been forced to think outside of the box which is what we shouldv’e been doing in the first place!

To MOTHER (above): To date, not one, but four African Americans have served as United States senators. In 1870, Hiram Revels of Mississippi became the first African American senator. Five years later, Blanche K. Bruce , also of Mississippi, became the second. In 1967, Edward Brooke of Massachusetts , and in 1993, Carol Moseley- Braun.
Last night, Obama and Hilliary each made conciliatory statements aimed at ratcheting down the rhetoric. They know, as discriminating news junkies do, that there is little difference in their positions on race and gender. Obama even spoke of the Clinton’s long history of being “on the right side of civil rights issues.”
This dust up over M.L. King is a tempest in a teapot and is playing right into Republican hands. Al Sharpton had it right: they’re not running to fill Martin Luther King’s shoes, they’re running to fill Lyndon Johnson’s, meaning what do they specifically propose to address race and gender issues in this country. Where is their Great Society?
Many of you have posted well written, thoughtful comments above. The problem is you’ve based much of what you’ve said on inaccurate news accounts. If you didn’t hear a candidate say something, and you don’t know the context, find other accounts and compare. So-called legitimate news outlets like MSNBC, CNN, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post blur the lines between news and opinion almost as often now as that disgraceful FoxNews.
Almost every slap against Clinton mentioned above is based on half-truths, inaccurate or out of context quotes, or slanted stories. Young people, learn to identify biased reporting whether it comes from the left or the right. Seek out trustworthy journalists like John Riddley of NPR. Google him, and see what this principled young Black man writes.
Tonight, watch the democratic debate for yourself. And listen to the news jockies when its over, and you’ll wonder if they were listening to what you were.
Right now I’m listening to Morning Joe on MSNBC. Joe keeps referring to the “race war” going on in the democratic campaign. What “race war?” They say it often enough, and the public gets duped.
Obama isn’t a coke fiend, and Hilliary isn’t a racist. But neither has outlined specific policies that address the kind of systemic change that prevents a future Jena Six, or lifts the poorest Americans - single Black mothers - out of poverty. Which one has a plan to get our families back in homes in the Lower Nine in New Orleans?
These are the kinds of things that oughta be raised by Black news outlets on the internet. Google them and you’ll find comment after comment on Zahara Jolie-Pitt’s hair, but nothing about her daddy’s phenominal Make It Right Project.
Folks, these are serious times. Enough of the bullshit semantics skirmishes. We got real problems that require real solutions. Let’s not get rope-a-doped by rhetoric as we have in the past.

What about Whitewater! and the other scandals during the Clinton administration. This is how they do it, they instigate another black to diss another black because we love to do that and I bet she did’nt have to pay him or make any promises to him to get him to do it. A crying shame. He has probably smoked weed and everything else, at least Obama admitted it and took responsibility for it. No one had to bring him out about it, and it was back in the day. What about Clinton claiming “I didn’t inhale”, come on now! Hypocrites, Hillary Clinton should be ashamed to let this clown speak on her behalf.

I stand corrected but what I meant was is that as a US Senator whether he is fifth or six, living in t his country and being a black man or boy I ma quite sure he has heard more than once what he was incapable of doing. I still applaud these young people, they not dummies and they have instincts and the most part street sense.
I am not going to speak about Mr.Obama, because I think he is a stand up kind of guy he is real. But I will say Hillary may not be a racis???, but what she has demonstrated to me is that she is a manipulator, shelf serving, even in looking at this picture in my spirit she does not look like the first lady of this country. She keeps talking about experience well someone expecienced in values and integrity sould have shut him up and I believe she was aware of what was going to be said because as they so clearly eluded to last night she and Bob Johnson are very close friends and it would be difficult for her to separate herself from, since you say she is so smart, I agree so that means she is no fool and she is well aware of what she is doing.
By the way I voted for the Clintosn twice and not again, you all can talk until you a blue in the face I have an eight year old grandsone who goes to a very good school and just last week he was told by one of his classmates that his dad said the black people could not run this country because they are not smart enough, and the child said it to my grandson who has skipped 2nd grade and is 8 in the fourth grade, and the school is one of the finest in Fairfax, Va, my oldest son has a PHD and works at the Pentagon in Washington so we are not fools, okay. We know how to make sound decisions and if we don’t we know how to pray and ask God for wisdom. Another thing when my daughter law left that principles office the next day she left with document which insured 50% discount for his next years tuition, and they promised he would never hear that again from any child or student or they would be dismissed.
It’s time for the young-uns to make their own decisions and I applaud and encourage them the legens have had their time.
By the way if you respond back, I will not answer. I have really had enough of Hillary and Bill. They both have been wrong and insulting and very condescending and just plain out and out disrespectful to another man. I would not want anyone to treat my sons or granson that way and if they did i would loose respect for the.
I have decide after this to concede with Mr. Obamas wishes in statement here and not go tit for tat. Thank you.
I am going to use my time volunteering at his headquarters.Encouraging our youth and anyone else who wants to get on board.

