ROUND UP: NATE DOGG PARALYZED / MLK III EXPECTING A CHILD / GOLFWEEK EDITOR FIRED

Saturday, January 19, 2008

splashnews_afla260505a_03.jpg

Nate Dogg, the once go-to guy for hooks, is reportedly paralyzed on the left side of his body after suffering from a stroke during the holidays.

BallerStatus reports that the only information regarding the rapper’s condition is that he spent nearly eight days confined to a hospital bed at the Pomona Valley Hospital from December 19th until December 26th and adds MTV just got word that he is still suffering from the mild stroke, from his manager on Thursday. Despite being paralyzed, Nate Dogg (real name: Nathaniel Hale) is expected to make a full recovery.

He is currently residing in an occupational rehab facility.

“Time will tell everything, obviously. The doctor can only guess what the outcome will be,” the singer’s rep, Rod McGrew, told MTV. “But based on situations with similar people his age, and based on his health, the prognosis is good right now.”

Martin Luther King III, the eldest son of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King is said to be expecting his first child with a secret wife according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Sources close to King say that the long time bachelor who turned 50 years on October 23rd always wanted kids, but the opportunity never happened. No official word from the King Family or his spokesperson. [ READ MORE @ AJC.COM ]

GOLFWEEK FIRES EDITOR OVER NOOSE COVER

golfweek.gif

The parent company of Golfweek magazine on Friday fired the editor who approved this week’s cover image of a noose for an article about the Golf Channel host Kelly Tilghman’s use of the word “lynch” to describe how young players could challenge Tiger Woods.

According to Golfweek’s website:

“We apologize for creating this graphic cover that received extreme negative reaction from consumers, subscribers and advertisers across the country,” said William P. Kupper Jr., president of Turnstile Publishing Co., the parent company of Golfweek. “We were trying to convey the controversial issue with a strong and provocative graphic image. It is now obvious that the overall reaction to our cover deeply offended many people. For that, we are deeply apologetic.”

Dave Seanor, the fired editor, who on Thursday defended the cover choice as one that was not intended to be “racially provocative,” was subdued Friday. “Sitting in the editor’s chair in this day and age is sort of like walking a tightrope,” he said in a telephone interview. “I lost my balance and slipped off.”

Wow. Not about Nate Dogg, not about MLK III, but about the Golf Week cover. How can any SANE person, in this day and age, think that a noose is appropriate for ANYTHING??? I mean, I’m sure Golf Week wanted to capitalize on the story last week with regard to Tiger, but DAYUM, you couldn’t think of anything else???

He deserved to be fired, and the graphic artist responsible for it should be blackballed…

WOW!

Blacks are having the best week ever. Somebody higher up is seeing the black man as an equal. Oddly enough, i don’t agree with the firing of homeboy. I think he was trying to sell some magazines and generate some publicity. He did, now he catches a brick. The chick that said the lynch comment is still with a job. Now that is jacked up. She should fork over half of her salary to the fired editor.

In regards to Nate Dogg, this is exactly what I said in regards to Pimp C (although I never heard the final official cause of death). So many people were shocked when it was initially reported that he died of natural causes. What is so shocking?!? Here you have another supposedly healthy black male paralyzed on one side. To be honest these individiuals are not healthy. They have problems that are either not diagnosed or diagnosed and they refrain from seeking medical treatment. You do not have a stroke for no reason. A stroke is either caused from hypertension, which left uncontrolled will cause a hemorrhagic stroke also known as an aneurysm secondary to weakening of the cerebral vessels that have weakened because they are constantly pumping under a high pressure system. The other type of stroke is an ischemic stroke secondary to a clot blocking the bloodflow to the brain, thereby leaving the brain “ischemic”. This is caused by high cholesterol or an irregular heart beat called atrial fibrillation, which allows the heart to essentially quiver, and once the heart decides to pump forcefully, the blood that has been sitting stagnant/still and has had time to clot, is now showered with clots throughout the bloodstrem and “clots up” the vessels that flow to the brain.
Therefore Nate Dogg either had a hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke. Either way if hemorrhagic this could have been prevented by taking blood presuure medications as ordered. If ischemic this could have alo been prevented by taking blood presuure medications, but also, an aspirin today, and/or blood thinners like coumadin or plavix. The problem is first of all being black alone is a risk factor for heart attacks, stroke, diabetes etc. Then diabetes alone is a risk factor for heart attacks and stroke. Second of all as the news often show we are often under treated by primary care physicians in contrast to other racial groups. Also we have a huge problem with obesity, secondary to our overeating. Im mean in healthcare the majority of the population on dialysis, amputations, blindness secondary to daibetes, strokes, heart attacks is black people. Young men and women in their middle 20’s are hospitalized with full strokes, sometimes not with a prognosis of a full recovery, instead you are trying to find nursing home placement for them because of the severity of the injury from the stroke. As black individuals, everyone should randomly have their blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol checked at least once a year as a minimum. I mean these are celebrities who you actually here about. There are millions a year as early as in their 20’s - 50’s who are dying or beilng disbaled because of preventable illnesses. I mean think about it and encourage your friends, and families to become empowered and ambassadors of their own health care. Also let me just throw in their that men, especially do not like taking blood pressure medications, because it can cause erectile dysfunction, but their are several classes of blood pressure medications, which will not have this side effect. And once you are paralyzed on one side and drooling, or even worst dead…how are you going to have sex anyway!

