POLITICS: MICHIGAN RECAP

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Mitt Romney won Michigan’s Republican presidential primary, beating Senator John McCain and gaining a victory that gives his campaign new life.

Romney becomes the third different winner in three major early-state contests, and his victory brings dramatic confusion to a GOP race that gives new meaning to the word “unsettled.”

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, was counting on Michigan to regain momentum after losses earlier this month to Huckabee in Iowa and McCain in New Hampshire. With each of the three leading contenders having a victory under his belt, the Republican nomination race is a free-for-all going into South Carolina and the caucuses in Nevada on the same day.

“Only a week ago, a win looked like it was impossible,” Romney said at his celebration in Southfield, Michigan. “But then you got out and told America what they needed to hear.”

The Michigan Democratic primary vote was essentially meaningless: the national party stripped the state of its delegates because it held its contest too early in the election season, and Senator Hillary Clinton was the only major Democratic contender whose name appeared on the ballot.

The Republican nomination race seems more like a real “race” and about the issues and what each state feels is important with a little loyalty thrown in, especially as the Romney has ties to Michigan and Mccain had some ties to the previous state in his last bid.

HOWEVER…………

The democratic nomination race, seems like a typical high skool popularity competition, based on who has more widespread appeal….

Kinda typical!

CL: It would be nice, since you have the attention of many, to have you guys push voter registration and have your team develop a nice slogan. Thanks!

Unfortunately, the Democrats almost always shoot themselves in the foot come election with all the mug slinging and finger pointing within the party. I truly wish they’d stay on topic with solid ideas and plans for change.

I don’t know much about politics but the voting system seems very suspect to me. It is unbelievably complex and to me it just lacks transparency. How can we know if we have a truly democratic and fully representative system if we, the voting public, can’t even tell whats going on? I sure as hell don’t understand all these different rules & exceptions. Whatever…i guess I should just shut my mouth, tick the box saying ‘Obama’ and hope for the best.

There is no way in hell white folks will let a Mormon into the white other than being a guess, this is the same religion up until 1978 that said there was nothing wrong with the way Europe treated Africans during the slave trade. The Mormons make Yusef X’s boy Ron Paul look like John Brown.

Seeing as how I live in Michigan I must say the Democrats screwed themselves over by removing their names from the ballots (except for Hillary). Some people I talked to said they were upset that they didn’t take Michigan more seriously, especially with all of the economic hardships we’re currently going through. Despite Michigan’s decision to move up the primary date they still should have come and spoke to the Michigan Democrats about how they plan to help us resolve our problems. I know some Democrats who voted for Romney or Hillary, instead of Uncommitted (like me) just to prove a point to the Democrats who took their names off of the ballot.

My friend was telling me that the Mormon doctrine (their bible) teaches something about how black people have no souls, and are not favored by God. I definitely don’t want someone born and raised in this religion to be the leader of the country that I live in. If he feels like God don’t care about me then there is no reason in hell that he would.

Thanks for clearing up the information concerning the Michigan Democratic delegates being meaningless. On CNN, they thoroughly confused me with their footnotes. On another note, being that I want Obama to win, I really wish he would have at least had his name on the ballot. Thinking past the primaries, if I were from Michigan and an undecided voter, I would think twice about voting for someone, namely Obama, if I felt he didn’t take the time to even put his name on the ballot in my state.

Even if Obama and Edwards added their names to the ballot, the results of the election still wouldn’t have counted, because the national party took away their delegates after Michigan BROKE THE RULES.

The Democratic Party, the national party, had already scheduled the caucauses way in advanced, before the elections even started. It was agreed that Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina, would hold their caucauses before Super Tuesday with the rest of the other states with delegates. It was planned that way until Michigan (and Florida), broke the rules by deciding that they’ll just push the date up more, and add their state earlier with the others, last minute… It can’t be that way, because the candidates can’t change their schedule for them just because a state decided to jump in line. You can’t just tell them that they have to come to their state NOW, it doesn’t work that way, so Edwards and Obama took off their names from the ballot (don’t know why Clinton didn’t but whatever).

Now that is just my take on the whole thing, don’t know if it’s right or wrong, but I just don’t want people blaming Obama and Edwards and think that they didn’t care about Michigan, when really they should be blaming Michigan. J. Dakar, if you can clarify some things that would be awesome!

#9: Twice.

#15: No clarification really needed; great job! I will only add that some of the Democratic candidates even threatened to sue if their names were restored to the ballot. All eight Democratic candidates (at the time) did agree not to campaign in Michigan and Florida because they broke DNC rules.

Peace and blessings,

#15 thanks for elaborating. However, it could be conceivable that people could blame Obama and/or Edwards if they don’t know the whole story - as I didn’t. I consider myself highly educated, (BS Engineering, MBA and currently working on JD) and I was unaware that MI was to blame vice Obama and Edwards. My point is that I, as an uninformed person (and possibly superficial), I would feel slighted. And I am sure that others, citizens of MI included, are uninformed and possibly would feel slighted because Obama and Edwards didn’t pay them any attention - let’s just hope they aren’t as superficial as I am.

Jakar, upon what basis would Obama and Edwards sue? I would look it up myself but I have other laws to research - as I probably shouldn’t be on this blog at this time either!