Who is it that watched Bobby Jones for nearly 30 years. Black folks.
Who is it that watches Keisha Cole show? Black folks.
Who is it that has the audience filled on 106 and Park. Black folks.
I personally believe he messing with Keisha Cole or her mama because Bob Johnson trashy enough to do so.
It’s black folk that has kept them on the air, not Hillary or his crowd and he got the nerve to dis a grown black man, on the streets he would have gotten his you know what kicked, and he dissed him in front on on the behalf of a white woman.
Bill and Hillary must have promised him a kennedy honor and standing dinner invitations at the white hous when they are re-elected.
I agree with what some one previously said there should be a law against a woman running when her husband has once been president.
This is nothing but political sabotage and I would be too afraid to give them this much power, she is a fool already.

I think exactly what the Clinton’s wanted to happen is happening. When he started calling her out on her experience and calling her out on some other lies she has told that is when this story came up. When he started getting endorsements from big time unions and other top notch politicians this mess comes up.
Don’t fall for this. Black people stop thinking you owe the Clinton’s anything. Bill Clinton was the president of America. He did not do anything that he wasn’t suppose to do. It is a privileage for any politician to get our vote not a privileage for us to vote for them. Also, it is Hilary running not Bill and I think everyone keeps getting that confused.
We have to start taking responsibility for our communities and work with politicians. We also have to let them know what we expect for our votes. I find it really strange that the 50 and under african-americans are all for Obama, but, the people of the baby boom era is attacking him. I think that all of these black politicians that are doing this to him better remember that they too will run again. I think true character is beginning to show.
Let us keep the issues at the forefront of this election and lets not get caught up in this mess. I don’t think for one second that this is about the black vote. I think that this is about the white vote. I do believe that they expected Obama to get some of the black vote and even some of the hispanic vote, but, I don’t think they expected so any white people to go with him. That is what scares them. And, I do believe if they had to do a recount in New Hampshire that that would change.
Wake black America and move to the future. It is okay we can vote for Mr.Obama he is a good candidate.

He is a good candidate. I showed my grandmother this post with the pic and she said Hillary looks like a ___ fool and she said she must be loosing her mind.
My grandmother is 78 years young with good mental faculties, and in good health she taught school for nearly 40 years.
She sat me down and talked to me seriously she said baby you young people need to know this is your time she said yes I voted for the Clintons bothe times but she said that was another time, she said you we are not to look back she said the bible says remember Lots wife, she said I am not voting for the Clintons again because I have gone to the Lord and she said the spirit of the Lord has told me don’t go back, she said its time to move forward, she said the decision you young people make will effect you and the next generation.
She said I am going to pray for Mr. Obama and his family but she sid I feel so strongly in my heart that this is a chance for you young people to make history, she said and you can do this.
She said he was loose Iowa and she said people telling you all he lost NH she said pay attention to the delegates Obama has 9 delegates and Hillary has 9 delegates, she said you all can do this, she said yes you can she said this is your future on the line.
She said if his running did not mean anything thing Hillary and Bill would not be so nasty towards him she said if the Lord see fits that I live I am going to vote for this young man, she then said I am so surprised at Hillary she is acting like an alley woman not a woman who could possibly run this country.
She said the church has to really pray and she said that is probably the only time she set foot in a black church just to get votes,

Yes, we should boycott BET.
No one seemed to mention the fact that when Oprah and others stood to speak on Obamas behalf they did not mention anyone’s name they spoke with class and style, I was impressed. Oprah did not trash anyone she eloquently said why she was endorsing Obama and Kerry was short and to the point as well as the Gov. of Nevada, maybe that’s what made Hillary angry because this Gov. said she wrestled with whom to endorse but she had to go with Obama because its time for a new whitehouse, its time for change.
I still don’t understand why Hillary would do this and Mr. Johnson would disrespect a black man this way in front of and with a white woman, maybe its because he has money and has forgotten the struggle.
For years we have been talking about a black person running for president and now we have one who is gualified he may not know everything but as any one else does we grow as we go I believe he is the one for the job this is no coincidence that he is running now.
The Clintons aren’t thinking about our young children their daughter is grown, Mr.Obamas understands, his children are still young and he will care about issues concerning our youth and I believe he really wants to help people he seems so sincere.
This is not a hard decision for me and as the previous post said about going back I thought about that too, I felt uneasy about voting for someone I had voted for before and they are already out the white house why would I put them back in,it felt like I was going back, just never felt right. Thank you for this post.