GET WELL SOON NATE DOG

CONGRATS TO MLK

AND AS FOR THE NOOSE, I STILL DONT BELIEVE THAT “GOLFWEEK” HAD NO IDEA THAT PUTTING A PICTURE OF A NOOSE ON THEIR MAGAZINE COVER WASNT OK

ITS LIKE ONCE THEY REALIZED HOW SENSITIVE BLACK PEOPLE WERE TO NOOSES, THEY SAID, LETS PUT A NOOSE ON THE COVER

BULLSHIT THAT THEY DIDNT KNOW IT WAS WRONG

WHY OH WHY WOULD YOU CARRY IT OUT BY ACTUALLY GIVING A COVER TO SOMETHING AS NEGATIVE AS A NOOSE?

THIS WASNT AN ACCIDENT AND THEY KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THEY WERE DOING

THEY WERE STANDING BY THEIR GIRL- THE WHITE GIRL WHO MADE THE INITIAL COMMENT ABOUT TIGER

THE GOLF WORLD STAY SHITTIN ON BLACK PEOPLE BUT YET ONE OF THE BEST TO GOLF IS A BLACK MAN WHO WOULD NEVER ADMIT TO BEING A BLACKMAN DESPITE HAVING A BLACK FATHER

EXACTLY!!! to 2 for $5.00’s final comment of: THE GOLF WORLD STAY SHITTIN ON BLACK PEOPLE BUT YET ONE OF THE BEST TO GOLF IS A BLACK MAN WHO WOULD NEVER ADMIT TO BEING A BLACKMAN DESPITE HAVING A BLACK FATHER. Early in his career Tiger said he is polynasian-little-ittie-bit-so-little-it-doesn’t-even-count-black-merican. So he’s probably not even the smallest bit offended about this whole dilmma. Like he said, he and the sportscaster were friends, so he accepted he apology. But this noose is offensive to the rest of us. But you have to realize that golfing has a stigma of being a white only country club sport. If not shown by Concrete Loop, none of us would have probably seen this magazine cover, because it is probably only viewed by those who to subscribe to Golfweek and on the tables of country clubs throughout the US. Goodie the editor was fired and now subdued. Maybe he can find a new job as a caddie now. Dumb ass!

That editor should have been fired, obviously one of the requirements for the position is to use common, rationale sense and he must have understood that a noose relating to that particular story was racist and unacceptable.

lol @ #27 I once heard he was gay. Don’t understand why she’s described as a ’secret wife’ either.

Someone just wanted that editor fired. The chick wasn’t fired. No black person was going to find out about the cover or necessarily react to it…..till they pointed it out under the guise of ‘hundreds of complaints’….please.

Plus i think Tiger is MOST affected by ths than anyone else (as was intended) because he probably desparately wants this whole ‘misunderstanding’ to go away.

I hope Nate Dogg recovers from this. To get a stroke at any age is bad but being still young, thats just terrible. Hope he gets better and works to become healthy. I agree with #16 post.

Lisa

I’m in the minority because this golf cover is a true dialogue piece, something shocking to get people’s attention. There are plenty of covers of magazines that are approved, because you need the cover to stand out whether it’s the hottest celebrity or something as disturbing as a noose. Remember when Charles Barkley wore chains around his neck? There was a little controversy, but many excused it because they felt Charles was a sell out anyway.

I am not excusing this editor, but since when have we become so sensitive? When Whoopi Goldberg said something about George Bush she lost her Slim Fast endorsement, when that Imus dude make his comment he was fired, so now we can’t have free speech in this country? As blacks we say far worse things to each other on a daily basis, on radio, in songs and the only consequences are great sales.

My point is there is inconsistency.

As far as Nate Dogg I hope he gets better, this should be a wakeup call for our folks to look out for our health. Mac n Cheese, deep fried pork chops smoothered in gravy (mumph that sounds good, lol), fried chicken with greens topped with hot sauce, downed with some strawberry Kool-Aid ain’t gon get it, no matter how good it is.

First, my prayers to Mr. Nate Dogg ( for a speedy recovery) & Mr. King III ( for the new life he help create).

2008 minus 1960 equals 48.

48 years sine the Civil Rights Movement. I know it may seem like a million years ago from when OUR grandparents and great grand parents were protesting for Equal rights…but its only been roughly 48yrs. We as a people never got the chance to heal as ONE. Lets take this editiors “Reminder” and start the healing process.

