POLITICS: NEW HAMPSHIRE RECAP
Wednesday, January 9, 2008
Senator Hillary Clinton rode a wave of female support in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday night. Clinton won the primary by 39 percent to 36 percent, injecting a sorely needed infusion of optimism to the campaign of the candidate widely dismissed this week as a has-been by media pundits. With virtually all polls suggesting the New York senator would go down to a major defeat Tuesday, her supporters braced for a double digit blowout by Senator Obama - even as she was still reeling from a disappointing third place showing in Iowa last week.
Meanwhile, in the Republican primary, Senator John McCain revived his presidential bid with a Lazarus-like win. McCain had 37 percent of the vote, while Romney trailed with 32 percent, according to results posted by the Associated Press. McCain’s victory dealt another serious blow to Romney, the former governor of neighboring Massachusetts. Romney campaigned hard and spent heavily as he sought wins in Iowa and New Hampshire, only to come up short in both states.
Clinton’s surprise victory now sets up a dramatic one-one-one gender-dominated contest for the presidency between the first major party female presidential candidate and the first major party African-American candidate. And it guarantees that the Democratic presidential primary contest continues tooth-and-nail through Feb. 5, when Californians will weigh in during their “Tsunami Tuesday” primary.
Clinton’s victory came after her advisers had lowered expectations with talk of missteps in strategy and concern about Obama’s momentum coming out of the Iowa caucuses.
Hillary Clinton gets emotional in N.H.
“I come tonight with a very, very full heart,” said an emotional Clinton, who had been accused of being too scripted and cold. She acknowledged a moment on the campaign trail which many said was a turning point in her effort - a rare display of emotion this week in which she teared up talking about her passion for the country and its future.
“In the last week, I listened to you,” she said, “and in the process, I found my own voice. Now together, let’s give America the kind of comeback that New Hampshire has just given me,” she said to cheers.
McCain’s victory was crucial; New Hampshire was widely viewed as a make-or-break state. He has invested nearly all of his limited resources in New Hampshire, which he won in his 2000 bid against George W. Bush. His second attempt for the White House, however, was in trouble last summer because of weak fundraising and a blurred political message, leading him to fire senior advisers and refocus his energy on New Hampshire. This success gives McCain a jolt of momentum heading into Michigan and other early primaries and caucuses. It’s a setback, though, for former Massachusetts Governor Romney, who lost to Huckabee in Iowa on Jan. 3 and had been counting on victories in Iowa and New Hampshire to gain front-runner status.
To cheers of “Mac is back,” McCain told supporters Tuesday night, “My friends, you know I’m past the age when I can claim the noun ‘kid,’ no matter what adjective precedes it. But tonight, we’ve sure showed them what a comeback looks like. Tonight we have taken a step, but only the first step, toward repairing the broken politics of the past and restoring the trust of the American people,” he said.

What do you all think about the next race in South Carolina for Obama? South Carolina is a red neck state. I hope he can pull this one but I dont think so. If Obama wins the prez election who would be his Vice Prez? Who would be Hillary’s Vice Pres?

direct quote from obama
“I think that we should take into account white kids who have been disadvantaged and have grown up in poverty and shown themselves to have what it takes to succeed.”
allow me to change my original comment. he is not anit affirmative action, he thinks that poor whites should also be included in that definition. i apologize for the misinformation. i should have said he doesn’t think affirmative action should be for minorities only but should also include poor whites. in my mind that computes to he is anti affimative action but i can see how others may view it differently. Anyway, hillary thinks the definition should remain as it is

he is up around 20 points in SC polls right now. personally i think it would be a good strategic move for hillary to cede SC to obama and concentrate her resources in more competitive states.