This discussion - and i’ve only read through about the first 10 - is surprisingly consistent on on target. Other media outlets are skewing toward this point of view in contrast to trying to be impartial. There has been too consistent a theme of surrogate foot-in-mouth disease, all of it from the Clinton camp.
I want to get it out there because I have not yet seen it in print or have i yet heard it on the broadcast media, but it seems to me that its quite obvious that the design of the Clinton offensive, in the form of her Martin Luther King references was to equate Obama to, at best, an eloquent orator, like King who needed a president to move the pen across the paper to turn acts into law. That was an indelicate metaphor, but very clear to me. Her camp needed to dullen some of the luster of Obama’s edge in the oratory department. The indirect assertion, however, was to suggest that Obama is, at best, an orator, which also says indirectly that his aspiration to be president is nearer to the likelihood of former rhetorically blessed presidential aspirants of African American descent - Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton - than it is nearer to an actual possibility. Thats the true unsavoriness of the Clinton campaign’s offense.

I thought about that last night. Boycotting BET.
I watch it very little and it would not be a problem for me, the few times I have had it on I flip the channel, no substance and they favor certain, my friend said she believes Bob is messing with Keisha Cole or her mama (joke).
This is a shame and that picture of Hillary does look sick no class, no grace, looks like poor white trash I pray she never represents this country. I tell you this if she is the nominee, then the republicans can have it because I am not voting for Hillary ever I swear before you and God almighty because if she gets in and there is some mess and I believe it will be and she and Bill gives black folks her you no what to kiss, I can hold my head and say I not put them there.
I believe a lot of these women are single, some are lesbians and they are into this womens lib mess and they hate men and they think a woman is going to do something great for the, stupid all Hillary wants is your vote.Hillary don’t give a flip about you all you bit the bait when she cried, I believe some women has wised up and know they were manipulated, and I know black women are not this stupid and gullible.
The other people are right, it doesn’t make any sense to vote for someone who was once in the white house been out for eight years Hillary&Bill have control issues and this has been their plan for years her becoming a senator motive was to run for the presidency when she and Bill were acting like they weren’t sure they knew all the time, I don’t trust them, I just don’t have a peace about them or their legacy, they are all for self. They want total control of the country…we are in some serious trouble I feel it. I don’t not have a peace about Hillary Clinton or any woman at this time being president and I am a woman. Like someone else said we know how to pray and something is not quite registering and these antics don’t show any integrity or character.

You know its really strange but I have had this uneasy feeling about Hillary and it started before the Iowa race, I wasn’t sure about anything but I was so elated when Obama won Iowa.
I too know something ain’t right and when I went to church Sunday my Pastor talked about bibical leadership and he spoke about the Jezebel spirit and I read all the post, and he he said you women are going to have to be careful because that spirit is trying to decieve you he talked about it being a controlling spirit and it hates any authority other than it’s own and has to always have it’s way and is powerful in manipulation, witchcraft.
I went home because I know I had my answer, and I read these post and a couple of people mentioned the Jezebel spirit and it was my confirmation that this woman is not right.

I like the way you responded and there is the difference between. You meant he was the only black senator in the senate today, and he had to dream and believe to even get there. I feel you.I guess he meant a lot of sceptics along the way even then.
Oh yea it is true as someone else said when people spoke on his behalf they did not speak ill of anyone. They stayed with the purpose of why they were speaking did not trash anyone. Class act and I don’t believe Obama is having that mess in his camp either.

President Clinton’s 1994 Crime Bill and Bob Johnson’s BET were two of the worst things to ever happen to the Black community. Bob Johnson needs to go back to the country club or go watch his daughter ride her horse and stay out of intelligent VOTING Black folks business. If he thinks the voting Black Community is going to jump on Hillary’s bandwagon because Bob says jump, he is one stupid billionaire. By the way, I’m not voting for Obama because he’s Black and I could care less that Hillary is white… I listen to what comes out of her mouth and see that she is NOT TOO DIFFERENT than the idiot running the country now. She will give huge tax breaks to the wealthy, pour a few more trillion into the Iraq war, maintain the injustice system that is crushing the Black family, and bow to the pharmaceutical companies’ and insurance conglomerates’ stranglehold on America’s healthcare system. SHE AIN’T GON’ CHANGE A DAMN THING!!! I’ll take Obama’s “inexperience” over Hillary’s so-called “readiness” ANY DAY.

For Obama research it on youtube, look it up on news sources. I agree he hasn’t spoken much on Jena 6 (understandable because even the hype behind it has been flawed, I’m not even for the Jena 6 now, after the whole donation money controversy and the way the boys have handled their situation) but he has alluded to it when discussing Genarlow Wilson, the young black man who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for having underage sex (even though both him and that girl were underage at the time). He spoke out against that and pledged to prevent future issues of discrimination like that.