OMG! I never knew that Nate suffered a stroke :( I’m very sad that he is paralyzed on his left side that is so sad. Wow I’m praying for him

I understood why the editor got fired because of cultural insensitivity. A noose is a nosse but in America the noose has a negative connotation due to it being related to Blacks here in this country. We don’t know the man’s logic behind using the word “noose” and displaying a graphic of a noose that would be widely published however due to it being a negative connotation I would’ve been careful not to use something that could be offensive so on that man’s part he was being irresponsible.

My dad went to Morehouse when Marty was there and he said that Martin lll was always quite and to himself but kind of slow in class. None of the King children have children’s, so it’s nice there will be an offspring to carry on the family name. I don’t know what a secret wife is exactly. Maybe he didn’t want anyone to know what his wife looks like.

obama wins most delegates in nevada. from dailykos-

by kos
Sat Jan 19, 2008 at 04:07:32 PM PST
So check it out, Obama literally won more delegates in Nevada than Clinton:

A source with knowledge of the Nevada Democratic Party’s projections told The Nation that under the arcane weighting system, Obama would win 13 national convention delegates and Clinton would win 12 delegates. The state party has not released an official count yet.

Barack Obama released an official statement celebrating a delegate victory. “We came from over twenty-five points behind to win more national convention delegates than Hillary Clinton because we performed well all across the state, including rural areas where Democrats have traditionally struggled,” he said.

And the Obama campaign is milking it, throwing the Hillary campaign’s own words against it:

Senator Obama was awarded 13 delegates to Senator Clinton’s 12. As Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson said, “This is a race for delegates…It is not a battle for individual states. As David knows, we are well past the time when any state will have a disproportionate influence on the nominating process.”

Ha ha ha. As if this thing couldn’t get any more absurd.

Update: Since I was obviously not clear enough and many didn’t get it, the headline was ironic, the last sentence was supposed to give it away.

Yeah, Hillary won the state. But under her earlier rules, all that mattered was the delegate count. So everyone wins. Or no one wins. Or whatever. Like I said, absurd.

In practical and political terms, Hillary wins. She gets the little checkmark next to her name in the results. Losing the delegate count is inside-baseball. But the delegate thing — assuming it holds up and confirmed — is worth a psychological boost to Obama and his supporters.

Update II: The AP has updated its story and is confirming the delegate thing:

“I guess this is how the West was won,” Clinton told cheering supporters in Las Vegas. She captured the popular vote, but Obama edged her out for national convention delegates at stake, taking 13 to her 12.

Update III: The percentages reported for this race, by the way, aren’t popular vote figures. Truly bizarre. They’re based on the number of state delegates awarded. So while no one thinks Obama will win the popular vote, the percentages should be a lot tighter when the actual popular vote numbers are released.

The noose is obviously a very controversial symbol— understandably so and the Editor did not use common sense and was extremely insensitive by approving this cover.
But I do think there needs to be open dialogue about what this represents to us as black people. If this was the editor’s intent he should have found a better way to start this dialogue without being so offensive.
Tiger Woods- SMDH. He’s a mess.

The editor should not have been fired, unless the meaning behind the picture was racist. I wonder if the editor was trying to be thought-provoking. But, in all fairness, we jump and down over something as obvious as this, but we will sit back and defend rappers and other black entertainers for making the African American race look like bottom trash with no morals or drive to pursue anything except for a mic or a ball.

It’s time for blacks to look at the deeper issues instead of the most obvious. If we are not careful, our race will be exterminated in 40-50 years, and it will be because we didn’t wake up and take notice.

@ Clarkthink Thank for the info ( I know when the NAACP, Rainbow Coalition, and other African American organizations started; I actually attended an Historical Black College to get such info). What I was trying to state is it has only been 48yrs from the 1960s when alot of protest took place and yet we think we have moved beyond the Civil Rights time b\c we get to get paid for our work now.

The editior & Kramer let us know that it wasn’t that long ago when

Bowhe,

That’s exactly why this white editor did not see a problem with a noose on the front cover. If black people wont respect themselves, how can we expect them to ? Think about it. We are the only race to demean and disrepect women to the highest capacity. Don’t even get me started on the black family. Black men need to take their place in the home and quit making all lthese babies out of wedlock. It’s more popular to be a “pimp” and disrepsect women than it is to take care of your kids and family. We have to do better otherwise, it will only get worse.

I will be praying for Nate. I truly hope he gets well…and I have a feeling that he will get well. This is incredibly difficult but he’ll get through this stronger than ever.

Oh my goodness, what the hell? I guess 2008 is going to be another “growing pains” year when it comes to racism. I think we’re getting closer to resolving so many race issues, despite all the publicized racism that’s been going on this past year. People who naively believed that racism didn’t exist are realizing that it is alive and well AND they’re also realizing that people of color aren’t afraid to speak out about it - whether it’s blatant racism (like nooses, Genarlow Wilson) or subtle racism (in tv, movies, etc) and we’re going to see some real change really soon. It’s not gonna be easy of course, but it a necessary step towards progress as far as racism goes.