I think it is quite a distinction actually. Obama feels that his kids (or someone like Michael Jordan’s kids) don’t really need the benefits of affirmative action in the way that poor black kids need assistance. The purpose of the law is to give everyone an equal opporunity at education, jobs, and financial security. Obama’s kids start way ahead of most black kids the same way that most white kids start out ahead of most black kids.
I think including economics into the equation makes sense. Plus Repulblicans are a lot less likely to be able to overturn Affirmative Action if you make it about the poor (most of whom are black percentage wise).

I am voting straight Democrat. There is obvious concern about Hillary experience vs Obama’s experience. Well Bill led the country for 8 years. And I must say he did a fine job. The economy was great. The housing market was thriving. Health care guidelines were better accessible for the lower middle class and poor. Bill consulted with his wife on everything. If she is elected, it will be Bill again. She is going to bring the old heads from the Clinton Administration. By all means I like Obama. However, I am more comfortable with Hillary leading the country with Bill by her side. I usually support every Black candidate even Jessie Jackson back in the day… but at this day and age with the war going on and folks that are in my circle had to close businesses because the economy is sooo bad…I got to vote with someone I can trust. For some strange reason he reminds me of Condolesca Rice(one of Bush advisor’s)…I just do not get swayed by Obama’s speeches to vote. I want someone that I can trust…
^^^^^^^^^not trying to offend you or anything, but you need to watch out on who you can and cannot trust. another thing is you as black people cannot use the clintons as a safety net. there’s two flawed things with your assessment with the clintons. one being the case that if we’re going to have hillary as president then we’re going to have bill and everything is going to be okay. one thing you have to know that hillary is not bill, and even during HIS time as president, hillary was seperate from bill. so don’t believe that illusion that we’re going to have another bill clinton administration, that’s just like believing JFK & bobby kennedy were the same people, and they were not, in fact bumped heads alot of times. the 2nd flawed assumption is that we would return to the 90’s. one thing that’s wrong with that is that so much have happened this decade, especially due to the impact of 9/11, it will be IMPOSSIBLE for us to return to the past. that’s exactly whut it is, the past. the question is who is going to lead us in a completely new era? to the new decade? and the majority of the problems today were SEEDED from the 90’s. another thing you have to recognize that the SAME PEOPLE from the 90’s are the same people TODAY running this country. it’s plain musical chairs. in fact, the republicans were the ones that MAINLY dominated both the senate & the house during the clinton administration, the same ones who we put blame on today and kicked them out only to be disappointed by the democrats that are in control today.
whut obama is proposing is to scrap away from those who been connected with the bush/clinton eras…if you think about it, it would be damn near 20 YEARS of a bush, clinton, bush…and possibly clinton. and we need to end that cycle.
as for the experience portion, whom i feel is VERY suspect, because even if hillary acquired bill’s “experience”, whut’s the worth of experience when it comes to bad judgement? bush’s two cabinets had an average of 40 YEARS of EXCUTIVE experience!!! his cabinet is argueably the most experienced cabinet ever in a presidency. where did it get us? whenever i hear about hillary’s experience, i always question whut were her TRIUMPHS? everything i hear her connected with were FAILED projects. the biggest one in which she’s touting today is her so-called healthcare plan…the same one she been touting for over 15 years now! the whitewater scandel is another failure. i haven’t seen, especially for OUR people in where her experience equal to success. AT LEAST with obama’s limited “experience” he have made moves against racial profiling, injustice for the criminal system, calls for cleaning up the environment, and calls for better education. and even BEFORE holding the senator seat, he made accomplishment as a grassroots activist, denying high paying firm positions, because he believe in helping the community. i cannot understand HOW you feel he’s untrustworthy.
in comparison from obama. black people raised up IN SPITE of the clinton administration, not because of it. in fact, there were a number of things he done thru his administration that showed his objection to the black community.
-the sista soulja is a racist comments just to pulls votes
-the denial of Lani Guinier for civil rights attorney general because of her proposition on a new voting system that would of given minorities a fair advantage
-the BOOST of men of color being sent to prison due to the cosignment of the 3 strikes law. as well as the boost up with the death penalty, and the erasement of having prisoners to get an education. in other words, he made prison the new version of slavery.
-his COMPLETE objection to the million man march, which was one of the MAIN reasons we as black people were susseccful towrds the end of that decade, because of the impact and influence for empowerment and improving our lives and our businesses.
-the clintons have NEVER been trustworthy. i wasn’t even suprised as the tactics they used just to get the votes in N.H….the gender card (when obama haven’t YET used the race card), bill clinton calling obama’s run for president “a fairytale”, hillary downplaying the importance of MLK (of ALL people!!!).
our people need to wake up and understand, clinton didn’t do jack for us, we did it ourSELVES! if things were so “okay” in our people during the 90’s then why was an estimated 1 MILLION people marched in the 1st place?? it wasn’t because we want clinton’s help..it was because we were TIRED of the government to help us and decided to take it in our own hands. and it was a success. today’s generation need to look back and see that and be commited to do that for today.
this brings back to whut obama is saying. it’s MORE than one man, but us as a whole UNITING to improve this nation. the division that we have in america is unbelieveable…and in part it’s mainly because of the back 20 years of a bush/clinton/bush…and maybe clinton era…
lastly, the BABY BOOM domination of government is coming to a close. obama is not from that era, he’s the 1st one from the generation X era. most of us here are from the same era that he’s in. we NEED someone that is a representative of us.