The majority of you seem to be going for Obama and some for Hillary, so I’m going to toss a thought out here for consideration:
Keeping in mind the Republican trickery of the past, what if all the Obama hype is setup? Think about this.
Ultimately, the white-right don’t want a black man or a woman to be President, so with all that’s happening, how do they make sure it doesn’t happen? By allowing Obama to win the Democratic nomination and all the Hillary supporters swinging Republican on election day. Then, guess what, Republican rule is still in effect.
Hillary and Bill are not friends of the Black community no matter what you may think. They are in bed with the Bushes, so whether Hillary wins or not, she and Bill are still being taken care of. Those two are power-hungry and dirty. Bill’s been playin’ the Black community for a fool for a long time.
This election is the most important one ever. While I truly do think Obama is a solid candidate, I don’t trust the majority-white and their machinations. They are not above outright cheating (as you’ve seen before). Therefore, while Obama is still on my radar, even if he did win the election, he would be a target for ignorant fools. I’m really concerned with the Republican party trying to pull another “okey-doke” on everyone again. We really need to take a second look at Edwards and how he’s voted on issues that impact us…..
Just a thought….I’d love to hear feedback.

I promise, this will be my last post. I rarely post online, but you young people have delighted me with your intelligence and thoughtfulness. My concern is that you not - out-of-hand - accept something as true simply because it appears in the New York Times. I am more concerned, though, about this thread’s dangerous subtext.
Blacks are being pitted against women, young people against old, and Barack has been attacked for being pro-Israel - anti-Semitism is rearing its ugly head. Bob Johnson is being castigated (and rightly so) for his crimes against the Black community, but some because he’s rich. And Lesbians and the women’s movement, for no apparent reason, are being maligned.
And, we’re attacking each other as coons and Uncle Toms, simply because we disagree.
Racism, classism, sexism, ageism, anti-Semitism, and homophobia - a prescription for the devisiveness that will render us powerless as a people and guarantee a Republican win. Don’t get bogged down with my generation’s baggage, and the hatespeak we lay on Jesus. Your generation is ready for the conversation on how these oppressions interlock, and you are ready to build the kind of coalitions we need to bring about real change.
To develop the polical analysis you need to frame this conversation in a useful way, start off with Michael Eric Dyson, Bell Hooks and Barbara Smith, not necessarily in that order.. Then, you’ll better understand - and question - how Obama and Clinton fashion their policies around race and gender. (Incidentally, both are pro-choice, and both support gay rights, gay marriages, notwithstanding. )
Peace, young brothers and sisters. You make me proud..

Had to respond to to Stop the Hate:
Re-read the post to which you responded of mine. The reference to the Jena Six was not specific to those six young Black men, but to the socio-economic conditions that shape the lives of young Black men in general. (Nothing justifies gang banging anybody, but the punishment the Jena Six received was not equal to that dished out for similiar offenses committed by white kids in the town) My query to both candidates is what policies they’re proposing to make this a more equitable and just society. I’m also concerned about poor young white men in appalachia, poor young Mexican men in Texas, etc. - Oppression is oppression and ranking oppressions doesn’t make a helluva lot of sense. “When any of us is oppressed (women, gays and Lesbians, old people, Blacks, Jews, Arabs, the elderly, the disabled), all of us are oppressed.”.

Mark and J (both of whom are directly above my post) seem…well..suspect. I know that we all know there are people of varying races and genders who will go to boards and attempt to bring discord.
If you are real–Mark, how dare you assume that everyone who is pro-obama has failed to examine the issues? The condescending nature of that very assumption makes you a suspect undercover “other” in my book.
Furthermore, Hillary Clinton has the audacity to continue harping on her alleged 30+ years of “experience”. WTH is her experience? She has only been a senator for a short time. She was not in public office prior to that. So should my husband be able to go into the Supreme Court and be permitted to argue because he has 14 years experience being married to a lawyer? (of course he won’t be permitted to do so)
Do you want to have surgery done by a woman who has been “married to a doctor” for the past 30 years? She won’t get a chance to put a knife to me–that’s for sure!
The Clintons KNOW some black people, generally, can show a real severe lack of good logical reasoning…That is a nice way of saying “dumb as a box of rocks” . They KNOW this because black people have continued to sing their praises for no good reason. A white man blows a saxaphone in a jazz concert and all of a sudden it means he loves black people?!!! That is insane and a very sick showing of people who desperately need to believe they are loved.
Hililary is showing all Black people what she truly thinks and feels and believes about Blacks. It is 2008 and Bill just told you that having a black man as president is a “fairy tale”. They are telling you that they think you are DUMB AS A BOX OF ROCKS and the older generation seems to be buying it.
Those of us under “ancient” years of age will have to go out en masse and vote…which is why they are trying to push voter identification rules….see? Don’t believe the hype.
And you infiltrators need to kick rocks. (that means get lost) and stop pretending to be young african-americans for hillary when in reality you are probably bored white dudes with too much internet time on your hands.