I’ve heard, here in MI, that our Governor Jennifer Granholm and possibly Senator Carl Levin have been promised possible cabinet positions should Hillary Clinton be elected. Both the governor and senator were instrumental in getting legislation passed that allowed the primary election date to be moved up. I’ve heard that Hillary Clinton initially agreed to remove her name from the ballot and also not campaign in MI but went back on her word and didn’t remove her name as the other candidates did.

THAT’S TRUE ABOUT MI…SO THEREFORE IT WAS ILLEGAL BECAUSE OF HILLARYS ANTICS SO DEMS WERE DISQUALIFIED.
THANKS FOR YOUR INTEGRITY HILLARY.

FYI ALSO TODAY ON CNN HER OWN COUNTERPARTS DID NTO DEFEND HER THEY CLEARLY STATED SHE WAS THE ONE WHO PUT RACE INTO THE CAMPAIGN AND THAT WE HAVE SEEN THE BEST AND WORST OF HILLARY AND NOW HER STRATEGY IS GOING TO PLAY NICE IN OREDER TO GAIN MOMENTUM, THEY SAID SHE TRIED THE CLINTON OLD SCHOOL STATEGY OF DIRTY POLITICS SOMETHING WHICH BILL HAS ALWAYS BEEN KNOWN FOR SINCE ARKANSAS AND BECAUSE OBAMA’S CHARACTER AND THE WAY HE HANDLED HIMSELF IT DID NOT WORK.

ON ANOTHER NETWORK THEY STATED THEY BELIEVED OBAMA WAS SINCERE AND HE MAY NOT BE PERFECT BUT HE IS WILLING TO DO THE WORK AND DO HIS BEST. THEY SAID IT IS NOT CHARISMA BUT HE IS A GENUINELY UPSTANDING MAN AND THE WAY HE HANDLED HIMSELF PROVES THAT. THEY SAID HE DID NOT TRY TO FIGHT BACK BECAUSE HE WAS THINKING OF THE GOOD OF THE PARTY AND THE PEOPLE IT WAS NOT THAT HE IS WEAK.

OBAMA 2008!!!!! YES WE CAN, WE CAN DO THIS!!!!!!

WE HAVE TO REGISTER AND VOTE!!!!! THIS IS OUR FUTURE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT……

I understand that Michigan’s decision was illegal, but not everyone here does. That’s what I was trying to get across in my comment. I live in Detroit and a lot of people here do not FULLY UNDERSTAND what is even going on or what the hell a primary is. That in itself is a shame. So, when they see the Republicans coming to speak to the PEOPLE of Michigan about how they plan on helping her citizens get through this miserable time they felt slighted by the Democrats. Now I am a 200% supporter of Obama, but I still wish he would’ve come and at least let Michigan’s people know his plan. The national unemployment rate is 5% ours here in Michigan is %7. While we have gained new jobs in diverse industries we have lost a HUGE amount of auto based jobs. And for some people here working for one of the Big 3 (Ford, GM, Chrysler) is all they know. It’s what their grandparents did, their parents, and now them. So, whoever the next President is has to have a plan for Michigan. I was blessed enough to go to college (UofM!!!!) and have a great job, but not everyone here is as fortunate.

I know I’m probably rambling on, but I just wanted to make sure I made my point clear. Yes it was illegal what Michigan did and I do hold them accountable for NOT following the rules. BUT Perception means a lot and showing some sort of SUPPORT for her people wouldn’t hurt. I’ve seen tons of commercials from Romney, McCain, Kucinich, and Hillary prior to the start of the primaries about what they would do to help Michigan. None from Edwards or my favorite Obama. So that alone is causing people to have doubt in those two. That’s another reason why I was hoping they would come and let people know they have love for Michigan and what they plan on doing to help the people here. Now I personally LOVE Obama and I voted uncommitted for him! I think he would be the best person to run our country next. However, I actually watch CNN, MSNBC, etc… and I follow politics. A lot of my friends don’t follow politics like I do. The lack of knowledge and understanding that SOME people here (MI) have may have done the Dems who removed their names more bad than good. I’m by no means trying to speak for everyone in Detroit or Michigan for that matter, but from the many people I have spoken to this is my take on it.

I hope I got my point across more clearly this time.

Thanks for bring political info onto your website. “We” need to be more actively involved in the process. As far as the rightwing Republicans doing for anyone, it ain’t happening. You must be part of the top 1% to benefit from anything they will offer.
Rightwingers don’t believe in the Constituion, yet they call themselves strict-constructionist( code phrase for life before civil rights and women’s rights). Don’t believe the hype. The differnce between the Dems. and Repubs. is that while they both favor corporations, the Dems. will at least share a bit of access to the dollars.

Im from Michigan and the reason why Obama and Edwards were not on the ballot is because they were showing solidarity for the democratic party. The Democratic Party didn’t like that michigan moved their primary up so they pulled out and Hillary should have but didn’t so basically she is using dirty politics or doing anything just to get a win.

I elect MIKE HUCKABEE for PRESIDENT…..these are issues MIKE SAID
# I support the FairTax.
# As Governor of Arkansas, I cut taxes and fees almost 100 times, saving the taxpayers almost $380 million. I left a surplus of nearly $850 million, which I urged should go back to the people.
# Our massive deficit is not due to Americans’ being under-taxed, but to the government’s over-spending.
# To control spending, I believe the President should have the line-item veto.
# I believe in free trade, but it has to be fair trade.
# Globalization, done right, done fairly, can be the equivalent of a big pay raise by allowing us to buy things more cheaply.