Willie Lynch? Have you ever heard of him. It’s called conquer and divide. Pick out any little thing. Contrary to the History 101 you have been reading, but NOT all “black” people are descendants of West African slaves. Some West African slaves captured were also from East african and North Africa and even African island countries like Madagascar, who were in West Africa at the time, maybe traveling or what have you. SO…..actually you don’t know that. And bi-racial people, (Black and white, Black anything) is considered “Black” by US racial standards. We all know that race is a socially constructed fallacy invented by Eurocentrism, but it has come to be a culture subcategory that Obama very much fits into. HE self identifies as Black, and God damn-it that’s what we will call him. There is no wrong or right way to be “Black.” Please stop being ignorant before I take you to school.

Glad to see Hillary win New Hampshire’s vote.
I think that we should support Obama because he is in a tough situation with the presidential election. But we as black people know that the white people do not won’t a black person in the white house.
We as a people need to come together whether we live in the suburbs, the hood, or a manison somewhere. I think it’s about time we support Obama and support our brothers and sisters in whatever we do.

I am baffled as to why people are using the Three Strikes law against Hillary as if it strictly targets black people. The law only throws the book at offenders with serious offenses, not misdemeanors. Granted there are some states that have blurred lines as to what’s considered a felony (like petty theft) but we cannot blame the Clintons for this…blame ourselves for not being vocal or participating in your local state elections and not being aware of how the state will implement the laws given to them. Laws can be amended you know…..just sayin…
ARE YOU AN IDIOT???? The law puts people in jail who committ felonies, like, let’s see the Black man who was put in jail for the rest of his life for stealing a pizza. It’s people like you, that offend me. Your ignorance is just astonishing. this is “google-able” stuff. It’s not like we are all walking around with this information that you are not privy too. I blame Bill Clinton, because he knew damn well what he was doing, and under him the Black jail population rose by 2 million. And it doesn’t just affect Blacks, but WE are the ones who are disproportionately make up the jail population due to racial profiling, harsh sentencing, etc. Which all SKYROCKETED under Bill. I don’t give a damn about people making more money under Bill, if my brother, husband, and father is in jail. Bottom line.

I agree, this cat4everrr person is strange. There’s nothing wrong with white people benefiting from affirmitive action, because many do already: white women. In case you didn’t know, subgroups of whites can be minorities too…the fact minority seemingly equals black to you says alot about your thought process.
Also, are you from NY? How are you so sure Clinton is the way to go? I can tell you first hand, that compared to other politicians that I’ve had experience with, it’s almost as if she didn’t exist, she’s so inacessible. My family has contacted her & her office many times with issues important to us over the years, and we’ve NEVER received a response or any sort of aknowledgement, none whatsoever. Strangely this wasn’t the case with our other senator or elected officials, they contacted us, called us, mailed us, met with us. That’s what a true elected leader should do…some “woman of change” she is. I wish I could take back my votes! To put it plainly, she’s BS people!