Don’t you all think its funny that something like this would come out right before the Hilary campaign special on BET is going to air? They’re just mad they don’t have Oprah’s support.
Of course it took President Johnson to sign the Civil Rights Act into law but THE CONTEXT OF HER REMARK was offensive for two reasons - first, it minimized the work, perseverance, struggle, pain, and accomplishments of Dr. King and all who fought and DIED alongside him as if Johnson was the one who was on the frontgounds. Secondly, her timing couldn’t have been worse - making a comment like that on the WEEKEND of Dr. King’s birthday made what she said even worse.
TRUE supporters of the black community (black or white) don’t work to divide it to gain advantage. It seems that some negroes are confusing Hillary with Bill. Hillary is NOT her husband, people!!! Bill and Hillary are only up in black people’s faces to exploit their votes. Anytime there’s something to gain from the black community, here they come and then they want to throw all their “support” back in your face. They’re capitalizing off that old house n**** mentality.
And don’t let the black skin fool you - watch out for the wolves in sheep’s clothing. Mr. Johnson needs to keep his mouth SHUT - this is a man who has used his network to do nothing but capitalize off controlling the mindsets of young black people through manipulation, degrading images of blacks, and reenforing stereotypes. He sold out a long time ago - to the conglomorates! Think for YOURSELVES, people. KNOW YOUR HISTORY- Find out the facts, and make the decisions for YOURSEVLES.

@ #56 JYGALO: “And for the last time, we are black…an African-American is a naturalized citizen from Africa!”
What an ignoramus you are. This innate lack of knowledge of self is the same reason Bob Johnson is so lost & confused. You dont rightly know who you are. YOU are an AFRICAN who was dragged over to America in chains, and where it not for MLK forcing the hand of your oppressor to pass the Civil Roights Act, you still wouldn’t have “naturalised” into an “African-American” proper. And so begrudgingly they passed that Act, that they never let you forget who you really are…that’s why they insist on calling you “African-American” and NOT simply American like they call themselves. It is a term coined out of a supremacist mind-set with the sole intent of dividing and differentiating.
Dont you get it? Talking bout “we in America are blacks NOT Africans”; so I guess those in Africa must be whites, right? GTFOH! Only one fate awaits a tree dis-associated from it’s roots - DEATH by self-consumption, for it would have lost it’s primary source of nourishment; and when you pit the mind-set of Bob Johnson against the mind-set of Al Sharpton, my point becomes quite clearly illustrated.

Not sure if this article has been posted.
This is great article on the hypocrisy that is Bob Johnson regarding his tactless comments on Presidential hopeful, Sen. Barack Obama.
Davey D makes some interesting points.
Why Bob Johnson is an Asshole & a Hypocrite
by Davey D
Former BET President and founder Bob Johnson is an asshole and hypocrite. Lemme not pull punches, be politically correct, beat around the bushes or try to impress high brow readers who feel I should be less crass and gentler with my words so I can appeal to their sensibilities. It’s 2008 and unfortunately being nice and proper doesn’t quite get the message across, especially when it comes to Bob Johnson and his recent disparaging remarks about presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama.
For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m referring to Johnson getting on stage to introduce Senator Hillary Clinton at a rally and expressing outrage about Obama’s past. He said; “Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood. I won’t say what he was doing, but he said it in his book.”
It was a cheap shot referencing Obama’s drug use when he was a young man. This was an activity that Obama freely admitted to in his memoirs ‘Dreams from My Father’ and on some level I can see it being fair game, but coming from a guy like Johnson, that’s like former President Bill Clinton giving marital advice to Hallie Berry’s former husband admitted sex addict Eric Benet. I heard Johnson make these remarks and I was like ‘Negroe go back into your cave, please sit down and leave the politics to someone else’.
I keep asking myself, where does Johnson get off slamming Obama about the wrongs of drug use when he piloted one of the largest media institutions [BET] that provided a worldwide platform that for the most part glorified and legitimized the lifestyles of those who not only used drugs but also sold them. In all the years we’ve known of ‘billionaire Bob Johnson we have not seen him get on any stage and diss former drug dealers like Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Rick Ross or any number of artists whose videos he would routinely play coupled with sit down interviews conducted by fawning hosts who never ever challenged these artists for resurrecting a ‘criminal’ lifestyle in both their songs and videos they supposedly left behind.
The Bob Johnson we know, has never gone out of his way to publicly smash on artists who like Mary J Blige or Fergie who admitted to using drugs in the past and have since gotten their lives together and moved onward and upward. If anything, the former head of BET could be seen publicly praising them while courting them to appear at his award shows or Spring Bling concerts.
Johnson certainly never came out swinging on admitted drug abusing artists like Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, Flava Flav or DMX who all had reality shows either on BET or the one of the other stations within the Viacom network where he had influence as a VP.
One would think a guy of Johnson’s new found ‘high moral character’ would’ve been smashing on drug use and drug peddling a long time ago. Could you imagine what sort of shockwaves would’ve been sent around the world if Johnson even as a retired media mogul had spoke out and said; ‘No Bobby! No Whitney! We won’t give them a reality show until those two get themselves healed and free of drugs’? Can you imagine if he insisted the DMX show ‘Soul of a Man’ was centered around him getting over cocaine addiction?
Imagine the shockwaves if Johnson said; “Hell no Jigga we ain’t supporting your album ‘American Gangster’ cause you highlighting the sordid lifestyle of heroin dealers like Frank Lucas and we are against that type of behavior?”
Could you imagine if Johnson found his nuts when at the helm of BET and shut down any and all videos from artists who had ‘dirty pasts’ that they were trying to exploit?
Sadly the Bob Johnson we know, has seemingly had no problem in making billions from highlighting the drug dealing, drug using lifestyle. Adding to this disappointment is the fact that this proud African American billionaire did things like remove programming that would make us question and shun such questionable behavior. It was on Johnson’s watch that BET got rid of great award winning shows like Teen Summit.
It was on Johnson’s watch that we saw incredible commentators like Tavis Smiley and Ed Gordon disappear.
It was on Johnson’s watch we saw the BET nightly news shrink and then became a non existent. These shows were shut down in spite the objections ranging from scholars like Dr. Cornel West to the 8 major Black fraternities and sororities to more recently church groups leading the Enough is Enough campaign. It was on Johnson’s watch that many in the community were up in arms protesting BET when they had that Step-N-Fetcher like cartoon called Cita’s World. Y’all remember that one right?
As I’m penning this article, I’m vividly recalling Johnson arrogantly responding to critics on a widely televised ‘townhall’ where he was confronted for firing Tavis Smiley, Johnson said that BET stands for ‘Black Entertainment’ and he is in the business to entertain the masses and that he was not obligated to provide news programming. Who knows, maybe Johnson was trying to be ‘entertaining’ when he made is divisive remarks about Obama.
How is it that Johnson found the courage to stand up against Obama but was mealy mouthed against the artists with questionable pasts that he highlighted on his network who in turn became the face and MIS-perception of all African Americans to the rest of the world? Many of us who are not celebrities and have traveled overseas know the pain we’ve endured of having to explain to fascinated yet misguided individuals in far off lands that we are nothing like the characters and depicted in the videos shown on BET? I know I’ve had my share of conversations where I had to put things in proper context in places ranging from Barcelona to Scotland to Beirut where BET specifically was cited as the referencing point.
Instead, of being a champion for our people who could use his resources and influence to change widely held, worldwide misperceptions and stereotypes of us, he opted to become something more foul then any drug dealer. He became a propagandist of the worse kind. Instead of hustlin’ crack, Johnson hustled Black pathologies, distorted images and misinformation under the banner of Black culture which has resulted in many believing we are part and parcel to the unchallenged buffoonery he allowed highlighted.