Concreteloop I must apologize for last month, for putting you on blast for being too unbalanced in your political section, and I was slow to give any props to J.Dakar, based on his name alone.I know a lot of BullShit Brothas who take on Afrekan names, african_dude@63 would be the best example that I could provide. But J.Dakar thus far has been on point with his post, quick to give comment92@the Iowa Caucus post the help she needed,MOST IMPRESSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!! Back to african_dude, how much love do you think Hillary Kramer has for you?It was confirmed that this woman said without LBJ there would be no Civil Rights Act and Martin Luther King was nothing more than a dreamer….AND THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT TO REPRESENT AMERICA…..DROP SQUAD YOU GOT ANOTHER ONE TO PICK-UP.But seriously african_dude if you know ANYTHING about the slave trade in N.America,S.American, the Caribbean/West Indies is that only the first few generations of slaves from the motherland were pure.By 1836 there were well over 1million black people in the U.S. alone that whites termed Octoroon. It was determined that there are 35 diffrent skin tones that comprises the black race,so as I stated before we all are mixed no matter if you are at skin tone 1 or skin tone 35 but in this country BLACK IS BLACK…..and if you are going to call yourself african dude you should read BEFORE THE MAYFLOWER by LERONE BENNET it might give you more understanding and then again….

I’m tired of the fear mongering. Some of us wonder if Obama isn’t black enough or afraid that he might be killed once he became president. We’re living in the past we need to learn how to grow and prosper in a positive way. We should feel proud that this man was grassrooted from Chicago who rather help ALL people who are suffering rather than taking a top attorney job at a top-notched law firm .
He’s not looking at one race or gender, he talking about the USA as a hold. Clinton will divide us all if we are not open to change. Change is a positive thing because it give us the opportunity to open our minds to the point that you can believe in yourself to point that you can begin to think out side of that box so that you can grow and learn from one another.
I have watched this election very carefully. If Hillary becomes our president we will never get out of Iraq….that’s a fact. She have filp/flop over that issue every sinces she has been in this election..
Bill Clinton basically said that Obama ideal of changes are “Fairytails” and that this country will be rolling the dice if we select him as President. He pissed off various African American politicans by calling Obama a Kid. This is a grown man and very hard working Senator. who earn his position.
At Hillary’s last event in NH she stated that Lyndon B. Johnson was really the movement of the civil right not Martin Luther King. If the Clintons would’ve lost NH she and Bill was going get even dirter to divide the Democrats. They just want to win and they don’t care how they do this.
Do we want the same old thing. Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton, again? The economy is about to go into recession and almost every lobbyist is in the pockets of the Clintons. How can she bring true change?
Our American soliders are dying in Irag for what? Based on a lie and she wants to blame Bush. At least Kerry and Edwards apologize, if she would have done the same thing than I think that this would be a total different election but now they trying to make people think that Obama was flip flopping about supporting the war. They are desperate.
Alot of people used alot of common sense like Obama who knew we had no business going to Irag because we took our eye off the ball. Bin Laden is still sitting up in the mountiain in Afganstian while they filled their pockets with Iraq’s oi. as WE still pay for high price gas.
Nothing is not going to change. We need true change. We live on faith in hope all of our lives because we’ve been taught this all our lives. We have to face our fears and put alot of faith and hope in God because only he has control over our lives and we can’t look into a crystal ball to determine Obama’s future. We need to start loving each other and uplifting each other no matter what race or gender we are because we ALL Americans. The world is watching.seem them a message that we are really ready for true change.