Instead of celebrating Obama for overcoming the odds including the scorch of drugs to possibly become the next president of the United States, this ‘negroe’ Bob Johnson wants to act like a lap dog for Hillary Clinton and bash on him all while being a media drug peddler of sorts who is in a big way responsible for normalizing drug culture.
And please don’t get me wrong, I am in no way saying Obama is not above criticism. I have lots of critiques that I can launch at him. For the record, I am not the biggest Obama fan. He gives great speeches and has lots of charisma There’s no deny the energy he brings to mainstream political discussion, but from where I sit his politics don’t go quite go far enough. I want Obama to be the type of politician to have been on the ground front and center leading the masses when we went to protest in Jena. Instead all I got was a prèss release.
I want Obama to have been the politician who is bold and assertive and uncompromising to the point that he would speak out on behalf of the SF8 or the Puerto Rican activists who are being jammed up by the Feds. I want Obama to be the type of guy who is smashing hard on police brutality and this current wave of gentrification. I want Brack to have been present in New Orleans when they were demolishing all that public housing. However, when I argue with my colleagues like writers Adisa Banjoko or Eric K Arnold, our spirited debates center around Obama’s position on issues.
Even the big debate between rap stars Rhymefest (Obama supporter) and Lupe Fiasco (Hillary supporter) has centered around the politics of the candidates. Nobody is brow beating Obama for having used drugs in the past. The Obama we know and see today is clean, smart and razor sharp and we don’t see him coddling and being a big enabler to drug culture the way that billionaire Bob Johnson has been over all those years. He made his billions by pimping drug culture on his network to the fullest.
The biggest challenge that all of us as African Americans have is because Johnson had made some significant economic accomplishments he led many into believing what he was doing as the head of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate like BET was building upon past freedom struggles waged by the likes of Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, the Black Panthers and others.
The sad irony to all this is that if King and X were still alive waging battles against oppression, they would probably be excluded from the day to day banter of BET. We barely see or hear about these past leaders on the station today. What was the last in-depth discussion you saw or heard on BET under Johnson’s reign about King beyond I have a Dream speech? What’s the last insightful story you saw on Malcolm X?
If you listened to Dr. King’s thoughts on media then you know one thing, that BET and the foolishness its put out in the name of our people would’ve been in stark opposition to where King stood in terms of using media as a tool to uplift and inform the community. Like I said Martin and Malcolm would never be on BET aside from a few documentary clips and sound bites if they were around today. If you don’t believe me and think this is far fetched lets take a short trip down memory lane.
Those of us who are old enough to recall, when BET first came out it held a lot of promise and became a source of pride. It promised to fill the void and become a much needed answer to MTV which started out refusing to air videos from Black artists. Eventually Michael Jackson, Run DMC and later Yo MTV Raps knocked down some of those doors, but BET started off promising to be our uncompromised mouthpiece.
I recall in the late 80s as the cable industry expanded, BET was not included on many of the cable systems and there were spirited campaigns to get them on. It was young 20 something year old activists who were then part of what I would call the Public Enemy/ Afrocentric generation that took to heart some of the promises made by Bob Johnson who at that time called upon people to stand up for BET and demand it be included as a cable channel. BET’s exclusion from local cable systems was seen as yet another example of how prevalent racism was in this country. Many of us were coming out of the tailspin of the crack era and as Hip Hop’s Golden Age kicked in many eagerly sought to fight the power. Getting BET on cable was one such fight.
Here in the Bay Area it was rap activists like artist Chill E.B. who worked tirelessly, organizing letter writing campaigns and call ins to get BET on cable systems outside of Oakland in neighboring cities like Concord, Fremont and other areas it was absent. I recall doing radio shows and even having someone from BET (it may have even been Johnson himself, I have to check my tape archives) come on the air to talk about the importance of all of us pulling together to help insure that BET got a fair shot. I recall giving out phone numbers to the offending cable outlets and encouraging listeners to stand up for BET. Years later many of the activists who spearheaded the fight to get BET on cable for the masses to see can’t get on BET themselves to share and inform viewers of on going struggles in our community. For example, I know Chill EB who is a war vet and has spoken out against the war and has even done songs and videos about the topic never has been invited to sit on the 106 & Park couch.
It’s ironic that Obama who at 40 something would’ve been part of that Public Enemy/ Afrocentric generation that initially rallied for causes like getting BET on cable systems now finds himself being criticized by a guy like Bob Johnson. How quickly they turn. But I guess we shouldn’t be surprised. Shiesty people rarely change their stripes.
My boy and fellow writer, Jelani Cobb raised an important question in his recent article on this topic for the Washington Post which was; ‘What were the Clintons thinking when they got Johnson to stomp for them? She might as well gotten Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch or his employee Bill O’Reilly to stomp for her. Her picking Johnson is like me running for office and getting a gestapo like guy like Rudy Giuliani to stomp on my behalf-its not a good look and brings into question Senator Clinton’s clear lapse in judgement. All she had to do was look at the number of protests launched against BET in the past few years for their degrading images of women. That should’ve been a clear enough message. In other words if Hillary thinks so little of Black people that she went and dug up a cat likes Bob Johnson then I’m gonna have to close the book on her and bounce the other way and roll with Obama, Cynthia McKinney, Jared Ball or Dennis Kucinich-anyone but her.

We have got to stop falling for this foolishness. Everytime something really great is getting ready to happen in America the powers that be always go to the race issue. It is the one thing that they know will divide everyone. It is still a sinsitive issue and they know that. And it keeps everyone off the reall issues.
Did anyone watch meet the press this past Sunday when she stated she did not realize she was voting for war. This is suppose to be a leader. A woman who did not even realize she was voting for a war. Come on people stop falling for this foolishness. I am talking about all of us as a country.

I can tell that this move by Bob hit a “set back” nerve with you just like it did with many of us! And, you should know that many of us read every word that you wrote! The Bobs, Wards and Cosby’s are self-serving, “I got mine” people who quickly forget from whenced they came!
I hope you keep sharing your views!

366. KEEPING UP!!!!!
===================================
I’m feeling you!!! Hillary wants to be a “Superwoman” like the song Stevie and Donny sing! She’s already saying the wrong things and hurting people! She’s divisive and sneaky like her husband, Bill! Problem is…in the end, they always get caught!
The love among black people is still strong, but there are those like Bob, Ward and Bill who are chosing to break the allience! And, they have that right! And, we’ll open our arms to them when they come running back. But, man it sure does a lot of harm!
Translations:
Hillary wants to be a superwoman
But is that really in her head
But I just want to live each day to love her
for what she is
Hillary wants to be another movie star
But is that really in her mind
And all the things she wants to be
She needs to leave behind
But, very well, I believe I know you-very well
Wish that you knew me too-very well
And I think I can deal with everything going through your head
Very well, and I think I can face-very well
Wish that you knew me too-very well
And I think I can cope with everything going through your head
Hillary wants to be a superwoman
And try to boss the bull around
But does she really think that she will get by with a dream
The woman want to be a superwoman
And I just had to say good-bye
Because I can’t spend all my hours start to cry…
===========================================
Remember that one?
Soon she’ll be singing Yesterday like the Beatles and Donny:
Yesterday, all her troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay
Oh, Hillary believe in yesterday.
Suddenly, she’s not half the man she used to be,
There’s a shadow hanging over me.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.
Why she had to run I don’t know she wouldn’t say.
She said something wrong, now she longs for yesterday.
Yesterday, politicing was such an easy game to play.
Now she need a place to hide away.
Oh, Hillary believes in yesterday.
Why she had to go I don’t know she wouldn’t say.
She said something wrong, now she long for yesterday.
Yesterday, politicing was such an easy game to play.
Now she needs a place to hide away.
Oh, Hillary believes in yesterday.

Yes, Laugh Out Loud, I’m angry as hell and I’m not gonna take it anymore, lmao! I always enjoy how the people that accuse me of being an angry negro will be the first ones to expose themselves as true creatures of hate because the most hateful people in the world are those that love lies. Make a counter-point to my point since I’m so nonsensical. I bet that your clownish ass cannot. What difference does it make to you whether I speak about my people or not? Are you a cave-dweller or a rambunctious, loyal, well-trained circus monkey? Please edify me. Before you attack me, since you’re so “pragmatic”, please present a precedent for when the American government has assisted the negro at all, much less through the voting system. Get back to me as soon as possible. You have to either be a caucasian or a coon n***er because those are the two most patriotic creatures on the planet earth and those are also the two creatures that love lies the most. I have nothing “pragmatic” to offer about this issue because I have no hope for this society. The only people that do have hope for this society are those that love Satan. So that’s my challenge to you, lol. No more bullshit rhetoric. Give me precedent and better yet, get back to me when this shit fails. I want statistics and numbers detailing how the quality of life for the negro has systematically improved.

It’s possible sis, and your thought process is great. The only thing is that, from what I understand (as Dats Da Truth alluded to in comment #278), Hillary has already been anointed for the presidency. In my opinion, many people don’t grasp that the point of these elitist groups is that they do not believe that the average person deserves the right to have a say in who governs over them. The average person; in the estimation of these elitists, is too stupid to understand what’s good for them, so to placate said average person, a ruse must be designed that is intricate enough to convince that person that they have an effect on their own fate. Hence, the “electoral process” in which “candidates” parade across televisions and enact performances reminiscient of the WWF until the already known winner takes their rightful place over the populace. Based on the comments on many of these threads, the elitists are correct in their gauge of the stupidity, and outright gullibility, of the average person. Keep in mind that only certain politicians are aware of the inner workings of the system because even average politicians are too stupid to be trusted. This is why most of these presidents and dignataries must be trained at these illuministic institutions like Oxford, and at a lower level, the Ivy League schools in America to even be considered as possible caretakers for the continuation of the agendas of the “elite”.

Billary’s a damn fool if she thinks that aligning herself with this buffoon is gonna rub most Blk folks the right way. Fuck outta here.
& so what if Obama dabbled in drugs when he was a kid? So? Bill admitting to smoking weed yet he “didn’t inhale.” Bush was a cokehead alki & is a 2-term prezy. Stop the madness. Obama’s not the same person he was when he was younger. Most ppl evolve. Obama experimenting with drugs as kid doesn’t equate to the daily denigration of the Blk race via BET.
Billary better find a cure for that foot-in-the-mouth disease before her Blk supporters start an exodus.
Edwards & Obama are better candidates.

C’mon now. If Bob was referring to Obama’s community work, why didn’t he just say “community work?” Why allude to something dirty if your words are harmless? What’s so vulgar about those words that he couldn’t just say them? It’s well-known that Obama has a political grassroots background & that’s neither vulgar nor offensive to anyone’s senses.
It’s amazing how he’s gotten some of you fooled into thinking that he wasn’t bringing up his teenage drug use.

If ya’ll wanna learn about Barack & this Billary machine, go on YouTube & search for “Bob Johnson.” Even Fox News questioned Billary’s implications of Barack selling drugs. When her stupid-ass campaign head tried to race-bait the right-wing media w/ that shit, dude “resigned.”
